Dave Canales Had Best Plan/Sales Pitch For Kyle Trask

March 2nd, 2023

Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

The change at offensive coordinator and at quarterback will be the two most critical moves of the Bucs’ offseason.

General manager Jason Licht had his body and spirit in the OC interviews and was involved in the process with head coach Todd Bowles.

Speaking on a Pro Football Focus show at the NFL Scouting Combine, Licht talked about what tipped the scales for Canales. Licht was asked what set Canales apart during the interview process?

“One thing that Dave was very adamant about was a quarterback-friendly offense,” Licht began. “Having a quarterback that just doesn’t make mistakes. ‘He can work around. He’s got an arm. He can get the ball from Point A to Point B. He’s smart. He works hard. What else do you want here? Let’s go. We can make this work.’ So it was very exciting to hear him talk about what his plan was and how he liked [Trask] coming out of the draft [in 2020].”

Canales is a steaming-with-excitement kind of guy. He brings a lot of juice and Joe could see/hear Canales laying out Xs and Os with a underlying message of “Why not Kyle? Why the heck not?”

And in early March, Joe feels the same way. Why not Trask? Unless the Bucs find somebody significantly better, the young man should/could be ready to perform.

I’m guessing Canales didn’t watch much tape on Trask before his interview….or he’s just tooting a line of BULL.

Cmon Man!………………you ain’t fooling none of us Bucs fans who haven’t seen Trask do anything decent since he’s been drafted.

Now all of a sudden he’s our starter?????? MEH…….

  2. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Anthem Trask is the guy. We don’t need to have this argument again. Stop the Gatorhating and accept this is your future.

  3. Old black man Says:

Draft a QB and let them fight.

  4. captivajim Says:

we’ll have a lot of Rah-Rah from him (ala Pete Carroll ).. not sure whether there’s much more . time will tell ??

  5. BucBoy Says:

    Joe, you OK? lol

  6. Marine Buc Says:

If any of you guys (or girls) want to feel a little better about the prospect of Kyle Trask being our starting QB in 2023 – go back and watch his game film from the 2020 Florida vs. Georgia game…

Georgia was ranked #5 in the country at the time.

    Kyle’s stats
    30 completions
    43 attempts
    4 TDs
    1 INT

    Florida – 44
    Georgia -28

Nice touch on deep passes. Very accurate on the shorter to medium passes. Ran the offense perfectly…

The only INT bounced off WR Toney’s hands.

    The kid can play.

  7. BucBoy Says:

    Marine Buc,

I would add one more thing about that game. Trask’s 4 TD passes were to 4 different receivers. The haters will cry that he was throwing to Pitts, but Pitts caught only 1 TD early in the game before getting injured and missing the rest of the game (and several more games). Trask then threw 3 more TD pases to 3 other receivers. He sees the field well and spreads the ball around.

  8. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Marine Buc

Bruh…….that was a MILLION LIGHTYEARS from today.

……..you cannot compare college to the NFL

  9. BucBoy Says:

^ And none of the 4 TD passes were to Toney.

Why then were you so giddy when Jameis Winston was drafted?

  11. acey Says:

I am once again advocating for the Bucs to bring in Heinicke.

  12. ATLBuc Says:

Canales and Kyle will be better than Byron and Brady

  13. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Your descriptions of Canales remind me of your descriptions of PJ Fleck. Some commonalities, no? If so, that would be very good.

  14. Jeff Says:

Great talk. Trask will never take the Bucs to a SB. Never gonna happen. Whatā€™s Plan B?

  15. Joe Says:

Your descriptions of Canales remind me of your descriptions of PJ Fleck.

Joe’s met him and talked to him three times now. He really does remind Joe of Fleck.

  16. Marine Buc Says:

    @ TheAnthum

At this time there is not sufficient NFL game film of Trask playing QB to judge him…

I am not a Gator fan. Unfortunately I am a USF fan… Yikes.

I consider myself a pretty unbiased judge of Trask.

I am concerned about his arm strength on making certain throws – like deep outs…

However – he has very nice touch on his deep throws down the sideline and his short and medium passes are accurate and he seems to make very good decisions while making minimal errors.

I am going to be cheering for Kyle Trask because he is probably going to be our starting QB in 2023.

I don’t know how it will work out but I am impressed with what I see on his colledge game film.

  17. Marine Buc Says:

    @ BucBoy

That hit Kyle Pitts took was probably one of the nastiest hits of that NCAA season…

But you are correct – Pitts left the game after that and Trask was still able to throw several more TDs and a ton of yards without him on the field.

  18. Marine Buc Says:

    *college…not colledge… lol

    That dam worthless USF degree…

    LOL!!!

  19. Jeffā€™s grandpa Says:

Trask is only here to replace a legend cuz no one wants too

  20. Beej Says:

The only evidence to recommend Trask as a good NFL quarterback is film of his college play. All high draft quarterbacks have great film from college, and most of them fail in the NFL

  21. matthew veal Says:

I guess this particular joe likes Trask more than the other joes!

  22. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Glad to have the Joes coming around on Trying With Trask in 2023

  23. Goatfarmer Says:

In private, he said, ā€œWell since heā€™s your only player under contract at the position, we will need an idiot proof system to accommodate him. But, when we bring in the competition, we can adjust as we need based on improved capability and talent over #2.ā€

  24. Marques Says:

Iā€™ve been saying it from day 1. He went Florida for his undergrad and got his Masters with Brady and Company. Will there be growing pains? Absolutely. Is it time? Yes. Failure will be his greatest teacher. He will learn, he will grow, he is our qb today and moving forward. Build him up. There was a lot in terms of agility and running that Brady couldnā€™t do yet he is the greatest qb of all time. That is the lesson we should all pay attention to.

  25. Aceofaerospace Says:

All we are saying, is give Trask a chance.

  26. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Beej

“All high draft quarterbacks have great film from college, and most of them fail in the NFL”

I agree. But I give extra credit to a QB who can put up Kyle’s numbers in the SEC…

    Major props.

But you are correct – college success does not always equal NFL success.

  27. HC Grover Says:

Trask could win NFC South, Of course so could almost any QB.

  28. Reality BucFan Says:

    Everyone is doubting Trask…
Brock Purdy was awful in the preseason but then again that was with 4th and 5th strangers sort of like Trask

  29. Reality BucFan Says:

Let’s all meet back here week 8 of the regular season go Bucs

  30. CrackWise Says:

Trask should have won the Heisman (he was the runner up?), if he had, and sat two years behind Brady. People would still be calling him a BUST before he ever started a game.

So, I just laugh at all of the negative pub. If Kyle does what he has always done, when given his shot, he will be GREAT!!!

  31. Goatfarmer Says:

There is a long list of SEC QBs who put up great numbers in the SEC, who turned out like #2 will turn out.

Tebow won a Heisman and was on two national championship teams. I’d prefer him over #2 any day, and we all know how his career finished. Others —

That Danny Wuerffel sure lit up the NFL. Oh wait.
Rex Grossman was probably the most accomplished Gator QB and he was a Bear, and played like the Bears play.

That David Greene sure rocked the NFL. Wait — who?
Johnny Manziel was an all pr– oops.
    But Aaron Murray, now he………
Chris Leak really killed it. In the AFL. not really.
    AJ McCarron! Haha
    Tim Couch, now he…………..
Pat Sullivan was a throwback who…………..
    Spurrier! oh
Remember Tommy Hodson? Neither does anyone else.
Eric Zeier was almost as good as that fat bot from Tulane.
    Jared Lorenzen? LOL
Shane Matthews! Another Gator bust in a long long list of futility.
That Heath Shuler was really something in the pros. Not pro football though.

The number of busts outweighs the number of successes, by quite a bit.

Specifically, the Gators have never had a true NFL star at QB.

    Never.

    NEVER.

But, you know, college performance as NFL predictor.

    Gator QB stud. YAY!!!

#2 is going to have a chance. That’s not due to anything he’s done on the field with the Bucs and everything to do with the circumstance. Sad, really.

  32. Buc king Says:

Well we invested a 2nd rd pick in him…
I liked him in college I felt he was top 3 to 5 qb in college when he was playing.
Is he pro ready idk I never have had faith in anything buc developing players or qbs.
Winston never got any better might even say he digressed in certain ways.
Now Trask holding clip board for Brady did it help him having Tommy the goat in qb room or watching him game plan for sundays help idk?
I don’t see how it can hurt.
I think to expect him to be a world beater would be to ask a lot.
He could become a top 15qb right now of his commit is there and we can develop a efficient run game.
I honestly pick apart what makes him good to great make that the staple of the pass game and have Brady come back to visit training camp to work on the other stuff that will set him up for success.
I think just cutting complete ties with Tom is a bad idea have him work with the kid in the off season and during camp.

  35. mark2001 Says:

I hope Track is as advertised, especially if Rodgers goes to the Panthers. Rumors in GB, the packers have been contacted.

  36. IrishTony Says:

I want to see how the gator ā€œgolden boyā€ holds up against tough, over achieving nfl ready ā€œscrappersā€ like Heinecke or Rush.

  37. IrishTony Says:

Rogers ainā€™t going to the Panthers guaranteed.

  38. IrishTony Says:

Rogers ainā€™t going to the Carolina Kitties guaranteed.

  39. IrishTony Says:

You folks amaze me with your blind support of an unproven (NFL) entity. If Traskā€™s the guy letā€™s see him beat out someone like Rush, Heinecke, Thompson(heā€™s probably under contract) or even Mayfield (not a fan of).

  40. IrishTony Says:

As far as Jaymiss is concerned I was done with him after the first damn year. He was a major disappointment sort of like what Iā€™m expecting from Richardson.

  41. IrishTony Says:

@ Goatfarmer thanks for the reminder of Gator NFL failures. Look as a Florida boy donā€™t hate the gators but facts are facts and yes I would take Grossman or Tebow over Trask. Just because he went toe to toe with Mac Jones in college with superior playmakers doesnā€™t make Trask Jonesā€™s equivalent.

  42. steele Says:

“Canales is a steaming-with-excitement kind of guy.” Hope he doesn’t turn out to be a steaming something else. In the meantime, the frenetic, nearly hysterical Pete Carroll motivational speaker rah rah is your daily diet. Get used to legends of the Seahawks and USC Trojans, boys and girls.

Trask needs to be pushed out there and battle tested ASAP. Just do it and get it out of the way, so decisions can be made. They will need to bring in a starter in any case.

  43. BucsNoles Says:

    Acey got it right
    HighNiki brings toughness
    Good arm strength and mobility
And he wont break the bank

  44. IrishTony Says:

Yeah Canalesā€™ statement about our qb just needs to be a ā€œpoint guardā€ or ball distributor doesnā€™t sound like a ringing endorsement of Trask. Thatā€™s not how Russ Played in Seattle or even Gene Smith. Did Smith get the ball in the hands of playmakers? Absolutely but he also made stuff happen outside of the pocket. Are we expecting that from Trask?

I’m sorry, but that is a horrible justification. When exactly was he going to show something? When he was working with 3rd stringers in preseason? When he was not promoted to 2nd string because he never got to work with the 1st stringers like Gabbert did?

I have no idea if Trask will be good, but neither does anyone else right now. He may end up a bust…or with the right coaching he might be a HoFer in the making.

Who knows? In a couple years, he could be phenomenal.

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

IrishTony, a mobile QB is not an absolute must. So long as he has great instincts in the pocket and has good protection, a pock passer is just as good…which is why we got a second ring.

  47. Shak Says:

Florida nor the SEC are anomalies when it comes to great college QBs busting in the NFL. Finding a great QB is a crap shoot. Thatā€™s why all these mediocre QBs keep getting passed around and lasting longer than they should. Most teams will take a mediocre QB over what they can get from the roll the dice college guys. So many QBs that should have been out of the league 5-10 years ago still have jobs, even if it’s 1 season QB #1 or the backup job. There are maybe 5 QBs in the league who can win with most teams in the league, probably another 5 who could win with the top half of the league, everyone else needs the perfect situation.

I don’t know if Trask will pan out, I just want us to give him a fair shot, I don’t want us to waste money to slip into the playoffs when I believe we could sneak in with someone like Trask (essentially no real money)

  48. David Says:

Trask will get it done as he did it in HS and college. Trask & Mike E. =Trask & Kyle Pitts.

  49. 76 bucsfan46 Says:

Would like to see Bucs draft Hendon Hooker to compete with Trask

  50. Mike Says:

A lot of times, you just need someone to believe in you and give you a chance to grow. It sounds like Trask will have that with his new OC, and that is a great thing!
