Wonder Who Dave Canales Is Interviewing?

February 21st, 2023

Bucs OC Dave Canales.

So it seems new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales is busy finding guys to round out his staff. And it doesn’t appear Bucs coach Todd Bowles is being a helicopter parent.

Yesterday WFLA-TV Channel 8 sports reporter Karen Loftus caught up with Bucs Pro Bowl right tackle Tristan Wirfs at an event to celebrate the Bucs hosting a girls flag football tournament at One Buc Palace.

There, Wirfs said he finally got to meet his new coordinator. Wirfs was working out at One Buc Palace and popped in to Bowles’ office for a visit. Asking about Canales, Bowles told Wirfs that Canales was in his office in a zoom interview so go ahead and walk in, which Wirfs did.

We do know Canales is bringing along from Seattle assistant Seahawks’ receivers coach Brad Idzik. This hasn’t been officially announced so it’s unclear what Idzik’s direct responsibilities are.

Joe just found it interesting that Canales apparently is wasting no time getting his feet on the ground in Tampa and getting to work. Also interesting is that Bowles apparently wasn’t involved in the interview.

Hopefully Canales called Wirfs “My Left Tackle”.

  2. Joe Swanson Says:

I hope its not Jeremy Bates.

If so, sure hope that was a mistake.

  4. Dooley Says:

This sounding like the creative freedom I was hoping to hear about. How much and to what extent remains to be seen, but yea let Canales plug the holes on the offensive staff himself before unleashing him on us at an introductory press conference. Good to hear Wirfs introducing himself to Canales, but I wanna hear of Mr.Trask coming to the building to link up with Canales before the combine to get a head start over whomever else we bring in to compete for the starting QB position.

  5. Joe Swanson Says:

Yeah let Canales pick his on staff so that means Bowles can say I didn’t pick those coaches Jason. And Licht can say ok Todd I will fire him and you can pick your own staff for 2024.

  6. Kgh4life Says:

    @ Joe Swanson
    You really have some imagination.

Most OC’s working for a defensive head coach are going to have a whole lot of say on the staff. It’s certainly better than having Bowles picking them.

Bowles and Licht sign off on it anyway, so they’ll be responsible regardless.

  8. Stebobucsfan Says:

Thank you Sasquatch. Bowles is still got to sign off on staff hirers. More Bowles bashing

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So, all we’ve been hearing is that Bowles didn’t have an opportunity to pick his assistants….and now Canales is hired as OC and Bowles didn’t participate in the interview.
Apparently, someone else is calling the shots…..and that someone else probably thought that Bowles would be a negative factor in the interview….

  10. HC Grover Says:

Is he interviewing Lovie? He is available.

Bowles would likely be in on an interview before a hire is made. And he hired Canales to help pick a staff because he was comfortable with what Canales would be looking for. That’s why he hired him. It’s still Bowles’ staff.

This is all music to Fanman’s ears! Roll up your sleeves Coach! Lets get to work!

  13. Goatfarmer Says:

This is no surprise, at least Canaries isn’t a blow-off. At least he’s doing what anyone in his situation would do, so that’s positive. He’s willing to the the minimum. Hire guys. Yes.

  14. EEK Says:

call better plays, have a run game, be more prepared

2022 was a sad waste of a season

  15. rrsrq Says:

I hear it is Marcus Arroyo. naw, just kidding

  16. Dooley Says:

Apparently it could’ve been Skip Peete no clue if he’s related to Rodney & Holly

  17. Dooley Says:

Okay so Skip Peete our new RB coach is Rodney Peetes’ brother lol also his backfields’ have produced enough to be in the top 10 the last 4 years. Canales came to work.

  18. ABucAway Says:

Tristan “good attitude and good effort” Wirfs is my favorite current Buccaneer. I think he’d bring that same attitude if they tried to flip him over to LT. And if he made the transition at a pro bowl level of play, our young Buc could demand the biggest dollars ever offered to an Olineman. I’d love to see that happen.

Dave is hopefully trying to fill the QB coach position. I’d like to think that we will be able tonglean some insight into the QB decisions based on this hire. Foot tap foot tap foot tap..

  19. ABucAway Says:

    to glean*

  20. Pewter Power Says:

No not interesting at all, you have a job go to work it’s that simple. He needs to fill out his staff so there is no time to waste. He’s a first time coordinator, they draft, voluntary workouts. Time is shorter than we realize

  21. firethecannons Says:

Wirfs–I just busted in to his office, I don’t wait till interview is over, I don’t wait to get asked–I just do whatever the fck I want lol!–he plays like that too! Love it!!!!! We need more of this guy!
