Bold Prediction For Next Bucs Quarterback By CBS

February 21st, 2023

Winner.

What is interesting about this slightly depressing offseason is that anyone could argue the Bucs should do (pick an option) and there is a reasonable case to be made.

Should the Bucs spin their wheels with a retread quarterback and continue to be in Quarterback Purgatory? Should the Bucs activate #CollapseForCaleb?

Or should the Bucs find value in free agency and the draft and make a run in a rotten division?

Joe believes a sound case could be made for all three.

Over at CBS, Jordan Dajani believes, short of a firesale, the Bucs have too much talent to tank. So he thinks the Bucs should go out and secure a winning quarterback and make another run for it.

Who is that winning quarterback? Jimmy GQ!

With the San Francisco 49ers’ decision to tab Trey Lance to start the 2022 season followed by the emergence of new starting quarterback Brock Purdy, Jimmy G will be on the move this offseason. My wild prediction is that he proves time is a flat circle by replacing his former teammate, Tom Brady, under center in Tampa.

Is Garoppolo someone who can command an elite air attack? Probably not, but the Buccaneers aren’t exactly in a great position to tank. Look at this roster on paper: They have talent on both sides of the ball. I say go sign a quarterback with starting experience and see what you can do.

If Joe didn’t know any better, Joe would swear this is the handiwork of a ghostwriter for Bucs coach Todd Bowles. But yeah, Jimmy GQ, albeit brittle, is a winner.

Look, if Joe told you the Bucs in the next three years would play in a Super Bowl and later a conference championship game, you’d start doing shots.

That’s what Jimmy GQ did for the 49ers from 2019-2021.

    Geno votes for Geno

  2. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Jimmy is good enough but he’s be out for the season by week 9 every year. Pass.

  3. Todd Says:

If he’s the face on the Buc’s stadium facing West, there’s going to be a LOT of Tampa ladies entering Mons Venus looking to Jimmy for a little pre-game fantasy football!

  4. gp Says:

I’ll root for whomever wears a Bucs jersey (short of being an absolute douche).
That being said, this move will probably lead to Trask starting by midseason.
And I’ll root for him to win then too.

  5. SC Bucs Fan Says:

    We cannot afford him

  6. Joe in Michigan Says:

Two of the posts hit the nail(s) on the head, expensive and injury prone.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I just can’t see spending a bunch of bucks on a QB who is injury prone…..imagine doing that and having him go down in week 3….

I’ll say this again…..I have zero faith in Todd Bowles and don’t want to waste a nickel on a QB for him.

I would be in favor of a cheap vet to compete with Trask…..Mayfield or even Gabbert…..Trask should not be gifted the starters job.

  8. Hodad Says:

Jimmy I can never finish the season? No thanks. My guess is the Bucs are counting on Canales to develop Trask, and, or, resurrect Blaine Gabbert’s career. If Canales got the former bust Geno Smith to have a career year, why couldn’t he do the same for Blaine? That’s the thinking going on in Tampa. Blaine is bigger, stronger, and faster than J.G.. He already is a part of the Bucs, has chemistry with Evans, and Godwin already. He’s the most logical, and best fit to be our vet QB. The firing of Leftwich is a sign the Bucs think the biggest problem on offense was him, not the players. Bucs will roll with Gabby, and Trask, draft a QB in the later rounds for the P.S.. Talk of any other option is just talk.

  9. BucBoy Says:

“the Bucs have too much talent to tank”

Dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. 8-9 with Tom Brady and we have “too much talent”? 🤣

  10. zzbucs Says:

When there is no news, let´s make rumours, we need to sell….Said a CBS authority….

  11. Beej Says:

Signing someone of his statute precludes hanging onto people like Dean, LD, and Edwards/Ryan

  12. Guzzie Says:

JBurrow Trevor KMurray Herbert are the only legit stud QBs drafted in the top 6 since 2014 that’s it, plus Watson Mahomes Lamar if you want to say 1st round, tanking means Bowles n maybe Licht lose their jobs, and pretty sure they both want to keep their jobs

  13. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

    No

  14. BuxfaninTX Says:

We will end up with Tannehill or Matt Ryan…

  15. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

A high priced retread is not going to lead the Bucs to the promise land.
Go economical in 2023. Balance the Bucs checkbook, save some money, help with the cap pinch and be prepared for 2024 and better things to come.

  16. Dooley Says:

Dude missed 43 games in 6 years with SF, threw the pick that was the daggar in SFs last SB visit and they already drafted a guy to replace him lol NO

  17. Jimbo J Says:

We’ve talked about this a billion times. The bucs don’t have the money in the salary cap. The plan has always been for Trask to take over after Brady left. However, if they do sign a QB it will be JG. Why are we rehashing this over and over? We knew is a year ago. geez.

  18. Marine Buc Says:

    Nope. Not gonna happen.

Let me say this for the hundredth time…

THE BUCS DON’T HAVE ANY CAP DOLLARS TO SPEND ON A QB!

The Bucs will have to restructure every contract they have just to get to plus $45M.

Then they need to sign 20-23 free agents. If they make cuts they will have to sign more free agents. They will also need @ $7-$8M to sign their draft picks.

  19. Caleb Says:

This guy was completely and utterly outplayed by a last pick in the draft rookie. And people think he is good still? Lol. Definition of a system qb. He’s good enough to get the Bucs to 5 or so wins and ruin their chances to get a top qb in draft next year. No thanks.

  20. Bucs56 Says:

Guy never loved football and just collects a check. Give me Gabbert and Trask for less money.

  21. Rand Says:

Again, if Jimmy is brought in there will be no competition at starting QB. Jimmy will be automatically gifted the position and we’ll never get to see what we really have in Trask. Jimmy was a second rounder just like Trask and sat behind Brady but Jimmy got his early chance during inflate gate. Trask for all we all know could be our answer to franchise QB but the couch GM’s seem to think they have him figured out. Hogwash

  22. Bucfan Says:

Bowels could not win with the GOAT. Doubt ANY QB will help him win next season!

  23. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

A definite NO To Gino. Has been nothing more than a backup most of his career. I would consider Mayfield. Has proved in a number of seasons to be quite capable as a starter. I know he’s had a few down seasons but overall I would at least kick the tires on him. But with the cap situation I would go with Trask.

  24. TheBucsAnthem Says:

It doesn’t matter who the QB will be in these “rebuilding” years

  25. NYbucsfan Says:

This is not a super bowl roster. So why bring a player in to win 7 or 8 games? Bowies is not a capable head coach, so let’s not let him hold use back another two years. Start building now for the next coach.

  26. SufferingSince76 Says:

Let Trask work with the first team in all training camps and evaluate him on that. As far as I know, he’s never played with them.

  27. Tye Says:

In the bucs 40+ years they have never had real success with young qbs… Not sustainable anyway… Playoffs and Super Bowls with veteran experienced at qb… Bailing for a Bust should never be

  28. Bobby M. Says:

If we’re looking at a QB for a discount why not see if Matt Ryan becomes available. He’s 36, been exceptionally productive and at this stage of his career would be more than adequate as a game manager. He’s also much more durable than Garrapolo at probably half the price.

  29. AlwaysBucs Says:

    A team’s win/loss record is not a QB STAT

Jimmy G would be a great signing if he came with the 49ers defense and their offensive line. With subpar coaching the Bucs will always be fighting a losing battle

  30. gp Says:

    AlwaysBucs

    ******if he came with ******

And coaches, don’t forget the coaches!

  31. Joe Swanson Says:

Only played about 2 full seasons in his career. And how much does the 49ers offensive scheme make him look better than he actually is. I mean Brock Purdy looked like the second coming of Joe Montana for christ sakes.

  32. HC Grover Says:

With Bowles it will collapse for Caleb no matter who is the QB.

  33. Davenport Says:

    No. Hell No.
Bowles is a career loser & we are in a cap mess.

Roll with Trask, make the cuts/trades & take the beating. Let Todd do what he does best — lose. He’ll get us to a top 5 pick.

  34. Bucanero Says:

It could work but it will take a lot of pieces around, good o-line and a stellar performance by new OC Canales. I’m not against it.

  35. Jeff Says:

Jimmy G tracks perfectly for Light and Bowles. Two clueless rubes.

  36. BucBoy Says:

SufferingSince76 Says: “Let Trask work with the first team in all training camps and evaluate him on that. As far as I know, he’s never played with them.”

He hasn’t. Not a single snap in 2 years of preseason games or in the 2 measly series he got in the Falcons regular season game. And yet some judge him already. And yet those same will say the jury is still out on JTS despite 2 full seasons of lackluster play. Why the difference? Hmmm.

In point of fact, Joe is essentially already writing off Trask with his ubiquitous “CollapseForCaleb” nonsense. Good thing Joe wasn’t calling the shots in Philadelphia when Jalen Hurts was stinking up his rookie camp, rookie season, second rookie camp, and second season, right?

  37. sasquatch Says:

More chum for the wild-ass speculation parade.

No QB costing more than 10 million is likely to be hired.

Prediction is it’s Trask + Lock + draftee.

  38. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

    please no

often injured and lost that Super Bowl you mention

  39. bucsfaninOregon Says:

Jimmy G is too nice a guy to join this mess.

  40. Nicholas Carlson Says:

“the Bucs have too much talent to tank” Amen! Would have killed for a roster like this in 2017…

  41. Nicholas Carlson Says:

One benefit of signing Jimmy G is that you almost certainly also get a long look at Kyle Trask at some point.

  42. Duane Says:

I can appreciate all the cap experts we have on this team pounding the drums to save money, but this team is going to sign a quarterback that makes more than $10 million a year, and even if that is to play backup. You still need to make sure there is a veteran on hand to help in case of injury or Trask struggle. Jimmy G is not durable enough to be a 17 game starter on a team looking to compete. He is not a gamer, he is a less successful Trent Dilfer that landed on a team with a stacked defense and never took advantage of the situation. Back to the drawing board for a better option.

  43. SlyPirate Says:

    CRASH FOR CALEB

For those who say, “That’s a loser’s mentality.” You probably weren’t a Bucs fan prior to TB12. The Bucs lose a lot. Most ever, actually. Embrace it. Reload the trenches and Crash for Caleb … intentionally or unintentionally.

  44. Goatfarmer Says:

Norm Snead is coming back. You heard it here first.

  45. 76 bucsfan46 Says:

I’m pulling for Jacoby Brissett, he will be cheap and effective. Until we draft our QB of the future.

  46. rrsrq Says:

Well if we sign Jimmy G, at least we will know what we have in Trask by mid-season

  47. Joe Says:

I’m pulling for Jacoby Brissett, he will be cheap and effective

    Effective handing the ball off?

  48. Tim R. Says:

It is time to turn on Trask. If you don’t play h next year then cut him so he can show what idiots are in the front office.

  49. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    BucBoy Says:
“Dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. 8-9 with Tom Brady and we have “too much talent”?”

Are you going to pretend that injuries did not play a role?

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    SlyPirate Says
    “CRASH FOR CALEB

For those who say, “That’s a loser’s mentality.” You probably weren’t a Bucs fan prior to TB12. The Bucs lose a lot. Most ever, actually. Embrace it. Reload the trenches and Crash for Caleb … intentionally or unintentionally.”

Well, that’s a total crock. The idea is to leave that mentality behind. Been a fan since the beginning…and there is no way I want them to go back to that. Play to win, or don’t be a fan.

  51. vadertime Says:

Jimmy is a good, game manager, but he is brittle. Give him protection and a couple of receivers and he might get the job done until we find a long-term solution under center – Trask isn’t the answer. We’re not going back to the Superbowl any time soon and we’ll be lucky to make it back to the playoffs under Bowles. We need an offensive-minded coach and give a QB with a rocket-launcher arm and accuracy to boot. Oh, BTW, Justin Fields is not the answer either. OSU has not produced a top 10 pro QB in decades. Get Jimmy for the short-term and let’s draft for the future. Go Bucs.

  52. BucBoy Says:

When, and by whom, was 6’1″ (ahem, 6’0″) Caleb Williams annointed the Second Coming of the 2024 draft? And how is it known he’s not another Johnny Manziel or Jameis Winston? Inquiring minds want to know!

  53. JD Still Says:

Fans to management: I don’t understand how you plan to get better and get out of salary cap hell by going out and hiring other teams overpriced cast offs ?

Management to Fans: Easy , by volume !

Fans to management: I don’t understand how you plan to get better and get out of salary cap hell by going out and hiring other teams overpriced cast offs ?

Management to Fans: Easy , by volume !

(And this is not a duplicate statement ! If you don’t like my statement just say so , but don’t play stupid games!)

  55. captivajim Says:

given choice of Tannehill , Ryan , or Jimmy GQ ; i ‘d take GQ

  56. ABucAway Says:

Just resign the Slinger for cheap. He was a first rnd pick so come with the pedigree. He’s cheap cheap says a little birdy

  57. Craig Says:

He would fail here. He needs a strong run game to work his game into. That ain’t happening next season.

Save the money and bring back Gabbert to compete with Trask. If it doesn’t work, try something else later.

If it looks close keep that QB for a while longer and draft a QB.

  58. Greg Says:

For the love of God no!!! I doubt hes much better than Trask! There are no options in FA that are going to make a impact on this team. Save money, get out of cap hell. Give Trask one year and if he sucks we will have more money to go after a FA or a better draft class. Stop blowing recourses on mediocrity.

  59. firethecannons Says:

No!!!!!!!!! Hell No to Jimmy G–this team does not need this broken down garbage backup We are rolling with Trask and getting in place for 2024!

  60. firethecannons Says:

sign Jameis for 1 million for 1 year and call that position done perhaps get a backup in the later rounds or undrafted!

  61. Oneilbuc Says:

    With what money???

  62. chark Says:

I really feel Baker Mayfield is a better qb than Carr and Jimmy G. I think he is unfairly judged based on his brash personality. He has some meh games but pull up his highlights on youtube of his better games. He has gone toe to toe with Lamar, mahomes, hebert in high scoring games. I dont think Carr and jimmy g have had games like baker has. He really is more aggressive and can make plays, just have to eliminate some bad things. His good games are really good and he has had some really good stat lines. I see him a cut above all the qbs out there. I know many will disagree..lol.

  63. Tom Sumner Says:

    Garoppolo! !! lfgoooooo

  64. ScottyMack Says:

Absolutely agree that if you are looking for a veteran who has had success and will be an absolute bargain, it is Matt Ryan. By the end of his run with the Falcons he had no receivers to throw to and the same has been par for the course for several years in Indy. He might look like an absolute stud with Evans, Godwin and Gage.

  65. steele Says:

Bucs in their current situation should avoid overpaying any of the top QBs, and those top QBs are each problematic. Jimmy GQ is brittle and folds under pressure, often in Three Stooges fashion. He may get you through most of a regular season, but even on a loaded Niners team, he didn’t cut it. Carr is a boneheaded loser.

The commitment to and choice of QB, and for how long, depends on what the agenda is for this team. How long is Bowles Ball going to inflict itself? Is Team Glazer so delusional that they think this is still a playoff team?

No rebuild until and unless Bowles is gone, which obviously isn’t now, because he’s just started bringing in “his guys”, so we’re looking at what, one or two seasons of neither here nor there. Many of the jaded veterans also need to go.

  66. Barlow Says:

I’m not positive that win-now screams anyone of these guys. But if one has the edge it would be Smith. He’s the hot one as most recent. And he is also fairly young. Other than that cashing in our chips and the draft for one would zero out building around one. Tough spot to be in but we still could own nfc south baby yeah!!!!!!!!!!!’

  67. covertwo22 Says:

Trask is the best option. Give him one year to see how he does. Worse case scenario, the team is out of cap hell and can spend money on a QB or draft one next year. Best case, he’s a good QB and we make the playoffs.

  68. Thomas Douglas Says:

I hope you can see it now how screwd you are, how spoiled you we
Re…Tom had you dreaming…now you got toss and turn all night like a little baby,. Now just lay there dead in the water buc fan .bye bye
