Todd Bowles Understands Bucs May Not Be Able To Afford Jamel Dean

February 28th, 2023

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

The Bucs, you may have heard, are in a budget crisis.

Tampa Bay is in salary cap hell, and many think it’s the worst cap situation in the league. The Bucs have very good players expected to hit free agency two weeks. Yikes.

One player Joe fears the Bucs won’t be able to keep is Jamel Dean. The 26-year old cornerback is widely considered to be one of the top free agents available. The Bucs just don’t have the funds to win a bidding war.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles was asked about Dean today when he met with #NFLMedia at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. His answer sounded like he fears Dean may slip away.

“Dean had a very good season,” Bowles said. “I thought Dean had a very good year, especially the first half before he got injured. He’s a guy that’s going to be commanding some attention.”

Too much attention for Joe’s liking.

“This Joe” has not wavered in his belief: As much as “this Joe” worships 33-year-old Lavonte David, Joe would rather keep Dean if forced to choose.

If Dean leaves and the Bucs don’t somehow find an effective pass-rush(er), this defense is going to be Mike Smith-like.

    Dean at all that anyways!!!

Carlton Davis is the only TRUE corner the Bucs should keep.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Besides….the Glazer boys ain’t forking out sheitz for cash anyways this season…..not while Kyle Trask is guiding this rudderless ship!!!!

  3. sasquatch Says:

Lavonte + SMB > Dean (and probably cheaper)

Dean at high dollar is a big risk if you look at the totality of his 4 years in the league.

  4. DoooshLaRue Says:

None of our DBs can stay healthy.
    It’s frustrating.

  5. IrishTony Says:

They should just franchise tag him he’s a Daytona boy so let’s keep him close to home

  6. IrishTony Says:

SMB is a terrible outside corner please release him. So you just want to waive your best corner Jesus!

  7. Defense Rules Says:

DooshLaRue … ‘None of our DBs can stay healthy.’

I agree with you & why that is has got me totally befuddled. One consistent thread I did notice is that our Secondary makes a LOT of solo tackles (more than the other position groups). Given that most of our CBs & even Safeties are shorter & lighter than many of the TEs & WRs they have to tackle, I guess it should be more expected that our guys would take the brunt of the exchange. Even on run plays, I see our Secondary making a LOT of tackles.

Seems to be taking a toll on some more than others. Winfield only got 13 games; Edwards only got 13 games; Davis only got 13 games; McCollum only got 13 games; SMB only got 12 games and Ryan only got 9 games. Dean was the healthiest of all the starters with 15 games to his credit, although Neal & Delaney both got 17 games. Overall that’s a pretty bad track record for our Secondary.

  8. HC Grover Says:

No worries. Super Coach will just create a better one.

  9. LVMYBUCS Says:

Bowles so stupid he can’t see he is being set up to fail and fired.

  10. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

KAY-SA-RA-SA-RA..WHATEVER WILL BE, WILL BE..WE CAN DRAFT SOMEONE JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER..DON’T OVERPAY ANYONE THIS YEAR ( UNLESS THEIR NOT FREE AGENTS )..CUT OR TRADE DONOVAN SMITH FOR A DRAFT CHOICE (SHOULD HAVE DONE SAME THING WITH LENNY, DEAN & ANY FREE AGENT, THEN DRAFT THEIR REPLACEMENTS..(FRANCHISE TAG LAVANTE DAVID IF NESSESARY..) HE’S OUR DEFENSIVE CAPTAIN)TOO VALUABLE TO LOSE THIS YEAR..DRAFT A FUTURE REPLACEMENT THIS YEAR..SIGN BAKER MAYFIELD TO COMPETE WITH TRASK FOR STARTING JOB..

  11. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

PACKAGE ALL THESE FREE AGENTS & SEND ALL BUT LAVANTE DAVID TO THE BEARS FOR THE #1 OVERALL PICK & DRAFT THE ABSOLUTE BEST LEFT TACKLE ON THE BOARD..GOT TO PROTECT OUR QUARTERBACK !

STOP YELLING! Turn off your damn caps lock.

    Also, it’s “Que sera, sera”…

  13. Rod Munch Says:

I’d love to see David retire as a Buc, but let’s face it, the Bucs are going to stink this year and they’re not going to be competitive. For David’s sake, I’d love to see him go sign with a top tier team, have another great season, and solidify his first ballot HOF status. I’m a bit worried if he comes back to the Bucs on a team that goes 3-14, that he’s just going to be forgotten about, and down the road, the fake news sports writers are going to say he was never really all that good, the Bucs never won anything with him, not without Brady, etc.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

TOMMY MORDUE – You can’t trade free agents unless you sign them first, at which point they’re not free agents.

  15. Beeej Says:

A starting inside LB in the NFL is worth $10-$11 mil. If we dont give it to LD we give it to someone else

  16. BUC IT Says:

Yeah but Tommy is on to something…. if there is a way to get the number 1 overall pick from the bears we should think about it. Dangle Godwin and this year and next year’s first so we can draft Bryce Young.

  17. sasquatch Says:

    ^ No.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

BUC IT – I already suggested this, call Chicago, offer up Jensen, Donovan Smith, Mike Evans and our first rounder to move up. For Chicago, they got a good young QB, and this would fix their offensive line and give him a true #1 WR, that’s why they might go for it. On the downside, all those guys only have 1-year left on their deals, so you’re not going to get full value on any of them because of that. But, I’d still offer it. It would have to be tempting to Chicago, to, in one sweep, make themselves into a playoff team.

  19. Oddball Says:

Or better yet get rid of everybody and acquire 53 draft picks for this year.

  20. sasquatch Says:

We are not trading Godwin. Nothing Licht and Bowles have said have indicated that such a thing would even be considered. Everything they’ve ever said about him indicates he’s considered one of the core players on the team, not just for talent and productivity, but for work ethic and leadership.

  21. Jack Clark Says:

Bro it’s no point in keep dean if we’re going to lose anyway. Might as well make the best out of our next 4-5 losing seasons by fixing our salary cap.

RIP no risk it no biscuit 🙏

  22. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Dean has been a good cornerback, but not elite. And he has injury concerns. With the salary cap and the Bucs in rebuild mode (even if some don’t want to acknowledge this), I don’t think it makes sense to sign him to big money. Instead, trade down from 19 for more picks, and draft 2 cornerbacks in the 2nd round like when we started Carlton and MJ Stewart. Hopefully Licht learned his lesson not to draft a relatively unathletic CB even if they are “tough”. This is a good draft for CB and we can definitely get at least one immediate starter in the 2nd round.

  23. dmatt Says:

Let Dean walk. He’s either hurt or slow to react to a play. He doesn’t play like an elite corner. He has the physical attributes i.e., height, weight, n speed but lacks the mental aspect of the game. He’s passive at tackling n slow to react to certain plays. I say take a risk on 2 yr practice squad player Don Gardner. He’s a heads up type player who is physical with speed. He knows how to play the ball, he tackles well n in my opinion give him some play time n he won’t disappoint.
He is ready to prove himself to the league. Keep CDavis n give McCollum one more year to prove himself. SMB n JDean have been in the league going on five years n both are average Joe players to me. .

  25. Goatfarmer Says:

Too bad you can’t create cap space by firing inept stooges who coach your team. Bowels and Armweak would be so gone.

We traded for Gruden and gave up two ones and two twos.

Bowels wouldn’t fetch the liver of a dead horse, although his performance makes me realize I’m going to need one.

  26. Goatfarmer Says:

It’s time to stop worrying. Jason knows he’s got a compete loser for a head coach who he is stuck with for maybe two years. Truly it’s whatever. Trade everybody, cut the ones you can’t trade, trade down until you have 271 7th round picks over 37!years (you know – build for the future) , start Trashk, bring in a few retired offensive linemen to compete with him for QB1, draft a kicker and move him to center. Pick up a FA center and let him kick.

Make the Swashbucklers an all-male burlesque review, with Glazerboy Beards. And wheel Norm Snead out onto the field every game wearing a pirate hat and an eyepatch, he can be the new mascot.

It’s all good because woohoo Toad’s Bowels.

  27. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Dean is much better than Davis.
