“Worth Salvaging”

March 1st, 2023

Bucs assistant head coach/co-offensive line coach Harold Goodwin.

Man, Todd Bowles sure gave a bizarre endorsement this afternoon at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Bowles was asked about retaining offensive line coaches Joe Gilbert and Harold Goodwin while many other offensive coaches were let go in January.

While Bowles praised Gilbert and Goodwin, he implied they were on the chopping block but a better option wasn’t found.

“It takes everybody to have a run game; it’s not just put on two offensive line coaches,” Bowles said. “They are two very good football coaches. I didn’t want to lose them right away if I didn’t have a megastar coming in trying to replace them, which [is] hard to do. They’re hard to come by out there. Those two guys work hard and they grind. I see them in the building all the time. They’re trying to get better. They do things to get better. I thought they were worth salvaging.”

Joe sure felt that was an odd way to talk about two Super Bowl and well-established position coaches still on the staff. Joe isn’t knocking Bowles. The candor is refreshing.

Joe thinks the O-line coaches have proven themselves over the past four Bucs seasons. There are so many success stories, and that includes developing players and having no-name guys ready to play. See Aaron Stinnie in 2020, among others.

    The chicken or the egg?
Run game stank because of the OLine
Or… The OLine stank because of a lousy run game?

Things that make you go hmmm.

  2. Usfbuc Says:

I’m not sure that was an endorsement at all. I would actually be looking for a new employer if my boss talked about me that way.

  3. Goatfarmer Says:

More proof that the one who needs to be fired the most is the one saying all the stupid sh!t and revving up for. a fifth consecutive losing season.

  4. Turbo Says:

Joe’s i’m sure you’ve seen the study done by Boston University, about 92% of former nfl players have been found to have CTE. If that’s true our HC probably has CTE!?!?

  5. FortMyersDave Says:

Sounds like he canned the F coaches and kept the D coaches with the hope that they can at least be worthy of a gentleman’s C next season. Kind of like he said, no one better wanted to come here and the new OC did not have someone in mind so we are stuck with these 2 guys who in all fairness had garbage to work with besides Wirfs and Mason. Hopefully things improve with Jensen returning but that giant hole on the other side of the line where D Smith stacked up penalties is a glaring weakness.

There’s only one way to find out and Joe is very confident Bowles doesn’t want to find out, not that he would ever know the results.

  7. magic mushroom Says:

Bowles doesn’t dress up his comments for public consumption, to his credit.

  8. Delusional Intelligence Says:

I’m not knocking Bowles, but at Harold “Goodie” Goodwin’s introductory press conference I thought he was possibly head coach material. Was why I pined for Goodie to be available for a press conference. That way Ira & the Joes could ask him about the run game. I was intrigued to hear if Harold was going to be as candid as he typically is. Unfortunately, it never came to pass. IMHO he would be a great guest for the Ira Podcast. Bottom line, you don’t discard quality coaches or players without good reason. Unless you are Lovie Smith.

  9. Bucco Bruce Says:

The more time goes the more I am liking the idea of Bijan Robinson. If he really is that good at least it would take pressure off the QB and also have a fun rusher to watch again. Not to mention he should be good enough despite any oline weakness so long as it isn’t too bad. Do we need a bunch of spots filled sure but imo we are rebuilding if not now then soon. We can fill maybe LB and DB in the 2nd and 3rd.

  10. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Wow. If I was one of these coaches, I would remind Bowels of the 4 seasons out of 5 he has had a losing record as a head coach and tell him he cannot be salvaged.

  11. David Says:

Bizarre statement. But yeah, it was not them. It was an entirely new interior
O line and mainly losing Jensen. Add to that BL‘s playcalling, possibly coming from Bowles… There you go

  12. Letsbucinggo Says:

These guys must not have an pride in themselves at all.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Bowles … ‘ I thought they were worth salvaging.’

A true head-shaker. Made me remember a joke about one of our very out-spoken ex-presidents where the president’s advisor said to him, after one of the president’s head-shaker comments … ‘Boss, there are inside words and there are outside words. Those were inside words’.

You don’t EVER criticize or evaluate your subordinates in public. That ‘candor’ isn’t ‘refreshing’ Joe; it damages your subordinates in some others’ eyes & can adversely impact their careers. Not a good look for Todd Bowles IMO. And a hint Todd: You also might be ‘worth salvaging’ (in your words), but not if you keep making dumb comments to the media like that.

  14. Hodad Says:

The real question is was Bowles worth salvaging? I’m sure the glazers asked themselves that when they decided to retain Todd. The next time they ask, Bowles won’t like the answer.

  15. Duane Says:

It’s not the coaches fault when a team loses three of its previous five offensive linemen for the entire season, and then one of the remaining two has his worst season ever and qualifies easily as the worst left tackle in the league (allowed the most sacks of any LT in the league, and was the most penalized including the most drive killing offensive holding penalties of any LT in the league).

That is the coaches fault? If one needs to blame anyone it’s on Licht and his failure to provide a decent roster for the offensive line coaches to work with.

  16. ATLBucsFan Says:

“I see them in the building all the time.” We see comments like this all the time. It means nothing. In my 40 years of working I’ve seen a lot of people in the building but they still don’t do their jobs well. Wish this line could be stricken from a coaches ‘evaluation’ of both players and coaches.

  17. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

They’re better at their jobs than he is at his.

BA also didnt have a megastar replace him.

  18. confido75 Says:

Nice way to lead, Bowles! If you were my boss I would be looking for the door. What a moron!

  19. Thisisouryear!! Says:

If I were a higher up at OBP hearing that statement to the public, I’d be wondering if we need a new HC. That statement should never be made.

  20. Allen Lofton Says:

They both proved themselves – lets see if Todd Bowles does the same

  21. Curse of Gruden Says:

Leadership at its finest. Way to motivate the troops. What a maroon.

  22. Jvato24 Says:

Totally dumb comment, we wonder why lacked motivation and team morale, just based on this comment he doesn’t get it, is this Bowles trying to do tough talk like BA, if so, please stop.

  23. Bosch Says:

I guess we can add inability to choose words to Bowels growing list of weak attributes.

  24. NEfan Says:

Could you imagine the crap BA would have received if he ever made that statement about Bowles & BL? Savlage them, what are they livestock?

  25. unbelievable Says:

    Yikes lol

  26. NEfan Says:

sasquash, no woke, I’m mean words of wisdom on this article?
