Thomas Brown Is Eighth Known Candidate For Bucs Offensive Coordinator

February 11th, 2023

The parade of hopefuls continues at One Buc Palace.

The Bucs have interviewed Rams assistant head coach Thomas Brown for their vacant offensive coordinator gig.

Brown, 36, was a stud running back at the University of Georgia and got into college coaching after three years in the NFL. Sean McVay scooped him up to coach Rams running backs in 2020. A year later, he was named assistant head coach and the Rams won the Super Bowl.

Brown became a hot name in a hurry.

This season he also coached Rams tight ends and was a passing game coordinator. He has interviewed in this hiring cycle for the Chargers and Commanders offensive coordinator gigs.

Joe, obviously, can’t say much about Brown. He doesn’t have a playcaller or quarterback-development track record.

He does check a box, however.

2. SB~LV Says:

Bwahahahahaa
lol after all these names they at least be able to say
“We wanted him all the time “

3. SB~LV Says:

Please fire Todd Bowles
Actually he is being used by the Bucs
He lacks leadership skills
Probably a fine man and defensive coach
Simply a Peter Principle check casher now

4. Alanbucsfan Says:

Well, he was part of the 2017 Miami Hurricanes collapse.

5. BucG Says:

I’m ok with them making the rounds. They are gaining all types of perspective on what other teams are doing. It does provide a tiny bit of an optic hit, but people won’t care once someone is hired.

6. Marine Buc Says:

No playcalling experience.

No QB development experience.

Has spent 3 seasons coaching running backs.

So what exactly makes this dude qualified to be the Bucs OC?

Is he a snazzy dresser?

7. DoooshLaRue Says:

Marine Buc,

More specifically, can he rock a flat bill?

8. Allbuccedup Says:

Apparently no one wants to work with the Bowles trainwreck. If we interview any coaches from the Eagles or Chiefs we could be up to ten. Face it Bowles last four seasons have resulted in losing seasons. I am positive number 5 will be the worse yet.

9. John Sinclear Says:

I hear Lovie Smith’s looking for a job!

10. SB~LV Says:

Why isn’t
James Wilder in the Ring of Honor ?

11. D-Rok Says:

Bowles: “I dunno Jason, I just can’t put my finger on what I want in an OC.”

Licht: “That’s OK, little feller, just keep interviewing, someone will surely pique your interest eventually.”

2027:
Licht: “I didn’t really MEAN eventually, Todd. You’re outta here!”

12. A Bucs Fan Says:

I hope it’s Brian Johnson from the Eagles. Read a story about him today and how he developed Jalen Hurts and Gardner Minshew that was surprisingly well done given the source. That combined with his previous success with Kyle Trask I think it would makes him a glove fit.

13. Marine Buc Says:

@ Dooosh

LOL!

Absolutely – the flat billed cap is probably mandatory at this point…

14. Brian Says:

Indeed Doosh!

15. ChatGPT Says:

The author notes that Joe (presumably Joe Brady, the Buccaneers’ head coach) cannot say much about Brown, as he does not have a playcalling or quarterback development track record. This implies that the author has some reservations about Brown’s qualifications for the job, but this is not stated explicitly.

16. rrsrq Says:

Are they really doing their due diligence? Are they waiting for the eagles or chiefs assistants?
@Bucs fan, I think the Johnson as OC given his track record with Trask and also does he have an in on Richardson (who may have a similar game to Hurts), would be interesting

17. AllbuccedupLetd Says:

I think Brian Johnson would be a great choice but why would you leave a superbowl contender to go to a toilet bowl contender.

18. Joe Says:

“ChatGPT”

ROTFLMAO!!!

19. Joe Says:

why would you leave a superbowl contender to go to a toilet bowl contender.

Promotion and money.

20. unbelievable Says:

Lol @ everyone getting their panties in a bunch over this. Nothing wrong with conducting lots of interviews…

Anyone who is being honest knows this is not an attractive position with Todd Bowles going into the year already on the hot seat. Very unlikely we get the best candidate available.

That said, I still think they really want to interview Brian Johnson, which IMO would be the best hire if we are rolling with trask.

Everyone settle down.

21. BA’s Red Pen Says:

He comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree. If the dude was white all the typical idiots that commented above would be all in.

22. Gerald Yancy Says:

For this to be a Buc Fan place , Y’all are the most NEGATIVE bunch I’ve ever heard.
Bowles not leaving , JL not leaving. They allowed BA to step down and Bowles to take over , They believe in the staff or they would have FIRED them All not just those few , who really where attached to Brady more than Bowles.
Let TB pick his OC staff and see how it goes.
There is no rush to make a choice so why y’all so damn impatient?
There looking at longevity, great drafting, and building on the young guys that are HERE!
🛑 The whining and support the decisions that management makes or retire like Brady.

23. Goatfarmer Says:

Toad will hire Homer Simpson.

This.

I am believing more and more that the delay is due to them waiting until after the Superbowl to sign Brian Johnson…and all these other interviews are simply intelligence gathering and due diligence.

I also believe they want someone who is a new face that may eventually be promoted to head coach.

25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I do NOT believe Todd has anything to do with the hire. I think the Glazers finally trust Jason Licht.

26. Casual Observer Says:

Must be a record number of interviews. Or they are going for the record. Maybe an even dozen?

27. gbobucsfan Says:

They are going to hire the 12th candidate. Get it, 12th.

28. #99 the Big fella Says:

Gerald, I have been saying this for the longest time ..the bucs have one of the worst fan bases I have ever seen ..they are not loyal at all. It truly sucks. It does not matter who they hire as an offensive coordinator because this Fanbase is going to complain no matter what.

29. Dooley Says:

Brown interviewed for the Texans HC job this year, and the Miami HC gig last season. McVay is on record calling him a candidate for the Rams OC gig in 2023, so I could see why we’re taking a look at Thomas Brown. Coached Melvin Gordon in 2014, year after that joined Mark Richts’ staff in Georgia and coached Nick Chubb. Interesting, but remember there hasn’t been a trigger pulled on any of the candidates because the SB hasn’t been played and we’re supposedly interested in their OC, on top of the fact there 7-8 others teams looking for new OC hires. Like Schiano used to say, the situation is “fluid”

Easy Red Pen. Put down your glass of orange juice and take a deep breath.

31. Allbuccedup Says:

I guess Pep Hamilton got d__k in his face he wanted to stay in houston to watch his son play this fall so he turned down the bucs interview now hes out of a job.

32. Tye Says:

Bowels is holding this team back and causing the quality OCs to avoid Tampa like the plague…
Free agency will much of the same!..

33. Bobby M. Says:

Bowles is afraid to hire anyone with any ounce of ability to take over if he is failing next season. Once again he’s not geared to go for victory, he’s wired to try to not lose. Two different perspectives….you can see it in how he manages games, he doesn’t play to our strengths but instead focuses all his energy on minimizing our weaknesses which last yr was the defense would tire around late 3rd qtr and get gashed up the middle repeatedly. He put all the focus on clock management vs effectiveness. In NY the excuse was no QB, then he takes over here with Brady and his new excuse is Leftwich. Next it will be he wasn’t given enough time. His resume is 5 yrs of mediocre results, it’s not going to change.

34. EEK Says:

Can he be a head coach by mid season?

Is he interviewing for OC or eventual HC?

35. SufferingSince76 Says:

Have you ever been to a restaurant where there’s too many choices and you end up with something you didn’t really want because you felt pressured for time? I have and this feels like one of those times.

2027 !?!?!

Oh no! Please no! We gotta cut bait sooner than that!

37. HC Grover Says:

Looks perfect to go with Bowles. Maybe they can land him. Ready for the lost season after the Stupor Bowl that i will avoid.

38. Joe Swanson Says:

I think Todds holding out for Chan Gailey.

39. Tye Says:

Years ago there was a meme of Chip Kelley walking into a room, takes one look at Josh Freeman and walks right back out….

I think that meme can now be all these OCs walking in, one look at Bowels and NOPE (walks right back out)!

40. Joe Swanson Says:

If we interview Brian Johnson next week we will have to wait to see if the Eagle OC gets the colts gig. But I believe the colts are going for a defensive HC.

41. Cobraboy Says:

Who?

Is this what the bottom of the barrel is all about?

At least Mike Shula had a pedigree…

42. Kgh4life Says:

It’s getting ridiculous at this point.

43. The Anomaly Says:

No one wants the job

The reality is…it’s a one year BS job.

It will be a stain on your resume.

44. SKBucsFan Says:

Brian Johnson feom the Eagles would be the best choice to work with Trask.

45. Allbuccedup Says:

Gerald Lancy must be Lichts cousin

________

Coaching tree?
He’s 36 years old……. more like a coaching bush.
🙄

47. Marine Buc Says:

@ Dooosh

LOL…

These people are incapable of using logic.

They only have one card to play.

And it’s getting old folks.

Everyone should be hired based on their prior experience, character and history of success or failure…

Todd Bowles just fired BL. Is TB an “R” word?

48. DoooshLaRue Says:

Marine Buc,

Absolutely.
Most QUALIFIED person for the job…….. any job.

49. BucsNoles Says:

Can’t really blame anyone for not wanting the OC job:
Don’t know who the QB is
Coach is on a short leash
Big-name players will have to be let go due to salary cap
Arians will be out soon as well – at least if seems that way
None of the OC prospects so far are anything to write home about.
Let’s see what happens with the draft

50. John Sinclear Says:

“Let’s see what happens with the draft”

Maybe we could draft an Offensive Coordinator??

51. View from 132 Says:

Nothing wrong with this process. I’d interview every up and coming coach. A pro coach in his 30s will be circulating for years. This is just smart by the Glazers. Executive hiring 101.

52. Georger Says:

Brian Johnson, He needs to be interviewed. Eagles QB coach and Trask old OC.

53. Aceofaerospace Says:

I don’t care if he rocks a flat bill or not, just so he doesn’t wear one of those caps with the bill in the back or lord help us a cap with the bill on the side.

54. Destinjohnny Says:

Nobody wants the job
Funny you would think Jason lichts being such a good gm that people would be lining up…….
3 wins next year

55. steele Says:

Keep laughably lining up nobodies with minimal experience who still wanna shot, while legit NFL offensive architects and play callers…(crickets).

Who wants this job? A team that has declined and underperformed despite “talented veterans”, that just lost its QB marquee, the sole reason for any relevance, with no replacement, and a HC who wants yes-flunkies, reflections of Bowles, who don’t threaten him.

As Bobby M says, “Bowles is afraid to hire anyone with any ounce of ability to take over if he is failing next season. Once again he’s not geared to go for victory, he’s wired to try to not lose.”

The job will be filled by either a nobody for on-the-job training, or a former that can’t get hired by other teams.

56. HC Grover Says:

I do not think they even need an OC let The Mighty Bowles do it all.

57. Jaw1994 Says:

If they’re taking the time to make the right hire. I’m all in for it.

58. TankforCaleb Says:

So Doosh and marine buc can make all kinds of racist jabs like this guy only got an interview because he’s black but it’s not ok to call them out for it?

59. dbbuc711 Says:

Bucs need to interview Kliff Kingsbury.

60. chark Says:

who? who is next interview the offensive coordinator at Plant high school

61. Architek Says:

Hot mess.

62. AbucAway Says:

Imo, Brian Johnson checks the necessary boxes for our OC, and watching some interviews with him, I think he has the capacity to take over as HC when that time already passed… er.. when that time comes. Other teams will give him the sniff test and I’m thinking Indy may have an edge only because he will be their year 1 head coach rather than our year 2 HC. But there are boxes that this team checks for him that other teams can’t. I think we have about as good a shot as anyone.
If I’m team Glazer, he’s the horse I want.

63. IE Buc Says:

I would love Brian Johnson, Thomas Brown, or Todd Monken.

Unfortunately Brian Johnson might not available. Colts might be hiring Eagles OC Steinchen. If Steichen leaves, Brian Johnson is rumored to be promoted to Eagles OC.
