Bucs Hire Dave Canales As Offensive Coordinator

February 15th, 2023

New Bucs OC.

[UPDATE: 11:55 p.m.] The Bucs finally found an offensive coordinator.

Seahawks quarterback coach Dave Canales is your the guy, reports Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

There’s not a lot to go on with Canales. A quarterback coach doesn’t call plays and Canales has never served as a play-caller. He’s a long-time assistant for Seattle head coach Pete Carroll dating back to his USC days. In fact, Canales has never worked for another coach outside of Carroll since he was a tight ends coach at El Camino College in 2008.

Joe has a ton of respect for Carroll and given how Geno Smith rose from the dead this past year, hopefully Canales brings some of that mojo with him to the Bucs.

Seattle is a ground-and-pound team and Joe is sure there will be a significant emphasis on running the ball this fall with the Bucs. That’s what defensive head coaches do. It’s in their DNA. It’s who they are.

[UPDATE: 11:55 p.m.] Though the Bucs have yet to confirm the move, Canales’ bio on his Twitter account lists his occupation as the Bucs offensive coordinator.

    Who?

  2. RMbuc585 Says:

Yes we have a new coach but Geno Hayes is actually deceased, I am sure you meant Geno Smith

  3. Rod Munch Says:

So we’ll go from ‘no riskit no biscuit’ to one of the most boring and awful offenses in football. Great, that should sell some tickets and really get a top flight QB to want to come here.

Oh well, at least this cements the idea that Bowles will be fired after the season and we’ll clean house and have a clean slate in 2024, along with hopefully the #1 pick in the draft.

Sorry to all the people with season tickets this year.

  4. Old black man Says:

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  5. rrsrq Says:

Exciting, next… does he have the inside track on Geno. Never heard of this guy as a front runner, nut that’s how the Bucs roll

  6. Implosion Says:

What a dumpster fire this has become

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Out of every candidate I read about, this was literally the one I put at the very bottom of the list. No experience, comes from a boring backwards offense, brings nothing to the table.

At least all these idiots that think you win by running the ball, like it’s 1982, well, they’ll get their wish.

Also this cements that Derek Carr isn’t coming here, so at least that is a good thing.

  8. Medusa Says:

    Joe,

“Geno Hayes rose from the dead” is pretty poor taste

  9. NoLogicLeftwich Says:

    Go Bucs

  10. SB~LV Says:

I feel sorry for him after having had a history of working with a great coaching staff with Pete Carrol .
He is in for a culture shock with Todd Bowles, if he is married I can assure you his wife won’t care for Tampa and the summers after living in the PNW
I wish him the best and hope he is an improvement

  11. DungyDance Says:

It’s Dungy ball all over again. In other words, painful to watch. Only difference will be that we actually had a defense back then.

  12. Winky Says:

Now that he’s a Buc, he’s the best, and I can’t wait to see him help us to exciting and productive offense.

Welcome to the club, coach C.

    GO BUCS!!!

    ==============

    Dungy is a HOF’er.

Bowles can’t even hold his jock strap.

There is nothing with Bowles that is like Dungy.

  14. Tye Says:

SOOO.. Someone inexperienced Hired to be Bowles puppet….. Got it!

  15. mark2001 Says:

I can’t say much, but wish him the best. For him it is the next step in a hopefully long career and illustrious career….and a nice jump in organizational structure levels.

  16. Please Says:

If we sign Geno HAYES as our QB, we have reached new lows of incompetence.

  17. Curse of Gruden Says:

    Let the tanking begin.

  18. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Maybe they painstakingly interviewed them all and carefully selected the one most likely to help them succeed in tanking.

  19. Old black man Says:

You mother fluckers gonna be mad no matter what! Take your sour asses to another damn team! Go Bucs!

  20. mark2001 Says:

Rod…I agree with you. Comparing Bowles to Dungy or Reid is pretty ludicrous. I don’t think he meant that. I think he is just referring to some of those awful Offenses we saw in the Dungy years.

  21. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

This is the kind of guy we’re going to get in the situation we are in. It is what it is. I don’t hate his resume as thin as it is at the moment. At least he’s an offensive guy. Coulda been worse.

  22. mark2001 Says:

Actually, with a young guy that hasn’t called plays or developed a game plan, I think having a Veteran QB, that is very capable of audibling out of plays is probably a good thing, whomever that would be.

  23. Eric Says:

one of the few offenses our defense shut down last year.

This isnt Dungy ball, as he was very succesfull, more like the Lovie Smith era.

    yuck.

  24. mark2001 Says:

Yeah Ultra…it could have been O’Neil, who would have also brought Jameis in with him. LOL.

  25. Ramblin_Man Says:

I don’t think we can sign a dead man to play QB, we are the Bucs though. RIP Geno!

  26. Marine Buc Says:

I like this guy. He has been working with Pete Carroll since the USC days…

Look at what he was able to do with QB Geno Smith.

No matter what – I guarantee you this guy will be an upgrade over Byron Leftwhich.

    Nowhere to go but up.

  27. Youthxattack1 Says:

Carroll helped raise geno HAYES from the dead? Yikes!

  28. Buc4evr Says:

Wow, underwhelming. Now we just need Trask to start and we will be all set……
All set to have the number one draft pick next year.

I can’t wait for Bowles excuse that he is “hands off”on the offense when it tanks next year. This is going to be the den of destruction. 3 wins or less.

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

Obviously this dude Blowes, but since that’s who his headless coich is, no surprise.

    Hugely disappointed, but not surprised.

    2-15 here we come.

Hey Toad, enjoy your next career as an insurance adjuster. You certainly have experience with disasters.

  30. Jerry Says:

If Leftwich’s runs up the gut on every first down made you angry last year, you may as well skip watching this season. You’ll be breaking your TV every week.

  31. Buc4evr Says:

    So is Geno next?

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

Well..Come on Buc fans, you demanded Leftwhich be fired after 2 consecutive successful seasons. And you got your wish. Good luck with a new OC who has never been an OC in his life. Right now I am LMAO. Be careful what you wish for.

  33. mark2001 Says:

I would just ask, is 13 years as an assistant coach normal? I mean, I really don’t know. Other than QB coach, I wonder what his responsibilities have been, beyond QB coach? I do like Carroll.

  34. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I love this hire. He was my first choice from the remaining candidates. IMO Pete Carroll doesn’t get the respect he deserves. All he does is win with what he has. IMO Carroll is the nfc’s version of bill Bellicek.

  35. Sunken Ship Says:

I have changed the tense. The ship is on the bottom of the bay now.

    Seattle? Meh of all mehs.

See you at the ‘24 draft. Sorry season ticket holders lolololololol

  36. mark2001 Says:

Mike. You really think we caused Lefty to be fired? Wow…I didn’t know we had that kind of influence. I may need a bigger pillow tonight to sleep on, since my head has gotten so inflated with all that influence.

    ————

That would be just like the Bucs, to go chase a one-year flash in the pan, give him big money. The same people who wanted the Bucs to sign Bridgewater, and not Brady, they’ll be the ones full in on Geno.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

    ———

Very true. Although the issue with that offense, with Leftwich, was that you had Tom Brady and the offense was literally built around throwing the ball deep.

But yeah, it’s gonna be first down up the middle, 2nd down up the middle, 3rd down screen pass. It’s the 1988 Ray Perkins offense coming back in style.

  39. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Buc4ever

If he came at the right price I would be OK with that…

If Geno wants $25-$30M per season I will pass.

  40. D-Rome Says:

I agree with you Mike Johnson. Who did Bucs fans expect to get as an OC? I am not qualified to evaluate NFL coaches. Maybe he’ll be great. Maybe he’ll be Marcus Arroyo. We’ll find out in 11 months how good he was.

  41. Dooley Says:

Canales has been apart of some pretty solid & sucessful Seahawks teams. Not too familiar with their OC Shane Waldron, but I know he was hired away from McVays staff which is a plus for Canales. Another great reference on his resume would be the team working under Darrell Bevell, who with what Seattle has had in terms of talent has gotten some pretty good results. Glad this is out of the way, and just in time for draft season to go from buzz to boom & bust.

    ———–

But we’re not hiring Pete Carroll. Also Pete Carroll has always won on defense, we’re hiring his QB coach.

Also, how many of those Belichick assassiants ever do anything once they leave him?

  43. Bucfan94 Says:

I’m ok with this. We weren’t getting a big name anyways with Bowles on the hot seat this year. And besides, he wasn’t the play caller in Seattle. Could very well prefer to be a little more aggressive. I’ve seen it many times where a position coach prefers a different type of Offense or Defense than what the team they came from ran. Could obviously be just like Seattle’s still, but he did a amazing job with Geno and Wilso (look at him now). And too all the haters out there, if it doesn’t work out well be in excellent position to try and Land Caleb Williams, or another good QB in the draft next year. Seems like a win to me. So let’s see what he and possibly Trask can do before we nail the coffin shut.

  44. D-Rok Says:

Wow, and not in the excited way. Who knows, maybe he’ll be good?

  45. Eric Says:

Please tell me we are not bringing in Geno Hayes.

This might make the Schiano years look good.

    ———-

Dungy was a great coach. But he couldnt hire a good OC if his life depended on it. THAT is why the Bucs fired him. And THAT is why the Colts didn’t let him run the offense in Indy. Obviously you don’t remember his offenses when he was here. They were HORRIBLE. The Glazers got sick of it too. That’s why they paid a boatload for Gruden.

Bowles is going to fail hard for the exact same reasons. He’s pushing a offensive philosophy that is obsolete in today’s NFL.

  50. rrsrq Says:

I only have one question- was he involved in the play call in the Super Bowl that said “Russ throw the ball at the one yard line on second down when you have Marshawn Lynch”, that’s really all I want to know

  51. mark2001 Says:

Hey, I’m not going to criticize him. As I tried to tell you, we weren’t going to get a big name, experienced, front runner. Give him a chance. He is our guy now, and let’s hope he succeeds.

  52. FortMyersDave Says:

Thisisouryear! Yes Carroll is a lot like Bellicheat as far as getting the most out of the talent available, unlike Toilet Bowels and I like your enthusiasm. However, coach Bellicicek also has had some nimrod assistants like Matt Patricia so I certainly hope that Canales does not turn out like that. Nonetheless, he will be better than Leftwich as Matrine Buc said, there is no way but up. I disagree with Goatfarmer a bit though I agree the team will be very bad. I doubt if the Bucs go 2-15, that would mean they would get the #1 pick, nah, they will win just enough to miss out on the generational players like they did when they got Gaines Adams instead of Calvin Johnson or Joe Thomas and part time player Vea instead of Quinton Nelson. I say 4-13/5-12.

  53. Rod Munch Says:

Jerry – I was literally a season ticket holder back then. The Bucs had one of the BEST defenses in NFL history, and Dunn and Alstott, and complete trash at QB. There’s a reason they ran the ball. Also, shocker, there’s a reason why when he went to Indy, and he had Payton Manning, they threw the ball.

Learn the basics kiddo, then get back to me.

  54. mark2001 Says:

Jerry, I remember those Bucs offenses very well. Tony had so much loyalty to his guys, that he got to the point where it just wasn’t going to happen here. Give the Indy owner credit…he knew Tony had just the skills he needed. And it meshed together nicely, into a SB victory for him.

  55. Goatfarmer Says:

Cananals will make folks pine for the days of Bmoron Leftwurst. This is so great! But who could expect anyone competent or even mediocre to take the job as chief deck hand on the Titanic?

As was said, this dude is so great, his offense couldn’t do anything, even against the Bucs! So of course, that performance impressed the Toadster enough to want the guy as his new very offensive curdinator. Large curds at that.

    Damn.

    The vodka’s gone.

  56. Acidsid75 Says:

    Wow.
Give the dude a chance. Can’t wait for this to blow up I’m y’all’s faces. Have some damn faith. Go Bucs!!

  57. Bosch Says:

Well, that seals it. Bowels will remain HC in 2023. Get ready for a 3 win season. Let’s hope it gets us first pick in 2024 in addition to a new HC.

  58. Kgh4life Says:

We have to see what the guy can do. It can’t be much than BL. Hopefully he brings some fresh new ideas. In addition, the bucs OC job isn’t the most attractive. No QB with experience, shaky oline and a HC whose not guaranteed a third season.

  59. Bucfan94 Says:

It wasn’t Canales offense in Seattle we beat lol. He was only a position coach who helped Geno improve alot.

  60. mark2001 Says:

GFarmer. We were at the point where there weren’t many options at the professional level. Like I said, I have no reason but just have hope that he will succeed. But as a Buc fan, I hope this long shot hits. Sometimes it does.

  61. Zwak Says:

With the first pick in the 2024 NFL draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers pick…

  62. sasquatch Says:

    Complainers gonna complain.

Let’s see what he can do. I’m not overly concerned that he hasn’t called plays before. Plenty of first time play callers succeed. Some head coaches didn’t call plays until they got head coaching jobs and succeeded.

I’m certain that he will be asked to be more effective running the ball. I’m not sure that means ground and pound. I mean, with Evans and Godwin, are you really going to mindlessly pound the ball when you can pick up chunks. Being able to do both is ideal.

We shall see. He gets a chance with me… Pete Carroll is an excellent head coach and if he learned from Pete, he should be fine.

    Meanwhile, complainers gonna complain.

  65. Vincente Fernandez Says:

This guy has been the OC for a few hours and people are already giving up. Humans really do suck sometimes.

  66. Voice of Truth Says:

Could not have expected any different outcome with Toast at HC – a position coach that’s never been a coordinator, or called plays at any level

The road to 4 wins is under construction

  67. Ufcguy Says:

Dungy mentality. Same as Bowles. Both stubborn both lost bc they won’t adapt to the new nfl

  68. Chris Says:

Least likely to replace Bowles. How could Washington secure an interview with Bienemy for OC but not the Bucs? Perhaps Bowles feared he would take his job.

  69. Rod Munch Says:

Balanced attack = 1st down: run off guard left, 2nd down: then off guard right, 3rd down: then up the middle. Very balanced.

Actually who knows, maybe he’s great.

But what I do know is that Seattle has consistently been one of the most boring teams to watch on offense for like 15-years now, and the NFL is literally in the business of entertainment.

Personally I’d prefer to get just let ChatGPT call the game. I guarantee you it would do a better job than Leftwich.

  70. mark2001 Says:

I’m just wondering who the guys will be that will fill out the staff. I don’t think he will have an easy job on that score.

With any luck he works out. If not he will likely be shown the door along with Bowles next year. Not the guy I wanted but welcome aboard.. I guess

  76. CrackWise Says:

Dose he speak in a way the average AMERICAN can understand? Thats all I was hoping for in our new OC. That alone will make a HUGE difference when it comes to our annual “we gotta work on our communication” excuses.

  77. Go Bucs Go Says:

    Welcome Dave…
But wow… once Brady is out, there goes “the standard.”
Maybe I’m still drunk with euphoria over what transpired the last 3 seasons. The reality is finally setting in.

    Go Bucs!

  78. Rod Munch Says:

So this guy has worked for Carroll for 13-years and never got past the QB coach position? Wow…

What’s the record on assistants that can’t elevate themselves with a team, that suddenly have big breakout years after leaving? I know it happens, but I can’t think of a single example.

It just sounds like a really really bad, doomed to fail hire. But who knows. Also it’s not the worst thing in the world if he’s a terrible hire as I’m fine with the team tanking in 2023, cleaning up the cap, and being ready to go with an all-new coaching staff in 2024.

  79. Mike S Says:

How much time does Pete Carroll have left? This hire makes sense in terms of who would take the job and probably they got the best guy they could get.

    Now time will tell.

  80. Simeon97 Says:

He should probably find a rental, because this staff will be gone in 12 months.

  81. Stebobucsfan Says:

What I don’t understand is, so many are sinking the Bucs ship already. First Canales may have been the Bucs best choice with so many questions about the team now like, who’s going be the QB, how long is Bowles gonna be around and how much talent will the Bucs be able to sign because of being in salary cap hell. Remember Philly was in the Super Bowle and I had never heard of those coordinators til they started winning. I don’t even think the head coach was big or well known name around the NFL. So before I start to criticize I am gonna wait to see who the other position coaches are to be hired and what system the Bucs are gonna run next season

  87. Power of Pewter Says:

Bucs: $55M over the cap, only one 3rd string QB on roster who has attempted 4 passes in career, and a defensive HC who’s on the hot seat to produce. Nothing there to suggest we were ever going to get a top tier OC interested in the job.

Give him low starter contract with incentives…
    15 mill base + some perks……

I’m actually not hating this idea…
Geno Smith has MATURED!!!! The kid played awesome last year 🤷🏻‍♂️…

  96. IE Buc Says:

I don’t get the negativity by Bucs fans on this hire. I applaud Bowles for at least thinking outside the box, not going for retreads, or the Arians ol’ boys club. Bowles actually was looking at young up and coming assistants. A young gun with some fresh ideas and innovation.

The way a lot of fans are complaining you think they would rather see a retread like Greg Roman, Jim Bob Cooter, or Pat Schumur instead of a fresh face. I give Bowles credit for not doing that or even going back to the old tired Arians well and elevating somebody like Harold Goodwin.

  97. Sal Says:

    Tank for caleb #!!

  98. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So the next question is, who is he going to bring in to fill out his offensive staff?

  99. Buddha Says:

I like this hire. Twelve years with a likely hall of fame Coach, a coach who took him with him from USC to the Seahawks. He has coached on Super Bowl winning team. Many offensive coordinators begin as quarterback coaches. The guy is young and hungry. It irritates me to see so many so-called fans bad mouthing the new OC before he even begins his job. How would you like to start a job with the public you serve saying “you suck.” Come on folks “grow up!”. Many of you act as if you want Bowles to fail. That’s not only mean-spirited, it’s cruel. Most of you demanded that the Left with be fired. The management fired him. Bowles didn’t tell Gronk to retire; or the All pro guard to retire. He didn’t cause the Pro Bowl center to miss the entire season or the starting running back to get fat and slow. I believe the jury is out on Bowles and as a fan I am rooting for him to succeed.

  100. sasquatch Says:

  102. Vlad The Impaler Says:

I just figure if you’re buying this hire then you might be in the market for some valuable real estate too

  103. Ben Harvey Says:

Not sure if there were any better candidates. I was rooting for Johnson but he is likely becoming the Eagles OC. Canales has a decent resume. Passing game coordinator, QBs coach Wrs coach. He has been around all phases of the offense. Anyone is better than Leftwich, maybe Canales had a big part in Smith’s development or maybe it is the Caroll effect? Time will tell just like it did with Leftwich when Arians left.

  104. Cobraboy Says:

    Who?

  105. Pewter Power Says:

The dumpster fire was Byron leftwich, he’ll be an instant upgrade by default. Whatever plan he pitched to Bowles and the glazer boys hit home and I doubt it had anything to do with a rebuild. No one wants to oversee that in their first year as a coordinator

    ============

How is he thinking outside of the box? He literally went the most conventional route you can go, he got a guy from a run heavy team that has an offense stuck in 1984.

That’s the opposite of ‘outside the box’ thinking.

Maybe he turns out great, does an amazing job, but I legit don’t know how anyone could possibly be excited about this. There’s nothing exciting here, it’s the most dull, boring hire you can make. Doesn’t mean it’s the wrong hire, but it’s not exciting in any way.

  107. Weston Says:

I see people complaining he’s trash cause it took 13 years to become a OC from a assistant. But how’s that bad? He’s 41. I see many people not get a coordinator job in the NFL til their 40+. He may be very good as a coordinator. Even if he runs a boring Offense, if we get points and win it won’t matter. Well probably still have a decent defense. he could very well develop Trask like he did with Geno and Wilson. Just give him a chance.

I read on a different site an unbelievable stat, literally meaning I do not believe it. But they said the Bucs had been turned down 11 times on their OC pick. No way in the world that is true, but it would make this hire make sense. When you’re picking off a QB coach that has been with a team for 13-years and never elevated themselves, you’re hitting the bottom of the barrell. Also shows how much Bowles must hate all the Arians guys since there’s multiple people on the offense who would have been dramatically more qualified for this job.

Clearly Bowles is purging all traces of Arians on offense. Amazing that swing by Bowles considering that Arians literally handed him a team that Vegas had as odds on favorite to go to the SB for the NFC.

  111. Oneilbuc Says:

Old Black man . You ain’t lieing lol 🤣🤣 it wouldn’t have matter who the OC they snig they were going to be mad about it. They wanted the OC who call the plays when we won a superbowl out because of Brady bad play on the field. And now they mad about a guy who had Geno Smith looking like a all time great and they mad 😡😡. This fan base on here don’t care about winning as long as they have popular players or coaches they are happy lol 🤣 . I told you this is the weak links of the fan base on this site!!

It makes perfect sense. You just don’t understand English tenses. I wrote in the PAST TENSE. Meaning, when Jameis was drafted, before he took a Bucs snap, you all were dancing in the streets. And yet he sucked. Now, before Canales has called a Bucs play, you’re doing the same thing – judging him before he’s had a chance to prove himself. You guys do that a lot around here, don’t you?

  115. Oneilbuc Says:

Old Black man. You ain’t lieing bro they wanted the OC we win the super bowl out of here because Brady sucked this year. And now we have a guy who had Geno Smith looking like a all time great and they mad about that. Lol 😂

I don’t know anything about this guy, it appears he’s been an offensive coach for many years. A classic Bowles hire. Not an offensive architect of any renown. Has never called plays. Will not threaten to take over from Bowles.

A young nobody from a conservative smashmouth system that, in even its heyday with the likes of Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch, struggled to score and depended on defense to win games. Then fell apart when the core of that defense left or got old. Then was unable to develop Drew Lock. Claim to fame? A surprising season from Geno Smith, mostly due to individual effort by Geno Smith.

    Seattle won’t miss him.

So a guy who never called plays. Okay. (Tom Brady, be glad you are gone.)

That means Bowles can. Handoff up the middle on first down….handoff…handoff…punt. Leftwich 2.0.

I’m sure Dick Sherman will have something to say about this guy.

Yeah, except that’s not what his trajectory has been. Try reading something other than the hate posts.

No playcalling experience anywhere at any time. This is a huge red flag.

Plenty of first time NFL OC’s haven’t called plays anywhere, and even some head coaches didn’t start being a playcaller until they become a HC.

    Give the guy a chance…

Or just join in the chorus of whiners and complainers, crybabies and b!tches.

  129. Duane Says:

This is the result when the front office does not have adequate contingencies in place. You dont have to be a hater to recognize that this hire has less OC experience than Bowles does, and not likely to be successful. Hoping this is not a prelude to a ball control offense. Its not an interesting or entertaining style in the modern game, and this team seems to be soft under a Bowles regime. The team should play to its strengths and not nostalgic musings of a bridge HC.

  130. Rod Munch Says:

sasquatch – Reid became a head coach after 7-years in the NFL. Also he was the QB coach AND assistant head coach, then became a head coach. Completely different skill set than being a OC.

Also this guy was the QB coach, then the passing game coordinator, then reverted back to the QB coach, which sounds like a demotion — although I have no idea if it is or not.

Anywho, the guy isn’t an interesting hire, sounds like someone who was a desperation hire. But I do legitimately hope I’m wrong and we’re not going to just see another Mike Shula offense out there like it’s 1987 at Alabama all over again.

In the meantime I’ll mock and make fun of it, but if he does well, I’ll absolutely be more than happen to give him all the credit in the world. Heck, I HATED Leftwich since he got here, but the 3 or 4 times a year that he’d make a good call, I’d gushingly give him credit for it.

  131. Bangkok Bucs Fan Says:

All the people complaining need to realize that this is the least attractive OC job in the league. What did you really expect with no QB, 50 million over the cap, dead man walking coach and a likely tank job next year.

  132. RagingBrisket Says:

sasquatch- what plays from what playbook will he be running? I’m all for the guy succeeding but I don’t see how this hire with zero experience calling plays at any level of football is a recipe for success. Explain it to me?

  133. Oxycondoms Says:

Geno smith a free agent used to play for bowles. Trask fans have competition

  134. Rod Munch Says:

LUVMYBUCS – I know they intereviewed all those guys, but the other site claimed ALL of them turned down the Bucs. That’s the part I find to be completely unbelievable.

We’ll never know, but I would be interested to find out how many of them did in fact get an offer and then refuse the job, and if they did, why? Why take the interview if you’re not willing to take the job? What did Bowles say in the interview that would make someone turn down the job? Again, that’s if it even happened, which I doubt. But I’m sure some of those guys got an offer.

  135. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Did our interviewers merely flip a coin in order to make a hiring decison? Was this the only guy who would say “Hell yes, I’ll take the job.”? 😊

Seriously, the expectation has to be that we determined that this man is going to be a real upgrade as our offensive coordinator. There would have been no point in firing Byron Leftwich otherwise.

You are right, Buddha, some of our fans talk as if they really want Bowles to fail so that they can feel smart or something.

  136. Stebobucsfan Says:

Leftwich’s only OC experience was as a mid-season replacement in AZ.

Canales has a much longer coaching history than Lefty.

  140. Rod Munch Says:

Stebobucsfan – Leftwich was not a real OC, he was an Arians lackey who has had 2-years without Arians telling him what to do in games, and in those two years, he’s had THE worst offense in the NFL and one of the worst offenses in the NFL.

Now it is fair to question why you’d fire Leftwich only to hire a guy who has never called a game at any level, in particular when you have guys on staff who HAVE called plays and done well.

That tells me Bowles is just purging Arians guys, wants this to be ‘his’ team. No idea why since Bowles has been a head coach for years and never done anything.

From the Bucs side, they have to give Bowles whatever he wants since they’re just going to fire him after 2023 anyways. Before they do that, they have to give him his guys.

It’s a shame, however, since I think Bowles is a very very good DC. He’s just not HC material, yet because they gave him the HC title, they now have to fire him after the team puts up another losing record, when the team would be best served to just put Bowles back at DC.

You all hating on the OC hire citing the boring Seahawks offense that only runs should actually look at their stats from last year.

Their rushing yards 2042 ours 1308 = 43 more rushing yards per game
They averaged more yards rushing than us per play.

Probably most importantly they scored more points than us last year. The only areas they were actually worse than us really was turnovers and sacks. They had a +2 turnover ratio and we had a -2. They gave up 44 sacks to our 22.

  176. Usfbuc Says:

The Seahawks offense was also slightly better on both 3rd and 4th down conversions too.

You don’t have to be wide-open chucking the ball all over to have an offense that wins. I doubt his background is gonna make him a ground-and-pound OC. That’s just fear-mongering by people who love to hate.

  188. nick houllis Says:

Let’s be realistic people. we have no qb. the head coach is already on a warm seat, and a losing season will give him a 50-50 shot at being fired. what kind of o coordinator is going to be looking to come here?? oh and the qb may or may not be on the team.

then ask yourself, how many of the well named coaches and assistants who have come here, have worked out? the offensive coordinator from buffalo was probably greated with same feelings in New York last year. all he did was take a team without talent, expected to win 4 games (which would have doubled previous years total) and took them to playoffs.

so truth is, we don’t have a bloody clue. lets see how things turn out. no risk it no biscuit worked with Brady, not with Winston. 4 yards and a cloud of dust works for Seattle, sf, nyjets, Indi last year, and a few other teams. its how you keep passing teams on the bench. its how you develop a good red zone offense,

and the new oc may surprise you, he may not be the book cover you’ve painted him out to be.
