Another Name Floated For Offensive Coordinator

January 25th, 2023

Eagles assistant Kevin Patullo.

Could the Bucs be poaching a guy from the Eagles? An NFL insider thinks so.

Jeremy Fowler of BSPN had a coaching rumor mill posted at the four-letter this morning. There he unearthed another name that may be in the mix to replaced failed and fired Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. That is Eagles offensive assistant Kevin Patullo.

Perhaps Fowler is connecting dots here. Patullo was Bucs coach Todd Bowles’ quarterback coach with the Jets and he apparently worked closely with rotten Ryan Fitzpatrick. Boy, there’s a résumé builder.

Joe hopes that by spending time with the Eagles, Patullo has evolved as a coach.

Chan Gailey was the Jets’ offensive coordinator and this guy is just horrid unless you like 1960s ground-and-pound with quarterbacks who can’t hit the broad side of a barn. Here are some quarterbacks Gailey, a former defensive meathead coach, had a hand in grooming: Mike Tomczak, Kordell Stewart, Tyler Thigpen, Reggie Ball, Jay Fiedler and Fitzpatrick.

Just reading that list had Joe running to the bathroom to yak.

The only time Gailey ever worked with a quarterback worth two cents was when he coached Troy Aikman with the Cowboys in Aikman’s final years in the NFL. Patullo worked with Gailey at three different stops: Kansas City, Buffalo and New York.

In short, Gailey is brutal. And the Bucs are interested in a guy groomed by Gailey??? God help us all!

But then, Patullo has been around the Eagles, who are using a variation of Lincoln Riley’s offense with Philadelphia. And Jalen Hurts, who played for Riley at Oklahoma, sure has improved.

(And guess who else plays for Riley? #CollapseForCaleb)

Patullo did work with Frank Reich in Indianapolis.

Provided Patullo has been enlightened and has been very much influenced by Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, this may be a smart move.

Patullo would have to first fully prove to Joe he has exorcised any memory of ever working with Gailey.

Interestingly enough, Patullo graduated from South Florida.

Everyone here just wants a name offensive coordinator. Hey y’all why we’re bob and Todd monken in college? Because they got fired from the nfl. I’m just saying y’all poopoo anyname that comes up but I’m fine with any of these guys being given a shot. Circumstance and situation matter at specific times. How was monkens offense in Cleveland Joe? Why’d he leave there if he’s such a savant?

  2. Rita Moreno, Football Analyst Says:

Rita thinks Joe blames QB coaches for QBs who just aren’t very good. How does Joe know that a guy wouldn’t have been even worse without a particular coach?

Rita finds this all very interesting.

Rita thinks Joe should give these coaching candidates a chance before dropping turds on their heads. I mean, unless the coach is named Lovie Smith, in which case Rita says drop that deuce.

Rita thinks Jason Licht and Todd Bowles know more about coaches than Joe and the other commenters on this board. RIta will wait and see and give any coach hired the benefit of the doubt to see what they can do.

Rita is too old to b!tch and moan about things she can’t do anything about. Rita has other concerns.

  3. RCK Says:

I would take this hire over any of the others already mentioned. I much prefer a younger, up-and-comer over some of these other dated NFL establishment types. The Bucs desperately need to modernize their approach to the game.

  4. Infomeplease Says:

IMO, Fire Bowles first!!!!! Hire a real head coach!! Let him help hire other coaches including a special teams coach!!

  5. SB~LV Says:

If they ( The G’Boyz) think that they can go with Todd Bowles as head coach they will see the biggest fan rejection they can not even imagine.

Rita doesn’t understand why people spend time expecting something that clearly isn’t happening. Rita is old and has wisdom. Rita thinks you should direct your energy towards more productive thoughts. Rita knows.

Rita has found, in her many years of experience, that fighting what you can’t change only causes you misery. Rita recommends you get over your b!tching and moaning.

  9. Hodad Says:

If you’re going to take from the Eagles go with 35 yr old Brian Johnson QB coach. He’s done a great job with Hurts, and oh by the way, he was Trask’s QB coach at fl, and his OC his senior season. Wouldn’t he make more sense?

  10. Tye Says:

Yep!… Its becoming more apparent that the OC will be as much of a project as the next QB!

  11. Rita Moreno, Football Analyst Says:

Rita thinks the negativity is very interesting, if not concerning. Rita thinks you complainers could be much happier if you had a more open mind. Rita is here for you.

A ground and pound head coach sniffing around a potential ground and pound OC? I’m shocked! Shocked I say!

Bowles is bound and determined to force his outdated, ultra conservative philosophy on the team, so we will probably get that guy.

  14. Nicholas Carlson Says:

The Joes often (rightly) say they don’t want Bowles anywhere near a developing QB. Why would you want him near the OC hiring process? What in his past gives you confidence that he can do that well? Fifth time is the charm?

Rita says that the evidence only shows that Bowles wants to run the ball better and more often. Rita has noticed a lot of analysts agree with that assessment. Rita has not heard Todd say he wants a ground and pound offense.

Rita has noticed that there are creative ways to mix the run and pass. Rita thinks Todd would be happy with that.

Rita finds the complaining very interesting.

  16. SKBucsFan Says:

I don’t know the guy from Adam. But it seems like poaching a coach from a top team in a season is the trendy thing to do. And Licht doesn’t have too many original thoughts…just see the last 3 coaches he has hired.

But I agree, learning under Chan Gailey is bad for any resume.

    Rita does not know Pablo.

Rita is neither an optimist nor a pessimist. Rita gives Todd a chance because Rita values her mental health. Rita is not closed minded. Rita does not pretend to know more than the head coach and GM. Rita does not spend emotional energy worrying about things she cannot change. Rita enjoys watching the process play out.

  18. SlyPirate Says:

WHY WOULD YOU WANT THIS JOB?

The Bucs will be bottom dwellers for the next three years. No credible OC talent would want that on their resume?

  19. Allbuccedup Says:

Rita the only way they would fire Bowles now if Brady told Licht I will sign a two deal if you fire Bowles and hire Sean Payton. Then Licht would fire Bowles and give the Saints our next two first round draft picks.

Rita thinks that would be crazy. Rita thinks giving away 2 first round picks on a team with a serious cap problem and a need to increase young talent is totally illogical. Rita has also heard that the price for Payton is ONE mid-first round pick. Rita does not advocate stupidly going “all-in” for the fantasy of another Superbowl run next year. Rita does not think that’s a reasonable expectation. Too many holes to be filled and not enough cap.

Rita finds this all very interesting.

  21. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Just imagine if we had John Lynch as our GM instead of Licht ?? Yes he help win a Super Bowl and luring TB12, but what about the other years and why does he get a free pass and I think they need to be like the Titans with Robinson and let Licht go as well !!!!! We wouldn’t have had a running issue if they wouldn’t have run RoJo out of the building and put their trust in Lenny.. RoJo and White would have been a big upgrade

  22. Redeemer Says:

Nobody is coming here for a lateral move. The job just isn’t that attractive without a QB. A QB coach looking for an OC job makes sense. They could always dip into the collage ranks. Stop with the fire Bowles nonsense. It’s not happening. Much as I think they should have.

He said he didn’t use the up tempo offense because it didn’t give the defense time to rest and get their naps. So one can rightfully assume he would prefer the clock never stop for an incomplete pass.

Rita does not think this means ground and pound. Plenty of teams run the ball more and do so effectively, namely San Francisco. Rita also has heard Todd say you do what you need to do to win, and if that means throwing the ball, then you throw the ball. Rita thinks Todd has been misinterpreted. Rita knows that running the ball more effectively was a goal for 2022 even before Arians stepped down. Rita has no problem with a greater commitment to running, if it’s effective.

Rita also knows that all NFL coaches know that time of possession advantage is often a key metric for winning. Running is a good way to do it, if you’re good at it. Get good at it, so say Rita.

Rita did not ever hear Todd say he did not want an explosive passing game. Rita only read that Todd didn’t want to go no-huddle and/or hurry up for most of the game. Rita knows that he shares that philosophy with most coaches in the league. Rita can see that fans here on JBF have exaggerated negative interpretations of Bowles’ comments. Rita can see all the suffering this has caused. Rita cares.

    @Redeemer
Back in 2011, brady ran a no huddle offense pretty much every drive for the whole game. He threw 5000+ yards with guys like danny woodhead and deion branch. I think the oc was bill obrien. He carried that team to the superbowl with the 32nd ranked defense. Peyton manning also was more up tempo when running the offense. When your oline sucks, you can pretty much blitz the dlineman with the no huddle so they can’t catch their breath and theyre huffing and puffing for air. Im not saying they run it the whole game but they shouldve used it more. Put some of the young kids like Deven Thompkins and scotty in the rotation and just go fast.

Rita thinks a young OC may see it as an opportunity to make a name. Rita thinks a good candidate may view the team as one good offensive coordinator away from being a pretty decent team.
