Inside Intel From Todd Bowles’ Interviews With Offensive Coordinator Candidates

January 25th, 2023

Is Tom Brady really gone?

Very interesting info from inside Bucs coach Todd Bowles’ office.

A lot of folks throughout #NFLMedia and beyond believe that Tom Brady is history in Tampa Bay.

The Bucs don’t feel that way. Recently word from One Buc Palace was that the Bucs still considered themselves in the running to retain Brady. Here’s why:

Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, during Bowles’ interviews with offensive coordinator candidates, the interviewees are asked how they would build and craft an offense with Brady at quarterback.

If Brady had already told the Bucs he’s outta here, why would the Bucs (Bowles?) waste time asking guys to construct an offense around Brady?

Joe finds all of this very interesting. Joe can hear and see Garafolo’s Bucs information in the NFL Network video below.

  1. Defense Rules Says:

Dear Bucs … PLEASE move on. You’re not winning the Super Bowl this year and Tom Brady is not the future. Fix as many problems as you can in 2023 so we can be competitive in the future.

  3. Davenport Says:

Keeping Brady serves no purpose other than to prolong the inevitable re-build and continue the never-ending distraction he has become.

Huge TB fan, but it’s over

  4. NEfan Says:

Kirk Kubiak & Billy Jo Bob, don’t think so! Brady goes to the second losingest franchise and delivers a SB. Why not go to the worst franchise of all time the Lions, in a dome and do the same? They are ripe. Shat all he has to do is get them past the first round and they will build a statue of him in the middle of Gord Stadium.

  5. Rita Moreno, Football Analyst Says:

Rita finds this very interesting, even though Rita believes Tom should retire.

Rita is also concerned the team may be putting too much hope in an all-in Superbowl run with Brady. Rita is open minded, but does not think this is a rational approach. Rita believe it’s potentially disastrous. Rita hopes this team moves into the future with developing good young players and intelligent cap management. Rita is a realist and a pragmatist. Rita looks forward to the future instead of trying to squeeze blood from stones.

  6. Jerseybuc Says:

Man I hope they don’t hire 1 of these guys. Come on man !! Reach out to kingsberry, reich, I would look at mccardell also. If it is Brady kliff or frank. Them otherv3-4 clowns no fricken way bad enough coach radio is still here

  7. Hodad Says:

Oh Rita, do you feel pretty, oh so pretty? Loved you in that movie. The Glazers aren’t ttrying to sqeeze blood from a stone with all in for Brady. They’re trying to sqeeze more cash from fans. They know he’s shot.

  8. Greg Valenzuela Says:

Please just move on Bucs! I’m a life long and die hard fan, last year showed us enough and we just need to try something new at QB. Tom Brady will put us in the news but it will do nothing for us on Sundays. We have a lot of holes and those wont be covered up with bringing Brady back!

  9. patrickbucs Says:

He’s not going to the Lions, they are tagging or extending Goff for sure.

  10. Bucs56 Says:

Tb12 only comes back if miami doesn’t work òut and he doesn’t want to sit around his miami house all across from Giselle house

  11. SB~LV Says:

TB ain’t playing football next year, he has close friends advising him to retire
46 years old playing in the NFL

  12. big_buc$ Says:

Why can’t the Bucs interview QB coaches from the Rams, 49ers, Dolphins, Bengals, and Packers? Those offensive schemes are more modern and have creativity scheming players open. I honestly think you can’t depend on Brady at 46. Defense will clearly not be a top unit as it once was with so many pending FAs. Brady for one will not entertain a team without a top defense or middle of the pack along with weapons on offense. I say once again need a total youth movement and get young across the board.

  13. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Good grief, I hope this is just smoke. Why would they ask that question? Because the staff doesn’t understand how to look forward, we’ll pick the perfect coordinator and offense for last season, and never think about next season. In 9 months we’ll be Dallas ready

  14. SKBucsFan Says:

As long as they aren’t interviewing Gary Kubiak. Seems he would be more like Lichts preference.

  15. Bradyfan Says:

Man Todd is delusional. It’s sad to see.

  16. Beej Says:

I don’t see any quarterback we could acquire that is better than Brady. Of Brady retires, that’s fine. The only thing that really screws us is if he goes to play for someone else

  17. Rita Moreno, Football Analyst Says:

Rita thinks Brady isn’t coming back to the Bucs and planning for it is delusional. Rita says reset, reload, and if Brady wants to return and they haven’t found someone better for the future, okay — have him back. He doesn’t get to call the shots for the future of the franchise, so say Rita. Rita cares.

  18. SB~LV Says:

    Rita cares too much
Bowles is inept in a leadership role

  19. Conte Piscatelli Says:

They should hand the candidates a piece of paper that says Kyle Trask, Jacoby Brissett, Baker Mayfield, Carson Wentz. Then asked them to pick one and describe how the offense would maximize their ability. The guy who doesn’t put the pencil down and leave the room is your new coach. Better yet, if one circles a name and says they give us the best chance at picking #1 next year.

  20. TAMPA BAY DEMON™ Says:

    Bradyfan Says:
“Man Todd is delusional. It’s sad to see.”
    ____________

Tom will be playing here next year.
    Mark it down.

  21. Allbuccedup Says:

I told you so Rita in another article I to would like us to move on to build for a future but it appears Brady is calling the shots, I personally don’t think he will return with Bowles in charge unless no one is interested in him but the Bucs. But with these offensive coordinators they are interviewing I hope he just retires.

  22. Jack Clark Says:

Hopefully they’re asking how the OC would build a game plan around every quarterback in the NFL—not just Brady— because we need an OC that can adapt and bring the best out of all our players, regardless of who they are. Bowels also needs to ask them how they make game time adjustments and what type of offense is best suited for our current personnel—quarterback not included

  23. sasquatch Says:

I agree with Rita — this team needs to move on and pick an offensive coordinator known for creativity in the passing game AND the running game who can get the most out of the offense regardless of whether Brady wants to come back. It sounds like the Bucs still really want him, but you gotta cover all the bases in case he doesn’t. Hopefully, the Brady question is not the major focus of the interviews.

  24. Tye Says:

WHY would Brady want to play for a nobody OC?

  25. sasquatch Says:

    Tye Says:

WHY would Brady want to play for a nobody OC?

Every coach was a nobody at some point. Brady is smart enough to talk with a guy and get a feel for them. If they have a good rapport and similar philosophy, I see no reason why Brady would not consider working with a younger OC. Leftwich had only one full year as OC when Brady signed with TB.

  26. TDTB Says:

Why would a young and talented OC want to be here? If he does a good job he prolongs Bowles eventual dismissal. If he doesn’t he’s one and done. TB12 as OC fixes some of the salary cap and puts the team on track to clean house after next season. Also gives a year for Trask to sit in the second chair.

  27. Rita Moreno, Football Analyst Says:

    TDTB Says:
    January 25th, 2023 at 4:56 pm

Why would a young and talented OC want to be here? If he does a good job he prolongs Bowles eventual dismissal.

Rita thinks the answer is right there. Rita thinks logically — if the OC does a good job and prolongs Bowles’ eventual dismissal, he’s done a good job. Every coach is eventually dismissed, so say Rita. So, the longer the OC delays the dismissal implies he’s doing a good job and the team is winning. Rita thinks that coaches don’t have the same negative loser mentality as commenters on this board. Rita thinks an OC candidate can count — there are only 32 such jobs in the league. Rita thinks someone good will want the job, and can only hope Todd hires him. Rita cares.

  28. DungyDance Says:

Joe – the confidence polls for Bowles have been tired for a while now. 90% consistently have little to no confidence. Same thing week after week. On the other hand, the topic here is intriguing. Set up a poll to see what JBF’rs think about whether the team should do whatever it takes to keep the goat, or cut bait and move on.

  29. Weston Says:

Lets give it one more shot! We will NEVER have a shot at having the GOAT again. Definitely not looking into tearing down the roster over the next 3 years, and you know Bowles is gonna “reload not rebuild” next season. You think he’s gonna be comfortable being the captain of a tanking ship? No. This rebuild isnt starting next year no matter what.

  30. D-Rok Says:

Geez you guys, read the room.

This isn’t a confirmation Brady is coming back. It’s a technique called compare and contrast: “What would you do if Brady is here?” vs. “What would you do if Brady wasn’t here?”

It’s an interviewing technique, one which I’ve used in management. Obviously, without Brady in my tag line. Obviously.

  31. BucsfanFred Says:

    Brady is our best option.
Trask doesn’t look like a good bet, but he hasn’t had much chance. Some of these free agents either stink or will cost us draft picks we need desperately to build back a team.
Licht, ok buddy, you need a killer draft and you need last couple years picks to develop like, NOW.
Let’s not collapse for Caleb unless we’re real close to getting him anyway.
Who was Rita Moreno? I know Hanoi Jane from infamy. I know Tomlin from Laugh In. Sally field from lots of stuff, but not Rita. Guess I’ll look it up

  34. sasquatch Says:

  35. Allbuccedup Says:

Rita finds this very interesting. Rita does not condone predicating the offense on Brady’s possible return or in having Brady design the offense for a 1 year spin. Rita says this is craziness and no one wants this. Not Brady, not the OC candidate, not Bowles, not Licht… so say Rita.

    Rita now wants a ‘rita.

  38. SufferingSince76 Says:

Rita, how about using the first person pronoun like normal people? Third person is creepy and is too similar to the Howard Cosell posts.

  39. D-Rok Says:

Great. Now I have to put down my beer and run to the store and get supplies to make Margaritas. Mrs. D-Rok saw my post before I could turn off the monitor and is insisting on a great evening.

Thanks, Rita Morena. Even tho you won 2 Emmy’s for your role in The Muppet Show, you just cost me some scratch running to the ABC store.

Oh well – season’s over anyway, might as well imbibe.

Rita. A good and talented OC won’t come here. A QB coach? A WR coach? Promoted with the hope that he will be able to be a good OC? That is what we will get. Wake up folks. NO GOOD AND TALENTED OC will come here, unless they are cut loose elsewhere and there are no other job openings with a new and talented potential HC.\

  46. mark2001 Says:

Regarding the Bucs planning for Brady’s return? Sure…why not. It is like your financially independent wife walking out on you after a terrible last year. And you not cancelling the tickets for your vacation next summer. Hope springs eternal.

Rita. A good and talented OC won’t come here.

Rita says this is your expectation, not fact. Rita knows how to count — there are 32 such jobs in the league, they don’t grow on trees. Rita thinks someone good will want the job. Coaches aren’t whining losers like many commenters, so say Rita.

Now, if you’re saying that it will be difficult to attract an established coordinator to come into this situation, Rita might agree. Rita is not unrealistic. Rita is a realist and a pragmatist, but also open minded.

Rita also does not choose to spend an entire offseason being negative about changes. Rita thinks that’s no way to spend her time.

  48. Allbuccedup Says:

  53. mark2001 Says:

Rita…Good OC’s, and there aren’t 32 of them, won’t come to play under Bowles. One year, weak running game, pores OL, Weak D, no quality QB in the fold. Teaching a new Offensive system. They would be a fool to do so…. almost as foolish as the fans that think they would jeopardize their careers and futures to take a fly on it here under the NY Jet’s and Tampa failed/underachieving coach Bowles. Where it is also likely Bowles and Licht may not be here after this coming season.

  54. mark2001 Says:

Rita…btw… you can choose to spend your time dealing with reality or living in a fantasy world. It is your prerogative to choose the later. But you better buckle up for the reality you are about to receive.

  55. Rita Moreno, Football Analyst Says:

Rita sees that Klint Kubiak interviewed today.

Kubiak comes from the Shanahan tree, so Rita has read. Rita thinks a robust running game in the mold of the 49ers to open up the passing game further, including motion and play-action, is just what the doctor ordered.

Rita also noted that Broncos scoring increased by 10 PPG once he took over play-calling from Nathaniel Hackett. Rita finds this very interesting.

Rita also notes the Vikings offense was not bad at all in the one year he was coordinator in Minnesota.

Rita thinks all is not lost if we don’t get a more “established” coordinator.

Oh Mark, Rita thinks someone hurt you. Rita is so sorry.

Rita knows reality is only here and now without projections from the past into the future. All negative projections into the future are the actual fantasies… Unpleasant fantasies, to be sure… so say Rita… Thus, all the b!tching and moaning about despair over the guys they’re interviewing are just negative fantasies. Staying present and remaining open minded is the actual reality. So say Rita. Rita knows. Rita is experienced. Free your mind.

    Rita is love.

  57. mark2001 Says:

Rita…. I said no established OC. And he isn’t. I didn’t say that a long shot might not hit. It does sometimes. But there is a big difference between being an assistant and an OC. Just like there is a huge difference between being a DC and a HC. So we don’t know Bowles can make it as a HC or that an Assistant, Kubiak or whomever, will make it as an OC. Alot of if’s and few answers. Maybe you are a youngster. I remember the first dozen times I felt the way you do about a Bucs hire. But after the dozen failures at that strategy, it isn’t enough to raise ones hopes and enthusiasm.

  58. mark2001 Says:

If one steps away from the smoke, and clears ones head, they can often see reality much better. Freeing your mind… Are you experienced, purple haze?

  59. Rita Moreno, Football Analyst Says:

    Rita is love.

Holding onto negative expectations, year after year, only causes pain.

Letting go of negative expectations does not mean rosy positive expectations. It is neutral and open minded. Rita does not know, and truthfully, no one really knows. Rita says remaining open minded is the key to mental health and surviving the offseason.

    Rita knows. Rita is experienced.

Negativity is smoke. Positivity is smoke. Neutral and open minded gives you access to reality. Choose your smoke later, so say Rita.

  60. Redeemer Says:

If you want to craft an offense around Brady, go hire one of McDaniels assistants. They took the old Ron Earhart, Tom Perkins offense and made it into a machine. With the skill position players they still have, it could be tremendously successful. Brady is the master of that system, which he helped to create. When Manning went to Denver, his offense came with him. I see no reason, with a full camp why it couldn’t work.

This is the Bowles transition year. He has dumped a bunch of coaches and I am pretty sure defense is on his mind with every thought of the draft.

I do not think a quality OC will be interviewing and I don’t think Brady will be back.

The offense will be an afterthought, again, so who he picks doesn’t mean much. As long as his run plays involve the O-line, I will be as happy as I can be.

I hope Trask is up to it.

  66. Jrw bucs Says:

Why wouldn’t you want Brady back if you Trask is the answer you are mistaken. Also Kingsbury system is not made for the NFL. Kubiak runs something real similar to Shannon system which runs the ball

At last a fellower traveler! I’ve spent years here trying to slow the roll of the chicken littles, but sadly the sky is always falling for them.

I’ve even tried logic. If you expect the best and it shows up you haven’t wasted all that time expecting the worst. If you expect the worst and it happens it would whether you were positive or not. I remained positive until Brady threw the int in the end zone. I literally turned off the TV at that point. Like Rita I’m also a pragmatist.

I can definitely see how next year could still work out for the Bucs. Like you I am optimistic. The right pieces could still easily fall into place.

Jared Goff took the Lions to a winning record! Baker Mayfield played well enough for the Rams but the reason I like him is because he took a franchise even sorrier than the Bucs, the Cleveland Brownies to the playoffs and won the first round game against their hated rivals the Steelers. This is akin to him coming here and leading the Bucs to a playoff game against the Saints and winning. Most of all thouogh I’m prejudiced by my son, who lives in Ohio and is a huge Brownies fan and claims Baker is a decent QB.

@NEFan Rita is NOT Rod Munch! bwaahaaaahaa. I can see why she was offended.

It all comes down to Health, Picks, and Free agents in the off season.

I would not say a SB is impossible…anything can happen. What hurt us this year were injuries primarily. Brady would have been much better if the OL had not suffered sch devastating injuries. DL was hit hard too.

It starts in the trenches, and our trenches were damaged all year.

So, assuming our starters come back healthy, and stay that way, Brady might just be able to do what it takes.

Or…maybe Trask. Or maybe Carr. Or maybe whoever other than Gabby.

So a couple good FAs and 2-3 hits in the draft, and we should be okay.

Gifted the job after single handedly blowing the greatest comeback in team history. He should have been fired for that atrocity, not promoted. What a shat show.

That question they are asking them really is pretty informative. I’d love to know what kind of answers they got too.

They should have asked Byron Leftwich this question in Week 2.

Correct. They could instantly be relevant again. I hate to say it though, but I dont think Evans can run that system. It requires the QB and receivers to read a defense the same. ME13 is not that guy, but Godwin is.
The team does not really want Brady back because Bowels doesn’t want him back. Brady’s game doesn’t match with Toads grind and whine style. I wanted him to stay because I have come to really like a lot of the Bucs players, but everyone on these boards seems to want to go into losing mode for a decade. Also, with Bowels, I think winning is off the table anyway. So, I think the people should get what they want… 10 more years of losing… So I want TB12 to go… Where, I dont care. Home to live in peace, the broadcast booth with Gronk, LV, Miami, Charlotte, NO, Houston, Nashville, Baltimore, NE, literally anywhere but here. That will keep me from having to listen to the whining drivel on here.

Am I the only one who thinks we should take a swing at untested qbs for next year in the hopes it works?!?!? It may not work, but next year looks like a wasted year anyway. Sign Mike White or Tyler Huntley and see if they work out w more work, if not, same position we’re in now

Finacially alone, isn’t Brady the best option for next season? I thought his dead money (retiring or another team) would be a bigger hit than if he played?

Also, I know we are in unchartered waters with him at 46, but history has shown a challenged GOAT is one that typically rises and wins! What a way to go out if that played out… taking the team (your 2nd team) to a SB in year #1 and then following up an 8-9 crapfest when everyone counted you out and you win SB #2 for Tampa and #8 individually…. The End.
