Todd Bowles Reviews Logan Hall And Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

December 22nd, 2022

Where are young defenders?

The Bucs defense has been playing decent lately. Especially when you factor all the injuries and a pair of young players on the front-seven who have been MIA.

Rookie Logan Hall (who?), Joe cannot remember the last time the defensive lineman made a play. Joe gets it: Rookie defensive linemen rarely have major impacts. But dang, Joe swears Hall was getting production earlier in the year.

The last month? Well, have you checked your milk carton for Hall? The Houston product has two tackles since the Bucs lost to the Crows on Thursday Night Football back in October.

And Hall’s snap counts have plummeted.

“He had to learn the run game,” Bowles said of Hall yesterday. Hall was “taking on double-teams and playing a different type of technique when he was at Houston, [so it] took him a minute, but he’s coming around the second half of the season.”

Joe isn’t sure what Bowles meant by that because Hall has been a total non-factor the past six games, unless you call a half-sack a factor.

“We trust him more inside playing the run and the pass,” Bowles said. “Learning the pass-rush schemes are difficult because we have [different] schemes every week.

“But he has a pass-rush skill and he’s becoming a full three-down player. His development in the second part of the season, we’re very pleased with.”

Again, Hall was a factor early in the season. Against the Dixie Chicks he had two tackles for loss, three solo tackles and a sack. After recording two tackles against Baltimore, Hall has been mostly AWOL.

If anything, Hall seems to be regressing, not progressing. And if Hall is progressing like Bowles claims, why have his snaps been slashed?

Bowles was also asked about a guy who seems not to be developing, and that’s outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. Sure, every other game JTS will make a play, and that’s it for the game. Too often, JTS gets smoked on the run.

“Joe has a lot of athleticism – everybody knows that – but he has to learn the game,” Bowles said of JTS. “He’s learning it week by week, he’s learning it.

“He knows it, he’s smart enough to know it, he’s just got to put his tools together consistently to become a better pass rusher. He knows that.”

JTS has get-off and speed. You cannot teach that. A player either has it or doesn’t have it. JTS does. Hopefully he can build on it.

Man, as bad as the offense has been, more and more Joe is impressed with how Bowles has coached up the defense.

How many defenses could keep a team in a game after losing their top pass rusher and with corners and safeties beat to hell? Not many.

Now it’s time for a pair of highly-drafted youngsters on the front-seven to get off their tails and prove their worth and help the Bucs make the playoffs.

Not impressed with Bowles or Bowles assessment of players…….these two guys aren’t producing like our 3rd, 4th & 6th rounders.

  2. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

This Bowles Leftwich circle jerk shet show has been a tough watch. Sigh…..

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

JTS is trash and another DE high draft pick bust.

Logan Hall hasn’t done much at all….but that maybe due to bad coaching.

  4. Ed Says:

JTS “get off speed” doesn’t help. He is too upright and can’t get low enough to make his turn inside or outside the tackle. His body type isn’t strong enough in his hips and thighs to beat straight blocking.

The dude needs to get a better trainer to teach him how to keep up his speed and balance when taking on a blocker. Watch film of Von Miller and Michah Parsons, Joe, watch them bend and dig in their feet to get leverage to get around that tackle. Unless he turns his speed into an asset he isn’t an NFL edge rusher.

  5. CChead Says:

    JTS is NFG

  6. Deeez NATZ Says:

This guy is clueless. Like I said 2 games ago the bucs won’t win another game this year and the Panthers will win this division.

  7. ModHairKen Says:

Great pass rushers see the QB and nothing else and get to him. Average pass rushers see the OL first and engage to get to the QB. Tryon right now is too worried about the blockers.

  8. Beej Says:

I was surprised, JTS is actually in the top 50% of edge rushers with 200 snaps in pass rush wins and pressures

  9. Allbuccedup Says:

Its sad Bowles Lefty this year and probably next. If we do not make the playoffs its time to clean house.

  10. SB~LV Says:

    Bye bye

  11. PSL Bob Says:

I swear, until you mentioned Hall, I had forgotten he was on the team. Licht is usually pretty good at evaluating talent, but on this one he either whiffed or he hasn’t been coached up properly. Considering the same positional coaches, as well as the DC, from last year are still with the Bucs, I have to assume that Licht whiffed. That’s surprising for the first player taken by the Bucs in this year’s draft.

  12. ChrisBuc23 Says:

So far they haven’t been the answer. We need some dawgs up front. We need to see them making more progress.

  13. Buc4evr Says:

Geez, what pile of excrement. Hall is a total no factor at this point and JTS should have been a 7th round draft pick. I have been saying for two seasons that JTS is not a player that can rush the passer effectively and can’t hold the edge. Sure he runs around a lot, but is mostly ineffective.

  14. Beej Says:

Hm. JTS has pff of 66, about average for a second-year I’d guess

  15. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

PSL Bob – where you been Bro? The second player taken was Luke Goedeke-who has been abysmal. Not to mention Licht passed on All Sec LG Ed Ingram of LSU when he took Goedeke. The last time I looked Ed Ingram was having a damn good year playing LG for the Vikes. Please do not forget about Jason Lichts’ weird aversion to bringing in JC Tretter to replace Jensen-Licht has been a train wreck other than signing TB 12.

  16. HC Grover Says:

Hopefully Plan 9 can build on it someplace else.

  17. Bucamania Says:

Learning the game? Great first round pick. JTS trys to run around the tackle on every play. Always a step away.

  18. beano Says:

“Joe has a lot of athleticism but he has to learn the game.”

That also applies to Anthony Richardson and all the other “athletic” running backs trying to play quarterback. Look at the list of the Super Bowl winning quarterbacks since 2000, I don’t see a whole lot of “athletic” quarterbacks there lol:

    Trent Dilfer
    Tom Brady
    Brad Johnson
    Tom Brady
    Tom Brady
    Ben Roethlisberger
    Peyton Manning
    Eli Manning
    Ben Roethlisberger
    Drew Brees
    Aaron Rogers
    Eli Manning
    Joe Flacco
    Russell Wilson
    Tom Brady
    Peyton Manning
    Tom Brady
    Nick Foles
    Tom Brady
    Patrick Mahomes
    Tom Brady
    Matthew Stafford

  20. Couch Fan Says:

Everything starts with coaching. Its hard to stand out when you have coaches who have no clue how to put you in the best position to succeed.

  21. D-Rok Says:

Most of us fans can review for ourselves the play on the field; it’s mostly common sense: Is the player playing well, or not?

The only review this fan is interested in is the review for Todd Bowles, and Leftwich.

  22. Armybucsfan Says:

Hey joe. We all now that Todd and Byron both suck as coaches but what about players like Julio jones that hasn’t done jack this whole season cause he can’t seem to stay healthy. Where does the blame lie on that. Not to mention the cap he’ll we will be in for years to come because of boneheaded decisions like that one.

  23. Noles Says:

    Makes sense

Draft a guy then have him learn new technique like going from a 2 to a 3 technique. LOL u can’t truly evaluate them based on college if you change that..

I get it sometimes it works but it feels like JL tries to get too cute and overthink some draft picks

  24. dmatt Says:

So JTS has to be coached n trained on how to catch a soft under hand pass for an easy int n possibly td but he decided to swat, bat, or decline the catch. No one’s taking about that play. Who does that? Even a 12 yr old pop Werner kid would’ve known to catch the darn pass. JTS is a bust that’s just all to it.

  25. Winny Testaverde Says:

These two form the worst/most fraudulent boy band since Milli Vanilli. This is what “later” draft picks look like in The Licht Era.

The more Bowles says, the less we trust him. He jumped the shark/shart vs The Rams last year in the playoffs and has been in a literal free fall since. How The Bucs are in first remains a modern miracle. It helps that the competition are all 5-9 I suppose.

  26. Tim Says:

We’ve never had a head coach I’ve had less interest in hearing quotes from. I don’t understand how this guy ascended to the highest ranks of NFL coaching and can’t provide any substantive or insightful comments regarding this sport. Everything is cliches or boilerplate non-responses.

  27. ClwJB Says:

JTS at least has the raw skill set and needs more time

Hall is a very small DT and likely won’t develop in this system outside of being a Will G type

  28. Nick2 Says:

Joe we were just annihilated by the 49ers offense with a rookie quarterback and then heroically failed to bail out a bumbling offense in the 2nd half by letting Joe Burrow throw 4 touchdown passes. Hiw is our defense playing decent lately. Our offense has been awful but good defenses don’t allow 30 points in a half turnovers or no turnovers. Bowles leadership is a train wreck and the players are just following their leader in ineptitude. Bring in a proven winning coach again like BA or Gruden not another proven loaer like Bowles.

  29. Nick2 Says:

Vinny Testaverde your exactly right! We can factually point to Bowles dreadful last second blitz collapse to the Rams on 2021 (poorly communicated by Bowles against one iof the best blitz pickup QBs in the NFL Stafford. )Now he’s taken our nearly Superbowl team and somehow taken away all of their confidence and swagger with his ultra conservative style playing “not to lose” Most negatively impacting coach in the NFL bar none. He’s costing us dearly the Glazers must stop the bleeding before we lose tgw just 3.

  30. Ed Says:

The Bucs will never hire Gruden. Gruden made inappropriate remarks about ownership that leaked to the public. He has burned his bridges with the Glazer family.

  31. BigMacAttack Says:

One thing is apparent to me about this coaching staff. Every single one of them is full of $#!+.

  32. steele Says:

Agree with Ed. JTS has a quick first step…and that’s all. Lacks technique, poor bend, etc. etc. Driven out of most plays easily, sometimes 10, 20 yards, then runs back in after it’s over.

Both he and Hall were reaches and just raw developmentals, touted as instant impact starters when clearly they belong on practice squad.

Neither of them should be starting, especially on a team that was supposed to be a final all-in roster for Tom Brady. Of course, that was our misperception: this really is a bottom of the cupboard multi-year phase out rebuild. Brady was stupid to come out of retirement for it.

  33. 941Boltsfan Says:

As far as Hall falling off it’s more of the rookie you get on tape, less effective which is why the growth is crucial as he drops off. We may not see it but, the coaching staff knows (hopefully) where he can improve and learn new techniques to add to his arsenal.
