Todd Bowles Responds To Bruce Arians’ Claim Bucs Have More Talent Than Super Bowl Year

September 1st, 2022

Deeper?

Joe thought Super Bowl-winning Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians may have had a cocktail or two in him when he recently claimed Todd Bowles is now leading a roster better than the team Arians coached in the Super Bowl two years ago.

Joe thought that was Arians hanging Bowles out to dry. First, talk about a high bar to reach. Second, Joe thinks it is crazy to suggest this year’s team is better than 2020 (but Joe sure hopes Arians is on point).

The Bucs are down two Hall of Famers on offense — well one for sure and one would have been — with foot-rubbing tight end Rob Gronkowski and mental patient Antonio Brown. The Bucs are also down two Pro Bowlers on the offensive line in Ali Marpet and Ryan Jensen.

Just on offense alone the Bucs are worse off.

Defensively, is Akiem Hicks as good as Ndamukong Suh was in 2020? Will Joe Tryon-Shoyinka be as good as Jason Pierre-Paul was in 2020?

So what did Bowles think of Arians’ assessment of his team? Well, Bowles didn’t exactly agree and did some tap dancing to avoid stepping on Arians’ toes.

“I think we have more depth,” Bowles said. “I think we have more depth at each position then when we won the Super Bowl.”

Even that seems a stretch. The Bucs have more depth on offensive line? Really?

Now on defense the Bucs are very likely deeper. Certainly at outside linebacker and on the line and at inside linebacker and yeah, in the defensive backfield. So Joe will buy that.

Joe just thinks Arians put needlessly crazy expectations on Bowles’ back.

And Todd Bowles thought The 2018 New York Jets that he was the head football coach was better the Super Bowl Winning 1969 Jets 😀❗️

  2. CleanHouse Says:

Gronk, Suh, JPP, Jenson, Marpet, Whitehead, RoJo, AB

Um nope, not even close, but it’s the front offices own doing now they will live with it.

  3. FrontFour Says:

What exactly does BA do for us now. Sounds like a lot of foot in mouth stuff.

  4. TDTB Says:

Better hope they win it all this season. Next year when Brady retires it will be a whole different team. WR, TE, OL will all be much thinner. Trask won’t have nearly the same talent surrounding him. Does anyone expect David, Hicks, or Neal to return on defense with the Goat gone? I’ve been on board with the one year player rentals for Brady up until this year when I think they’ve jeopardized the team’s future.

  5. The Buc'n Waterboy Says:

Momma always said “the deeper you are the better you are”. Although it’s hard to believe that JTS is going to be as good as JPP in 2020. Marpet and Jensen are the biggest losses right now. The o-line my biggest concern this year. I agree with you Joe…the secondary appears to be much deeper in talent this year than in 2020 or 2021.

  6. gotbbucs Says:

Arians is a ticking time bomb whenever a video camera and microphone are close by.

I know they’re trying to make the appearance of this fun laid back country club where guys can do what they want, come and go as they please, and say what they want to the press, but it is so dangerous when you have a live wire like Arians roaming around unchecked.
He has no idea what his job is anymore and nobodies had the balls to tell him what his limitations are now. He’s like Ace Rothstein in “Casino”, not really involved in day to day operations, but still sticking his nose in where it shouldn’t be and starting little fires here and there.
Arians will never be able to let go and he will never ever pass up a chance to stick his foot in his mouth if the opportunity shows itself. Every team he was with loved him and then couldn’t wait to see him leave the building. They were very naive if they thought he would just kind of fade into the shadows without an extremely hard push and not cause waves.

  7. TBChucky Says:

I’d say the depth is definitely better. Is the team better? I guess we’ll see.. I hope BA’s right..

  8. BucBoy Says:

    @August 1976 Buc,

Doug Williams had a quarterback rating of 66.2 in his 5 years with the Bucs. That’s not quarterback development; that sux.

Later, Williams won a Super Bowl with a loaded Redskins team.

  9. lambeau Says:

Agree with Gotbbucs–it’s time for Licht to give Bowles some breathing room.
Not to mention Leftwich–BA says he stands right behind the QB every practice.
A ref told BA he’s not the coach and penalized him–Licht finally got him to the press box for games, but Jesus, how can Byron do his job? No wonder TB left.

  10. Adrnagy Says:

    Two face arians …

  11. SufferingSince76 Says:

I’m feeling a little wind up my skirt.

  12. JA Says:

    “What’s that?
    Hawaiian noises?
Banging on those bongos like a chimpanzee …”

Why is it I get the feeling I’m in an appliance store listening to a bunch of jealous salesman complaining about B.A. getting money for nothing?

Whether he meant it or not, B.A.’s comment was a compliment to the player’s on this current team. But it will be spun and spun in an attempt to make it something it is not. And nothing good, of course.
He must hate Todd. He threw him under the bus.
How could he be so dumb?
    The 2020 team was better.
    And so on …

Kickoff in ten days, folks …

  13. Maniac Buc Says:

I was done with Bruce after the way he handled the AB situation and cost us a Super Bowl. Dude always puts his foot in his mouth.

  14. Bowles4President Says:

Joe and fellow Bucs fans, forgive me if this has been answered…

I went to look up Ariens’ interview from First Take on YouTube, and I saw that he had done a media circuit of interviews last week. Usually people only do the interview circuit if they are promoting something like a book, show, or raising awareness. Did he have anything to promote?

  15. Joe Says:

Did he have anything to promote?

Yes, he’s doing a health awareness campaign. Joe has mentioned that in his stories and on Ira’s pod.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This defense should be better simply because of the extra year’s experience with the younger players…….White, JTS, Davis, Dean, SMB, Winfield, Edwards

We will see vs Cowboys but I’m loving our D.

The offense has added Mason, Jones, Gage…..probably not as strong as 2020…..but adequate, for sure.

  17. August 1976 Buc Says:

    Bucboy…
DOUG WILLIAMS Tampa Bay QB, 1978 Draft

4th Player in NFL history to throw for 10,000 yards in his first 4 years

    Thats Development.

1 of only 4 ever at the time, in the history of the NFL at that time.

So no matter what some say, it is a historical fact what Doug did as a Buc QB

    GO BUCS!!!!

  18. Defense Rules Says:

It’s comical how some make so much out of so little. NFL football is ENTERTAINMENT; it’s really not war with one tribe trying to annihilate another. BA is part of that ENTERTAINMENT. For heaven’s sake, folks need to just chill & enjoy his personality for what it is (very ‘unique’ IMO).

Anyone who’s followed BA for any length of time can tell that the guy LOVES football. Him stepping down from the Bucs’ HC position was the ultimate sacrifice I’d be willing to bet, but he obviously has intense loyalty to those who’ve shown him intense loyalty over the years. Todd Bowles is a case in point, but so is Harold Goodwin & so is Keith Armstrong & any number of others. Having spent a career as a military pilot, I personally applaud that.

Old-time leaders like Bruce Arians & Tom Moore are invaluable. Yes because of their ‘accumulated knowledge & experiences’, but also because of their very ‘unique’ personalities. It wasn’t THAT long ago that most Americans didn’t even know that Tampa had an NFL team, much less that we had a very good one. Folks can give the Glazers & JL all the credit they want to, but without BA folks would still be saying ‘Tampa who?’

  19. August 1976 Buc Says:

BTW Bucboy have you ever watched a game live that Doug Williams played in as a Buc? Or are you just reading about Doug?

    GO BUCS!!!!

  20. August 1976 Buc Says:

Spot on DR… This Franchise is better for BA joining it, and Tom Moore for that matter.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  21. mark2001 Says:

Right on the money, D rules. If Arians had said something like, “this team better win the SB if Bowles plans to keep his job”, I could see all the shorts bunched up. But his comment? No big deal.

  22. Biff Barker Says:

100% pure BS coach speak by BA and Johnny Walker.

  23. HC Grover Says:

Can Johnson play guard or center?

  24. doolnutts Says:

I don’t think they are entirely wrong. If you look at the Super Bowl rsoter we didn’t know if many of our pieces would hit. Looking back on it they did but how do we know the pieces they have on today’s team wont hit? Exmaple on the OL in 2020 Wirfs was a rookie. We were all hopeful hed do great but what if he didn’t? We also had a healthy line but what if Jensen got hurt that year who would of played for him all season? Frankly we are in better position this year with the depth pieces. Hainey was able to come in and I think hell do fine. Our rookie LG whose to say he wont turn out just fine?

There are question marks and this team needs to go out and earn it but who says they wont? Licht has done great putting this team together so I am excited about the season It think we will surprise people.

  25. Geno711 Says:

    Thanks DR. Appreciate your thoughts.

  26. Listnfrmafar Says:

Geez, you all beat me to the BA bashing, not much left to say except, those like August that believe BA was an asset in the 2021 season wasn’t paying attention. He added drama to the whole AB/Edward’s vax card thing, his knee & covid stint, distractions, AB & Adam’s situations embarrassing to the team, if it wasn’t he wouldn’t of been fined and the Brady struggle for attention but the kicker was the total lack of preparation going into the Rams game was the straw, for Brady anyway. He either needs to go or Super Glue his lips together, he’s over the top.

  27. August 1976 Buc Says:

Yes List BA is an asset and has always been for whatever team he has been a part of since the 1980’s when he started Coaching at Temple.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  28. Steven007 Says:

Another nothing burger that will be forgotten by week 2. Carry on.

  29. Listnfrmafar Says:

August, what BA did in the past isn’t relevant in today’s game. Players today are about respect & money. One question, if your boss whacked you in front of your peers and family, would that be OK with you? Go ahead, make up some excuse why it’s OK to do it on NATIONAL TV.

  30. Steven007 Says:

List, hopefully his Boss also doesn’t pat him on the butt every time he does a good job. Perhaps multiple times a day. And I doubt he’s in an environment where he and all of his coworkers are screaming profanities during their work performance both in Glee and dismay. Kind of a different work environment. Not excusing a rap on a helmeted head. That must have hurt. His hand.

  31. Goatfarmer Says:

Other than AB, someone find me a player to have anything negative to say about BA. Find me a coach he used to work with that would agree with the stupid I mean negative narrative. I’ll wait.

Meanwhile, his record speaks for itself.

    And so does Todd’s.

    24-40

That’s not quite Dominician, but almost.

  32. D-Rok Says:

Thank you for your service, Defense Rules. I was a Medic in the Army, so I really understand your conveyance of loyalty, and trust. It’s funny how life turns out, as I was accepted into the Air Force Academy right out of high school, and wanted to be a pilot, but made a stupid decision, declined, and went to Army instead. One of the few decisions I strongly regret.

    What was your call sign?

GO USA military, and GO BUCS!!!

  33. mark2001 Says:

Nothing could be added or subtracted from the knucklehead but talented drama that was AB, that he carried on his back like a backpack on a daily basis. Once CG went down and he had more power, he used it like a club to try to take more control over the entire situation. BA wouldn’t have it, rightfully so. Sometimes standing up for principles costs you.

  34. David Says:

Other than o line they probably have more depth at every position, so I agree with that. Even O line is questionable because when they won the Super Bowl they had Stinnie as a back up and that was it. Maybe the coaches feel their back ups are better this time

  35. August 1976 Buc Says:

List you have already forgot that 2020 is actually a part of the current decade. BA is a big part of the shiny Lombardi trophy at 1 Buc Palace. You say many things like you were an actual player on the Bucs roster, but as far as we know, you have not ever been a player on the Bucs roster. You make so many statements like you were. And many statements you make are about TB12 are like you have actually have spoken to Tom, but really they are just your opinion, not actual facts but hersey. The fact is BA has helped the current Bucs team be a better team. Btw jjust how many players on the Bucs current roster are you in contact with on a daily basis? The way you talk, you must be, but I do not think you are in contact with anyone on the roster or anyone in the organization. So spout off all you want, but that does not make what you say actually be true.

Here is a real fact, BA HAS A WIINING RECORD WITH 3 NFL TEAMS, and the Bucs organozation has been better since BA was hired in January 2019.

The bottom about BA is he us a WINNER.

That is not opinion, that is the cold hard facts concerning BA

    GO BUCS

  36. Goatfarmer Says:

August – great points in this thread, whether putting ButtGirl in her place about Dougie or shredding the insane Arians narrative. People love to say things without evidence, and then when asked for,it, they make crap up based on conspiracies. Foolish toads.

  37. CrackWise Says:

Going into the 2020 season. Our O-Line was a huge concern. We had to rookies in Cappa and Wirfs. An inconsistent LT in Smith. Jenson was a walking Penalty machine. Ali was holding down the fort.

AB was a huge mystery and was not a certainty coming of missing a season plus and s 6 game suspension. Gronk was coming out of retirement. Godwin was not who he has become. Watson was our up-and-coming WR. We had to go into FA to find a reliable running back. Brady was having to learn a new system.

Do I even need to address the D?

BAs comment are just common sense. BUT who among us has that anymore?

You people, to think some of you actually do research to come up with such educated opinions. What a waste of time.

  38. CrackWise Says:

Does JPP and Sue even show up if Shaq wasn’t creating havoc opposite of them? Would have JPP been burned out if not for D White converting him in the run game. Would have Sue kept his head in it if not for Vita going down?

This year’s team is far and away better than 2020. Only someone trying to sell Drama would contrive such an article. But hey, why not, everyone else is doing it.

So, screw it, let’s sew decent into the fan base. I can’t wait to stop caring about what others think. Won’t be long now I’m certain of it.

  39. miken Says:

besides capa, no one really wanted any of our other free agents… that is telling.
Shu, adams, jpp… aqnd rojo barely made the roster. Then we swap t murph for julio. The o line is the only place we got worse

  40. Buc king Says:

We’re as good..wish we still had gronk tho

  41. Goatfarmer Says:

CrackWise makes some solid points and perspective. How did anyone feel after the Saints beat us up in the 2020 opener, with Armstrong’s short bus teams playing to inept form?

After losing back to back games against the Rams and Chiefs to sit at 7-5, how was everyone feeling? I know I was on the edge of the scotch tank ready to drown myself in it. Then the first half against the Falcons where the Byron Leftwich show managed 60 yards and zero points?

  42. Bowles4President Says:

    Thanks Joe!

  43. Listnfrmafar Says:

August, yes BA will be the first to tell you he was part of the shinny Lombardi trophy. I get my information same as you through media articles which many you clearly ignore. You have every right to jump on the BA wagon, who knows you may have a thing for bearded, old alcoholics. I also have the right to my opinion and that is without Brady his Tampa stint may of been the sewage that killed his slightly above average coaching career. DENIAL! Like I wrote before it’s OK just a defense mechanism for your years of depression.

  44. August 1976 Buc Says:

lol Sorry bud, I have been Enjoying the ride, because I CHOOSE too, of this team of millionaires playing a kids game. I started watching, and playing football because the Tampa Bay area got a team. I have no time to to be sipping sour lemon aide about BA or whatever. I have followed this team since the first preseason game in 1976 against the Rams in LA. That means a lot of crappy games over the years, and lol some winning. There is a big difference in denial and just being a sourpuss going on about negative stuff. I have stated more than once about BA, that he is not perfect, not by a long shot lol.
But he is the best Coach IMO that the team has had to date. He is a good Coach and a decent human being. And the fact is he has a lifetime winning record. And that was before Brady ever Qtr Backed for a team he coached.
Again I CHOOSE to enjoy the ride bro. Its not about denial. It is about choosing to enjoy the entertainment that Football is. Football is entertainment and a great one at that. So wether you like BA or not, whatever, but it does not change the good that BA has done for the Bucs franchise, regardless of his Shenanigans at times lol.
I choose to enjoy life, in spite of whatever crap life brings amongst the good also. I choose not be bummed out by a bunch of millionaires running around playing a kids game. Yes losing sux, but sorry there is a whole lot more to life than a game.
I live where some people still earn 1-2 dollars a day. Yes I said 1-2 dollars a day. So I get a reality check on a daily basis of how hard life can be for so many.
So this is not about denial bro, it is about enjoying life or choosing to be a sourpuss sipping on sour lemon aide about life and people.
I believe in going all out when you do something, like sports or whatever else you may endeavor to do, but I am long past letting things eat my lunch when things went wrong and mope around bummed out about it.
Been there and done that too many times in the younger days, but no way no more.
Go all out, and choose to enjoy, and choose not to be bummed out.
After all it is a personal choice.

Thank you Tony Robbins that was beautiful. I am a believer that overcoming adversity makes one stronger so I do not ignore life when not so good things land in your lap. Enjoy the unicorns, but BA’s days of a quality coach were over in 2019. Oh, to answer your question I did some Bucs 2019 games, not many because Brady didn’t get them on National TV yet. I guess BA wasn’t much of an allure for the major broadcasts. I also vaguely remembering I believe in 2017 the QB you all blame for your losing 2019 season came very close to beating the Patriots at HOME with Jamais as the QB. August, hate to break it to ya but we live in reality not a fairy tail. Though I will say ever since Brady came to Tampa Bucs fans have been living in one. GO BUCS!!!

  47. August 1976 Buc Says:

List you choose to live in a negative fantasy land. Alll baseless things you have said, without any first hand confirmstion. That is a real fantasy land. Choosing to live life in reality, and not get bogged down with crap is not unicorns, but an actual choice someones makes the live in the face of it all. For you, you have demonstrated by your words over the last year and a half to live in a negative fantasy world of hersey, with some facts mixed in. I do not deny reality, and just make up stuff that is negative. Again but to face life as it is honestly, and choose inspite of it to all not live a sour puss life. But if you like it that way, then so be it, have at it.
