Bucs Sign Veteran LB Genard Avery

August 24th, 2022

The Bucs have pounced.

The Steelers cut 27-year-old linebacker Genard Avery to get their roster down to the league-mandated 80 players, and general manager Jason Licht wasted little time signing him to the Tampa Bay roster, per longtime ESPN NFL insider and Eagles maven Adam Caplan.

Avery was a Browns fifth-round pick in 2018, then he bounced to the Eagles in 2019 and stayed with them through the 2021 season. Avery made 12 starts last year and registered a sack and a career-high 43 tackles.

Pittsburgh signed him to a one-year deal in March.

Avery has special teams experience but not a ton. He had one tackle against the Bucs in Round 1 of the playoffs back in January. Look for Avery to play a ton on Saturday night .

Play a ton on Saturday night

  2. Kody Says:

Why? We need badass offensive lineman. Not 5th round bounce around LBs. I seriously don’t get it, unless they hired him for practically nothing.

  3. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Maybe they weren’t fully sold on what they saw from Nassib last week

  4. allen Lofton Says:

Bucs signing a linebacker must mean we are not desperate for an OL

  5. Iamabuc Says:

Don’t understand the expending when we need 2 or 3 Olinemen…wtf?

  6. R.O. Says:

What OL players are you looking for the Bucs to sign. 2-1/2 weeks before week 1. Have plenty of time after final cuts before Practice squads are set. Quit panicking like teenaged girls.

  7. Bird Says:

Bucs pounce on a guy thats huh?

Hard to find his stats. So who got cut? Cause i thought they were down to 80
And why? If only keeping 4 olb? Unless someone maybe got hurt at practice we are not aware of?

  8. Marine Buc Says:

    Ummmm…. Ok?

  9. D-Rok Says:

I must admit I don’t see the fit of this signing, as I think our team has more pressing needs than a backup LB. However, I do concede not knowing as much about the team make-up than the shot-callers at OBP. I trust they know what they are doing.

But C’mon Man! As fans we are all clamoring for O-line help, and we get a reserve LB? I admit this signing was eventually needed for this season, but the timing seems off. Perhaps the Bucs are TRULY happy with the current O-Line? And/or, waiting patiently for the waiver wire next Tuesday? I dunno, man, I just don’t know.

  10. regulator16 Says:

    Can he play OL?

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Conte Piscatelli … Avery’s an Inside LB, not Outside like Nassib. His signing tells me Bucs really aren’t all THAT satisfied with the LBs they have backing up LVD & White. Not sure Avery’s the answer though in our type of defense. Goes 6′ & 250 lbs (middle LB type?), but ran a 4.59 in the combine. Minter is faster than that, and he’s still sitting on a couch it sounds like. And yes, I’m sure we did sign him for next to nothing.

I don’t look for the Bucs to sign any OL until teams cut down on Aug 30th. Got a hunch that JL will be getting LOTS of calls once guys get released. Until then, it’s tampering.

BTW, one possible side effect of keeping Jensen on the roster until after cut-down day is that whoever’s spot he occupies for that day MIGHT get snatched up by some other team.

  12. D-Rok Says:

Quick! Somebody like DR research this guy and his stats to see why we signed him. I’ve heard his name but know nothing about the player.

  13. Zwak Says:

Strange we need offensive line help..

  14. Marine Buc Says:

So I guess Grant Stuard is on the bubble at this time…

Good luck Grant. I hope you are able to win the battle. If not – hasta la vista baby.

  15. D-Rok Says:

LOL, DR, never one to disappoint. Thanks!

  16. BucsFan81 Says:

But can he play offensive line.

  17. David Says:

Is it for depth because Gill just went on the IR?

Everyone expects a guard, and that would not be surprising at all, but I’m also wondering about safety. Although the number 5 guy, Turner, has looked decent.
I’m wondering because Neal is not playing the rest of preseason with some sort of injury and he’s got that injury prone history

You apparently have no idea how the NFL works. If there were a “badass offensive lineman” hanging out on the street that was better than what we have, then they would sign him.

There happened to be a LB available that they thought might be able to upgrade that position. So the did it.

Are you high or just stupid?

  19. Cobraboy Says:

Gill is out as OLB, so maybe this is to fill his space for the Colts.

Everything I read says OLB, but that may be in a 4-3, not a 3-4.

Nassib is an outside LB. Different position. Thanks for the insightful comment.

Strange we need offensive line help..

By all means, we should just ignore other positions because this fan thinks we’re desperate for O-linemen.

If there were O-linemen hanging around on the street that are an improvement on what we have, you can be sure Licht would sign them.

Are you high or just stupid?

  24. George Says:

Nice opportunistic pick up. Coaches must see Genard as an upgrade over one of the existing inside linebacker reserves. A physical specimen.

  25. sasquatch Says:

Apparently, there’s a lot of idiots who think that you can’t pay attention to a different position if you have an issue on the O-line.

Apparently, these idiots think there are just offensive linemen hanging out that would instantly upgrade our team but Jason Licht is too busy signing a LB to notice.

Seriously, the commenters here have an extraordinarily low capacity for logical thinking.

  26. sasquatch Says:

Stuard is probably going to be released. He’s been injured and he just can’t play LB. Now they add an experienced LB and Fatukasi looks like he may be a UDFA find this year.

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Remember Kevin Minter?…….this is his replacement….

  28. sasquatch Says:

Avery appears to be built for the inside in Todd Bowles’ scheme. He’s short (6-0)… Note that our shortest OLB is Barrett at 6-2… the rest are 6-4 to 6-7…

  29. Bird Says:

He lines up 90% of time on the outside but you called someone a dummie for thinking otherwise

Nothing worse then someone accusing others of the exact thing he actually is in real life

    What a moron

How humble of you to concede that!

So are you saying that needing an O-lineman means they can’t sign a LB that can upgrade that position? Do you have rocks in your head?

To repeat again, if there were O-linemen hanging out on the street that would upgrade what we have now, Licht would be ON IT. O-line depth is not an easy thing to come by in the NFL. Are you suggesting all other transactions should be avoided until we find O-line help?

Are you high or just stupid?

  31. Bird Says:

The steelers signed him to be the #3 outside linebacker
Go to highlights. Almost All from the outside

But yah the dummie above is calling everyone else a dummie

First off, no need to insult people.

    Secondly? Wrong.

He was signed as a body for the remaining preseason games. This guy will not make the final roster.

    How?

He was signed as a body for the remaining preseason games. This guy will not make the final roster

Maybe, maybe not. He has more starting experience than any of our other backup LBs… He looks like an inside LB in our scheme, meaning he’s competing with KJ Britt, Stuard (gone), and UDFA Olakunle Fatukasi who looks good. He has an excellent chance to hang if he can play inside and if it’s between him and Stuard, I think this guy stays.

  42. Maniac Buc Says:

Sasquatch, exactly. I also think Stuart could clear waivers and be added to the practice squad anyway.

  43. Maniac Buc Says:

People on this site be like, “Aaron Donald was to sign with us for league minimum, but we should pass because we gotta replace Stinnie…” SMH

  44. Capt.Tim Says:

    Another area that lacked depth.
    Good pickup

  45. Wild Bill Says:

Why get your panties in a bunch. This guy got cut VERY early. A low cost signing for a quick look before the big cut downs begin. Any decent linemen will likely be among the final cut downs. Bucs get a cheap look at a possible back up at linebacker. No big deal.

  46. D-Rok Says:

GO BUCS, GO JBF Posters lol!!!!!!!!!

  50. SOEbuc Says:

Not like we’re not desperate for LB depth without Minter and Gil. Bucs and Licht are waiting for teams closer to final cuts to pick up OL.

  51. sasquatch Says:

People can criticize my tone and my insults. Valid.

But nobody has yet explained to me why they got wound up about signing a LB because we have a need at OL? Anyone? Does anyone think there are good OL just hanging out there and Licht is simply refusing to sign one because he’s made a minor signing at LB? The 2 things have nothing to do with one another! So, is it wrong to call the kvetching over a LB signing instead of an OL stupid? I mean, can anyone explain why they think it’s a problem to sign a LB? Like with an explanation that actually makes sense?

  53. Winny Testaverde Says:

Bottom of the roster churn move…nothing less…nothing more. Nassib gets pushed around like a shopping cart, runs himself out of the play or has his attempted arm tackles broken early and often. Not sure he deserves that love/props he gets around here. Like Rudolph…he’s washed.

  54. brooks Says:

    Why a lb?

  55. Crickett Baker Says:

Sasquacks is your theory that if you say the same thing over and over you will achieve your desired result of getting people to agree with you? That goes beyond stupid and into insanity range. Besides, it’s extremely boring…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  57. Jeffrey Becker Says:

Not long after reuniting with Carl Nassib, the Buccaneers are adding another edge-rushing piece to their equation. They are signing Genard Avery, according to InsidetheBirds.com’s Adam Caplan (on Twitter).

The Steelers made Avery one of their Tuesday cuts, moving their roster down to the new 80-man limit. This came as a bit of a surprise, but Avery will nevertheless have another chance to catch on as a rotational rusher somewhere.

Avery also has experience as an off-ball linebacker, with the Eagles trying the young defender in this role last season. The Eagles used Avery as a 12-game starter in 2021, though he played just 34% of the team’s defensive snaps. Avery made 43 tackles (four for loss) and registered a sack in 2021. Pro Football Focus ranked Avery 56th among regular linebackers last season.

The Browns traded the former fifth-round pick to the Eagles during the 2019 season. As a rookie, Avery showed some pass-rushing chops by notching 4.5 sacks and 14 quarterback hits despite starting only five games. He has not been able to replicate that production as a rusher in the years since.

  58. Jeffrey Becker Says:

The Ravens could be a trade option, Auman offers, holding a potential guard surplus featuring Tyre Phillips, Ben Cleveland and Ben Powers. The team is unlikely to keep all three.

  59. BucsNoles Says:

So apparently he is better than Gill

    ——————

Crazy… I thought badass offensive linemen were available all over the place…. you realize that EVERY good offensive lineman is already on a roster, right? There are over 2500 players on NFL rosters at this time…. in a few days that number will shrink to just under 1700 and you think great offensive linemen are just out there for the picking?

  63. tampabayallday Says:

    He’s better than Gil

  64. b4l Says:

oh you mean no distracting stupid news about brady or depressing news about injuries or early retirement, or how the starters aren’t even practicing, much less participating in preseason games? that’s is all i can expect anymore from this mess of team

  65. b4l Says:

  66. Defy9Ordinary Says:

It’s pretty easy to tell who’s played football (on a competitive level) & who hasn’t, in relation to these comments. You can also tell who watches the team most closely, even during their practices. It’s still no excuse to stoop to a level of IGNORANCE, where you’re insulting someone because they may hv made a mistake about a player’s position or don’t agree w/your take, etc. GMAB! Yeah, we’re all such great GM’s & NFL Coaches/Coordinators; Players even, that’s why we’re commenting to ‘JoeBucsFan.com’ (no offense Joe’s)! My one applicable comment, depth at any position is always acceptable. Btw, those whom think we hv a suitable Oline at this time — smh #LFG #EyesOn8 #ProtectTheGOAT #StillHere #TheNextOne
