Bryon Leftwich Opens Up

August 27th, 2022

Playcaller Byron Leftwich.

Grab an ice cold Big Storm beer and carve out 40 minutes to learn about your beloved Buccaneers offensive coordinator.

Joe really enjoyed listening to Byron Leftwich on The Pivot podcast.

It’s great to hear Leftwich diving into a variety of subjects, from his “unbreakable” bond with Bucco Bruce Arians’ and how Arians’ recruited him to when Leftwich knew he wanted to coach and things he discusses with Tom Brady and more.

If you’re tight on time, then screw the pregame shows for tonight’s Bucs-Colts preseason game, and dial up the Bucs’ playcaller like he hasn’t been heard before.

Really fascinating how Leftwich explained how Arians let him make his own mistakes and the professional trust they’ve shared over many years.

Also pay close attention to Leftwich talking about how free agency quarterbacks would want Tampa on top of their list. Joe thinks it’s a great window into the 2023 season, whether Leftwich is with the Bucs or not.

Did anyone ask him why he’s so insanely predictable on 1st down and refuses to use the playaction pass? Why he’ll literally run up the middle 8 times in a row, then on the 9th time, instead of using playaction pass, he’ll got to shotgun to show the defense that, yes, he’s is indeed going to pass the ball…

Saying don’t run up the gut on every 1st down isn’t saying you can’t run the ball, just mix up the play calling some.

  2. Dew Says:

I will. Patriots lost their 2nd pick wide receiver to injury. Bet they are looking for another one. We could make Scooter available for a guard?

  3. 99 55 47 20 Says:

Would love to crack open a Big Storm beer and set aside bout 40 mins for an Ira Podcast lol.
    LFG!

Is the game on any station? Or website?

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Dew – No one is giving up anything of value for Miller, you might be lucky to get a conditional 6th rounder, or a 7th, certainly they’re not giving up a former 1st round pick for him.

But I have no issue with the Bucs trading a pick of value, we’re all in on this year, and damn the future. Whatever the Brady wants, go get it. It think the Bucs want to see how the line plays tonight before making any deals.

  6. Maniac Buc Says:

Dew, we already took their available guard!

  7. BucBoy Says:

Bucs blew it. Had they properly developed Trask last season and this season, he would have made good trade bait for a lineman. I know for a fact other teams are interetsed in him but say they haven’t seen enough. Not that I would want to see Trask go, but it might be best for his sake as this community has too many irrational haters.

  8. CrackWise Says:

    @Rod Munch

What if we through in Cam with Miller for an OG?

  9. Slacker Says:

They were all in the year they completely wasted a pick on Trask. Probably would be an asset right now

  10. CrackWise Says:

    BucBoy

Everybody always hates what they fear. AND the unknown sends many people into fear.

Trask is just a target because people thing Brady is here for the long haul. Little do they understand. HE IS FREAKING 45. <– Such a great number BTW

  11. Bird Says:

Ladies and gentleman …i give you bucboy

Acts like he is Literally not old enough to drive yet. And So sad. “This dang community is mean darnit. “

And you dont think buc fans dont want a second round qb pick to be the future of the franchise?

Its ok for people to give their opinion and say he was great in college but probably not the guy in the pros. Already told you , my oldest brother was upset the bucs selected trask w a second round pick. And he is probably a more diehard gator fan then you. But he is no homer. Like most normal people

What is it with gator and nole homers on this site?

  12. Rod Munch Says:

CrackWise – I don’t think either one of those players have any trade value, plus the Pats just spent huge on TEs last offseason. Teams know you’re going to cut someone, and that just completely undermines the trade market. What Licht could do is throw in Darden/Miller/TJ, one of them, plus whatever pick they were going to give up anyways, and at least give the appearance of not cutting the player.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

It is always smart for Bucs fans to read “Gameday Tampa Bay” on gamedays.

  14. Oneilbuc Says:

Bucboy. The fans on this site would have gotten rid of Brady back in the day .

  15. George Says:

Leftwich doesn’t bring much to the table.

    Brady makes everyone look good

Once he is gone it’s back to wining 6-7 games a year max

  16. Chris Tucker@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Leftwich was once a number one draft pick, but his long wind up/slow release doomed him, among other things.
I agree that he is way too predictable with most of his play calling.
But something must have worked because we were near the top of the NFL in Offense in 2021

    I found it elsewhere.

KINDA HARD TO BE THE FUTURE WHEN ONE SEASON YOU DON’T PLAY AT ALL AND THE NEXT SEASON YOU PLAY ONLY WITH SCRUBS. I HAVE ASKED SEVERAL TIMES, AND NO ONE HAS ANSWERED, HOW WOULD BRADY DO UNDER THE SAME SCENARIO?

Already told you , my oldest brother was upset the bucs selected trask w a second round pick. And he is probably a more diehard gator fan then you.
ALREADY TOLD YOU, NOBODY GIVES A RAT’S ASS ABOUT YOUR BROTHER. PLUS I HEARD HE WAS UPSET ABOUT THE BRETT FAVRE PICK AND THE JOSH ALLEN PICK AND THE TOM BRADY PICK TOO.

What is it with gator and nole homers on this site?
NOT BEING A TRASK HATER DOES NOT MAKE ONE A GATORS HOMER. AS FOR THE FSU HOMERS, ASK AROUND, THIS SITE WAS 99.99% JAMEIS LOVERS.

  19. Craig Says:

BucBoy, Brady sat the bench behind Drew Bledsoe for a couple of years.

He got in a game because Bledsoe was injured. Everything turned out okay from that, why do you think Trask is so bad? Not old enough to know the history of the sport?

Trask will be fine, he has the unteachable things down, the rest is small stuff, and he can handle that.

  20. 99 55 47 20 Says:

Was a great listen. Ty Joe

  21. BucBoy Says:

“Craig Says: BucBoy, why do you think Trask is so bad? Not old enough to know the history of the sport?”

You either completely misread a comment of mine or have confused me for someone else.

  22. Bucsfan13 Says:

@Craig. Brady is the biggest outlier in sports. He’s the exception to almost anything and should be exempt from any discussion in comparison to any other QB. I wish you Trask fan boys would understand this. I don’t hate Trask, but please stop mentioning Brady’s career arc in comparison to his. Brady also played in a completely different era. Let’s also not engage in revisionist history. No one was happier to see Bledsoe get hurt than Belichick. He and Bledsoe didn’t get along, and Bill wanted Tom to start.

The biggest thing is that Trask isn’t even the number 2 right now. He’s behind Gabbert!! Enough of the Trask talk, I’m ready for the season. Crackwise must be related to Trask. The guy won’t shut up about Trask and he brings him up in any conversation that has nothing to do with Trask. If Trask went to Ohio State, none of his fans would be advocating for him this hard. It’s homer at its finest.

  23. Alanbucsfan Says:

Would’ve been interesting to hear Leftwich’s take on what happened with AB during the Jets game-how a player with so much talent, ability and will to succeed can just turn on a dime and meltdown…

  24. Slacker Says:

I’m not judging Trask at all….just think it was completely the wrong time to draft a QB with the situation the team was in at the time. Possible QB of the future was an afterthought with them built to win now. That player could be benefitting the team instead of being third in line for reps

  25. CrackWise Says:

OK, I decided to play the interview for my pregame show. Its a good interview considering I have never heard BL open up like this.

Just not my ideal choice for a head coach. But BL is a good dude for sure!

  26. David Says:

I really hope he doesn’t leave after this year. He has been absolutely fantastic and is only getting better.

  27. CrackWise Says:

Although the intro song should send all of the crybabies into a frenzy. Can’t be saying the N word. LOL

  28. Dooley Says:

You’re welcome Joe, you’re all welcome

  29. Wild Bill Says:

All I am saying is give Trask a chance. When you win like the Bucs have the past few years you have zero chance in drafting the top QBs. That means you draft a lower ranked qb and hope he becomes at least a really good back up . And trading for a disgruntled qb from another team is no guarantee either.

  30. Brazen Zebra Says:

Imagine. It’s Sep 2023. Leftwich is OC, and Garappolo is QB. Bucs go on to double digit wins, and make the playoffs. No SB appearance. Brady? He’s throwin as a 46 year old Slash-Man: QB/Coach/GM/part-Owner/Ball-Boy with Miami. Shame on me for even thinkin it!

Great interview with the PIVOT guys, most of their interviews are great, check out the one with Sapp also for Bucs fans
