Byron Leftwich Has Been Good To Mike Evans

July 18th, 2022

Bucs OC Byron Leftwich.

Maybe when Mike Evans stands before thousands in person in Canton, Ohio — and millions nationally on prime time TV — he might give Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich a shoutout.

Since Leftwich arrived in Tampa for the 2019 season, no receiver in the NFL has been a touchdown machine like Evans. Leftwich has overseen an offense that has turned Evans into the league’s best scoring weapon through the air.

In Leftwich’s first season, Evans had eight touchdown catches. In 2020, Evans grabbed 13. Last year Evans had 14 touchdowns. Not only does Evans have the most TD catches the past three years, it is also the best three-year stretch of Evans’ career.

Joe believes when Evans does get into Canton, Leftwich might be in line for a thank you on what will be a historic night for the NFL.

No one has been better than Mike during the last five years. I wonder who Leftwich’s critics will blame if he produces another top three scoring offense four years runnng? The dude ain’t perfect, but he is damn good.

Not sure if it’s been BL who’s helped ME13’s game or TB12 (I think I’m favoring the latter). Mike got his 1,000 yards in each of his first 4 years working with Jameis, but his catch percentages were meh (309 catches in 579 targets … 53.4% … with 32 TDs). He also got 1,000 yards in each of these last 4 years, but was a lot more ‘efficient’ in doing it because his catch percentages improved markedly (297 catches in 479 targets … 62.0% … with 43 TDs).

Mike’s 2 best years have no doubt been 2020 & 2021. He’s barely made 1,000 yards receiving in each of those 2 years (2,041 yds total), despite the fact that he’s been targeted least in any of his 8 years (only 223 targets). Yet they’ve been his most productive, with 27 TDs & a catch rate of 64.5% . ME13’s a beast.

Is it Leftwich or is it Brady?………let’s be generous and say it’s both.

  5. BuddhaBuc Says:

It’s Brady. Accuracy matters. Less targets, better percentages.

@defesne: don’t forget, Evans got to 1k with the immortal Josh freaking McCown tossing the rock haha

  7. Goatfarmer Says:

It’s Mike. Then Brady. Then Lefty. And Arians.

And it didn’t hurt having Godwin, AB, Gronk and Brate around to draw coverage.

    What Goatfarmer just said!

ME is definitely a first round Hall of Famer!!! He might not have burner speed but he does muscle separation and can go up above most corners in this league!!!! That’s why he has so many TDs!!

Won’t be long now!!!!!! Go Bucs!!!
