Blaine Gabbert Is Re-Signed

April 6th, 2022

What a yawner this is following this afternoon’s news of the Bucs’ signing safety Keanu Neal in free agency.

But it’s still news. The Bucs have re-signed backup QB Blaine Gabbert for his fourth season with Tampa Bay.

Last year, Gabbert, 32, re-signed in early May, so he’s either finished looking around or the Bucs aren’t into playing games.

Joe has no confidence Gabbert can get the job done, and Joe hopes Kyle Trask beats him out for the No. 2 gig. But Gabbert coming back says a lot about what Tom Brady thinks of him. And that endorsement is good enough for Joe.

    Golf clap.

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

Moot point as long as TB stays healthy. And if he doesn’t, we’re dead anyway.

  3. D-Rome Says:

Bucs are going into the season with 4 QBs on the roster? Brady, Trask, Griffin, and Gabbert?

  4. Bird Says:

    Yawn clap

  5. Tim Says:

Pretty awful we couldn’t re-allocate the few million we’re going to throw at Gabbert for ANYTHING else and actually give our now 2nd year alleged quarterback of the future the backup reps instead?

  6. David Says:

I would imagine either Gabbert or Griffin are gone at some point in the preseason. Probably a training camp move since Brady won’t be around most the spring. I would really like to see Trask as the number 2 to get mop up duty this year.

  7. SB~LV Says:

Looking at the rankings for this years QB class
Trask with a year under his belt (with a NFL team) makes me feel better about the pick last year.

  8. Pewter Power Says:

lol so he’s also back because Brady wants and it’s not a wise move by the coach and front office at all? Damn lol I’m really hating the nfl off-season more than usual

  9. Kalind Says:

Tells you everything you need to know about Trask. Gabbert AND Griffin were signed. Don’t give me the ‘camp arm’ BS. You sign undrafted rookies for those jobs. You don’t use up cap capital. Trask should be traded immediately.

  10. Zzbuc Says:

Really don’t get it , unless Trask is trash!!

  11. AnonymousBuc76 Says:

ZzBuc I was thinking the same thing.

  12. Gbobucsfan Says:

    4 qbs??

  13. Jimmy Says:

    WHAT ABOUT F’ING KYLE TRASK???

  14. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Who is going to get cut once Baker Mayfield becomes available?

I agree entirely…….there seems to be no way we keep Gabbert & Griffin…..I am suspecting these salaries are not guaranteed.

  16. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

Disagree with Pewter Power, Kalind and Zzbuc. I’m not a Gabbert fan but…he knows the system inside and out. Who’s on the street that you can say that about. Gabbert will work in a pinch if Brady goes down – who else is out there that can do that? As for Trask, the plan was always to let him sit and learn at the feet of the master for a few years. Don’t forget that Trask played in the SEC and played well. There just isn’t much left in FA so this makes perfect sense. Better than wasting a draft pick on a QB – especially with other needs and this putrid QB class about to get drafted.

  17. SaintsFan59 Says:

    Blaine Gabbert… Congratulations.

  18. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Whew…

Now I’ll be able to sleep tonight.

  19. Biff Barker Says:

This signing would have been big news three weeks ago. We are so freaking lucky to have TB back.

  20. Oxycodoms Says:

Lot of brainiacs on here wanted trask to start the season even though no-one on the team really seems to think much about him

  21. Anonymous Says:

Gabbert is garbage and any practice and game time he gets is time trask doesn’t. And if God forbid TB12 can’t go neither are getting us to the big game

  22. Oxycodoms Says:

    Hopefully hes tradeable

  23. Allbuccedup Says:

Don’t why we brought in Gabbert and Griffin you know what their capabilities are. Unless they are going to trade Trask during the draft. You know they are not going to trade him to a division opponent or are they.

  24. HC Grover Says:

    Maybe they trade Trask?

  25. Allbuccedup Says:

Some mock drafts have Detroit taking a QB at pick #32. Trask is probably better than any QB at pick #32. Maybe they can work out something!

  26. Allbuccedup Says:

Also maybe Brady is giving indications he might play two years.

  27. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Does the team expect Tom to leave? Why sign 4 QBs when you drafted the heir apparent in 2021. Huh? Most teams have 4 QBs in training camp. –Joe

Trask trade? But what value does he hold when he hasn’t played a snap? And teams don’t even want Cam or Baker on cheap deals.

  28. DBS Says:

Looks like the consultant is still pulling the strings.

  29. Listnfrmafar Says:

Waste of money. It was the perfect time to get Trask acclimated.

  30. SPARKY Says:

I think it will be like last year. Griffin will be on the practice squad all year. His job is to help Trask learn. Do they keep him signed so he gets the NFL benefits and pensions as a thank you?

  31. Buc4evr Says:

Meh, Gabbert will be good to close games out. Griffin is probably going to be cut after training camp…. Trask? Who knows, sounds like he doesn’t have a chance.

Wonder what is going on with Gronk and Suh?

  32. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

Alot of people seem awfully short-sighted on this one. No one is saying Blaine is God’s gift to Quarterback. But he & Brady CLEARLY have a rapport in analyzing live bullets (sorry for the analogy, military personnel) as they fly in games.

  33. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    Trask #2
    Gabbert #3

Cmon people, this is not a slap at Trask. Gabbert is only there as a vet presence on the sidelines.

  34. Ash Says:

It’s crazy that people think they would just hand Trask the job he will have the opportunity to compete and earn the spot just like it should be just because they drafted him doesn’t mean he doesn’t have to compete.

  35. BUCman Says:

Have to laugh at the Trask haters saying this is a reflection of the teams feelings on Trask. NOTHING has changed!!!! Everything is going according to plan. Like last year they are going into a potential Superbowl season with a HOF starter in Brady, a seasoned backup that knows the system & has chemistry with the starter in Gabbert, a promising young QB in year two of his development to be your future starter in Trask, and your yearly practice squad QB that knows the system in Griffin. Again, NOTHING has changed!!!! It would be negligent if they went into a season where they are expected to compete for a championship with a second year guy who hasn’t taken any NFL snaps as your only backup. This has been the plan since they drafted him last year. We should be celebrating this! We have the best of both worlds! We have our HOF QB to make a Superbowl run and we have the ability to continue developing our future QB in the wings. Just because they aren’t having Trask do on-the-job training during a Superbowl year doesn’t mean they view him negatively. It’s just common sense which seems to escape many of you.

  36. Brandon Says:

Great re-signing. Most are too dense to understand or comprehend it.

  37. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    Well said Brandon & BUCman.

  38. Jmarkbuc Says:

    BUCman

I agree. I haven’t heard the team express an opinion either way, nor should they publicly.

Rodgers sat behind Favre for 4 years. Not a bad thing.

  39. Oneilbuc Says:

The Blaine Gabbert signing is a friendship signing. This doesn’t tell me nothing about Trask. BA benched Gabbert after 3 games in Arizona but they’re still friends so this is more of a looking out for Gabbert type of move from BA to Bowles.

  40. Bojim Says:

    Yay.

  41. Bucamania Says:

Why re-sign Ryan Griffin is my question.

  42. Goatfarmer Says:

    Um……..Griffin is better than Goobert.

  43. catcard202 Says:

    Bucs needed a QB2 w/ experience… Gabbert’s cheap, knows the system & culture… So be it.

All I know is, today’s signings are bringing draft focus a little closer into view.

The longer the FO let’s JPP & Suh flap in the UFA wind…The more likely it is that the Bucs go get a some young guns at DT & Edge/OLB at the end of the month…With only a handful of roster spots not already claimed/planned for.

  44. IE Buc Says:

When you got Griffin for the experience, you don’t need Gabbert. Waste of money and space. Undrafted free agent qb who gets cut in preseason, should be the #4 camp arm.

  45. Brazen Zebra Says:

Save money with a lucky charm QB. If Trent Dilfer can win a SB, then Blaine Gabbert can probably do it too.

  46. Wild Bill Says:

Ho-hum. Too early to worry. Changes can still occur.
