“He’s The Priority”

March 2nd, 2022

Bucco Bruce Arians on the CBS set Tuesday.

It’s become clear as Joe mingles through the NFL Scouting Combine that the Bucs have a priority free agent, even if general manager Jason Licht doesn’t want to publicly share a priority list.

The voice tones when Licht and Bucco Bruce Arians reference Chris Godwin are full of love, respect and admiration. But during his visit to CBS yesterday, Arians finally made it clear.

“He’s the priority,” Arians said of Godwin’s place in the Bucs’ free agency pecking order.

While Arians didn’t place a No. 2 ranking on center Ryan Jensen, he did tell his former CBS colleagues that Jensen is the focus among the offensive line re-signings, but he hopes to get Alex Cappa and Aaron Stinnie back, too.

One thing Joe has heard little of in Indianapolis … talk of Carlton Davis returning for his fifth season in Tampa.

‘One thing Joe has heard little of in Indianapolis … talk of Carlton Davis returning for his fifth season in Tampa.’

Bucs can’t afford both Godwin AND Davis AND fill the basket with the rest of the groceries that we need. Godwin’s the priority; no surprise there.

Also means though that the Bucs will surely be drafting a CB in Rnds 1-3 as either a potential starter OR a key rotational player. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see us also sign a CB free agent in the $8-$10 mil range who could also potentially start. We’ve got to shore up our Secondary.

  2. Christos Says:

I believe you cant let Carlton Davis go. He is our best corner by far, SMB and Dean are too inconsistent. We have problems with Corners for so many years and now that we have a good one we ll let him go and start all over again. I think we must keep him.

  3. SufferingSince76 Says:

That’s because they are going to franchise Davis.

  4. Beeej Says:

Ooohhh, I hadn’t considered that. What WOULD it cost to franchise David?

  5. Letsbuccinggo Says:

Sign Casey Heyward to replace Davis hes older but still would be the best in this DB backfield.

  6. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

I agree. I’ve been calling for a WR in round #1. We absolutely need a real WR3.

But if we lose C. Davis it might be CB in round one and WR in round two.

Adding a solid vet FA CB is probably a solid idea as well…

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The the right player is there, there could be an argument for drafting a CB in round 1 even if we keep Davis…..but I think we will draft a DT……

At this point, I could see……DT, CB, WR, Oline, TE, RB…..

  8. cmurda Says:

I agree SS76. Godwin is the priority on a long term deal which leaves open Carlton to be tagged which is exactly what I think will happen.

  9. sasquatch Says:

Godwin is the priority? Well shiver me timbers! There’s a newsflash!

    Duh!

  10. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Chris Godwin is the no2 ranked Free Agent of 2022 behind Devante Adams a player whom will be tagged or signed to long term deal by Greenbay.

Meaning much of the NFL will Chris Godwin, if he isnt tagged and willing to play on the tagged.

What stands out to me is the focus on OL would be Jensen. I would think if they are commiting longterm for big money at Center it would be to protect and snap the ball to a top end QB.

Is that maybe a sign we are working on a deal for a bug move on QB?

Then again theirs a lot of hot air being blown this time of year. Is Bruce just saying that about Jensen to help him squeeze extra $$ into his next contract? Im not good at reading the tea leafs……Joe help.

  12. Bucs Guy Says:

Jensen is the priority bend Godwin. Why? Because he’s going to call out blocking for blitzes. Brady used to do this, but now it will be Jensen. Also need to keep some nasty on the line and nobody has more of it than him.

Marpet’s departure may allow us to re-sign Cappa and Stinnie. Look for a 4th rd small school pick at G again.

TBBF … ‘At this point, I could see……DT, CB, WR, Oline, TE, RB’.

You do realize TBBF that you just broke Joe’s heart. Pass rush, pass rush, pass rush. Thinking right now that we’ll draft a DT, CB & DE/OLB in the first 3 Rounds. Probably can get an OLineman, TE, RB & WR in the next 4 Rounds who’ll stick this year.

Means though that we have to sign at least 2 of our FA OLinemen (very likely 3), plus re-sign Lenny AND Gio. Since re-signing Godwin is our Priority #1, getting a WR3 can probably be accomplished in FA also. Some how, some way we’ve got to find a decent CB who can start if necessary in place of Davis (I don’t like the idea of starting both SMB & Dean as our 2 outside corners). JL’s gonna earn his money this off-season.
