Ron Rivera Talks Ali Marpet Retirement

March 2nd, 2022

Joe is at the NFL Scouting Combine, so of course Joe has sought perspective on Ali Marpet’s shocking retirement from a head coach who knows Marpet’s game well.

Joe chatted today with Washington head coach Ron Rivera and the subject of Marpet came up.

Rivera coached against him as the Panthers’ head man and twice in the past two years in the nation’s capital.

“He was a guy that finishes,” Rivera said. “I’m trying to remember the play and the team, because I remember watching game tape and how he finished the guy into the ground. And I said, ‘God, that’s just a nasty dude, man.’ But he’s a guy you a tremendous amount of respect for because he played hurt, too.

“… He’s been a big part of what they’ve done in the last few years. He’s helped them get to where they are now. But the retiring is a little bit of a surprise. You know it does kind of blindside you. I can only imagine how their coaches are feeling when you lose a guy of his caliber, his stature, on their football team.”

Damn, it was sobering hearing Rivera reflect on one of the great Bucs guards of all-time. He’s really gone.

Mad respect for Marpet doing his thing and cashing out while he’s ahead.

  3. Jason from JA Says:

    Yessir,
Marpet has been a GOOD soldier for this team.
His contributions both on and off the field have been outstanding.
I wish him all the best in his retirement!

  4. Mike Johnson Says:

Marpet came in with a PLAN. Not many do that. He calculated how much bank he needed for himself to live happy after Foottball. I just admire an individual who can say, screw the fans and the money and walk off like a Boss. Leaving 10 mil on the table would be hard for most people. Live large Ali.

  5. BuddhaBuc Says:

HC Grover…take that negative attitude back to Sesame Street. Nothing but mad respect for Ali. He’s going to be hard to replace.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have to always remember that these guys have their own priorities and they have every right to exercise them.
It works both ways….the team can do it and they can do it.

I wish him the very best….he deserves it.

  7. D-Rome Says:

Did he do enough to get into the Ring of Honor?

  8. BA4President Says:

    tampabaybucfan,

You said it exactly right. Happy retirement Ali.

  11. James G Arntz Says:

Football is a violent sport. It appears more & more players are getting hurt. Seems that some players have no problem going to extremes to make a play and have no regard that they may end another players’ career. Don’t want to use the word ‘dirty’ but some amount of professionalism needs to be used. Their own career is on the line every play as well. Wish Ali the best!

  12. VA Tom Says:

Dude’s smart. Happy he played his game and got paid. Smart MFer. Enjoy the sh*t out of your life with the financial independence you built in 7 yrs Ali. Smart move.

  13. cmurda Says:

No doubt Tom. As a fan it obviously stinks but it is a very smart move by him. Mad love for #74.

  14. SB Says:

That was BY FAR the most intelligent take I have ever heard from you Mike Johnson.
    Kudos!

  15. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I’m sure Marpet could have left much sooner if it was solely about the money. If you have 10 million in the bank and you make 5% of that a year off your money, that’s a cool $500,000.00 a year.

  16. DoooshLaRue Says:

It sucks but he did what he thought was best for him.
You can’t hate him for that.

“how he finished the guy into the ground. And I said, ‘God, that’s just a nasty dude, man.’ But he’s a guy you a tremendous amount of respect for because he played hurt, too.”

So Ali is as a prototype of a lineman you want to draft.

Thx Ali for your time with the Bucs driving dudes into the ground lol
You have so many more years left for you bro in your adventure called life, may you do as well in the next phase of your life my friend.

    GO ALI GO BUCS!!!!!

  18. David Says:

    Still can’t believe he retired

  19. Bruce Blahak Says:

Damn lefties are just too damn smart.
