Use Your Noggin!

November 9th, 2021

Head games.

Joe talks directly to Bucs fans virtually every day, even if Joe doesn’t leave the office for a couple of days.

Hardcore Bucs fans often call Joe. And man, people are still peeved by that gross loss to the slimy Saints over a week ago. Joe can certainly sympathize.

You know who else is stinging from that loss? Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians, that’s who. Yesterday Arians was asked if the team can use that loss as sort of a wake-up call to knock off the dumb penalties (there were several).

Arians sort of said the team better wake the hell up.

“Yeah, I would hope,” Arians began. “I mean, I thought we already fixed [the dumb penalties]. We hit the quarterback in the head too many times. You have to be very careful if you’re jumping to bat a ball on where you land, especially with the rules the way they are now.

“Again, we’ll wait and see next time. We could go with one penalty and then come back with 10 or 11. It’s something we have to be very, very aware of.”

This sort of reminds Joe what a high school basketball coach once told a tall center who liked to swat shots back in the face of shooters. The coach noted this often led to fouls because of the defender’s follow-through.

Instead of trying to make the shooters eat leather, the objective is to disrupt the shot (or the play) and perhaps get a loose ball.

If dudes are going to bat a pass back, just get your digits on the ball (or in Jason Pierre-Paul’s case, a mitt). In other words, use your noggin, not hit the quarterback’s noggin.

Good advice, but this is just the basics of the modern day NFL. Pass rushers should be looking for when the ball is snapped, too. That basic fact should reduce Bucs penalties.

There is no question that we are committing far too many penalties. Lets be clear though, some of those penalties called were so ticky-tack awful. It felt as if the refs were doing all they could to benefit NO.

Like stop trying to guestimate the snap and being called offsides then giving a free 1st down when the D stops them and then they go on to score the winning points. That’s always a fun one to watch

Just slow down when you get to the QB. Instead of trying to hit them full speed treat them like you would a three year old child. Just give the QB a big ol hug like you would give anyone you love. The object isn’t to cream them, but caress them gently. You don’t have to even get them on the ground. Just hug, them, and hug them some more until there forward progress is stopped. More hugs for the QB’s less hitting.

the refs are terrible…and last night took the cake…ref hip checking a player to flag with unsportsmanlike…HE should be suspended or removed! WTF is going on? they’re ruining the game and now controlling the outcomes somewhat…terrible

  6. Joe in Michigan Says:

Agreed on the refs. Some of the calls are so bad that you wonder if the integrity of the game has been compromised.

  7. Chris l Says:

I’d text and email you if I knew you joe lol!

  8. Wideleftandright Says:

The refs were so one sided I found myself rooting for the hated Bears for the first time ever!

  9. Bucman Says:

Let there be legal gambling on the games. There are certain “organizations” that will get the refs right.

  10. TampabayDJ82 Says:

Wideleftandright- THAT’S WHAT I’VE SAID SINCE THE FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR !! THE OTHER TEAMS O-LINE HOLD OUR D-LINE ON ALMOST EVERY PLAY AND RARELY GET CALLED . HOW ABOUT THE WILL GHOLSTON PENALTY FOR BUMPING INTO THE QB AS THE LEFT TACKLE RIPPING HIS HELMET OFF MAKING IT SO HE COULDN’T SEE? I CAN GO ON AND ON .. BUT SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE IT’S GETTING RIDICULOUS !!

The only way to console myself after that ugly loss is to reminisce about beating the saints in the playoffs and sending fake a$$ Brees packing.
