Tom Brady Vs. Steve Spagnuolo

February 7th, 2021

Third time a charm?

If any defensive coordinator can chortle because he has a history of getting the best of park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking Bucs quarterback Tom Brady, it is Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Two of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history came at the expense of Brady. That was when the Giants, led by Eli Manning both times, pounded Brady. Spagnuolo was the Giants’ defensive coordinator..

Ron Borges of SI.com seems to think that even though Spagnuolo has gotten the best of Brady in Super Bowls, that perhaps Brady is lying in the weeds for tonight’s showdown as the two square off in the Super Bowl for the third time.

But can Spagnuolo come up with a scheme this time that Brady can’t solve, now that Brady is facing his defense for the third time in just 13 months?

That scenario didn’t work so well for Saints’ defensive coordinator Dennis Allen this season. His defense won both regular-season meetings with Brady’s Bucs but lost to him, 30-20, in the playoffs with Brady throwing two touchdown passes. Does familiarity breed problems for guys like Spagnuolo if they face Brady too frequently?

As Borges points out, Spagnuolo fully understands Brady is one of the smartest quarterbacks he has ever faced.

Joe’s readers may remember, but Brady’s family moved out on him (temporarily) to give him solitude to prepare for the Chiefs.

Brady has been by himself for 12 days studying the Chiefs’ tendencies.

Ruh-roh.

  2. Infomeplease Says:

The STARS have ALIGNED for the BUCS!!! Yes SS has taken TB12 down in the past but that is just more fuel on the fire that’s burning inside TB12!!! A BUCS WIN IS DESTINY!! A SUPER BOWL WIN IN THEIR OWN STADIUM!!! GO BUCS!!!

  3. Colonel Angus Says:

He had a dominating D Line with HOFer Strahan anchoring it. Not sure if it was scheme more than relentless pressure from the Giants front 4 that gave Brady problems.

  4. Rayjay1122 Says:

There is absolutely no way that we are gonna allow the Chiefs to hoist the trophy on our field.

  5. Adrnagy Says:

Brady is up for revenge. Same goes for Carlton Davis and Winfield vs hill

  6. HeyItsAdam Says:

    I honestly don’t think Brady:
    • …is going to let Spags get over on him again.
    •…in his own house.
•…let alone twice in one season.

Brady strikes me as a Michael Jordan type who will use the most petty of reasons to motivate himself to stomp you into the ground.

  7. Adrnagy Says:

Add Antonio even if you have concerns about his knee you have to account for him and you know he can make big plays. Also playoff Lenny running good. Things line up or stack up for spagnolo 4 man rush or if he brings blitz Brady will perform.
Underestimating oline how good they’re playing.

  8. DaBux Says:

Uh, Lefty might have something to say about this. And I think his surprise:

    Playoff Lenny.

    157 rushing, 48 receiving

    2 TDs

    MVP

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

  9. DaBux Says:

And another 7 figure bet on the moneyline for the Bucs. The smart money knows…

  10. Listnfrmafar Says:

The 2007 SB was a freak occurence, Giants D was elite and it took a ref not to make a in the grasp call and a David Tyree helmet catch to squeak out the win.

Stop the BS so called fancy blitz and Bucs oline has morphed to one of the best Olines in the league so they are.more than up for the challenge. Brady is going to pic them apart. Maybe Spaggs will be in line for a new job after this game like GB DC.

  11. Ben green Says:

It’s not rocket science, in the suberbowl they got home with 4 rushers and flooded the underneath. KC can’t do that. If he wants to pressure brady he’ll have to blitz and take chances with the wideouts 1 on 1. Totally unrelated gameplan and a poor analogy of the 07 Superbowl

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

Everyone is talking about Brady and Mahomes
    Of course. They are amazing.
But I think our Running backs and defense will decide the game

  13. OBF Says:

Brady is a Shaolin warrior monk

  14. I CARE NOW Says:

    55-45 Bucs

Records will be shattered and nothing will ever compare. This is the Super Bowl for all Super Bowls. The 101rst will forever be remembered best of all time.

  15. MadMax Says:

    “I TRUST MY QUARTERBACK”

Man, its so nice to be able to say that!

  16. orlbucfan Says:

Hey Joes: best BUCS Radio channel, which one?

  17. ATrain Says:

    Wait till Mahomes sees V-Diesel

  18. HeyItsAdam Says:

Everyone likes to say Spags “beat” Brady.

Brady left the field with the lead. It’s not his fault his D (Rodney Harrison) couldn’t hold it for him. Hardly a victory by the DC if you ask me.

  19. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

31-27 Bucs. I can’t see us blowing out the Chiefs and absolutely NO lead is safe with Mahomes.

  20. Infomeplease Says:

Simple math: TB12 +too many offensive weapons+ more desire+a defense out for respect= a SUPER BOWL BUCS WIN at RAY J!! The stars have aligned!! Heck even the weather is perfect!!!!!

  21. MadMax Says:

    38-21 Bucs

Just something real quick…i dropped a $100 before the season started on our Bucs winning the SB…10-1 odds plus my hundred back

Know whats funny, my 1998 ford ranger needs transmission work thats going to cost between 1000-1200….perfect timing baby! A few side bets at work, so i’ll make about 1300.

And those NE fans who said Brady wont come to Tampa when I started calling for him last year…yeah, they’re pulling for our Bucs baby! I love it!

  22. alton green Says:

ok folks here it is for the last time. #1; double Tyreek Hill #2 disrupt Kelce at the line of scrimmage and last but not least; CATCH THE DAMN BALL for God’s sake!!

  23. SKBucsfan Says:

This is a different team. If we could have played even a little better in the first quarter the Bucs would be the favorite. I’m glad they’re the underdog. Hopefully it make them more hungry
    LFG Bucs!!!

  24. MadMax Says:

I wanted to use this song and add Bucs highlights but didnt have the time….

But the message fits…WELCOME TO THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE

Cool tune, hope guys allow it Joes 🙂

SOME INTERESTING STATS I JUST READ…

The Chiefs D has one of the WORST Red Zone %s in the NFL. They give up TDs on like 76% of Red Zone appearances by their opponents.

ALSO… the Chiefs D is one of the WORST against passes thrown to RBs out of the backfield.

The Bucs should know this by now and we should be passing to Fournette and Rojo in the flat all day.
