Ian Beckles: “Are The Buccaneers Able To Beat The Saints? One-Hundred Percent”

January 16th, 2021

Riffs on the Bucs.

Like all of Bucs fandom, a former Bucs starter is stoked for the divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Former Bucs guard (1990-1996) and popular local sports radio host Ian Beckles took to his podcast “In the Trenches” to scattershoot about his old team being two wins from its second Super Bowl.

* “Offensively they are finally clicking. Offensively it looked good. Defensively, a whole different ball of wax. I’m not feeling it.”

* “The Saints are not that,” Beckles said mockingly about Washington and quarterback Taylor Heinicke. The Bucs “have to represent substantially better than they did [against Washington]” on defense. “To let that guy throw for over 300 yards is alarming because the Saints will throw for 500.”

* Beckles said prior to the game last week he had never heard of XFL backup Heinicke “on any level.”

On Leonard Fournette:

“Fournette ran hard. I haven’t said that all year. RoJo may not be the most efficient runner, but he runs hard.”

On Cam Brate:

“Cam Brate may be the X-factor when it is all over. I have been hard on Brate. I thought he played well.”

On furniture-tossing, bicycle-throwing Antonio Brown:

“AB is starting to be AB. What is great about this Buccaneers offense is you don’t know where to focus. You don’t know where to go. Gronk will get his. The receivers, it is kind of pick your own poison. I guarantee the Saints are looking at this Buccaneers team, not like the team they punched in the face twice. This is a scary Buccaneer team. There are a lot of pieces in place.”

On the offensive gameplan against New Orleans:

“I would like to see them run the ball but I’m not going to waste my breath. That’s not what we are. We’re not that, but that will get you in trouble.”

On the chance of a Bucs’ upset Sunday night:

“The Saints are beatable. Are the Buccaneers able to beat the Saints? One-hundred percent. But that’s on them.”

As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages listeners to submit Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

  1. Bird Says:

    Mickens sucks

AB should take kickoff and punts
Its playoffs baby. Gotta go balls on the face

  2. RICHARD weeks Says:

Bird , I agree with you. Our special teams suck.
Have we even crossed the 40 yard line yet?

  3. RICHARD weeks Says:

Bird, I agree with you. Our special teams suck
Have we even crossed the 40 yard line on kickoff or punt returns?

  4. Listnfrmafar Says:

If not AB because you need him, how about Miller? Mickens is horrible. Offense needs to play like last week and D get Brees off the field at least a few times. Keep them to field goals.

  5. Ftmyersbuc Says:

I agree about special teams could be better, however i also know why the coaches keep mickens. For 1 he has an NFL return TD for the Falcons under his belt. 2nd he doesnt drop the ball he catches it cleanly (fingers crossed that continues) it’s a carefull what you wish for, probably the worst turnover is a punt return muff, its so momentum swinging. I wouldn’t trust Miller over mickens. Also probably hasn’t practiced it in literally years.

  6. Kentucky Buc Says:

4th down could be the difference in the game. Payton will go for it on 4th down probably several times. Maybe even in his own territory. Stop them, get off the field .

  7. dmatt Says:

    Bird,
I’m with u bruh, a Micken’s suck! He’s pure garbage. Run into his man or fall if he even sense contact. He’s a waste. It’s playoff time Micken’s hasn’t contributed at all, garbage in garbage out. Put AB back there he’ll bring some excitement, he’s a difference maker.

Sac gonna help you out Joey and give you fans some confidence in the Buccaneers so Buckle Up. Rhonde you study this film. I have every snap for the 2020 season recorded

Saints Vs Bucs Game 1- The blocking wasn’t as bad as you say Jensen Man handled #97 Roach numerous times. #90 got rolled by Ali numerous times. I even seen both of them hold there man on solo blocks, So that’s 3 more linemen to block if they don’t blitz so why we can’t protect Tom. It’s the scheme! D.Smith and T.Wirfs didn’t let the pass rush overwhelm them we was just off go back and look. Tom and the offense. The defense was giving it to them boys. Devin flung Alvin like a bag of potatoes. Sean Murph was tackling Cook on his swag. Capt Lavonte David was on Tayson back. Todd Bowles was locked in. The offense was pedestrian. I never seen the Bucs get so many 3 and out on Brees. We can beat up our big brother. Shaq was trying to out think Ramshack. JPP won late against Armstead. The weak spot is #62 Yo. Listen D line you can work him. William Gholston Hear a real one Andrés Peat can be beat. Power power swim and quick twitch him. Shaq swipe and dip. JP motor stutter step and stunt on’em. Suh power and get skinny big guy. Nelson Power Power and more power off the edge. No TE can block you that’s easy work. Khalil warn the refs they holding you. I see that hand skill and pass rush it’s almost Aaron Donald like keep working bro. Stevie you rested so I need everything you got. Todd rotation watch grouping and die by the blitz. Lefty open up the shed door and hit the gas whoop arse and don’t ever let the foot off they neck. Bruce we don’t need a screaming arse uncle we need a solid grandpa motivating his grand kids to go to WAR!

  9. Hodad Says:

Bucs have been searching for a dynamic returner in like forever. It’s not going to happen Sunday no matter who’s back there. Catch it clean, Mickens can do that. Kick offs, don’t try to return them.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

@Beckles …“I would like to see them run the ball but I’m not going to waste my breath. That’s not what we are. We’re not that, but that will get you in trouble.”

I agree with what Beckles is saying here (run the ball more), but I don’t understand what he means after that by ‘We’re not that, but that will get you in trouble.”

Bucs’ OLine did an excellent job IMO run-blocking against Washington’s very stout DLine, and Fournette ran like the 1st Rnd pick that he was. We kept their DLine off-balance just enough to make some big plays in the passing game (and yes, I do believe that there’s a relationship there).

The Saints’ Secondary is quite a bit better than Washington’s was, and it’ll likely be harder to hit on so many deep passes. Brady has throw 3 TD passes against New Orleans this year & the longest has only been 9 yds. Saints have only given up 2 passing TDs over 20 yds all season, so I’d guess their deep coverage is probably pretty solid.

Saints do an excellent job of running a BALANCED ATTACK and that seems to be the key to them controlling the clock (they rank #3 this year in TOP at 31:58 … Bucs rank #21 at 29:02 TOP). Bucs may never have the same type of BALANCED ATTACK that the Saints employ, but danged, we can surely rush more than 5 times for 8 yards like we did in our last meeting. And for heaven’s sake, PLEASE don’t turn the ball over. Turnovers kill.

  11. $acbuc$ Says:

You shouldn’t talk about fans when you run a dictatorship. It’s too real over here laser focus. Side Bar MJ the hottest thang on TV. I told you about Kay Adam. Jaime Duncan and Clarissa Thompson. Leanne Sweden to ver ver. Catherine Zeta Elle and Sage. Candice so beautiful I can’t believe she play basketball. Now stop me when I’m lying. MJ Costa is so fine Her husband should hide her from the world. You wasn’t watching the game you was watching Rachel Watson. You gotta at least look like George Clooney to get close to a dime don’t look like slimer off ghostbusters thinking you deserve her.

  12. Fernando Says:

First I agree with him lol

  13. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

The bucs ARE a running team douchelaruoo!! The running game is what stopped Brady from getting pressured all night again the Redskins!!… (I refuse to not call them the Redskins! This PC crap has gone to far and I’m not playing by their impossible to keep up with rules anymore!! If they made a football team called oh say the Patriots and it was some white guy on the helmut I don’t think I’d be very upset about that… Being a victim isn’t “cool” it just makes you weak!! Stop being weak whiny bit**** America!!)

  14. Leighroy Says:

I have no idea what sacbucs just said. Google translate doesn’t either. I think I saw something about 3 and outs? If so, that’s the key to me. Offense kept stalling out of 1st gear that second game while the saints were gone in 60 seconds.

My prediction: keep pace and score 1 more time than them in a shootout. Something like 41-38.

Just please don’t let Brees be the one with the ball with 1 minute left! That ball needs to be in Brady’s hands, either 2 minute drill to score or 4 minute drill to close.

  15. Robert Noonan Says:

We want to see the Bucs dancing in the locker room tonight

  16. Felix Says:

    Bucs leadership/coaches,

Please, please, I’m begging you. Build up the secondary. Seems like anyone can beat them anytime they want’
