High Compliment For Byron Leftwich

January 27th, 2021

Joe’s never heard this nuance about the head coaching potential of Byron Leftwich.

Of course, Bucco Bruce Arians is Leftwich’s greatest cheerleader. He’s quick to tell the nation that he doesn’t “do sh**” in the Bucs offense; Leftwich is the playcaller and the ring-leader.

Arians pulled Leftwich off the golf course and into NFL coaching about five years ago because he believed his former quarterback with the Steelers had what it took to be a great coach.

Speaking on CBS Sports Radio this week, Arians explained that Leftwich has the full-view of the game required to be a head coach. In the same conversation, Arians did not refer to Todd Bowles in the same manner.

“Byron is a superstar on the rise,” Arians said. “He’s got great rapport with Tom [Brady] and all the quarterbacks and just sees the game. Not just as a quarterback, but he sees it as offense, defense, he sees the whole game.”

Of course, it’s nothing new to hear Arians propping up Leftwich, but for Joe this chatter reached a new level.

Gut feeling: Joe thinks if Team Glazer asked Arians to pick his Bucs successor, Arians would choose Leftwich over Bowles.

I think Bowles will have the job and they all know it. He’s building Leftwich up to others.

  2. mg Says:

Both of these guys will be gone soon.

  3. ModHairKen Says:

Let’s just focus on KC, alright?

There’s been a little too much backslapping by Arians lately.

    Focus, people.

  4. BradyBucs Says:

I still think Leftwich is WAY OFF on statistics & probabilities with his play-calling of low success percentage long pass plays on 3rd and short.

It’s just mind-boggling to take unnecessary risks on 3rd and short to try and complete long passes up the sideline or other risky routes.

We have so many weapons and so many options for calling smart plays to convert short 3rd downs. There’s no reason to be putting 20 yards of air under the ball on those plays as we seem to only covert 1 out of 3 or 4.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

    need it say more!!!!!

    BL IS WORKING MAGIC!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  6. 813bucboi Says:

    need i say more…lol…

put some respect on BLs name….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  7. Will Says:

Since we’re known for taking shots on those 3rd and shorts I’d love to see misdirection on some of those to really keep a defense guessing along with a flee flicker (it went big the ONE time we ran it this year) BL had done a great job of staying away from the run up the left on 1st down during the playoffs but kinda fell back into it during the GB game. RoJo and Lenny both run hard in the middle that’s no doubt but still get them to the edge on the right side. Whirf’s is better at getting out in space than Smith and can create that run lane.

  8. DoooshLaRue Says:

    BL has been lucky.
Bowles would make us a better HC.

  9. SKBucsFan Says:

Good. I hope someone offers BL a head coaching job next year. If Brady reties after his 8th ring (and let’s face it, if he wins more they will have to design a toe ring for him) and becomes the Bucs OC. We would have the most prepared offense every week.

  10. EA Says:

Not seeing it with some of these 3rd a short calls, anyway we don’t know how much of the play calling is Leftwich or Brady and his ” gotta make them defend the whole field” mentality.
Tom Brady can make any player and coach around him better and owners know that.

  11. 813bucboi Says:

obviously, the 3rd&short play calling is just fine….because we’re in the SB…

funny how you clowns fail to mention we were 6 for 6 on our first 6 3rd downs and 9/14 on 3rd down overall….30+ points in 3 playoffs games…

lucky?…nawl…BL has been MAGIC this year….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  12. 813bucboi Says:

BA will move into the front office with licht….

BL will be the next bucs HC…bowles will be DC/asst. HC until the perfect position opens up…

    book it!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  13. Clean House Says:

Agree with mod hair Ken- stop bsing and focus- and don’t play soft zone like idiots who deserve to lose

  14. buxsxntkt Says:

Agree with BradyBucs, particularly against Mahomes. Don’t risk those deep shots, take the high percentage short throws and keep Mahomes off the field. Need as many long sustained drives as possible this game to keep our defense rested, they will be doing a lot of running, especially the big guys.

  15. buxsxntkt Says:

although the name BradyBucs suggests to me he is a NE Brady fan not a Bucs fan, and perhaps should get booted for suggesting playing more NE style football ?

  16. Fuzzball Says:

For some reason I think it will be Goodwin or Leftwich not Bowles, though Bowles would be my top choice.

Leftwich makes me nervous the fact that he has so little experience and only with Bruce. He’s BAs boy so BA is always talking him up but thats little to go off of. Happy with the offense this season but its equal parts BA and Tom too I’m not giving Lefty all the credit

  17. DoooshLaRue Says:

So Lefty gets the credit for great throws and catches but it’s not his fault when it doesn’t work?

813, I know you love you some BL but come on…..

  18. sauron's eye Says:

I think our offense could be better. I don’t think we fired on all cylinders yet this season. But we have one more game, and it’s the Super Bowl against the next best team in the league, so lets see how we do.

  19. mg Says:

Run the ball, play action and take advantage of one on one situations when they show up.

  20. geno711 Says:

I think BL gets the credit and the fault. Unfortunately, there are a few on this site that seem to suggest Leftwich does not know what he is doing.

The truth of the matter is that the proof is in how well our offense has succeeded. You just can’t win in the NFL without good coaching.

Spurrier, Chip Kelly, Matt Nagy, Marc Testman, Adam Gase, June Jones, Josh McDaniels, Dirk Koetter, Anthony Lynn, and Jason Garrett are all worse offensive coordinators than Leftwich but some of you want guys like that. Just do not get it.

Leftwich succeeds in his play calls.

  21. Tbbucs3 Says:

I’d rather have Leftwhich as HC rather than Bowels once Arians leaves.

Bowels is a better coordinator than he is HC and I think the players would rally around a young coach in BL more than they would a guy like Bowels who seems to have one foot out the door with all these interviews he’s taking.

Arians said he’s going for 2 SB’s so it sounds like he’s got 1 more season left. Have to stay in house with the next hire because this culture being built is special. I think Leftwhich is next in line.

  22. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

BL has done a great job with play calling.
That surprise TD Pass to Scotty Miller was his call, with 8 seconds left!
A good friend was at the game, and he said that play quieted the stadium!

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Leftwich actually got a little creative down the strech – then the last couple of games he’s returned to his garbage playcalling of running up the middle for 1.8 yards on every 1st down. The defense has got the offense a lot of points, but in this game against the Chiefs the offense needs to show up and play 4 quarters – and running up the middle on every 1st down will ensure a loss.

  24. geno711 Says:

Rod good to see you back online.

  25. Stanglassman Says:

2022 Bucs HC. Who’s the Qb?

  26. Anonymous Says:

I’m still wondering after all these coaching changes and the fact that Ryan Griffin is still on this team have they seen something in him and he may be our next QB? If not then how the heck does he survive coach after coach?

  27. Jmarkbuc Says:

Cmon BL has the GOAT on the field and apparently doing some coaching during the week…

BL’s been doing this for 2.5 seasons, why does he deserve a HC position?

Of course BA is gonna talk him up, whether he deserves it or not. Either that or he wants BL to move on? BA already said he’s staying.

  28. Joseph Mamma Says:

Josh McCown was closer to getting a head coaching job…..

  29. The Red Mirage Says:

Why does Leftwhich repeat every sentence three times?

  30. DalvinCookRules Says:

The only good play caller the Bucs have is Tom Brady. Anyone else on this team who even associates his name with play-calling is pure garbage.

  31. Joe in Michigan Says:

DalvinCookRules: I’ve never understood how a human being could call another human being “garbage”…You must be ELITE in everything you do, except for MAKING PREDICTIONS, you said the Bucs vs. Saints game would be called at halftime because the Saints would be up by so much. I can see why you’d be so judgmental, being ELITE at most everything. Hahahahaha

  32. GO Team Says:

How did Leftwich do with Winston at QB? Having the GOAT and the receivers of the Bucs would make most every OC look good.

  33. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Yes, Great Players can make Coaches look like a Genius, and average players can make even great coaches look like fools.

  34. Pewter Power Says:

He sure couldn’t see the game before the bye week!!! Leftwich don’t ever go into a game and run the ball 5 times against anyone if you want to be a head coach, they don’t even do that in college
