Character

November 30th, 2020

The heat is on.

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians, in a throwback to his old coach Bear Bryant, likes to talk about the “character” of players.

After a bad loss, it’s common to hear Arians say something along the lines of, “We will find out about our character” in the next game or the next week. Something like that.

So in that line of thinking, Albert Breer of SI.com liked what he saw from the Bucs yesterday after the Super Bowl champion Chiefs got finished toying with the Bucs.

I actually think we saw some good stuff from the Bucs. After that first quarter, in which Mahomes went off, and Tyreek Hill caught seven passes for 203 yards and two scores (that’s an 812-yard, eight-touchdown pace, FYI), the Bucs found themselves down 17–0, and later were in a 27–10 hole. So I really think they showed some character in rallying back in that situation against a team many regard as the best in football. Also, Rob Gronkowski (six catches, 106 yards) came alive, Chris Godwin (eight catches, 97 yards) continues to look like the kind of guy who would’ve fit perfectly in one of Brady’s Patriots offenses, and Ronald Jones’s potential at tailback is clear. And the defense really settled down after the first quarter. So no, they didn’t get the win, and Brady’s not really a moral-victory guy. But there’s a lot to work off of with this one, I think.

Well, Joe doesn’t think there were any moral victories yesterday. But Joe will play along with Breer’s premise.

Now the next piece of character Joe wants to see is the character from defensive coordinator Todd Bowles — that he can come up with a gameplan against the Vikings in two weeks where his defense doesn’t put the Bucs 17 points down in the first quarter and doesn’t have wide receivers prancing through the secondary untouched, or doing backflips into the end zone like it’s some 2020 reboot of “Soul Train.”

How about the offense come up with a first quarter game plan that doesn’t involve 9 passes = 3 quick three-and-outs? Sure the Defense got rocked, but they also didn’t get more than a 2 minute breather between sets.

After X number of weeks of playing video game OC and not running the ball (like a legit NFL coordinator), our confidence in the O’s game plan should be nill.

The “QB whisperer” couldn’t fix Winston and now has the GOAT and has him underperforming with more talent than the Buccaneers Super Bowl team. “No risk it no Biscuit” I don’t see the Biscuits…

I would say no…you have lost your way as a Buc fan. But that would be stupid on my part because you and TMAX are NOT Buc fans.

So at least you trolled me into a response with your manifest ignorance..don’t waste your time replying as I just have.

    “Hill is very special.”

True dat! And it’s also true that we have difficulty giving other teams credit for simply having great players who played well.

My problem is with Bowles!!! We all knew Hill was special long before kickoff.

So Bowles single covers him with a DB who is struggling with a 4.44 forty yard speed against Hill who runs a freaking 4.29!!!

That’s a MAJOR difference in speed! How did Bowles expect the significantly slower Davis? Where the F was the help? Are our safeties that freaking stupid? I’m a moron fan and I could watch on television and see they totally left poor overmatched Davis on a island.

How do we suppose Davis’ confidence is today? Did you see the body language on the sideline. I wish freaking Bowles had to go out there and be HUMILIATED by Hill. The truth is this was Bowles humiliation just as much as Davis.

I’m disgusted by any coach that just throws his player into an impossible situation and then upon watching him get repeatedly burnt does NOTHING to provide help.

Perhaps I’m mistaken. Maybe it was our safeties who played with their heads up their rectums and not Bowles.

Whatever that was painful to watch. One player starts off FOUR percent faster than the other and you simply say…good luck.

The only good that came out of that humiliation was the other DB’s were peoed too. If it doesn’t break us and totally destroy our confidence maybe it will have been worth pulling poor Carlton Davis’ pants down in public.

Almost gota go back to toilet bowles moniker. How about game planning before halftime Todd? My goodness that’s numerous weeks in a row.

If you like wasted opportunities, you’ll love the way the Bucs coaches plan for a game. They’ll all be fired after we miss the playoffs again. It’s a Bucs life.

NO PLAYER BELONGS ON THE FIELD OVER 40 AND NO COACH ON THE SIDELINE OVER 50…. OLD IS NEVER GOOD… old drains societies while youth builds them. old wisdom is bad wisdom!

  14. LVMYBUCS Says:

Is Earl Thomas available for a one year contract or we cant afford him because we spent to much on offense players?

  15. Pewter Power Says:

Bruce Arians is the problem. It’s his team so when your coordinator does not have a plan to stop the obvious fastest playing on the nfl in the first quarter and also your offensive coordinator continues to call plays that can’t get a first down for a quarter, having to make changes so soon in the game because your getting blown out means your coaching sucks. This is dirk koetter style coaching

  16. tmaxcon Says:

same thing with rockers. these bands hanging on and playing shows with 1 original member into their 70s is pathetic and why rock n roll no longer matters. people want young and hot not shriveled and old! you no longer need security at rock concerts the priority now is the paramedic to ticket holder ratio.

  17. Will Says:

Hey Joe I thought I was up on all the rule changes in the NFL but obviously not. Can you tell me when it became a rule that you couldn’t make any adjustments until after halftime and if that’s not a rule can you let the coaches know please.

  18. DBS Says:

This is not the first game this lousy defensive backfield has had trouble. The end of last year we heard from the experts here they had turned the corner. Now they are neat the end of year 2. Our new ballhawk safety? what has happened to him? All these know who to go after Not use their run game. Just go after our secondary.

  19. Joe Says:

Hey Joe I thought I was up on all the rule changes in the NFL but obviously not. Can you tell me when it became a rule that you couldn’t make any adjustments until after halftime and if that’s not a rule can you let the coaches know please.

Joe vividly remembers Greg Schiano scoffing about “halftime adjustments” saying you need to adjust all the time and the only halftime adjustments he has his team do is eat an orange or a banana and go to the bathroom.

Dude got *killed* by Bucs fans for saying that. “How dare he not make halftime adjustments!”

  20. Will Says:

Lmao Joe heck I think this staff is the total opposite
They take notes during the entire 1st half and only make adjustments at halftime. I think the only time we saw adjustments early was the Green Bay game so we know they can do it. Yes in game adjustments need to happen sooner for this team to be successful. Along with a commitment to Rojo.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

Bowles needs to play more soft zone, because nothing scares and offense like rushing 3 and then having 8 guys standing around.

  22. Rod Munch Says:

What I don’t understand is what happened to those ‘exotic’ blitzes that were actually working early in the year? Why did the team go from being aggressive, to being a soft defense that just stands around?

I think we’re seeing why Bowles got fired from the Jets. He started out strong there, then things only got worse after that. I’m not sure if Bowles just suddenly got lazy, got disinterested or just decided cowardly coaching is the way to go, but something has changed. Now even if the Bucs do blitz it’s almost always no more than a 5 man rush, and they generally telegraph it before the play. For example, why did David, who dominated in that Packers game when he was allowed to rush, not been rushing the QB? J Watson has more sacks since that Packers game than David does. That’s some terrible coaching.

  23. Will Says:

@Rod I do remember an interview with Devin right after the Green Bay game if I remember correctly where he said he went into Coach Bowels office and told him to let him loose and for a few games he was going crazy now he hasn’t made a splash play in a while. You may be onto something about him coaching scared. Lets hope after the bye they unleash everyone and offensively stop sitting Rojo all the time. I don’t care if they were down by 17 in the 1st quarter there’s still a lot of game left feeding Rojo will open up the pass. Fournette for as big and powerful as he should be or was when he came in the league doesn’t run the same. But I’ll continue to say it if this continues and I’m Rojo I’m telling my agent to get me out of here.

  24. unbelievable Says:

Well ya know, one way to not be down 17 points in the 1st quarter against the best offense in the league is to have your own offense get more than 27 yards between 2 offensive possessions… I know crazy right?

  25. jimm Says:

losing vita for the yr changed the defensive effectiveness and bowles hasn’t come up with anything yet. vita gone changed lb effectiveness and exposed dbs because opposing qbs had more time and were able to step into their throws.
