“I Don’t Think The Chargers Can Win This Football Game”

October 4th, 2020

Breaks down today’s game.

Chris Simms doesn’t believe the Chargers have enough horses.

While the former Bucs quarterback thinks the Chargers may have found their franchise quarterback in rookie Justin Herbert, he will need a running game.

Problem with that today, Simms said on his podcast “Unbuttoned,” is who the Chargers will have to run against.

Simms seems to think the Bucs’ ferocious run defense will turn the Chargers into a one-dimensional offense and that will be too much to put on the shoulders of Herbert making his third NFL start.

Herbert was a last-minute starter for the Chargers three-weeks ago in place of quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Taylor got a punctured lung right before kickoff while getting a shot for pain to deal with injured ribs.

Herbert has thrown for 300 yards in both of his starts,  including an overtime loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Despite that, he has only two touchdown passes.

“[Herbert] is a rookie quarterback,” Simms said. “And he is getting yards thrown. But getting it in the end zone is another story. That’s where there is a learning curve.”

Simms believes Herbert must navigate that curve quickly to give the Chargers a shot at the Bucs and Simms is not confident that will happen.

“The Chargers, they can run the ball but they are not the type to line up and blow you away,” Simms said. “And they are not going to do it this week, against these five freaks on the defense line.”

Simms was clearly counting edge rushers Jason Pierre-Paul and NFL sack king Shaq Barrett as linemen.

“Tampa’s ‘D’ looks good” Simms said. “Their d-line can overwhelm teams from what I have seen. [The defensive line] just run[s] teams over at times. That’s where I look at it and go, ‘I don’t think the Chargers can win this football game.’

“I think the Chargers can be a pain in the butt for Brady and the Bucs offense for a little while.”

Simms sees a Bucs win, 24-16.

Now Simms said all of this despite not knowing the weather forecast (rain is expected) or that the Chargers are down three very good starters on the offensive line, their No. 2 wide receiver and two Pro Bowl defensive backs including Randolph Scott Derwin James.

If the Bucs turn the Chargers into a one-dimensional offense (very likely), watch the Bucs’ pass rush circle Herbert like a pack of hungry Dobermans.

Don’t they all wear gloves these days? They should be able to hold onto the ball, even in the rain.

The Glazers need to give Bowles a 5 or 10 year extension before his name starts being brought up for head coaching jobs. Let’s take a deep breath. If Bowles wants to be a head coach again, he wouldn’t sign it. –Joe Don’t care what they do with BA and BL. We should be 3-0 right now! The defense held the Taints to 17 points or 20 if you count the botched kickoff. Those 2 INT’S should have NEVER happened if BA and BL were smart coaches. Why have option routes that your WR can’t make the right decision his second year in the offense?

Then there’s the out route for a pick 6! How many of the 7 pick 6′ s we saw SHAMELESS throw last year were that EXACT same play? Started the season doing the same DUMB crap we did last year. Thought that Brady wouldn’t make the same mistakes JW3 did but our coaches do not get it I guess. I bet Brady is smart enough to not throw that route again the rest of the season, even if BL calls it. Just get rid of the play altogether, the 5 yards you MAY get is not worth the risk!!!

Caroline beat them, we should too.

BigStinky…this isn’t Madden21, it takes a little while for people to mesh. Every game there has been improvement and thats because they’re being coached correctly. 2 rookies playing like seasoned vets and you believe BA and BL are no good, delusional.

    Dobermans rule. Release the hounds!

Love Dobermans. Had 5 of the black and rust variety. Old age and longer lifespans forced me to downsize to tricolor hunting Beagles. Man, I would be cautious about this game. Chargers had very good offenses for years. Drew Brees was drafted by them. Still, can’t wait to see what Bowles has up his sleeve regarding the defense which is healthy! Yeow, go Bucs!!

Dobies are a nice looking dog…..pitbulls are ugly animals imo.

I watched a bunch of Oregon games last year. Herbert can throw a pretty ball, but he will throw clunkers more regularly due to his mechanics. I never saw him step up in the pocket, he rolls out to avoid pressure. Oregon lost a should win game to Arizona State when Herbert was rattled by a constant blitz. Auburn and Standford beat him by putting constant pressure on him and looking for the rollouts. Bowles should have a field day.

He is going to be good, but I can understand why Lynn said Tyrod Taylor was the starter for “a reason”.

Still, a dry field and heat would have been better for us.

Hopefully they put a Ton of Stickem on Grayson’s helmet!!!!
