Brady-Godwin Chemistry Woes

October 19th, 2020

A former NFL QB weighs in

Yesterday’s dramatic throttling of the Packers hopefully killed all talk of how Tom Brady needs more time to adjust and work with his receivers.

It hasn’t, and a former NFL QB explained in detail.

Bucs fans paying close attention saw Brady bark at Chris Godwin a couple of times during the game. Once was picked up quite well by FOX microphones as Godwin went in motion. Another was after it seemed Godwin and Brady were out of synch on a short, third-down route.

Former NFL QB Brady Quinn talked about both of those situations on SiriusXM NFL Radio today, and he put was adamant the small screwups being seen won’t go away in a hurry and will be a process.

“I do not care how many times they got together in some park or some field before the season started,” Quinn said. “It’s not the same. It helps to a degree, but there’s nothing that can replicate those in-game reps. For example, a third down where [Godwin’s] got an option route, he was working on [Packers cornerback Chandon] Sullivan and instead of pushing up two yards past the sticks, you know, he breaks it off a little bit short right at the sticks …

“The ball was a little bit off, but I think it was because [Tom Brady] was surprised by how quickly he broke off that route. And I think he was frustrated with it. So ironing out those small, minute details, it’s hard to do until you get to the actual season and you have the chance to work on that working against a defense in real-time.”

As for Brady being heard yelling at Godwin to hustle up his movement across the line of scrimmage pre-snap, Quinn explained Brady needed to see to see the “man-zone indicator and to survey the defense” and Godwin was slowing him down.

Joe does not discount the need for Brady and receivers to work together, and certainly Godwin missed games and practice, but Joe just thinks collectively the narrative has been overblown considering what offenses across the NFL are dealing with — and how they’ve performed.

Quinn noted that through the season, it’s clear Brady has confidence in trust in Scotty Miller to feed him the biggest deep shots, and he speculated that trust isn’t there yet for Mike Evans and Godwin.

I do NOT believe either Godwin or Evans was remotely healthy last game, and Evans in Chicago.

A couple of plays Godwin seemed to be moving gingerly going back to the huddle.

  2. Lamarcus Says:

Maybe Brady wasn’t as sharp what Shannon Sharpe was saying. He said Brady had a great second quarter but was 5-13 for 70 in the rest of 3 quarters. And he is not sharp with ME 13 either. Me13 might not have 1000 yards season this year. Maybe we won’t have no player reach a 1000 yards but Rojo which is strange

  3. Colonel Angus Says:

I’m sure Evans would rather win and play in January than have 1000yds. He does have 6 TDs, so there’s that. Brady is going to spread the ball out, if Big Mike is doubled and triple teamed then the ball is going to somebody else. Winning games is more important than personal stats.

  4. SufferingSince76 Says:

As long as they keep winning, who cares how many yards, completions, etc. anyone gets. It’s a team sport and stats mean nothing when you lose

  5. Godlovesbucs Says:

Overblown. He is throwing to the open guy. If mike is doubled he wont force it. Lolk at his td to johnson. Even arians said that was the 4th read on that play.

  6. Mike in LOL Says:

    Wins cure all!! Go Bucs!!!

  7. BucEmUp Says:

I’d keep Godwin over Evans if forced to choose….as much as I love Evans. This is going to be a tough roster to keep together for next season.

  8. ModHairKen Says:

Can’t just have a win, can we? Gotta find something, right? No team is perfect. Not every player is great. Godwin had a nice year last year, but he is hurt a lot and if he was not doing what he was supposed to yesterday, maybe he just needs more training.

  9. Dano407 Says:

It doesn’t help that Godwin has been hurt since game 1. This team STILL has not had Godwin & Evans healthy. That really blows because Bucs offense should be lighting the scoreboard up if they’re healthy. Hopefully they’ll get better each week but it’s really unfortunate.

  10. BillyBucFan Says:

Que NPUP saying Jaboo didn’t have chemistry issues with Godwin.

  11. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

I noticed it too… I also noticed MULTIPLE times Godwin throwing his hands up like he didn’t know what he was supposed to be doing…. Winston didn’t have the pedigree, record or rings to demand a certain standard from his receivers… They are not used to being shouted at and being demanded precision!! They are used to running their routes, Winston not reading it quickly enough and breaking out the pocket, then the WR running their own route to break open… This is a different QB that is a timing QB that throws to WRs that run really good routes!! That is why you’re seeing Miller, Johnson and Godwin get more catches than Mike!! Brady is going to have to go out of his comfort zone in some of these closer games and just throw it up to Evans like he did when they had to come back!! Evans will NEVER be “open” but it doesn’t matter!!! Just thrown him the dam ball when you have a crucial 1st down to make!! It’s going to count a lot in games like the Chicago game!! There were MULTIPLE times he could have went to Evans when he was one on one…. Evans should ALWAYS be thrown to when he is going fly one on one!!!

  12. Aceofaerospace Says:

Nothing to see here. Keep us in playoff contention and barring injuries, this offense will be a well oiled machine. Heck, the offense scored 31 points. Defense played lights out. Wait until the kinks are worked out. OMG.

  13. Lamarcus Says:

Wins cures all but they still human. ME13 does care if he one of best. Not by wins but by his stats. Mike Evans is putting up camp meat like numbers 4 out six games and 3 games he has had under 10 yards

  14. Cwilso89 Says:

Who tf cares what Brady Quinn has to say? That’s why he an analyst and not still playing in the league.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m ok with no penalties, no sacks, no turnovers……I can handle an incomplete pass now and then…
I would say, it seems we could run some more simple short passes over the middle on 3rd downs instead of the out routes……

  16. Coburn Says:

I just want Evans to get his 1000 yards so he can be first to ever do it 7 seasons I believe. But yeah playoffs more important…

  17. Rod Munch Says:

Godwin has missed a bunch of games and a bunch of practice, he’s not in sync yet. But if Godwin can stay healthy then that will come.

However, regardless of him being in sync or not, Godwin being out there means defenses are putting their #2 corner on him and not Scotty Miller, who shouldn’t be anywhere near the #2 WR spot.

Now we just need to get Mike Evans healthy.

  18. Cobraboy Says:

I’m not sure either Evans or Godwin have been healthy, Evans last two games and Godwin last game.

I thought I caught Evans taking himself out of the last game twice like he was hurting, and a few times I thought Godwin looked gimpy coming back to the huddle.

  19. Ed Says:

Why not ask Brady why he is not throwing the ball to any of his black superstar receivers. Someone needs to remind Brady, that he is yelling at grown ass men, this is not 1960 or 1950.

  20. DoooshLaRue Says:

Evans probably will have a problem if he doesn’t get 1000 yards this year.
    A personal problem only.
Hopefully he doesn’t get all bitchy about it.

  21. Joe in Michigan Says:

Mike Evans has been a great Buc, and a great teammate. He’s had several restructures so the Bucs can sign other players. Mike Evans wants to win games, plain and simple. Anything else is a made up controversy.

  22. SOEbuc Says:

Quinn is a genius.Brady and Godwin are professionals and are here to win. No sh#t they’re off, Godwin has been banged up since week two. If the GOAT and team captain yells at you for not being at the right place at the right time, you say thank you very much I’ma work hard to correct it. Godwin doesn’t cry about his Madden rankings.

  23. Bird Says:

    Ed

    Is that you big hog?
Coming in under new poster name with same problem that got you banned

  24. Of course Says:

    NDOG sits down to pee!

  25. Rod Munch Says:

DoooshLaRue – he’s not going to be complaining if he has 15-20 TDs, which is a very real possibility. Also Evans has never been a complainer and isn’t playing for a contract right now, so I’d be shocked if he starts to complain.

However Godwin is playing for a contract, so if things aren’t going his way I could see him saying something behind the scenes, but I’d be surprised if he did it publicly. But if I’m Licht, if Godwin has a few more games where he’s OK but not a star, I really try to pitch him a lowball contract extension.

Speaking of contract, keeping Shaq is getting cheaper by the game. Hopefully he comes all the way down to the $10m range.

  26. Coburn Says:

My ex used to insist I sit down when I pee…. But or course that attitude is part of reason she’s the ex lol

  27. Darin Says:

As long as they’re gellin in the PLAYOFFS!?!?!?!?

  28. Bird Says:

    The chiefs are sick

They ran for almost 250 yards tonight
They can throw for 400 Any other night with mahommes

That is hard to stop Pick your poison

Raiders beat chiefs. Their only loss.
This is another test in las vegas.

  29. orlbucfan Says:

Since when does Methuselah get off throwing short lateral-like passes to Ungodly? I saw him do it as least twice. Stupid. Throw them to Brate or old man Gronkowski. Both Chris G and ME13 are not 100%. Brady knows both are elite wide receivers. He has said as much. This article is a bunch of hot air.

  30. SB Says:

    wow

  31. SOEbuc Says:

    Rod Munch

Behind the scenes where? Brady’s locker room? Not likely.

  32. rrsrq Says:

ME deserves the opportunity for 1000 yards, as previously stated, he has restructured his contract a few times, why can’t he have his cake and eat it too, they can win and throw ME the ball. Maybe he is still hobbled, but if he is out there and you not giving him the opportunity is ridiculous. A least one Buccaneer should have a record to himself (7 – 1000 yard receiving season to start his career). I’m sure the ring means more though – but that’s no guarantee.

  33. Defense Rules Says:

I don’t have a clue where this article came from Joe. Godwin’s been hurt for half the season (only played in 3 games), but I’d say that he & Brady have some pretty good chemistry.

o Saints game: Godwin was 6 catches in 7 targets for 79 yds (85.7%).
o Broncos game: He had 5 catches in 6 targets for 64 yds (83.3%)
o Packers game: He had 5 catches in 7 targets for 48 yds.

So on the season, Chris has caught 16 of the 20 passes thrown to him (for a mere 80% rate) for 191 yds (11.9 yds/reception). He’s only missed FOUR balls so far, and that’s with being banged up from Day .

So are we to understand that warrants an article entitled ‘Brady-Godwin Chemistry Woes’? Considering that Brady’s only hitting on 64% of his passes (many of those very short completions not to guys named Godwin), I’d say that his chemistry with Chris Godwin is the least of our concerns.

  34. Bill M Says:

Reality check. So far the Bucs are a run first team. And Rojo has 3 strait 100 yard games to show for it. Brady throws long to Scotty because he gets open deep consistently and stretches the D. Godwin and Evans are playing hurt. and suddenly Brady goes to Gronk. When everybody is healthy Mike on a fly down the left side and Scotty on a fly to the right side and Gronk and Godwin on crossing routes across the middle and a back swinging out short who can they double team? Only one with a dbs. Lbs can only help cover on the crossing routes so one of the guys will have single coverage deep for sure. And with 3 dbs trying to cover Evans and Scotty, Godwin and Gronk will be working against a single db and slower lbs. Wait and see if/when all the receivers are 100%.

  35. geno711 Says:

    I agree with Defense Rules here;
The Godwin Brady connection seems fine to me.

BTW, a Godwin-Brady play I remember from the Packer game:

3rd down and a well thrown incompletion in Godwin’s general direction. Packers were up 10 to 0.

The Bucs had gotten 2 first downs and then on 2nd and 5 from their own 48 tried a long pass to Gronk that was incomplete.

On that 3rd down play, it appears that the Green Bay defensive back read the route of Godwin and undercut Godwin.

Thank god that Brady saw that and threw it out of reach of everyone. Could have been 17-0 if another quarterback tried to make that play. I am not saying for sure that Jameis would have thrown a pick 6. I am just saying in my opinion the likelihood would have been greater.

Instead, Brady understood that it was early in the 2nd quarter and accepted the incompletion. He did not run around, he did not take a sack. In this instance, his decision was correct.

We punt and three plays later, we get our own pick 6 to change the complexion of the game.

  36. Kenneth Mcallister Says:

It takes time to Gel with a new Quarter Back it will happen but u got to remember these are grown men no man is going to continue to let u holler at them no matter who u are it takes time patience and a lot of practice.

  37. O'Neilbuc Says:

rrrsrq I agree with you bro Evans deserves that much . And remember this is a business it will hurt his money .

  38. lambeau Says:

Mark Schlereth said yesterday the Bucs WR’s are having to get used to being “thrown open” by Brady , who expects them to adjust a route depending on the coverage–he expects them to understand the ball will be in a new spot.

ME13 has had 1k every year he’s been a pro and has never made the playoffs….

yeah he’s human….and every human that plays professional sports wants to be a WINNER at some point in there playing career….

He absolutley pulled for AB to stay on the pats and is one of the reasons he left he also helped Gordon with his life and trued with him so to say that is complete ignorance he has always spread the ball around know your facts dude

  42. Randy Says:

I live here in New England and have been a Pat’s fan all my life. But for what it’s worth the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have never had a QB like Tom Brady ever that is number one.Number two you have been blessed with the Gronk also!!! I am not going to say that the Buccaneers have a great receivers that Tom Brady did not have at any given time.Remember Tom Brady is used to his coaches in New England having players give them their best every day and just keep it simple do your job!!If everyone is doing this every week putting your win or loss behind you and just thinking about the team that you are playing next this Buccaneers team can be a great team and a team that the other teams have total respect for. I will say this you have to gain respect it’s not going to be given to you this takes time and practice and focus!!This is the key to success every day just do your job this equals Winning. And also you will be seen on the stage meaning that you will be playing prime time like this year!!Before becoming a Buccaneers fan this year I never had a chance to watch the Buccaneers. I was always watching the Patriots and going to the games for years. I am really excited about my new team the Buccaneers and that this team can receive a Super Bowl Win!! Thanks and go Buccaneers….
