Screen Gem

Leader of the pack.

The Tribe has spoken.

Joe isn’t a big believer in the PFF Tribe, except for some stats (not to be confused with grades, which are worthless). Of course, many of these stats can be compiled by well-trained orangutans.

So the PFF tribe, based solely on stats, decided to identify the best receiver at running specific routes.

For screen routes, the PFF tribe, typing for BSPN, determined no one is better than Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin.

No receiver has more receptions or yards on screen passes than Godwin, who has hauled in 85 yards on 11 receptions with a touchdown and two more first-down receptions. He’s leading the league by a comfortable margin in yards after the catch, too. His screen passes go for an average of 7.7 yards, yet he sees the depth of target 2.2 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians sure nailed this move.

When Arians first came on board, he wanted Godwin to play slot and that left Adam Humphries vulnerable. He signed with Nashville.

Humphries has been a shell of himself. Godwin has totally blown up.

It’s going to be interesting in a little over a year what the Bucs plan to do when Godwin’s contract runs out, if he’s not re-signed long before that. If he hits free agency, you are talking Powerball kind of cash.

Humphries had a TD, in his last game. I miss Hump, but Godwin is far better, and he can block !

  2. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

If the Bucs want to be able to afford his second contract, it may be wise to make an offer early. Worst that can happen is he says “no thanks.”

  3. mickman Says:

I believe they will sign Godwin early next year.mPowerball cash? I highly doubt it. more like early contrat 14 million a year.

  4. mickman Says:

Those old buc fans that hunk Godwin could be a stron number One receiver you may want to the number two guy tampa signed years ago from the Cowboys. Never worked out, much easier to look like a number one with a true number one like Evans.

the big signing was Alvin Harper.

  5. Pickgrin Says:

    “screen route”

That’s an oxymoron. No “route” involved when you are catching the ball 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage….

At least we are seeing screen passes this year. Rojo had some nice plays off screens last Sunday.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Godwin can play at any WR position but he’s best in the slot because of his blocking…..and we need blocking….

On another subject…..I’d absolutely love to see Vita Vea as RB on short distance runs….he was a RB and I’m quite sure he would be competent at FB or RB occasionally…….remember “Fridge”…..

    What a load!!!

  7. Jason Says:

This is what drives people crazy about Jason Licht. When he’s on he makes great picks like Godwin and Marpet, but then he’ll make a bone-head move like picking Aguayo or the 2016 draft, and cost his team victories.

So basically Jason Licht is the Jameis Winston of General Managers.

  8. Jason Says:

I too like the idea of Vea at rb or fb on short yardage. Unfortunately that would be “creative playcalling” so i won’t my breath.

  9. Sleepy903 Says:

    Winston got Humphries paid.

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

“#1 NFL route to create explosive separation YAC route is the crossing pattern

It is used numerous times by the top OCs. This pattern DOES NOT create interception possibilities for defenders. Godwin would be tremendous running this route

Granda Pa Smurf and Leftfoot DOES NOT run these routes

They continuously run these deep comeback routes that defenders rump. These comeback and sitting routes have the receivers drop their momentum and allows defenders to catch up

Kobe Faker and Bucsfans nationwide deeply apologises to Jameis and his family for having the misfortune to starting his career in this ancient inefficient offensive schemes.”

  11. Conte Piscatelli Says:

The point being missed here is that when Godwin gets a screen he usually has Mike Evans blocking, don’t underestimate the importance of big Mike owning a DB on those screens.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    kobe

crossing routes DO create interceptions IF/WHEN a defense plays zone coverage…..lol…

and we all know JW forces throws, has high throws and throws into double coverage…..

BL is doing him a favor…..

    GO BUCS!!!!

  13. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

Now that they have established the Rojo screen as a formidable weapon, let’s see a fake to Rojo and an opposite screen to Godwin or OJ.

That would really upset the pass rush.

Rojo used to have hands of stone. What happened there?

  14. Jean Lafitte Says:

There you have it, best tandem WR’s in the league and our QB can only muster a 59.3 completion rate. Lowest in the league

  15. orlbucfan Says:

He’s not considered UNGODLY for nuthin’! Also a class act off-field. He will be re-signed.

  16. DB55 Says:

He’s leading the league by a comfortable margin in yards after the catch, too.
