Arians Being “Watched”

November 7th, 2019

Monitored.

Is there such a thing as a “Bruce Arians Watch?” One national NFL columnist working for a rightsholder seems to think so.

Since this season is over, aside from playing the remaining eight games, the biggest piece of Bucs drama is what will happen with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

And if Team Glazer decides to move on from Jameis, does Bucco Bruce Arians follow him out the door? Heavy metal-headbanging Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports seems to think Arians and Jameis are tied at the hip.

In writing about first-year coaches who may not see a second year, La Canfora has a hunch that if the Bucs move on from Jameis, that this season has gone so terribly wrong for Arians, he may just pack it in for good and head to his Georgia lakefront home. Permanently.

Arians surprised many when he ended his retirement after one year, given his health issues in the past, and at this stage of his life and career he and his family have to assess the situation on a yearly basis. That is always and has to be first and foremost. Jameis Winston is fighting to prove he deserves another contract there, with turnovers a huge issue, and would Arians want to endure a rebuild in 2020 if this team cannot make strides? Arians is all about his staff and would love to help his assistants rise through the ranks to be head coaches themselves, but given the way this season is going there might not be upward possibilities in 2020. This situation is being watched closely around the league.

And what does La Canfora mean about Arians/Jameis outcomes are “being watched closely?” Is La Canfora getting feedback from coaches who think this would be a desirable job if Arians moves on? Joe isn’t sure how that can be if the quarterback position is unknown.

And for those who bellyache about paying Jameis, what, you think pouty Cam Newton is going to come here for a discount?

Or God forbid Andy Dalton?

I was surprised to hear Jameis talk this week that throwing the ball away is finally getting thru to him ? Why it took 4.5 years ? Who knows.

So let’s see how the season finishes
To see if he is walking the walk or just talking the talk

No one questions his physical talents
It’s the turnovers and bad decisions that he continues to make year after year. Good game . Bad game . Good game . Bad game with a lot of meh in the middle

Some posters says that doesn’t matter cause look at the Seattle game
Even if he plays great , it doesn’t matter . They will still lose .

    I disagree

If he played like he did in Seattle game more often with 1 or less turnovers (even though fumble was on smith ) …they would have won a lot more games over the years. Look at all the one score games over the last few years.

It’s just unfortunate , he was going against Russell Wilson , the guy who will probably win mvp this year.

  2. RustyRhinos Says:

Or god forbid we resign Winston to a five year contract. Then Arians decides to stop coaching after season two after another poor consistency and bad decision makiing season. And we are stuck with America’s hardest “working to get better” losing record Turnover prone QB. Now that would not be a desirable head coaches job opening.

  3. Allbuccedup Says:

Arians needs to retire. Him screaming at Leftwich on national tv says it all. He can’t handle the pressure of losing and Jameis sometimes erratic play.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There is no way that Arians is tied to Winston……Sure, most thought if Winston could be fixed then Arians could do it…..but what better coach to develop a new QB…..
The option of bringing in a Vet as a bridge (like Rivers) and drafting a rookie QB is better than blowing up the entire coaching staff (again).

Arians’ resume was strong enough for the Glazers without any Winston guarantees.

  5. #1bucsfan Says:

I agree with most of what you said BIRD but if the defense only gives up 14 pts instead of 30 plus a game we have a winning record. Hard to compete wen the defense just rolls over an plays dead. Not saying Winston is the answer at QB but it won’t matter who is under center if our defense can’t do it’s job

  6. Clw JB Says:

    My prediction from the gut….

We go .500 the rest of the season, everyone will be on the “we are turning the corner” bandwagon after we eek out victories against the Cards, Falcons twice, and one lucky victory vs. the Lions or Texans…

2-6 start, 4-4 finish, “progress” will be the tag line -travel, the schedule, the injuries, the youth will be all the excuses…

and they will re-sign JW to a deal similar to DSmith – 3 years mid market

BA and staff get one more try

  7. Little BonPerp 🤡❗️ Says:

Folks, If Bruce Arians is such a great football coach, THEN WHY DID THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS FIRE BRUCE AIRANS AFTER THE 2011 NFL SEASON AS OC AND PLAYCALLER ?

  8. Bruce Blahak Says:

take Dalton over Winston any day…..

  9. stravenite Says:

Chicken and egg scenario, Winston turns the ball over – defense on the field more often – secondary gives up yards, but we can see them growing into it and making more plays (exception Hargreaves who should never see the field as a Buc again !)

Don’t turn the ball over so often means the D gets a rest and is
not continually back on the pitch, case in point at London !.

Can you imagine how this D was motivated by JW play in London ?, reminded me of his debut against the Titans and
Bengals last year, the look of disbelief on Dotson’s face said more than any words as he threw it straight to a standalone
linebacker who couldn’t believe his luck !

Get us a steady vet and draft a QB to learn !.

If Winston is back then the already worn out Bucs fans will leave in droves – Winston out !

  11. FortMyersDave Says:

Clw JB: if the Bucs go 6-10 (beat Az, ATL twice and Detroit or the Jags) that probably means that Jameis probably put up huge numbers to outscore the points allowed by the toilet Bowles D in these match ups, then yeah I can see the nimrods at One Buc crowing about turning the corner and the Glazers will probably convene a meeting with BA as well as Licht and discuss Jameis.

Perhaps they cut bait and run, perhaps they franchise #3 or perhaps they float him the mid market deal you mention (where Jameis could choose to test the market if he feels Chuckie, Elway, Chicago or Washington would offer him more guaranteed coin)…. I like your optimism but Bucs are going to have to smarter with clock management and a lot of other things to win 4 more games as a simply competent coaching staff probably could have won at least 2 of the 3 vs the Giants, Titans and Seahawks….. Right now opponents of the Bucs are probably eyeing them much like opponents of the Jets are looking at Adam Gase and his train wreck; a very possible if not probable win over a bad team that finds numerous ways to lose but man I do hope they win a few down the stretch Clw, its just that this team loses winnable games like a Leeman Bennett/Ray Perkins/ Rich Williamson creamsicle team of the Culverhouse era!

  12. Bobby M. Says:

I dont think there’s anyone doubting Arians ability to groom QBs…..If he cant get through to Winston, then that’s a reflection of Winston. If we go with a young QB, Arians is as good as they come at grooming a young guy and frankly i want his input into the pick because Licht is absolutely awful at drafting.

  13. CChead Says:

Joe….why don’t you just ask the Glazers their opinion?

  14. Pete I Says:

Bruce “Lack of preparation H – Didn’t miss coaching but why not” Arians

sure why not monitor him after all “given his health issues in the past, and at this stage of his life and career he and his family have to assess the situation on a yearly basis. That is always and has to be first and foremost. ”

    Makes sense.

Jameis “meaningless stats” Winston America’s QB may actually cause illness given how he plays.

Winston’s next turnover will be his 93rd since 2015

Not to mention his 28 interceptions in 2 years at FSU

  15. miken Says:

Bruce will be back next year along with jason and Jameis Cutler to do it all over again.

  16. Allbuccedup Says:

Vea, White and Whitehead young pretty solid. David good solid veteran. Sign Barrett or Paul not both too much money. Sign a top free agent db there are 3 or 4 available. Draft a top line defensive lineman to replace Suh. Draft an edge rusher to compliment the other side. Thats a total of eight players surely you can find 3 other players on the team to field a decent defense.

  17. Todd Says:

Everyone thinking BA will be gone after this season are certifiably retarded. Clinically dumb.

    Ankle biting basement dwellers.

  18. Wombat Says:

Ruining 3 coaches careers is quite the resumé Jameis!!!!!!

  19. tmaxcon Says:

jameis is so horrible it’s amazing climate crisis has not escalated and we might as well throw the homeless crisis on him too…. meanwhile this fine young man owns every franchise QB record has 2 receivers in the top 10 knocking on top 5 and has to compete against opponents and his own defense every week…. jameis has never had a nfl caliber offensive line nor defense. bucs defenses while jameis has been on the roster are some of the worst the nfl has seen in history..

meanwhile dumbarse bucfan is pounding their chest of a highly ranked run defense in a passing league….

this team has far more issues than jameis from the owners to the janitors it’s the most embarrassing sports franchise on earth but you dumbarses keep tossing it all on this fine young man out of jealously and hidden agendas…

bucs have never ever won consistently in franchise history long before jameis was born and they will continue to embarrass the sport of football long after jameis is successful elsewhere….

bucfans are almost as embarrassing as glazers and the on field results produced every year…. You really can not expect anything else out of small town public school educated rednecks.

  20. Jim Says:

You can’t just dismiss Canfora’s comments; he’s got better inside info than any of us…

  21. Buczilla Says:

I despise the Panthers and Cam but when healthy Cam is a far better player than Jameis. I’d pay him in a heartbeat if he got released and was healthy. Andy Dalton? No thanks, I’d rather have Jameis then that dude. After 5 years Jameis has yet to prove he is worth starting young qb money. It’s time to move on and why the hell is Licht still the gm?

Draft a cheap qb, let him learn and build the team around him. It’s working for the Chiefs and Texans. That formula worked pretty well in Seattle too.

  22. NPRSageBoy Says:

you are absolutely delusional simple as that…. being a blind follower is so sad and pathetic….. the only ankle biting basement dwellers are our beloved buccaneers 8 out of 10 with 9 well on it’s way…..

buccaneers will never ever win a meaningful game again…. period! anyone who believes otherwise is a dumbarse…

  24. Pewter power Says:

At least one of you get it….despite all your complaining and useless talk no one considers your opinion seriously in the bucs organization, if they did we’d probably be even worse off. Unless BA decides to retire everyone will be back including Winston and Licht so cry about it no one important cares what you think….we’ve had one of the worst defenses since 2015 yet you want to keep looking at the quarterback as if changing that will solve anything, it’ll solve just about as much as your complaining.

  25. tmaxcon Says:

i have been saying for months BA will not make it more than one year. hopefully, he goes down on-field watching vh3bust chasing receivers before season ends… just another washed up has been fleecing the dumbest owners in the sports world….

  26. Allbuccedup Says:

Last year Jason Licht was rated the 31st worse GM in the NFL second only to the Jets GM who by the way got fired. That says it all. Why didn’t the Glazers offer John Lynch the job a few years ago oh thats right they had the idiot Licht.

  27. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Jameis Winston = aka….. COACH KILLA!!!!!

  28. Aceofaerospace Says:

Talk about a coach killer. Maybe after season 10, Jameis will learn how to hit a receiver in stride on the deep ball more that 10% of the time.

  29. Kobe Faker Says:

“JBF like other insiders like myself know

that the Glazers never fire any HC with 3 more guaranteed years in their contract

The Glazers will demand changes (replace OC) if the team wins less than 5 games

The Glazers will address their demands thru Jason Gump because they are scared of Grandpa Smurf when he gets red

If Granpa Smurf plays hardball. there might be a negotiated separation. However Kobe believes the Glazer boys will wilt but demand next year will be the final year without improvement”

    The Whistleblower

  30. tmaxcon Says:

    Pewter power

please explain to me how this minor league franchise could be worse off

8 out of 10 basement titles with number 9 knocking on the door

Not a single first round pick since sapp has worked out (2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds bust at an alarming rate as well)

Not a single meaningful game played in 12 years

Not a single meaningful game won in 17 years

Not a single good regime hire since whyce built dungy the clowns defense

6 playoff wins and 1 fluke championship in 42 years is pretty damn sad pal

last good decision a glazer made was firing dungy the clown

so I ask again how can it get worse when you already own the worst winning percentage in pro sports and have not competed at a nfl level in decades??????

Please I eagerly await your response of how it can get worse…..

  31. Deez days Says:

It’s coming to fruition… before this season started I said the many options that’s gonna happen …, I noted Bucs would win 1-2 games … litch would be fired and Arians would retire again … regardless of the defense is playing like crap it’s time the offense set the standard and this is where the true leaders are on … because offense is our strength … and when that’s the case the QB can not turn the ball over … had jameis not fumbled that ball we could have drove and scored and the outcome would be different

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    JW IS A BUST!!!!!

we all know his MO by now….

he’ll suck right up until week13….

then when theres nothing to play for and we’re sitting pretty in the draft, JW will win 2 of the next 3 games knocking us out of position to draft an elite player….

just like he did with bradley chubb….just like he did last year….

then folks will say he played well the last 3games of the year, lets resign him….lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  33. TOM Says:

The Bucs don’t need to draft a QB in the first round of the draft. First round needs to be an OT & maybe even the second depending how the draft goes. QB maybe in the 3rd or 4th. This of course is if they sign JW to a one year deal or cut ties & bring in a vet QB. (Dalton or Rivers?) Need to sign a vet CB.To make this even better it would help a lot if loser Licht isn’t doing the drafting. They also need to sign Nassib, Barrett & even JPP. Get cap help by releasing Hargreaves, Suh, Dotson & Perriman for starters.

  34. Sharthappens Says:

Dream play this weekend. JW runs out of the pocket and towards the Bucs team sideline. He gets horse collared and rips his knees up and at the same time taking out Arians on the tackle.

  35. Mort Says:

Extend Jameis after this year, sign a veteran FA corner, franchise or sign Shaq, try to get JPP and Suh back at reasonable prices, and regardless draft another couple D-Linemen and a future RT.

    And cut Hargreaves.

    Go Bucs.

  36. DBS Says:

Max. You don’t even know what a redneck is. 99% of the people in the area down there are transplants. You don’t even know what the area looks like now do you?

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Arians has a lot left to prove to me, but I get the impression he has a plan in place for a new QB already. He’s just giving Jameis all the rope he needs to have a fair chance.

I would not be surprised if RG4 gets a shot in a few games…if things don’t change.

  38. Sleepy903 Says:

Buczilla you stated it worked out for KC, Seattle and the Texans. 2 of those teams made the playoffs the year before they drafted their QB’s Mahomes got to sit a year behind Alex smith. Wilson was the missing piece, The D was there and Lynch was their.

Tampa has non of that going for them. No clear vision no clear direction and what makes it worse we are in a division with 3 coaches and QB combos that have all played in a Superbowl We could probably get a bridge QB in here but at what cost. Still a lot of holes to fill. If we are going to draft a QB priority number 1 should be investing in protecting him. Priority number 2 is make sure we have a Dline that can get consistent pressure to hide our weak secondary.

  39. Mike Johnson Says:

Arians gets another yr along with Jameis. If they have the same losing record this time next year? Then its time to hire an..International House Cleaning Service. Include the Glazers in that cleaning also. Put pressure on them to sell the team to somebody who actually cares about football.

  40. Bucsfanman Says:

This franchise has been mired by poor leadership since its inception. For a brief moment in time, Malcolm Glazer showed fans what leadership looked like. It has not been seen since.
Whether Arians can turn around this team is irrelevant so long as he has to “get permission” from this GM. And, this GM won’t be fired (strangely enough!) by this apathetic ownership group. See where this is going?!
Arians is up against years of poor roster management and drafting. He’s being asked to polish a steaming, runny turd! And, he’s being asked to do it with no money and more questions than answers at most every position outside of WR.

  41. Bucs 14 Says:

Jaymiss is not a franchise qb, granted, but he is not the heart of the problem on this team. The heart of the problem for this organization is to be found in the front office. The rot starts with the Glazer boys. They either do not understand how to build a winner, or they really don’t care to build one. IMHO I feel they only care as long as they can turn a profit on the franchise. As long as we the fans keep paying our hard earned money to watch this mediocre team play, plus what we spend on concessions, they Glazer boys won’t notice there is a problem. It’s a Bucs life!

  42. Buccfan37 Says:

Fans are displeased with the results year after year as no change seems forthcoming. Winston, BA and Licht are knotted together with only HC being changed regularly while producing the same results. This repetition stinks and you have to be a diehard fan to suffer through it. A Bucs fan is a long suffering NFL fan.

  43. Jmarkbuc Says:

So if BA gets fired or quits…

We’re left with Bowles as HC, or God forbid, Leftfoot?

Unless this thing gets burned down, we’re screwed for years…still and again.🤯🤯

  44. lambchop Says:

If BA has any pride, he’ll come back no matter what happens at QB. How would his legacy be after this train wreck? And with this season going the way it is, a lot of his staff will be hard to hire if BA leaves.

Jameis being the starting QB next year is on Jameis. If he flounders the rest of the season away, why would a coach in their right mind want him back?

Everyone needs to play for pride and a chance to get better for next year. There are FAs that will certainly leave if the season finishes on a sour note.

To hell with the draft position. We are losers, plain and simple. It’s time to win at all costs even if it is only to build the confidence of this organization. Without that, a top 5 draft pick isn’t going to change much.

  45. lambchop Says:

The Bucs have had more luck picking outside of the top 10 anyway. A top 10 pick comes with too much hype, pressure, and risk.

  46. Justanothersadbucsfan Says:

Max ….said their blaming this fine young man…blaahaaaha…..hes a turd off the field too.

  47. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Lambchop

“ And with this season going the way it is, a lot of his staff will be hard to hire if BA leaves.”

I can think of one GM who will rehire and promote some of them.

  48. Tye Says:

God forbid The Bucs force their fans to suffer another season of Jameis’ incompetence…

  49. Oregonbucsfan Says:

“meanwhile this fine young man “….Tmax
Sorry Max, you lost me at that line even tho I agree with most of what you say today.
I went to college in California for 6 years and I never saw ANYONE stand up on a table and shout an obscenity. Did he not do that? Really?

  50. Ndog Says:

Jameis is a top ten QB in this league bottom line, period end of story.

  51. Kord Says:

Having 3 off this roster will solve a lot of problems

  52. MattBucs Says:

I have been reading some of these comments and I truly do not understand how most people are willing to get rid of Jameis and would support bringing in Andy Dalton or Rivers!!!! Sure, lets get rid of a turnover prone qb and replace him with other turnover prone qbs! that makes a lot of sense… this team needs to revamp the secondary and the o line, address those issues, and then maybe the Bucs will have a winning season
