Blitzes Don’t Get Home

October 7th, 2019

Remember the theory that Bucs blitzers were going to be flying at quarterbacks and wreaking all kinds of havoc and result in taking down quarterbacks?

The following might offer a pre-Halloween scare:

Outside of Shaq Barrett, the Bucs have just two sacks: one by Will Gholston, who isn’t blitzing, and one from Carl Nassib.

What about those nickel blitzes fans heard about? M.J. Stewart and Sean Murphy-Bunting have zero quarterback hits and “The Moneybacker,” Deone Bucannon barely sees the field.

Lavonte David was going to revive his pass rushing days, right? Joe’s not throwing shade at David, he’s had a solid season. Joe’s just wondering about the state of the Bucs pass rush and whether the Bucs have the talent to be execute what Todd Bowles is serving up.

As Joe wrote last week, Barrett returning to earth was/is inevitable. Somebody has to step up and nobody did yesterday.

‘But that interior pressure, Joe? Ndamukong Suh and Vita Vea are animals.’ Yes, they are good football players, but can someone explain to Joe why Suh has a ton a work to do in order to avoid the lowest season-sack total of his career and an un-Suh-like total of quarterback hits?

Bowles has a genius reputation. So Joe’s eager to see how Bowles works around soft corners, a rookie safety and pass rushers and blitzers who aren’t getting home. Maybe Devin White really is the savior linebacker the Bucs made him out to be?

When Teddy Bridgewater lights you up, it’s because he’s comfortable. Very comfortable.

  2. 813bucboi Says:

ask marshon lattimore how he can lock down 1 of the best WRs in the game with no pass rush or no pressure on the QB….

since everyone thinks CB’s can cover for 12sec and make 10picks a game….lol…

eli apple is the weak link in the saints defense but you’ll never know because they get after the QB consistently…….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  3. 813bucboi Says:

first 2 games pass rush as a whole not just shaq was decent and the secondary played well…..

pass rush outside of shaq has been suffering the past 3games and the secondary has suffered as well….

pass rush and secondary go hand in hand….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  4. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

The blitzes will never get home if the cornerbacks can’t cover. The defense has a talent problem. I have said it for years, it is not the scheme it is the players. We can’t rush 4 and get pressure, and we can’t blitz and play man.

    Says who?

    Papa Smurf?

Surely not all of New York

Bellichick believes in taking away your strengths and getting beat only by the 2nd and 3rd option

Bellickick would have doubled Thomas and had quinn or Cook beat us”

Jason LICHT has blood on his hands.
He is the one who passed on Defensive Lineman and Edge rushers giving us a Aguayo-Gay parade of cornerbacks that all suck….. Devin White well TBH nobody really can know so soon wether he will be what he needs to be and that’s a BLUE-CHIP all pro MLB…..

I mean bro…., this guy better be the second coming of Derrick Brooks or it was not the right pick!

The only thing we have got from (TRASH LICHT) LICHT MY BALLS loser

    @813bucboi

Maybe they just need another 10 more coaches for the secondary!!!!!!!!!!! Why are you complaining about players?????? I thought they just needed great coaching?????? you have been saying how there has been enough talent to win?????? Don’t change your tune again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there is a leadership void that starts at the very top and goes all the way down to the janitors.

I DON’T CARE HOW MANY WASHED UP COACHES YOU BRING IN THE RESULTS WILL BE THE SAME WITH THE GLAZERS LACK OF LEADERSHIP AND HAVING NO DESIRE TO FIELD A COMPETITIVE PRODUCT YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT….

Easiest job in sports is buccaneers head coach / gm… No Fanbase, No expectations, No Accountability and Owners who are content with tv money and losing…

  9. DBS Says:

All the people that have been blamed and are gone are laughing . Even Payton was laughing on the sidelines after the trick play. This team Still gives up the same number of points.

Total team loss… Ddidn’t play well, qb didn’t play well, line was average and got some bad calls. Now have the hot panthers

i said it yesterday if the fans in the bay area had any heart and pride they would help the team move to london this week permanently not just for the game… clearing the glazer stench from the bay area will get the birds chirping and prevent red tide….

Its call good coaching staff watching film and adapting.

  14. Ndog Says:

I have been giving Licht the benefit of the doubt due to the last coaching staff, but today after watching the secondary and OL it is hard to be positive about the results of his drafts.

Of course the ugly loss encourages the coward Realist to open his mouth…

  16. Ndog Says:

Don’t look now but Jameis has a better than 2 to 1 TO ratio this year and guess what we are still losing the same we did before. But it was all his fault right guys? CLUELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Tmax, today I find that I cannot disagree with you. I am so tired of this same ol chit, different Monday, year after year crap

  18. Lamarcus Says:

Can’t blitz when you have Vh3 out there in backfield. Not just us. If Vh3 was on any team and their coach plays him your defense is in shambles.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

    realist

so nice of you to come out of hiding….

not complaining about players or coaches…..

we needed a total team effort to beat a team that came a bad call away from playing in the SB…..

we have the talent and coaches to finish better than 5-11…..something dirk couldnt figure out…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!

  20. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Licht and this year arians are to blame for the lack of talent overall on this team, I have stated on here for the past 3 years it is not coaching it is the terrible players. Licht still here, still grabbing bad players..von bell and kamara should have been bucs. and jameis needs to be told or just needs to throw it to evans, throw evans open, evans will catch the ball. Also either OJ is a top 10 TE or he is not and is another long line of licht busts

  21. 813bucboi Says:

    lamarcus

    thats incorrect…..

you cant continue to blitz when the blitz isnt getting home….

doesnt matter if we have pat p on 1 side and ramsey on the other….if the QB has all day to throw, they’ll get picked apart too…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  22. BucEmUp Says:

They would have gotten home if our coaches let rdb’s press in Jam. Show many passes completed that were short quick jump-offs on Slants and screens that could have been easily prevented by simply hitting the receiver at the line and throwing off the expected timing by the quarterback not once have rdb’s been physical at the snap they always backpedal and never interrupt the timing. If the offense that our defense is facing is countering our Blitz with quick releases I don’t understand why they’re not playing More Physical at the line of scrimmage. Also sometimes A team’s best defense is their offense, unlike last week against the Rams the saints were not going to give James time to push the ball down the field yet for the first 40 minutes of the game Byron Leftwich, just like he said he would in his pressure a couple weeks ago, said it wasn’t about what the defense was showing it was about execution and he continued to force the ball downfield on deep vertical routes rather than taking what the defense was giving him. Those six acts are on left which not on Janus every receiving option was going deep and vertical all game and when they weren’t it was a run right up the middle two or three times in a row. Opposing defenses are going to take note that left which is exactly like Mike Smith and he will not adapt or change his game playing week to week he’s going to do the same thing all the time Ariens needs to take over

  23. Tbbucs3 Says:

When was the last time the Bucs beat a backup QB?

    Honest question.

  24. Alanbucsfan Says:

What a bunch of chicken littles

    Refs made some bad calls
    Evans didn’t show up
Saints made plays in 2nd half, Bucs didn’t
    It’s 1 game
    Beat the Panthers

  25. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “Mr Tmaxcon

    My Dad and I

While everyone is in London we will change all the locks. They have given the keys to 1Buc place to Ira Kaufman to safely hold. We will take him to a skanky strip joint and get him drunk”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  26. tmaxcon Says:

    son

i am no ira fan but he can’t be any worse than the glazers….

  27. Bird Says:

    Ndog

I think Jameis is playing better then any other season
2 to 1 td to turnover is a great sign. He made some bad throws and we got lucky on more then a few INTs that were called off.
Oline had a bad game. So did Jameis. Shoot the whole team crapped the bed.
However , You could tell in those first few throws he was off. And who knows how he looked pregame. Analysts said same thing. And play calling became heavy run so coaches noticed too.

But you bring up his stats when I thought stats didn’t matter
And the stats were ok because of one final drive in garbage time. He was at 100-130 yards before final drive And the crappy offense didn’t help out the crappy defense. It goes both ways.

It’s ok to criticize a player.
    Enough with your crying

  28. Defense Rules Says:

What a short memory the Tampa Bay media & fans have. When Tony Dungy was hired, he brought with him an excellent coaching staff but really had a LOT of work to do to mold a TEAM. Offense was meh & defense was fairly young (especially the Secondary). That 1996 team started off 1-8 before finally getting their collective act together & finishing 5-2 on the year for a 6-10 record. Next year, with a year of experience under their belt, they improved to 10-6 & made the playoffs based on … DEFENSE. Stagnated some in 1998, but made the playoffs in 1999, 2000 & 2001, thanks to our Top-10 DEFENSE.

Jon Gruden inherited that team in 2002 & took us all the way to the Super Bowl that year, based on our … DEFENSE. The following 2 years were disastrous however, as both our offense & defense slipped considerably (thanks to some personnel changes?). Bucs went from a 12-4 record in 2002 to a 7-9 record in 2003 to a 5-11 record in 2004. Same coaches, but some different personnel. It wasn’t until 2005 that our DEFENSE improved again, and so did our record … to 11-5 and a trip to the playoffs.

DEFENSE has historically been our identity. That’s predominantly where we spent a lot of our draft capital … building our DEFENSE (starting in 1993 to about 2000). Guys like Lynch, Sapp, Brooks, Upshaw, Marcus Jones, Abraham, Barber, Singleton, Kelly, Duncan, Jackson … all home-grown. It took time and patience, but the results were worth it. We’re building a similar DEFENSE right now, with players like Vea, White, Whitehead, Edwards, Davis & others. The POTENTIAL’s growing, but we’re not there yet. It’ll take time to get everyone on the same page, just like it did back in 1996. Importing more and more FAs isn’t the answer. But home-grown is.

  29. tmaxcon Says:

    D r

Dungy failed let it go….. losing is Tampa’s identity nothing else pal…. nice try though

  30. Dapostman Says:

We understand that without a pass rush passes are going to be completed. The issue is these DB’s weren’t even in the same zip code when the balls were caught.

It’s like the NBA where the coach is telling his team to make the other team take contested jump shots. Did you see any real contested catches yesterday? It was like leaving Ray Allen alone in the corner for a 3. That is not a recipe for success.

You must contest the catch more. No more gimme layups DB’s. If the other team makes the catch you tip your cap but Jesus make them earn it!

  31. TOM Says:

tmaxcon: Boy did you hit the nail on the head. I was going to say pretty much what you said about the whole organization but thanks to you I didn’t need to.

  32. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Defense Rules

Defense is not longer in the DNA of Bucs football. It’s was a totally different game back in the 90s and early 2000s and ever since offenses have relied more on the passing game the Bucs have been unable to adjust.

As since the Bucs got new uniforms in 2014, The Bucs defense has been utterly atrocious aside from a fluke 5 weeks in 2016. Doesn’t matter who the DC aid you cannot work with the lack of secondary talent that Jason Licht trots out there.

  33. Tbbucs3 Says:

I hate to say it but that Panthers win was a fluke. If Kyle Allen was playing he would of blown us out of the water. This team is a bad football team.

We’re just not Redskins, Dolphins or Jets bad and that’s about all we can say.

  34. unbelievable Says:

Did LVD even play yesterday? I saw him make 1 tackle.

    One.

  35. unbelievable Says:

@Tbbucs13 – you could say the same about the Giants game though. Those games could easily be inverted but either way we’d be 2-3.

  36. Mike Johnson Says:

I told you all after game 2..Enjoy what little pass rush we have. Because good teams can negate blitzes entirely. You saw them Saints. And you witnessed their Defensive front 4..far superior to ours. We still can finish 8-8. But we gotta go into the bye at 3-3. Go exclusively O and D line next draft and free agency. That is..IF..the Glazers will get off any money.

  37. Defense Rules Says:

tmaxcon … Tony Dungy didn’t fail at all. He built a quality organization & set the stage for Gruden. Without the defense that Tony & Monte built, Bucs wouldn’t have even sniffed the Super Bowl. And admittedly the game has changed, forced mostly by the rules changes that now favors offense much more than it ever did. BUT … great defense never goes out of style. It’s quite obvious to me that Jason Licht has no clue how to build a great defense, but that’s OK because he doesn’t know how to build a great offense either. His legacy IMO will be special teams.
