Another Rebound

September 16th, 2019

It’s very trendy in NFL circles to bash and pile on Cam Newton now as being a totally washed up and broken down quarterback.

Joe has to laugh. If we’re to accept that, then what does it say that Newton, without a running game Thursday, had the Panthers marching to within inches of a game-winning drive against the Bucs?

Welcome to the roller coaster ride of the NFL season. Joe loves every wacky minute of it.

One thing Newton did well Thursday was burn Vernon Hargreaves early in the game with a 44-yard bomb to Curtis Samuel. It was 1-on-1 coverage and Hargreaves got torched. It reminded Joe a lot of when Hargreaves got lit up on the same side of the field against Pittsburgh in the preseason opener. Very similar play, also in the first quarter.

But in both games Hargreaves shook it off and rebounded quickly, further evidence of the confidence with which he is playing, a confidence that’s hopefully building and that will drive his game to new heights.

Joe’s not concerned about the Bucs getting attacked deep against the Giants on Sunday, but Joe does suspect offensive coordinators are going to see the deep ball as a weakness of this revitalized Tampa Bay defense.

Our offense has to wake up soon or else we’ll be in some hurt soon. Our defense has been visibly improved but this can’t be sustained with some big offenses coming up in NO and LAR. Even without Brees.

Hargreaves had 12 tackles including the game saving one, but he gave up alot of catches too and a few first downs on slants giving the infamous 10yard cushion.

  2. DB55 Says:

    Lol love it.

The sharp difference between the two joes. This joe gets it. On the previous article below this article the other joe somehow believes Bowles is doing something.

I’m not DC and yet I saw in camp that white wasn’t ready and vh3 needed to be cut to make room for a RT.

Cam gifted us that game, couldn’t hit a barn that night and he still torched VH3.

Stop celebrating a lucky win. There’s a lot of work to be done still if we want to get out of the cellar.

  3. Cannon Says:

Our blitz game has to be effective to counter the long ball.

  4. BucDan Says:

    Stop celebrating a lucky win.

    WHAT!???

    NAH! I’m Good.

Only stats that matter at the end of the day are Ws and Ls. C’mon DB!

  5. Colonel Angus Says:

I wonder if other fans don’t celebrate their wins over the Bucs, you know when our QB gifts them wins? Who cares how you win, style points don’t matter.

  6. LargoBuc Says:

DB55 I agree to an extent. Our D deserves credit for shutting down the run in dominant fashion.

  7. SC Bucs Fan Says:

I think part of the problem was the narrative Newton couldn’t throw deep and VHIII believed that until he got burned.

  8. FR Says:

I agree with DB55 we could have easily been 0-2. Yes D is much better but how long do you think it will take for OC to realize that we blitz on 3rd ever time. How sad is it that sport outlets speak more about Cam wardrobe and lack of game play then the Bucs win.

  9. SC Bucs Fan Says:

DB55 I’m so happy I don’t look at the Bucs like you. You even see Ws as Ls. Must be a horrible way to live life.

  10. LargoBuc Says:

Colnoel Angus in those divisional games, it dosent matter how. A win is a win and is celebrated.

  11. Rayjay1122 Says:

DB55, your opinions are beyond reason. Lol

  12. mark2001 Says:

Great coaching and hard work from everyone. They have all “bought in”. These young guys will occasionally play like the rookies a number of them are. What else would you expect? But Bowles defense doesn’t look like a “one trick pony”. As long as all three aspects of the team play hard and function well enough to keep winning, and keep moving forward, we should be fine.

  13. orlbucfan Says:

Good lawd, the team is still adjusting to a BRAND NEW HEAD COACHING STAFF! Some real dumb azzes on here!

  14. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “but Joe does suspect offensive coordinators are going to see the deep ball as a weakness of this revitalized Tampa Bay defense.”

Fair point Joe. I’m guessing that’s also why BA & TB drafted TWO CBs with height AND speed this spring (SMB & Davis). Right now TB apparently feels that the more experienced VHIII, even though not as tall or fast, gives us a better chance of winning. One of those other two will catch up soon enough I’m sure.

@DB55 … “I’m not DC and yet I saw in camp that white wasn’t ready and vh3 needed to be cut to make room for a RT.”

I agree with part of your statement DB55. You’re not a DC.

  15. Slugglife Says:

I’ll just celebrate the win. You never know how many you’ll get.

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

Yeah, it wasn’t a pretty win, perhaps even “lucky”. What I will say through two games though is that we actually look like a competitive football team.
Make no mistake, there is a TON of stuff we need to clean up, penalties for instance, catching the football for another! Still, we beat the Panthers. A feat we haven’t pulled off in quite a while.

  17. gracelivin Says:

I see a lot of people harping on VH3 for all the catches that were made against him. He played a good game against there #1 receiver. Most if not all the catches were made with a zero coverage blitz on, so the slant is usually open due to no linebacker presence in the middle, often times these catches go for long yardage gains/TD because the CB is trailing by to big a margin to make the tackle. On most of the plays against VH3 he was right on the spot tackling for no gain, yes he may have been able to break up a few more but I was not disappointed in him giving up 4-7 yds when the stinking Panthers needed 10+.

  18. VA Tom Says:

I don’t know that we were that good or Carolina isnt much of a competitor again this season. I watched the Saints game and the Falcons game. I couldn’t help but walk away impressed with the level of play I saw on both sides of the ball. The Rams, the Saints, The Eagles and Falcons all looked crazy hard working. These guys looked stout. They looked hungry and mean. I LOVE the Bucs. I want to see a good season. After week two it just feels like we arent on the same level of talent or drive as those other teams. I’ve got my fingers crossed. Week 3 is where I think real football starts to happen. I guess this Sunday will be telling. But even that’s against the Giants. And they’re not a whole lot different than Carolina in my book.

    Dear optimistic and pessimistic persons,

While you were arguing whether the glass was half full or half empty Thursday night, Todd Bowles drank it.

Good game for Hargreaves, first time in awhile we have gotten to see him produce that in back to back games. Was not perfect, has things to work on. Like we all do. Keep it going!

Wright, I wish we could ax the ” infamous 10yard cushion” from our play book and design too. We always allow them to many yards on those plays. Especially on those pesky quick slant routes. That went from 10 yard cushion to a 12-14 yard cushion at the snap, and more after the pass is caught. Sure appears difficult to make that tackle when it is 3rd & 8.

    Go! Bucs!

  21. Slugglife Says:

    That there above.

  22. K2 Says:

I agree that we have been beat a few times on well thrown deep passes. Still a huge improvement from last year,…getting beat on short, deep, and intermediate routes. A close analyze of the Bucs defense, last year, from start to finish indicates the only time they weren’t giving up big play was half-time. In fact, last years defense gave up zero points during intermission…and that was only because of Smith superior coaching.

  24. Slugglife Says:

I dont really care how depleted a team is, whether their QB is injured, if their coaches have diarrhea.

Nobody’s record had an asterisk when They beat us. Apparently we are the only fans who asterisk our wins. Go figure.

  25. K2 Says:

I guess that is because he wrote the book titled..”You Win in the Locker Room First”.

  26. bucnole Says:

Aikman commented during the broadcast how we were telegraphing the blitz. That has to get cleaned up for sure. Like others have said – Any good OC can figure that out now that there is tape out there.

  27. WestChap Says:

Kitties were a great team win, warts and all. Even the Niners loss was a “good” one for the D. We shall see how Giants game goes… if the D is truly fixed, we should contain Barkley and drive Manning to the bench. And if the O continues the week 2 trend, we should win by 2 or more scores way before the 4th quarter.

  28. WestChap Says:

Bucnole, Aikman said he knew blitz was likely coming but had no idea where it was coming from given the variability built into the scheme. I don’t think tape will help anybody scheme for the unpredictability of the pressure or the sheer power of Vita and Suh. This D looks like the real thing.

  29. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @DB55,

are you and Realist hanging out together, sharing that Koolaid he makes? I have never seen you write something so off:

“…vh3 needed to be cut to make room for a RT.” AND “Stop celebrating a lucky win.”.

Bucs fans don’t often have anything to celebrate, but seeing what the 49ers did this week provides even more evidence that Bowles is doing something very good. Enjoy it while we can sir!

  30. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

did hargreaves mess up on that play coverage wise? it seemed he was staying on that side of the field and then other guys were playing man

  31. Defense Rules Says:

Dusthty … That might’ve been. I only saw the play once (live on TV) but it looked like VHIII figured out a moment too late that the WR wasn’t going to pull up … he was going deep all the way. Looked like VHIII pivoted too late trying to stay with him and lost probably a couple of steps in the process. Didn’t see any over-the-top safety help either. Had Cam thrown that ball just a tad deeper Panthers would’ve had a TD because VHIII wouldn’t have caught him. BUT … he didn’t, and that’s all that counts. Football’s a game of inches.

  32. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

DR…..right on, sometimes the bucs need a little dumb luck and it was a heck of a tackle on a top 5 rb in the league by vh3 on the last play of the panthers drive

  33. DB55 Says:

My bad. I forgot who I’m talking to sometimes.

    Please celebrate!!!

  34. 813bucboi Says:

    DB55

    we’re dead wrong….lol….

we could easliy be 2-0 with a good game from our QB…..

every CB in the league gives up deep passes….what matters is how many per game they give up and if they result in TD’s…..

VHG gave up 1 deep pass, 12tackles and NO TD’s…..lol….what else do you want from him?…lol….

you talking about cutting VHG for a RT….lol….and who do you want starting in his place?…dean?(who’s already hurt?)….ryan smith in another 2 games?….SMB, who couldnt beat out VHG or MJ?……

if you expect him to give up 0 catches the entire year then you’re foolish…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  35. 813bucboi Says:

    DB55

so you didnt celebrate when we lost to the 9ers….

so you didnt celebrate when we won vs GMC…..

    do you even like football?…lol….

looks like we’ve found @realist long lost lil sister……lol….

    stop b!tching!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  36. stpetebucsfan Says:

The season is far too young to make any definitive judgements.

However most seasons evolve and a few surprise teams in both directions…good and bad emerge.

IF…IF…the first two weeks are any indication the Bucs and the Niners may be two of the improving teams ready to break out a bit.

Carolina is not chump change…they could have very easily whipped a tough Rams team.

Sunday will tell me a lot. This is a classic Buc trap game…we are playing well…the Giants are not…and they have question marks and their fans have happy feet at the most important position…QB. Odds are we’ll face a vet who is over the hill or a young kid getting his first NFL experience. Saquon rushes for 150 yards and a TD but it won’t be enough as the Buc offense finally begins to really click…including our TE’s!

We SHOULD win this game. That’s our first test…can we win the games we are supposed to win.

  37. doctor_berto Says:

Hargreaves looked pretty terrible all game outside of the last play. Better not sign him long term.

  38. Lord Cornelius Says:

    “Stop celebrating a lucky win.”

It’s not like we didn’t have bad luck either. And how the h3ll do you call it lucky when your defense doesn’t allow a TD the entire game lol. It’s not like the Panthers fumbled 5 times in the red zone. Our defense kicked their 4ss all night. Shut down Cmac which has nothing to do with Cam sucking after Cmac went off against the Rams.

    1. In the 3rd quarter up 17-12, Perriman drops a TD that would have made it 24-12.

    2. Then Matt Gay missed a FG. If either of those things go right then we basically easily win the game instead of it even coming close.

    3. The safety was a horrible horrible play call that should have never happened. When in obvious run situations the Panthers were getting tackles for loss consistently. Without that Safety it’s an 8 point game at the end instead of 6. Just no safety and a made FG and it’s an 11 point game at the end instead of 6.

    Bad luck goes both ways.

The better team won the game THursday tho. It wasn’t a fluke or lucky. If anything it should have been by a bigger margin.

1 TD allowed by this defense through 2 weeks.

49ers looked pretty damn good against the Bengals too.

But this is Bucs land. Doom and gloom. I’m going to enjoy this week while we don’t have a losing record for once lol.

    GO BUCS

  39. Sleepy903 Says:

    DB55

    Dont celebrate a lucky win?

The NFL is a game of inches. Most wins could be considered lucky.

I’m sure the 49ers fans weren’t saying stop celebrating a lucky win. We just played a QB that’s in a new system that gifted us two TD’s. I’m sure they celebrated and probably also helped to build their confidence which is why they convincingly beat Cincy.

Quit whining and enjoy it. I’m sure if we beat the Giants Sunday you’re going to say stop celebrating wins over teams with winless records smh.

  40. J Says:

DB55, both Hargreaves and White had a tremendous camp per BA and Bowles. You’re a f@$king idiot and still hold that title…of course while you’re holding tmax’s d!ck in your mouth at the same time.

  41. Lord Cornelius Says:

Also forgot ME had a chance to have a TD that ended up being a FG

so in terms of Bucs bad luck

-2 potential TDs dropped (ME & Perriman)
    -a missed FG
-a stupid safety on a bad play call
-the dumb extra timeout call that made it a much more manageable 4th down
-a complete BS call for PI on OJ Howard (forgot about that one)

So yeah not feeling like the Bucs had all the luck in this one at all…

  42. Dan McLaughlin Says:

It wasn’t a game-winning drive. It was a possible take the lead drive. We still would’ve won. The game was never in doubt

  43. DB55 Says:

Omg so much attention I’m flattered.

Rather have Patrick Peterson but that would take a competent gm but wtfdik

  44. DB55 Says:

    LC

My point exactly with all that and the Bucs still won. That’s a lucky win in my book but wtfdik

  45. Lord Cornelius Says:

    “Rather have Patrick Peterson”

    Pretty sure everyone would agree.

I’d rather have Jalen Ramsey + Peterson on the outside and Von Miller + Khalil Mack as edge rushers with Aaron Donald/Suh/Fletchr Cox rotating inside but we can’t all have what we want lol

  46. Asdf Says:

Do people on here understand how the modern NFL works? Top defenses rarely completely shut down teams. The rules have changed to promote offense. Our defense has given up 14 and 12 points the first two weeks. If there was “horrible” play from our #1 CB we’d have given up a lot more points than that.

I feel like expectations are here to have a 2002 defense and that good defenses always force 3 and outs. That can’t happen again with the current rules. The game has changed.

Could our defense play better? Sure. It’s also 2 weeks into a brand new scheme.

The commentary blasting defensive play here is absurd

  48. jmarkbuc Says:

Pretty much gonna have to agree with DB55 on this one

Not ready to make a definitive judgement on D White, but on VHIII I agree.

When we play a QB who can throw, who has a good to great WR corps, we will all know one way or the other.

Our run D is stout, but the secondary is TBD.. C Davis is gonna end up costing us if he doesn’t knock off the penalties.

Look, this D is improved, I mean it doesn’t make you wanna throw up to watch them, like last year but there’s miles to go and we haven’t played anyone yet…

  49. DB55 Says:

    813

Of all people you trying to hate? I can’t believe it.

You know this def looked good bc Cam was off, way fkn off. Now did they slap McCaffery in the face YES thanks to Suh and Vea (night game so he wasn’t dehydrated af)

But come on you think we gonna win consistently with the secondary playing like that? He’ll nah and the complete and utter collapse in the 4th was pitiful. But wtfdik

  50. 813bucboi Says:

    DB55

of all the people ignoring the facts…i cant believe it…lol…

did the secondary give up a TD?…..
did they give an inch when it was needed?….

    NO!!!!!

Thursday proved that we can win the “ugly” games….simple as that…

    GO BUCS!!!!!
