Pierre-Paul Lands On Active/Non-Football Injury List

July 24th, 2019

At least this isn’t a bad sign when it comes to the Buccaneers’ top pass rusher and his healing broken neck.

Jason Pierre-Paul, who racked up 12 1/2 sacks last season and was the dominant force on a deplorable Bucs defense, was designated by the team today for the “active/non-football injury list.”

He counts toward the 90-man roster and can return at any time.

The Bucs had other options that would have been more restrictive on when JPP could return, so maybe, just maybe, this is a positive sign following an evaluation.

Joe suspects the move today is just a formality as the Bucs wait to see how JPP heals over the next 12 months.

No, Joe doesn’t expect JPP to have much, if anything to offer this season, but next season is still a consideration. Pass rushers are hard to find and if JPP can, say, play the final four games this season and look good, then waiting on his return is likely worth it. He is due $12.5 million in 2020, which is peanuts for a stud pass rusher.

    Bubble-wrap him NOW!

Gorilla glue his fractured spine and rub some dirt on it.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

They maybe trying to get him through TC just to keep him fresh. Let’s hope he’s available game one against the Niner’s.

  5. Greg Says:

Cut him now go get the guy the Packers let go

  7. NOSBOS Says:

Like I stated a month ago, the injury is bogus. He’ll play week 1.

  8. Bucsfan951 Says:

Pay him 14.9 million this season for 4 games just to pay him 12.5 million for next season?… Am I missing something? Help me wrap my head around this.

  9. Slugglife Says:

For all the folks that talk about team players- let’s see how much of a team player JPP is. A team player wouldn’t rake his team like this and take all that money knowing his injury was the fault of his own.

In a team player world, he restructures his contract immediately and frees up cap space. But that won’t happen. In the real world, an injury off the job doesn’t get you full pay for a year while you sit at home.

  10. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Paying him to “red shirt” a season while he’s on the wrong side of 30 and has a history of making questionable decisions at best is a fool’s errand. Time to move on for multiple reasons.

  11. Slugglife Says:

Hard to believe he’d be a factor in the last four games, not being in real time football shape. But hey, roughly 3.5 mil a game is good work if you can get it.

Not like we need producers on defense with that money.

  12. Slugglife Says:

Not to mention coming off a fractured neck would make a person a bit gun shy about going head up with a bulldozer RB at full steam. Time to move on. Thanks for the inspired play JPP.

  13. Hodad Says:

If it’s fireworks, or just driving, JPP will find a way to F himself up. He’s more useless to us this year, then Grimes was last year, and that’s saying something. At least Grimes took snaps in games for his 10 mill, JPP won’t this year for 14.5. What a waste, cut him, three fingers, broken neck, he’s done.

  14. teacherman777 Says:

He fought harder in 1 season than GMC than did in 9 years!!

Best season I have seen by a Bus since Ronde retired!!

    JPP is a GOD!

  18. Wesley Says:

Should have used that money elsewhere this team can’t afford to wait for him to come back in December.

  19. Stanglassman Says:

Fan951- I’m can’t tell if you’re serious or not. In case you are: he’d get paid per game played. 14.9m divided by 16 games or 93,125 per game. 4 games played as example, he’d make 3.725 million. I haven’t seen his contact but that’s how it would normally work.

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

JPP should have been cut like a..Bad Habit. Typical Bucs. Holding on to assets which have long lost their value. Hell, I don’t blame JPP though. He;s probably sayin, What? They still gonna keep me around? Move over Sweeny eyes about to take your place. If you guys even think JPP is coming back to even 75% of himself, You smokin some Star trek Sh.. Sure, He’ll be back..and on..and off again until he bleeds his salary dry. When will we ever learn. But I guess, this is what losers do huh?

  21. JA Says:

“No, Joe doesn’t expect JPP to have much, if anything to offer this season …”

Based on what–a medical report or “feeling?”
I’d love see updated empirical data on this injury.
Conjecture should be based on a documented medical report.
Give me a guy holding a degree from one the best medical schools in the world and an oral interview or video of him explaining the JPP injury and I’m a believer in JPP’s chances this year.
    Until then … blah!

  22. Allbuccedup Says:

Past thirty, probably won’t play this year, time to cut your losses.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Surprised that the Bucs didn’t do this much sooner. Still don’t expect to see JPP until 2020. Hopefully Licht is smart enough to limit JPP’s 2019 salary to the initial $7.5 mil and not pay him the additional $7.4 mil. We NEED that to sign a quality veteran Guard & RB prior to Sept 8th.

  24. Jim Says:

    Next time get Pirellis, JPP…

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

Or if they have him back for the Playoffs 🤙🤞💥😂💀📠

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

This is a step to put him on returnable IR. By doing this now, they’ll have to option to bring him back this year…and once they place him on IR his salary and roster spot will not count against the final 53 man roster…so to guys who think we should cut him?

    There is absolutely no need.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Also, there is no salary cap until the beginning of the season. They can sign anyone right now, and figure out the logistics later.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Jonathan Limpchimpi Says
“has a history of making questionable decisions at best…”

He does not have a history like that! Lord, where do you people get this stuff?

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Mike Johnson Says
“JPP should have been cut like a..Bad Habit. Typical Bucs. Holding on to assets which have long lost their value.”

Long past his value??? He got 12 1/2 sacks last year! LOL

And he will not count against the cap this year. Or the final roster…becasue he will be on IR.

Gholston has been held onto for too long. Not JPP. Cut him and save $3,750,000.

  30. Bucsfan951 Says:

@ the glassman: no I’m serious. Isn’t he still getting paid if he’s on the NFI list? Now if the Bucs exercise their right on saying it wasn’t football related and they shouldn’t have to pay him, that’s left to be seen.

  31. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Bonz eye aka Pear Shaped Petey D sez:

He does not have a history like that! Lord, where do you people get this stuff?

Still up to your same antics, eh Petey? Well…before I answer…I hope your elf erotica biz is booming and your granny is still jumping on trampolines. Now…if you’re playing with firecrackers as an elite athlete and single car accidents aren’t the epitome of poor decisions…I don’t know what are. I wouldn’t expect a self appointed Buc insider/cotton candy salesman outta the back of a van to understand.

  32. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“He does not have a history like that! Lord, where do you people get this stuff?”

I believe the NFL explains to rookies that nothing good ever happens after midnight. He should have been home in bed. They also tell them not to explode stuff in their hands.

You can stick a fork in JPP now, he’s done.

    I broke my neck when I was 21 and I couldn’t lift a thing for 5 years.

Ever see a body builder when they suddenly can’t work out? They still consume 8.000 calories a day and gain 300 LBs.

  33. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

12.5 M is peanuts for a pass rusher but with the Bucs luck we will pay him to rehab this year and then he will hold out for a new contract next year.

  34. Bucs55 Says:

Bucs payed him 7 mil already and has not played a down this year if I’m the Bucs I’m trying every way possible to get that money back since it was a non football injury

  35. James Walker Says:

    He will play next year.

  36. bucnole Says:

Put him on the non-active (reserve?) NFI list and we can get the 7.5ish back to sign someone else. Im not a big fan of this wait and see crap – like others I feel it is too big of a risk to “hope” he can make it back. We need players NOW for THIS season.
