Breakout Game = Defensive Barfing

September 30th, 2018

Bucs made him look like Dan Marino.

Bears second-year quarterback Mitch Trubisky came into today’s game with the Bucs with a grand total of nine career touchdown passes.

Today, before fans finished their halftime beers, Trubisky had thrown for 66 percent of his career touchdown passes, six.

In one of the most embarrassing defensive performances in recent history, Trubisky went full-blown Dan Marino and absolutely torched Mike Smith’s defense. Already the worst pass defense in the NFL, Trubisky may have personally etched Smith’s name in Bucs lore as the worst defensive coordinator.

And that says a lot.

It is bad enough if Drew Brees rings up the Bucs defense like a gas meter. It’s also rotten when Ben Roethlisberger lights up the Bucs defense; both of those guys are going to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But when an unproven slug like Trubisky rakes the Bucs defense over the coals, that’s enough!

Joe sure hopes the next Bucs defensive coordinator doesn’t carry the last name “Smith.”

The straw that broke the camel’s back.

We need to either fire Mike Smith or trade for Earl Thomas and any other defender on the block.

  2. Kalind Says:

Ha! It should be done already. This can not be allowed to stand.

  3. NJBucsFan Says:

This guy has a career 77% passer rating but yet out D let him look like Brees and Brady had a love child. It’s obvious Mike Smith has to go.

  4. Stonedbuc Says:

    Fire Smitty and promote Buckner

Also who made the decision to draft vita instead of Derwin?

  5. Wesley Says:

    Fire Licht as well!

  6. Rod Munch Says:

    Who saw this coming?

Oh right, anyone that has watched this Bucs defense since the game in Minnesota last year.

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Completely unacceptable defense by any standard

  8. SchwiftyBuc Says:

This game reminded me of the days when Lovie’s D would get spanked by the likes of Austin Davis and Derek Anderson.

  9. NPRSageBoy Says:

This just in; they are preparing a bust of Trubisky in Canton

  10. TheBucsAnthem Says:

GMC aka Captain Blowout aka CANCER OF THE DEFENSE wasn’t even a factor in the game again

….and of course he did his usual disappearing act

  11. BucEmUp Says:

I called this the day Mike Smith was hired.

LET THIS BE KNOWN…..ANYONE WHO DEFENDS MIKE SMITH IS AN IDIOT….A MORRON ….A DUMBARSE!!!!!!! PLEASE KEEP YOUR EXCUSES TO YOYRSEVES AS IT WILL ONLY MAGNIFY YOUR IGNORANCE!!!!!!

AS I HAVE BEEN CHANTING FOR THREE SEASONS NOW….FIRE MIKE SMITH!!!!!

  12. Rod Munch Says:

Again, don’t fire Mike Smith, promote him to head coach. Not kidding at all. Fire Dirk then get a real DC and let Monken run the offense without Dirk interfering.

Dirk isn’t head coaching material, that is clear, he doesn’t have the temperment, the team is often unprepared, he throws fits, he quits on the team, he’s not a HC. Mike Smith is a head coach, he knows what he is doing as HC, even if he’s completely lost as a DC. Smith would bring stability to the position and you wouldn’t need to go through a rebuild.

Seriously, don’t fire Smith, make him the head coach and dump Dirk.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Marino? Hell they made Trubisky look like Y. A..Title!!!! That was way past disappointing. It was outright embarrassing!! Our secondary looks like a bunch of Junior HS players. FIRE SMITTY. Fire Licht..FIRE KOETER. Start all over …..!!!^!%##

  14. Broy34 Says:

Mike smith just has to go man. No other way around it

  15. BucEmUp Says:

By the way it sure looked like Koetter was calling plays today with his headset on and the players and all the runs up the middle on first down

  16. unbelievable Says:

I said before the Steelers game that every single time a team is struggling to do something, they get right against the Bucs. Every damn season.

Someone search the archives and do an Unbelievable Repost!!!!

This has been true through history going back to the Gruden regime.

Mike Smith should not be allowed back in the building.

    #FireMikeSmith

Someone had to reluctantly put “The Sixteen Million Dollar Man” McCoy on the stat sheet. One of the most embarrassing performances of his career when all eyes were on him.

  19. Tval Says:

Hahahahahahaaaa!! Remember me? Mr “fitztragic” and the bears are gonna “murder” the Bucs? Rhetorical. Don’t worry. Baker mayfield is terrible too..don’t drink the kook aid. 😂😂🤣 now put YOUR FRANCHISE in he game and hush up

  20. TheBucsAnthem Says:

every TRUE BUCS FAN knows that GMC is a cancer and never shows up when he’s needed most

…….. GMC aka Captain Blowout never inspires anyone to play better

It’s okay, atleast GMC got his by stealing 100 Million from the Glazer boys……he hood winked everyone in the organization

  21. Rod Munch Says:

TheBucsAnthem – Not kidding, Mike Smith is a proven head coach who shouldn’t be a DC. Dirk is a proven failure as a head coach and now he’s interfering with the offense again. If you want to win, fix the problem. Dump Dirk, promote Mike Smith, let him run the team – NOT call the defense or offense.

  22. Bucamania Says:

Mike Smith obviously needs to go. Dirk won’t be far behind. Your team was unprepared and quit today. Disgraceful.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Mark Duffner should not be made the Defensive Coordinator. We need someone from outside the organization. No Mark Duffner. Not Buckner.

Promoting from within means keeping the same defensive playbook. If you are going to do that, why fire Mike Smith??????

  24. BucEmUp Says:

Waiting for the daily realist regurgitation….I meant repost

  27. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

The incompetent jason licht who has no clue how to build a team except he thinks its through tight ends, this team has had no identity with licht in control and the record shows, there is no rhyme or reason for this disfunctional franchise

“Dirk is a proven failure as a head coach and now he’s interfering with the offense again.”

I hate to break it to you, Rod, but Koetter has not interfered with the offense at all. Have you listened to his Total Access show?

In it this week, he said that Monk has been calling hte plays from the start, and he does not interfere because having him jump in on the headset would only confuse the players.

Nor does he interfere with Mike Smith.

So, sorry, but you are mistaken. I know you want badly for Todd Monken to be the perfect play caller, but he isn’t. The offense today was all on him. ALL ON HIM.

  31. passthebuc Says:

ok, i have read all the posts this week and you’re all nuts. Call Dungy and make him president of operations. Let him sort it out.

  32. Curse of Gruden Says:

Fire Mike Smith before they get on the plane back to Tampa.

  33. WillieG Says:

I thought bringing in JPP was supposed to get the double teams off McCoy and allow him (McCoy) to be a playmaker?

I thought drafting Vita Vea was supposed to solve the run defense issues as well as fee up McCoy?

I thought signing a bunch of D linemen free agents was supposed to mean more sacks?

I thought David and Alexander were supposed to be Pro Bowl linebackers?

I thought the O line was supposed to be much improved?

I thought the play calling was going to be creative and aggressive?

I thought Mike Smith was supposed to be a defensive genius?

I thought this team had a great, “never quit” attitude?

I thought I was going to be watching Bucs games with Dad, just like old times……but nope, not this year. We don’t watch losers.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And making Mike Smith head coach??? Come on, Rod. You want to reward a failing DC by making him a HC?

    Are you drunk?????

  35. passthebuc Says:

and don’t reply, I already know I’m crazy

  36. Curse of Gruden Says:

    Fire Mike Smith now!!!!!!!

    ——————————————————————————–

Monken was calling the offense today, no Koetter

The bears sat back in zone and coverage to eliminate the long ball and passes and did not blitz the backers much and the lineman dominate

Smith called a BAD game today as a defensive coordinator

As I said before, NO NFL team should have 35 points score on them before a half in a game………it was flat out embarrassing how wide open the bears ran all day long in the secondary……that’s bad coaching and being unprepared when you saw the defense the way they played today.

  40. JimmyJack Says:

The name of the article is keep calm. Dirk is still the coach. He has a 2-2 team and he has a bye week to figure out how to get the team playing better.

This team has a chance to come out with some intensity after the bye. Let’s just see if Dirk can fix our play.

    GOO bucs

  41. LargoBuc Says:

That was just…embarassing isnt a strong enough word. I feel ashamed for my team right now. Its just…ugh.
No heart at all. No spine. No guts. No balls. Worse than last years Minnesota game. Worse than the Arizona game two years ago. Almost as bad as the Atlanta beatdown of ’14. That was just awful. I wasn’t even mad by halftime. I was nauseated.
Koetter has to fire Mike Smith. Send a message and hold Smith accountable for this mess. That might not even be enough to save Koetter at this rate but he might as well go down swinging.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

TheBucsAnthem – Since halftime last week the Bucs suddenly started the Dirk special, which is run up the middle against a stacked line on 1st down – this is after Dirk was saying we MUST run the ball more, despite having no success doing so. I don’t believe for a moment Dirk isn’t telling Monkey what to do, at least at some points. This isn’t the same playcalling as in week 1 and week 2.

Anywho as I said Smith is terrible as a DC, so what, I don’t want him as a DC, I want him as a HC. Gruden would be a terrible DC, so you don’t let him run the defense, you let him be the HC. Mike Smith is a proven head coach, he’s calm, he’s always had the respect of his players and he isn’t an emo like Dirk is.

  43. JimmyJack Says:

Willy……A lot of that potential is still there. The coach doesn’t know how to use it. It falls on Dirk first IMO

  44. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

bucs have chance to win maybe 2-3 games on schedule, matt ryan will have a record setting day nextcgame

  45. JimmyJack Says:

Largo……I was feeling the same way.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…………makes sense except for one thing

MIke Smith was fired from Atlanta because his defense was not doing well there either.

Maybe the Glazers just simply need to clean house at the end of the season???

  47. Bucsdelight Says:

This defense is an embarrassment to National Football.

  48. Rod Munch Says:

TheBucsAnthem – Not saying to make him the HC forever, saying for an in season change. If it works out, great, if not, he’s gone at the end of the year in any case. But I’ve seen enough from Dirk to not think much of him, I’m not sure what he brings to this team.

  49. firethecannons Says:

No reason to keep Mike Smith even another minute, awful display, he has caused us to lose so many countless games. Sooner we get rid of Mike Smith, the sooner the new coordinator can get to work. No reason to keep Smith-he is causing us to lose games.
    FIRE MIKE SMITH NOW

  50. Jeffbuc Says:

If Mike Smith isn’t fired I’m going to act like angry jameis fans(gator fans) and not watch this team anymore. I have never in my life of watching football watch an nfl football teams defense be that bad. The qb had 9 career touchdown passes in 15 games had 6 today. Mike Smith needs to be fired tonight. We have a big enough window to see he is not going to work. Today was embarrassing I am still in awe of what I saw today. It really looked like a d2 school versus Alabama. I think Alabama could have scored 35 against us today. Someone needs to be held accountable or koetter is a joke and lame duck. We made a below average quarterback set Chicago Bears records today. It wasn’t like it was a blown coverage here or there. There was wide open receivers, tight ends, runningbacks, and quarterback running lanes. It wasn’t even competitive. Fire Mike Smith. Something has to happen after a game like that. If dirk doesn’t he doesn’t have any balls and he will be fired along with Smith at the end of year. But why betray your fans and allow this embarrassment of a defense to continue. How long can you let someone be the worst at there job in the world. I do t even know what are defense is. We are not getting pressure and still don’t blitz. We had a gunshy qb we should have lined up with 8 men in the box and blitzed them every down. You can’t let that happen

  51. Mike Says:

Been watching since 86- when my dad and grandfather had season tickets-
Have my picture taken as an 8 year old with Vinny Testaverde at a signing event. I feel I have a fair to good understanding of the pulse of this team. I would bet- More than light or Koetter or even the Glazers. It’s like having a dysfunctional family and intimately knowing their tendencies cycles and mannerisms. Every year I tune in at first to feel out the pulse of the team.

I have to say that I’m thankful for Ryan Fitzpatrick and the offense during the first two weeks. That was really entertaining and I actually had a ton of fun as a fan for a few games.

Didn’t take a 32 year fan to see that the defense was atrocious and lost.
Mike Smith has a good 5 game stretch there a while back. I wonder what he was doing. They seemed to be “communicating.”

Now I will do what I usually do and take most of my attention away from the team and focus on my own life which I at least have a chance to deal in competence.

I will check in later on to see if we are in any sort of playoff hunt. You never know-

This season we’ve seen some real promise and some utter hopelessness.

I vote no confidence for this coach.

    Thanks!

  52. Mike Says:

Staff too- and GM- no confidence-
    Clean house

  53. BucEmUp Says:

Jeff buc I just told my dad and brother n laws the same thing. I’m done if Mike Smith isn’t fired..They w ONT even get my tv ratings. If Mike Smith is not shown the door tomorrow I w ONT watch another game In finished with this crap. There is no excuse to continue with this guy

  54. Tval Says:

Anyone who couldn’t see mediocrity on koetter is woefully incompetent. Seeing his face during a 48-45 win was ASTOUNDING. he looked like he won the super bowl. That was a tell-tale sign of things to come, in the form of passive, pushover defense. Jameis ignites BOTH sides and WONT accept any less

  55. Buccfan37 Says:

I don’t know but my Koetter confident vote over many polls just fell a notch lower.

  56. rrsrq Says:

Had a chance to go get a really good safety in Eric Reid, if he balls out for the Panthers, this is on Licht/Glazers

  57. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

rrsrq, had a futureall pro in derwin james ready to be a buc so ya thats on licht too

  58. lambchop Says:

    @Rod Munch,

Nonsense! This team will not play for Mike Smith. They’re not going to respond to the guy giving up 6 TDs to Trubisky and the worst defense in the league. I think you’re trying to find a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. Dirk Koetter, as long as he doesn’t call plays, can be a de facto HC. He’s shown that he can win, but he’s loyal to a fault by not showing the door to his pal whose defensive schemes have been putrid – for whatever reasons. Good or bad, a HC change mid-season at 2-2 would cause a total meltdown. Fix the defense and we can win with Koetter as HC.

  59. lambchop Says:

    @rrsrq,

As much as I would have pulled the trigger on signing Eric Reid, I think I have WAY more confidence in Whitehead than our rookie CBs. They flat out look lost sometimes, take bad angles, and are a couple steps too slow. Carlton Davis flashes so I’m hopeful he’ll develop when he comes back from injury. With Licht’s track record and plain bad luck, I don’t see him hitting on all 3 though.

Whitehead can develop into a really good S. We got 99 problems, but a S ain’t one. Justin Evans and Whitehead will hold it down.

  60. Rod Munch Says:

lambchop – What? Right now they’re not playing for Dirk – what makes you think they suddenly change because of some new XO’s? What has Dirk done to inspire any confidence in anyone? How many times does the team show up unprepared? How many times do we watch Dirk punt from the opponent 35 in a shootout? Dirk was a great OC and a terrible HC, Mike Smith is a terrible DC and was a great HC. Being a HC and a DC are two completely different skill sets – and we have a very long track record of success for Smith. I mean literally the best move Dirk has made as HC is giving up play calling duties. If that’s all you bring to the table and then you don’t even do that anymore – what do you bring? Not saying to give him an extension – saying let him have the job and let Monken do his job without interference and let’s get back to that aggressive offense we saw before Dirk demanded we run it up the middle for no gain.
