Pressure On

July 26th, 2018

How hot?

Yeah, training camp opens today under the sweaty and steamy skies at One Buc Palace.

There is optimism from some in the air but Simmi Buttah of the Associated Press believes there is a dark cloud hovering around Bucs coach Dirk Koetter these days.

Buttah listed six NFL coaches who need wins this fall or they could be looking for work come January. Among the six coaches Buttah believes are already getting their hindquarters tanned from a hot seat in July is Bucs coach Dirk Koetter.

Koetter also is in a division with two teams with recent Super Bowl appearances (Carolina, Atlanta), and getting past them and the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South, especially with Ryan Fitzpatrick making three starts for Tampa Bay, will be tough.

Joe does not know if Koetter has zoned all of this talk out or not but Joe does believe his assistants understand the gravity of wins this fall.

Joe hates to use the word “urgency” here because the way Joe sees it, every season should be urgent for every coaching staff unless a team is so horrid like the Browns, making a playoff run is simply unreasonable.

But darn if Joe didn’t get the sense talking to coaches during underwear football season that they know their backs are against the wall.

I think if you get rid of Kpetter this year it will be a big mistake. First of all our division is the toughest in football, if last year is any indication. We are still rebuilding. Losing the QB for the first 3 games doesn’t help and IS a distraction, as yesterdays pressers went.
I think if this team plays better, he deserves another year. Constant change is not the answer. If Bill Belichek was available, different story, but other than that stay the course and batten down the hatches….

  2. Mbfists Says:

Any way you look at it it’s one of the toughest divisions he has a better
D line that “should” be able to hold the fort which will give him leeway to take chances on O if he has the balls and isn’t job scared.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Media … “Dear Dirk, you’re on the hot seat this year.”

Koetter … “So’s EVERY NFL coach, what else is new. Next question.”

  4. VA Tom Says:

The Jameis thing sucks, but in reality it isn’t different than if he were hurt. The coache’s job is to win. Kotter and his staff need to win. I believe the organization’s job (starting at the top) is to provide the “good type” of consistency for the staff and players. So I want to see Kotter supported unless the moves he and his staff make are just outright stupid. The Bucs need a regime Era for a decent head coach and GM. Stick with a damn administration for 5 yrs. The Glazers bought into him, now they need to support him. This 2yrs and gone thing has to change except in cases of gross error decision making.

  5. VA Tom Says:

Koetter and “coach’s” stupid phone autocorrect is useless unless you’re a fan of 70’s sitcoms… Welcome Back Kotter… SMDH

  6. Lunchbox Says:

Until we prove otherwise, WE ARE as horrid as Cleveland.

  7. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Lunchbox

As bad as Cleveland lol…. bucs own the worst winning percentage in pro sports…. Cleveland browns are the bronx bombers compared to this franchise.

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

Calling Jim Schwartz, Forrest Gump on line 1….

  9. 813bucboi Says:

not canning dirk in January was the mistake….and no every coach is not on the hot seat…..everyone has pressure to do their job, but only a few coaches have added pressure because they’ve underachieve…..

this team aint still “rebuilding”…lol….we have a solid young core and a very talent depth of players…..this is a playoff team on paper….problem is we don’t have a playoff type of staff…..

each year dirk has been here we’ve added talent, depth and coaches and the results have been underwhelming….imo, the game has passed dirk and smitty by….that 4vert scheme and passive defense is outdated…..

if dirk cant get us to the playoffs this year, then give harbaugh, jim schwarts, marquad manuel, dennis allen a call…..we need a coach in here that has some juice, creativity and a mental toughness……

If the guy had a badass offensive line and a a average secondary I’d say okay there should be some pressure.
As is stands it’s kinda like asking the Greg Billings band to open up for zeppelin in their prime and blow them away

  11. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

This team is loaded with talent this year, and so much so that if we don’t at least have an 8-8 record, in my mind Koetter needs to go.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

dirk has been here 3 years and we still don’t have an identity….that should tell you everything right there!!!!

we’re not a running team nor a team that plays good defense….we are a mentally weak team that can move up and down the field but cant score points with below average special team play…..that is all on dirks shoulders…..

we found out about winstons situation last year….in Nov…..dirk has had more than enough time to create a plan around fitz for 3games while also figuring out how he, smitty and the special teams coach screwed up last year…..and if we go 0-3, guess what, we still have 13games left!!!….wheres all the “fitz went 2-1” folks?…..where all the “dirk is an offensive guru” crowd?…..

  13. Bucsfanman Says:

813- Fitz DID go 2-1! Before you beat me up over who he played, know this; when you’re a back-up QB and you get the call, you play the team in front of you. He simply did his job.
Now, as to the rest, I 1,000,000 % agree that there are no excuses. This team has ample time to gameplan for N.O. with Fitzy at QB.
    It’s 100% on the coaches!

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

There are a million possible outcomes to this season. It won’t simply be the record for Koetter…it will be how the team performs. The instant the Glazers sense his players quit on him they’ll pull the plug.

That hasn’t been the case so far and the team put out a strong effort against NO when there was literally nothing but pride on the line.

Again recall Chucky got fired after two 9-7 records…it was the combo of his players tuning him out…he lost their trust…and the way he finished his last year.

At 9-3 everybody was ecstatic and dreaming of not just the playoffs but a bye.
Then the Bucs went 0 for December losing four in a row and finishing with an incredibly disappointing 9-7.

I do not believe anybody expects Koetter to get fired with a 9-7 result..unless something in the season indicates the Bucs coulda/shoulda done even better.
If Koetter goes 9-3 and then loses the last four….he could end up like Chucky.

I disagree…..dirk has a number he has to hit if he still wants to be the HC….what you brought up was last year…..team continued to fight and play hard(so they say) and he had all sorts of distractions from Irma and HK to injuries and lack of talent and depth……that’s not the case this year…..

if the team fights hard and never quits on dirk but we still end up being 6-10, glazers will clean house…..

I agree….his job is to win and he did just that…..

  17. Wombat Says:

813, if you believe this team is set, then I guess we disagree. This team has zippo chance of making the SB this year. The D line, though on paper looks better, but hasn’t played a snap. The secondary would keep me awake at night if I am playing anyone with a winning record. The O line has 3 out of the 5 players in new positions. We have little starting experience on the RB position… I think we are 2 years away from being a decent team.
Too many questions going into this year to make a push. (not to mention Beckworth may be out and JW3 missing 3 games and still not knowing if his shoulder is 100%) This team will do well if it finishes average at 8-8

  18. 813bucboi Says:

    wombat

didn’t say anything about making the SB…..didn’t say we were set either….

but we do have enough talent to make the playoffs….

looking on paper, if you don’t think we can make the playoffs then, yeah we disagree…..

  19. Kord Says:

Well when you agree to become the head coach of this team you know your a$$ is constantly under scrutiny, all of the hot seat stuff in nonsense, of course he knows his job is on the line. Hope we have a great season because 1) watching them win is a hell of a lot better, and I’m tired of the coaching carousel, we keep switching coaching staffs every 2-3 be prepared to never win
