“Focus On Breathing”

July 26th, 2018

Simple goals for Vita Vea

The Buccaneers’ first-round pick looks like a guy who will struggle in the Tampa climate — and he sounds a little like it, too, as training camp practice begins this morning.

Bucs fans remember what Warren Sapp said about Vea,

No. 99 claims 350-pound guys like Vea can’t succeed in Florida playing football.

Vea was interviewed on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday was was asked  about how he’s acclimating to the local swelter. He was not upbeat.

“You gotta take it one day at a time. You know, when you’re out there, focusing on breathing,” Vea said.

Yes, please breathe, Mr. Vea.

At the NFL Scouting Combine in February, Vea weighed in at 6-4, 347 pounds. Asked what he weighed when reporting to One Buc Palace with his fellow rookies this week, Vea would not give a number.

He added that he plans to take things slowly in training camp in all phases, to be sure he soaks it all in properly.

“Just falling behind the vets and asking them questions,” Vea said.

Joe wants to see how Ali Marpet and nasty (allegedly) new center Ryan Jensen block Vea when the pads come on this weekend. Vea is said to have near superhuman strength. If he really is that special, it could transform the Bucs’ run defense in a huge hurry.

Put em ‘on the ground big boi’!

  2. Defense Rules Says:

Vita, breathing is a good thing. Beats the alternative. Breathe Vita breathe.

  3. Buc believer Says:

Yes focus on breathing and not on yourself like another unnamed DL who shows the world what a comic book he really is by ruining one of the nicest cars ever made with a ridiculous self promoting hood ornament.

  4. Bobby M. Says:

If Vea is as good as advertised, GMC’s days are nearing a close.

    Awwwwwwwwww

    Mr Chubby Wubby struggling………..

Hell…..I DON’T CARE WHO YOU ARE…..it’s hell out there in this Florida Humidity and Heat!!!!!

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

Can he handle the heat….what a bunch of BS…flabbergasted how draft day/pick chattering gets hung on players….

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Players handle their weight differently……..the difference between 347 and 315 is only about 10%…….Vea will probably lose 7-10 pounds eventually.

  8. El_Buc941 Says:

He needs to concentrate on breathing down the necks of opposing QBs. I have a feeling Jensen is gonna make this kid turn beast mode given how Jensen loves interaction with other players.

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

We need you kid! You’re a part of the upgrade, one that’s going to change our defense into a QB’s worst nightmare!
    Stay hydrated!

  10. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

He is a rookie. So instead of giving a cliche response, he is honest about how miserable the weather is in the heat of the afternoon in Florida.

  11. stpetebucsfan Says:

Licht didn’t sign just one more DL to go with Vea…he signed a group of significant DL. Seems to me Buckner is planning to go with that Eagle’s style rotation.

Vea will be fine because he won’t have to be on the field all the time. We have more than adequate reserves/starters to rotate.

  12. Destinjohnny Says:

I think if he was a ballooned up 350 ,I’d
Worry, but I think 350 is kinda his natural weight
The bigger question is I think Marcus Davenport is going to be a stud and the saints burned next years one to trade up
We needed a defensive end. Remember we signed two d tackles in the offseason and Vinny and Gholston can also play inside.
I think Davenport in year 3 is a 15 sack guy
    Hope I’m wrong

  13. Not there yet Says:

He can’t be the only guy over 300 pounds that we’ve signed who had to get used to the climate. I’m not buying it until I see him struggling in the 4th quarter or that’s when he play less snaps. I don’t really care about this narrative in year 1 as a rookie, he’d have to struggle well into the season for me to think this is a thing

I agree….I always liked davenport just not at #7…..davenport>Dotson…..davenport>wester…..davenport>d.smith(still has trouble with speed rushers)…..

    hope we’re wrong….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  15. m0j0 Says:

I seem to recall Sapp getting up to around 330 at one point and he was still effective /able to play his game, so I don’t think it’s a matter of the weight but how well you are conditioned. Vea will be fine.

  16. Ghingus Kwon Says:

Tonga Trucks don’t breathe, they steam!!!

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

He might get away with 350 his 1st yr or 2. But as he ages, that weight will be an impediment. I was hoping he could get down to like 315-325 by the 1st game. We shall see.

  18. G Nick Says:

After the combine, during a pre draft interview, he was asked where he hoped to land and he said Seattle, because he hates the heat. Having herd this, I wondered if the Bucs were aware before they drafted him. No surprise here…

  19. Alphabucfan Says:

Maybe it’s just because I’ve lived here my whole life but Florida’s summers are awesome. I love the heat an humidity. If you can play in this climate you can just about play anywhere lol
