It’s Cornerback Carlton Davis With The Bucs’ Final Second-Round Pick

April 27th, 2018

Former NFL defensive back Mike Mayock, now the NFL Network draft guru, says the Bucs’ new cornerback has the look and the length but not necessarily the cover skills.

Carlton Davis out of Auburn was the selection with Tampa Bay’s third second-round pick of the night, the one they got in trading down with the Patriots. (See the home page)

The Bucs, obviously, are doubling down after grabbing North Carolina cornerback M.J. Stewart in the second round as well. Davis is another guy with a lot of experience like Stewart; he was a starting true freshman in 2015. But he’s got question marks, which is what you get in Round 2: gambles.

Hey, if one of these guys pans out fast, then the Bucs will be in fine shape.

With Brent Grimes unlikely to play much in preseason, there will be lots of reps at outside corner to slug out with Vernon Hargreaves and Ryan Smith.

I like this plan to add two DBs in a deep group.

  2. Greg Says:

Great, a guy that needs to be coached up!

  3. EdJustShootmeBucsFan Says:

    Licht filled some needs anyways.

  4. NFLRealist Says:

Smart strategy by Licht. You roll the dice on two promising prospects and you only need ONE to pan out which could turn into a 1st Rounder net value.

They wanted Vea anyway… so we basically got these two DBs and the Pats 4th rounder FOR FREE.

  5. Bucs Guy Says:

Like this guy. Wish we would have taken Oliver instead of Stewart for CB.
Maybe Stewart will be a Safety?

  6. Tval Says:

rd 2 shouldn’t be “gambles”, they should be 4-7 year starters and likely pro bowlers. id have gone oliver /reid.. oliver hurts

I know a lot of people won’t like it. But when you play in our division you need as many good corners as you can get. I like taking two early it betters the chances that one will be a stud. Let’s be optimistic what if they both turn out to be studs we are set at corner for a while. But from everything I have been reading on the Carolina kid. He is projected a safety so maybe that is why we drafted him there to be are strong safety. He looks physical enough and is a 4 year starter at corner so he should be better than Conte in deep coverage.

  8. Casual Observer Says:

OK pick. The UNC guy to safety.

  9. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Love the fact they knew CB was 3 rounds deep and waited.

  10. Bucs Guy Says:

I think the Bucs are trading both 4th Rd picks to get back into the 3rd around pick #90.

Breaking news: Every rookie needs coached up.
Put that comment in the STPS (stupid things people say) bin.

I like the pick. Very confused on the Jennings pick but hey after last night I believe in Licht. Put Hargreaves on notice. Take this job serious or Licht will cut ties. He has shown he will give up on guys who don’t show the “want to” no problem (except Doug for some reason).

  12. Jimmy T Says:

    Joe,
Mayak also said he has awesome speed & only said he needs to get better at finding the ball. He was VERY high on him and said Hargreaves should worry. Before u nuke the pick do a little better research!!!!

  13. EdJustShootmeBucsFan Says:

Two O line men in the fourth?

  14. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

I really like the Carlton Davis pick.

But passing on Derrius Guice and Isiah Oliver for Ronald Jones and MJ Stewart will haunt Jason Licht in the coming years.

1 outta 3 for the 2nd round, very disappointed, I pray that I’m wrong but that’s my gut instinct right now.

  15. Ndog Says:

Thank You Jimmy T and this article is a prime example why I call this site Negative Bucs Fan!!!!!! He never said he couldnt cover he said he does not have great ball skills.

  16. GabeK Says:

We need to trade back up into the 3rd right now for Josh Sweat!

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Now….Joe, tell us you would rather have two punters…..

  18. BucHead5588 Says:

Who is the Jennings pick this guys talking about

  19. JabooBuc Says:

Mark it down. Guice will be out of the league in less than 3 years.

  20. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @JabooBuc

Tomorrow I’m going to poop a solid chunk of gold. My comment is as accurate as yours.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

In between the NE trade down and our pick of Carlton Davis….a S and 3 CBs were selected……..Licht will ask us to believe that Davis was the pick he wanted all along and somehow knew he wouldn’t be selected…..
    Now even I wouldn’t believe that….

  22. johnnybuc Says:

best pick we’ve made so far. people are so sleep on him best corner in the draft

  23. hamilton Says:

    nice pick.your right side cb.

  24. Jason Mclaurin Says:

This is the best pick we made in the entire draft. Physical, big corner that’s a homestate native as well.

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

Great pick. In a couple years- this young man will anchor one side of our defense

  26. JabooBuc Says:

Blake- Difference is i happen to know some things about this kid. Some of which has not been reported as of yet but that teams were becoming aware of throughout the draft process which was part of the reason he was falling.

I have been saying it for a while prior to the draft and he fell down the board as i thought he would. No doubt he’s a first round talent but he’s the type of guy that will fail in this league.

  27. Duke Says:

    Blake,

I know you follow the team closely, with that in mind, how many times has JL stated that He’s not going to pick a player who has character issues?
The idea that Guice was a miss by JL is flying in the face of reality. C’mon Man!

  28. JabooBuc Says:

Blake- can’t say for sure but I’d be willing to bet Kwon has some insight on Guice which was shared with Licht. I promise you those around that program know what the deal was. He’s a bad apple. Move on.
