Lots Of Question Marks With Stewart

April 27th, 2018

This sure smells like a boom or bust pick.

When the Bucs drafted defensive back M.J. Stewart, Joe had to start doing some research. It seems the Bucs, not having drafted UCF stud defensive back Mike Hughes, tried to find the next-best. Both Hughes and Stewart were suspended by North Carolina (Hughes later transferred to UCF).

Both players were charged with assault for an off-campus incident. The victim got beat up enough that the University of North Carolina had to pay the guy off.

Stewart also got into a fraternity hosue hassle where he got slapped with misdemeanor assault charges.

Aside from his issue away from the football field, the fact Stewart hasn’t had a pick in the last two seasons also raises Joe’s eyebrow.

Time will only tell if this second round pick works out but, before Stewart has slipped on a Bucs helmet, legitimate questions hover.

Could’ve had Isiah Oliver AND Carlton Davis

  2. Kalind Says:

    Easy. Asked and you received.

  3. JA Says:

So they back it up with DAVIS…Post faster!

  4. Mark2001 Says:

    He will be the safety…consider.

  5. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

MJ will be our new SS and will pair up great with Evans. Davis gives us a stud CB to play on the outside. MJ was a reach but the kid can play and moving him into a box safety will do him a lot of good

  6. lambchop Says:

    Safety

  7. hoover923 Says:

I’m sure if he busts, D e K emper will figure out a way to blame it on the coaches.

  8. Destinjohnny Says:

Jason and his 2nd round picks

  9. Joe Says:

will figure out a way to blame it on the coaches.

Who else you going to blame it on, the landscaper at One Buc?

  10. Turn Off the Licht Says:

Would rather have had Donte Jackson with this pick.

  11. hoover923 Says:

If they drafted him as a safety, why were they not looking at Justin Reid?

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

Not crazy about this pick. Loved all the other ones.
    But
Hes nasty aggresive. Could well be a strong safety.
In Smiths defense, you really dont have a free safety/ Strong safety.
    Both Safeties have coverage responsibilities.

With that in mind, Stewart might be a good choice.
Just think there were better choices out there

  13. BucHead5588 Says:

I like this pick an we get Davis as well I watched his tape he is a good tackler we have a whole new Dfense I love this draft we pick up some Olinemen

  14. ruggyup Says:

Yekonm Funky writes move MJ to “box safety”? and he will improve. Can the guy self-improve play now when not under suspicion? If not, are we in the biz to improve marginal players or improve the team with responsible citizen players?

  15. Gruden4President Says:

Waste of a pick by Jason Licht. Wtf was he thinking. He can’t help but always freaking reach for players on the 2nd

  16. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Box safety really….a strong safety who plays more inside the “box”, the area from the line of scrimmage to the LB’s. Evans is a FS, which is why we passed on Reid. This pick makes sense but to me it just seems early to draft him at 53. Licht clearly likes him and I love our last pick. We finally have a corner with size to go up against these big nfc south WRs.

  17. firethecannons Says:

Hope he don’t trigger a whole lot of penalties, seems he tackles ok Honestly the Bucs are very poor at coaching up cornerback
Maybe Licht got him because he has attitude wait n see

  18. Bueller Says:

Really underwhelmed by the two CB picks. Like the safety they took last year, it seemed like a reach. We could have had DeMarcus Walker last year.

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t like this pick at all. There were some good O linemen there. Even a couple of better DB’s. Licht likes to throw in a gamble every draft. This is one. Hope he pans out. Now let go get another DE and a couple of O linemen!

    My day 2 Notes:

    1. I LOVE THE RONALD JONES II PICK … that dude can fly! He’s a very natural pass-catcher, runs hard, hits seams and is GONE and has great character.

    2. I hate(d) the MJ Stewart pick … until the Bucs drafted Carlton Davis … now, I’m okay with it as I think he could start next to Justin Evans at safety, start at slot corner, and fill in as a #1 or #2 CB if injuries hit … he’s very versatile.

    3. I LOVED the trade down to pick up the extra 4th rounder!

    4. I LOVED the Carlton Davis pick … tallest, longest CB in the draft and could immediately start as our #2 CB

    So, we still have (2) 4ths, a 5th and (2) 6ths remaining … NICE!

  21. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

What a dud day 2 turned out to be. I was so geeked picking up those extra picks from the Bills. Looks like we basically wasted them on marginal players that may or may not work out. When I say work out, I mean make the team past two years and actually contribute. Completely underwhelmed by our round 2 picks.

  22. Yusef Says:

As far as MJ Stewart’s questionable off the field issues:

Let’s hope he backs up his conference call when you said he needs to be a role model and he said he did alot of growing up…

    only time will tell…..

    Love the davis pick….

one of these guys have to work out…..Bucs can’t afford for them not to, lets hope for both

  23. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

This is what happens when you reach for RB in the early 2nd.

I hope the RB crowd is happy.
The Bucs could have had a much better DB/OL/DE in the early second and taken a chance on Guice later in the 2nd.

    It is what it is.

  24. Ocala Says:

He was the mvp of the DB’s at the senior bowl.

So let’s see what he can do

  25. Horse Liver Says:

Don’t like him. Soft school known for basketball players. Maybe he can play point guard in the league for ex-Buccaneers hanging around Tampa looking for work.
