Talib Trade Talks Heat Up

March 8th, 2018

It’s really bad when you’re the cornerback benched while playing for a struggling defense that became the league’s worst-ranked defense — during a lost season.

Yeah, Joe gets that the Bucs feel good about a Vernon Hargreaves revival at cornerback, and Joe gets that teams shouldn’t give up on talented but disappointing 22-year-olds.

But let’s not forget that it was Dirk Koetter who benched Hargreaves last year, stripping him of his full-time, outside-corner role — the one he was drafted to play — and relocating him to the nickel position.

It was a stunning and telling move.

The Bucs need stability at cornerback in a bad way, cabbie-punching, granny-hassling, gun-totin’, helmet-wielding, Adderall-popping Pro Bowler Aqib Talib represents a quick fix.

ProFootballTalk.com today brings word out of Denver that the Broncos are “actively shopping” Talib to cut salary.

Talib just turned 32, has made the last five Pro Bowls and certainly has matured since leaving Tampa Bay. Talib also likes Tampa and he spent a lot of time enjoying his many local fans when the Broncos played the Bucs here last season.

We’ve seen elite pass rushers get traded in the past week for third-day draft picks, essentially throwaway picks.

Joe really thinks the Bucs should get this done. Talib practices hard and brings an edge. Tom Brady loved the guy in New England, and many receivers on Talib’s teams have talked about how he made them better because of his competitive fire and tutelage in practice.

So what if a Talib is a bit of a nut, a “wild child” as Raheem Morris called him. If the Bucs can bring him in today for a fifth-round pick, then just do it. Talib has two years left on his contract, $11 million now and $8 million next year. A small price for a good player and a desperately needed upgrade.

Will Gerald McCoy get his wish?

Go get Talib, he can bring some fire to the team and there will be a new staff in 2019 anyways and hopefully it is Jim Schwartz who will emphasize toughness and defense and not put up with the BS that is going on now, I think Talib could be a great on the field mentor to hargreaves if hargreaves is in fact a legit NFL, DB

  2. tmaxcon Says:

Talib has far too much talent for glazers to be ok with. Bucs will screw this up too.

  3. tmaxcon Says:

    Dusty

Vh3-BUST is not nfl talent… his only future in football is coaching pop warner

  4. teacherman777 Says:

    Perfect addition to Brent Grimes.

One is huge, the other is tiny.

Aqib Talib and Brent Grimes have each been top 10 CB’s for 7 years.

    Put them together one time!!

    See the magic happen!!

  5. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

TMAX i hear ya on vh3 i was all in on laremy tunsil that year and bucs scared of the gas mask effect, 10 year NFL left tackle or a guy who might start in the new flag football league

  6. tmaxcon Says:

    Dusty

    I liked tunsil as well

  7. REdtop5588 Says:

Please go get this guy we need him an he’s a beast he can help VH3 an it would really help our team An it’s confidence let’s go I think Bucs get this done I got a feeling

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

    I am a weak man….sign AzzClown

  9. tmaxcon Says:

    REdtop5588

There is ZERO hope for vh3 you cannot coach short, slow or stupid

  10. DoNUTS Says:

Talib has no interest in TB. He has rejected SF trade offer and now talking with NE.

  11. SCBucsFan Says:

Taxi drivers of Tampa are scared

  12. doolnutts Says:

We swung and missed on DE’s already… Mind as well try to fill the CB position as best as we can for now… No way we get all our needs in the draft. We might be in some trouble next season..

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Of them all, Talib is the one who mattered least to me.

Still not fretting though. We’ll be satisfied when we enter training camp.

  14. tmaxcon Says:

    Bonzi

Back off the happy pills and join us in reality….

    4-12 is optimistic

  15. Ndog Says:

There is like a 98% chance we show no interest in Talib.

  16. Bobby M. Says:

Frankly if we do trade for a cornerback, it will be another sign that Licht is cracking under the pressure. If you have ZERO pressure up front, it wont matter what CBs you have back there, they cant cover everyone for 4 seconds….Its simply impossible….particularly in our division where we have 3 top tier QBs.

I think there’s free agents to be signed that can address CB…..my concern remains d-line, o-line and RB. If we are going to give up draft assets, it needs to be for proven d-linemen hungry for one more contract because that’s the only incentive we offer. Nobody is coming here because we are “close”…..I think the Winston investigation is definitely making it harder to sway people this way. Michael Bennett is a great example, if Seattle gave him some say in his destination, defending Super Bowl champs with a legit franchise QB is more appealing then basement dwelling Tampa with a QB under investigation.

  17. tmaxcon Says:

    Bobby M

16 years of FAILURE by glazers has rendered Tampa bay buccaneers the least desirable location in nfl not jameis Winston.

    Winston will not be suspended

  18. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

tmax right on, did you ever stop and notice why any of the bucs 2017 players are not being “highly” sought after? because the bucs have maybe one handful of NFL caliber starters on their team…..baker to cincy is whatever they take evry slug with a heartbeat, but there doesnt seem to be great demand for grimes or any other buc that is available, and if GMC is such a stud DT that is available why is there not a bidding war for his services?

  19. Bird Says:

Surprised that the broncos may work out deal with patriots cause that’s who talib wants to play for.

Why make patriots better if you are broncos? And they are the road block to super bowl.

    Why do talib a solid?

The rich get richer and the bucs may struggle to get one top tier free agent .
Bucs will have to give someone way more than market value is only hope and set a record deal at the position.

  20. SCBucsFan Says:

Wow the negative posters are up early and in full force early on this beautiful day. Don’t forget to kick the dog after you make your post(s). I’d say slap your spouse but (1) that is something you don’t joke about and (2) we all know there is no way anyone would live with someone that negative.

  21. AKick'nTheBucNuts Says:

Why spend a lot of good money for a good player?

Bucs will overpay a third tier player who fits the “Buc man” profile but can’t play with desire, passion, fire and…..talent.

We’ve seen this happen over and over thru the years.

Or, they bring in some old age, injured has-been, looking for a last pay-day player and tout him like they did something to upgrade the team.

Glazers…WE ARE ON TO YOU and we are pissed and sick of it.

  22. tmaxcon Says:

    SCBucsFan

It’s not negativity when its reality now back to your safe space

  23. Nick2 Says:

Joe we are talking about the king of inactivity as GM Jason Licht. I kind of wonder if he now has some kind of bunker mentality just wishing this Free Agency period was all over with so he go back to “realistic expectations.”

  24. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Again…HOF DB Darrell Green played until he was 42. Yes I concede he was exceptional and do not compare Talib or Grimes to Green. But there is no reason they can’t play until their late 30’s if they’ve been taking care of themselves. We know Grimes is in great shape and Miko feeds him some health food diet.

If we could pair Grimes and Talib our backfield could be set for the next few years.

What traditionally happens with the older DB’s is that they lose a half step but they make up for it with their experience. They morph from talented young stud to wily old vet. There is more than one way to get the job done.

  25. Bucssuccs Says:

That moment when the Tampa Bay storm is more successful than the buccaneers even though the Storm is no longer a team

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Tmax loves all players who aren’t Bucs…….lucky for Tmax (according to Tmax) none of them will ever become Bucs….then he would have to hate them.

This is your cue, Tmax to make a rare positive statement about anything Bucs.

  27. darin Says:

Without a pass rush it doesnt matter who the DBs are. I love talibs game but if they get him they better find a way to pressure the qb. I’m still pissed over missing on quinn. We only have to look back a few years here in tampa to see how itll go. I believe it was sciano who got revis and dashon goldson, barron etc. Couldnt rush the passer and gave up most passing yards ever. Licht effed up big time this time. Go ahead and get good corners, but he better get some pass rush somewhere before the season. We know how rookies fare.

  28. tmaxcon Says:

    Tampabaybucfan

When the glazers and bucs achieve something positive ill happily celebrate. 16 years and waiting…

  29. Joe Blahak Says:

The “Joes” really want this team to get “old” and trade away the future. I’m OK with another rebuilding year and adding to a strong foundation of young players. No panic moves please!

  30. SG5821 Says:

Talib to Pats (Atleast Talib wants to go there). Broncos may not be interested to send him to AFC…..

  31. tnew Says:

VHIII is not best suited to be an outside corner. He is suited to play slot corner. This allows him to gamble, be aggressive, play tight, hopefully learn how to blitz off the edge all with help over the top that covers for his lack of top end speed and length.

Whats interesting if you go back into the archives, most, including Koetter projected him as that.

““Well, his quickness and how good of a tackler he is (make him suited to play inside),” Koetter said. “We’re going to start him off both inside and outside. We’re – both with the vets and the rooks – trying to find that perfect nickel and he’s one of the guys we’re looking at for sure.”” from Buccaneers.com

Pre draft, most scouts projected him to be an “excellent” slot corner. Watching his Buffalo film, he was our best CB on the field as a slot. Most NFL teams play with at least three CBs almost 2/3rds the time so why not play him to his strengths??? He can play outside, if needed but he’s stronger in the slot.

  32. USFBUC Says:

The craziest part about the benching and move of VH3 is that the same head coach stuck with DM nearly all season when it was clear he was not getting the job done

  33. tmaxcon Says:

    tnew

Vh3-BUST was a 6th rd talent over drafted and failed. Time to move on. There is no cure for short slow and stupid

  34. Wausa Says:

I’m not a big fan of giving up draft capital especially when you can sign a Malcom Butler, Patrick Robinson or Trumaine Johnson for the same or less money, but a trade would insure the Bucs got a top notch corner. Additionally, a 5th round selection would be well worth it.

  35. AtlBucs Says:

I can see it now, Talib telling Hargreaves: “What you doing way back there boy? Get in his GRILL!”

  36. Pickgrin Says:

Better sign Grimes 1st. If the Bucs trade for Talib and his $11M contract – Miko will be like “sh!t – Brent’s better than that dude – where’s OUR $11M offer??”

  37. Pickgrin Says:

Better to wait until Denver cuts Talib and sign him for a bit more reasonable price commensurate with a downstating 32 year old’s actual abilities…

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Tmax

Bengals, Bills, Browns, Cardinals, Chargers, Falcons, Jaguars, Lions, Panthers, Texans, Titans and Vikings

None of these teams have ever won a SB……yet their fans hang in there.

How long did Eagle fans have to wait.

Oh, the Bucs won 16 years ago so…..they haven’t won one in your lifetime….so I understand.

  39. tmaxcon Says:

    Tampabaybucfan

Way to live in the past… super bowl expired week one following season… you don’t get a lifetime free pass or a get out of the basement free card because you managed 1 measmy super bowl win.

  40. tmaxcon Says:

Bengals, Bills, Browns, Cardinals, Chargers, Falcons, Jaguars, Lions, Panthers, Texans, Titans and Vikings

Don’t have the worst winning percentage in nfl history either that honor is the bucs…

  41. Pepsi Says:

2 years left on his contact,, 11 mil then 8 mi. there no reason to not bring him back for those years, and can look for young corners during those 2 years. The timing and circumstances are perfect. with broncos actively trying to shed the 32 year old corner whos owed decent money.. this trade should cost no more then a 6th. throw in a 6th or 7th next year if it seals the deal.

  42. Ramon Sanchez Says:

Let’s get the deal done go get Talib trade James Winston and Mike Evans to the Browns for the first two first round picks and their second then go draft Bradley Chubb and Derwin James trade down a couple spots for another second round pick get Lamar Jackson then we go get the best o-line and running back wide receiver 3 second round draft picks we go get tight mikesicki 6 foot 6 247 faster than Julio Jones then we got 6 good players for the next 5 years then all our problems are fix for the price of two players go get it done don’t give us a lot of extra money to go get who we want

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Actually Tmax, you seem to be the one living in the past……whining, complaining, pi$$ing and moaning every second of every day over, I guess the last 16 years…..how about giving it a rest….maybe you can take one day a week to either be neutral or disappear from JBF….I don’t expect positive.

  44. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

What is there to be positive about the bucs? The rams, jags, and eagles have surpassed the bucs in a short time frame, the dolphins stay in the 8-8 park year after year but here is the most mismanaged sports franchise in all of professional sports keeps bumbling along for 40 years, the NFL sets it up so you cannot be this bad yet here are the bucs staring at a 3-13

  45. LargoBuc Says:

I’m not sure about Talib. He is obviously talented. But does he want to be a Buc? Will he give his all every play for the fans that payed good money to go to the game? Will he be motivated to keep his nose clean while a Buccaneers?

  46. Gobucs Says:

Um didn’t the Bucs draft Talib?

Yes they did and they sent him packing.

Stupid as s team now may want him back?

If I’m Talib I tell them to kick rocks and suck a big one.

  47. Maze Says:

    If only Joe knew

  48. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

Hey guys this is Jason. Calling again -awkward laugh- so um… clears throat… I need to do something in free agency guys, the fans are getting anxious. Joe Bucs Fan is trolling our good fans making it seem I’m not some lame duck GM… which I’m not… right guys? So, I offered that 7th round pick and a can of beans for Quinn. Also, Seattle laughed at my 6 and 7 round pick and 2 free lap dances at Mons for Bennett, so Talib… I’ll offer free Uber for a year so we don’t have any… trouble. Dial tone… fade to black.

  49. adam from ny Says:

he will yank the chain off gruden’s neck when we play the raiders in 2019 or 2020…get him for that fiasco alone!

  50. Robert Says:

team will never improve until coaches are priority over players. this team, and fans get what they deserve for such small picture thinking.

  51. firethecannons Says:

Once Talib is cut or for a late late round pik, we need to move in on it. Our secondary needs the attitude he brings. Grimes is good but he does not appear to teach/mentor vh3 or ryan smith in any way. Vh3 is example of bust–the Bucs should absolutely not draft cornerback–might as well flush the pick away. Get cornerback in free agency!

  52. GhostofSchiano Says:

Just had a guy at work tell me that McCoy to the Raiders for a 2nd round pick is going to happen. He is a Raiders fan and his sources are telling him so. Where there’s smoke there is fire. Maybe Licht is loading up on draft picks because a rebuild is coming. Possibly a Defensive rebuild. It is a possibility

  53. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    Koetter is from Pocatello, Idaho
    He coached Boise State
Drug Martin went to Boise State
Any questions why we stuck with him so long ?

Jason Licht came to us from Arizona
He was and still is great friends with their GM
Any questions why we made a 1/2 ass effort at Calais Campbell ?

Mike Smith gave Dirk Koetter his shot in Atlanta
Koetter hires Smith when he got the Tampa Job
Mike Smith sucks at his job, yet he remains our Defensive Coordinator
    Any Questions ?

  54. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

In before “Aqib Talib traded to (X) for 5th round pick, Bucs were in trade talks but were out bid.”

    I can see it now.

Wasn’t 30+year old multiple pro bowler T.J. Ward outta Denver suppose to be a “quick fix” for the safety squad Joe?

  61. BushidoEvans Says:

Tmax you need to work on your insulting nicknames, they just don’t flow imho.

  62. Hodad Says:

Why are these teams jettisoning old high paid players for mid round draft choices? Denver, Seattle, both closer then us to the playoffs yet they want to unload the very players that made them winners for so long. Should tell you I want Talib, and Bennett back folks something. If these players aren’t worth the money, or trouble to their current teams, don’t hold your breath thinking they’ll make us better.

  63. tmaxcon Says:

    BushidoEvans

he’s not even worth a nickname. hard to put one together. just another wasted 1st rd pick by bucs.

  64. stephen smolansky Says:

the Bucs have so many holes which cannot be filled with free agents unless the cap goes up another 100 million or so. A better offensive line will make any rb much better. Unless you can pressure the qb consistently any db will eventually be beaten. They need to look to offensive and defensive linemen, and I think a new defensive coordinator.

  65. godzilla13 Says:

Aqib Talib (6-2 205), 4.44 speed, is exactly what the Bucs need. Combining him (Talib/Grimes/Hargreaves) with Grimes would make our secondary instantly legit. If we can not re-sign Grimes than pull off a trade with Buffalo and draft either Holton Hill (6-3 200) Texas or Joshua Johnson (6-1 195) Iowa. Talib has at least two years of very productive football left and his salary is not that bad. It just gets old hearing of great players after players being traded right now and the Bucs just don’t seem to want to pull the trigger. This team is not that far from being great but if they don’t get in the game they will stay mediocre. Just do it.
