Sage columnist Ira Kaufman often says that quality pass rushers rarely hit the market and needy teams need to pounce when they do.
Well, on the heels of stud 27-year-old DE Robert Quinn getting traded to the Dolphins for a fourth-round pick this weekend, a new ESPN report today says versatile pass rusher Michael Bennett was just traded to the Eagles from Seattle for a fifth-rounder and receiver Marcus Johnson. Philly also will get a seventh-round pick from Seattle.
NJ.com writes: “Financially the Eagles will be taking on the remaining three years of [Bennett’s] contract, which holds a $6.6 million hit in 2018. It is very possible the two sides will workout a new deal.”
Yeah, that’s the same Pro Bowler Bennett the Bucs let walk out of their building after the 2012 season for no good reason.
Funny how the world champs thought he could add to their already dangerous pass rush and not hurt team chemistry. But the Bucs’ league-worst pass rush? It’s status woe — for now.
It will be very interesting to see what general manager Jason Licht’s plan is to improve the Bucs’ woeful pass rush. Yes, Joe is certain there is a plan, though both Bennett and/or Quinn would have been upgrades and instant game changers for the Bucs — and they had the cap room and picks to trade for both.

I lost all confidence in Licht. He will probably screw up at #7 and draft Davenport, a project player who will contribute 2- 4 sacks. Im definitely not renewing my season tickets this year. So hard to pull for this team, let alone cover this team. God bless the Joe’s, Ira, and anyone else forced to cover this team. Fire Licht and I will feel much better about our future.

Its extremely frustrating seeing these pass rushers getting franchise tagged and traded, but maybe just maybe Licht is actually working on something for our pass rush including a huge trade or something. They know where they stand so with options going out the window fast they have to be working on a bigger trade cause we know we cant solve this defensive front in this draft alone.

Absolutely abysmal showing from our Gm in everything non draft related once again. Not coming away with either Bennett or Quinn when we desperately needed both, is down right criminal.
It truly sucks that a guy like Licht, who is truly an excellent scout/ evaluator of young talent that does pretty darn well in the draft, is so absolutely lost in this part of the offseason.
I’m convinced we should keep Licht as GM/ Head of the scouting department and bring in someone above him who actually knows how to build a team and make the deals that need to be made.

Free agency hasn’t even started nor have all the player cuts or the second wave of cuts or the draft. GMs in the league have a pretty good idea who will get cut. JimmyJack – Bennett is trash, but Quinn is a 27 year old who has a proven record of success, missing out on him is really unforgivable. As for FA, there isn’t anyone out there and there isn’t any big name that is going to hit the market. There’s basically no one in salary cap trouble since the cap keeps going up so teams will mostly keep key players like DEs. The best chance to do anything would be Peppers if he even wants to leave Carolina, which I’m not sure of.

Got some thoughts on the after-math of these trades.
I agree w Joe they Miami might let Cameron awake loose after getting Quinn. We need to JUMP on him!! Even at 36, the guys had over 10 sacks the last 2 years. STOP GAP #1
Eagles acquire Bennett, so perhaps they now let Curry loose. We need to JUMP ON HIM!! STOP GAP#2
Now we draft a couple of DE’s then we are set there.
As far as McCoy goes, please trade him for 2nd rounder & at least a 5th as well. Would like a 4th as well personally. Perhaps someone would throw us a low 1st rounder instead of 2nd. Bottom line is his value is DECREASING so let’s get something for him now why we still can.

Licht may have a plan, but it is apparent it’s going to the usual over-draft a guy(s) at a position of need and declare the new guy the singular savior to all that ails the pass rush.
Then when that one guy pulls a quad or whatever in preseason week 3 you have built in”Noah Spence-sequence” excuse!!
This is what subpar management looks like, folks! The Bucs need to bring in a hoard of guys to fix what ails them on both lines.
Licht has one last chance in my eyes with Norwell – but reports are that he will miss that opportunity as well.

I don’t know Rod. If you give me a motivated Mo Wilkerson I would take him over Quinn any day. Maybe the Bucs got a good feeling that’s the case and they can sign him.
Or maybe Buckner, from his day with Car, knows he can get Peppers here. Or maybe they know what’s up with Wake or another player that may be a cap casulity……I don’t know how you can say at this point not signing Quinn is unforgivable. Yes Quinn is a game changer Bennett is not and at 27 he is now in his prime. He may have had some influence in the decision. If someone asked me if I’d rather be in south beach or Tampa at the age of 27 and a millionaire it wouldn’t even be close.

The offense has a really good core of young players that we should be excited about. Now we need to set our sights on a young core of defensive players. I think Kwon and Beckwith are a start. These guys do not except losing and that is what this team needs. The losing culture has been accepted around here long enough.

JimmyJack – Everything I’ve read about Mo says he’s lazy and a locker room cancer, not sure why coming to the Bucs would change that, the coaching staff isn’t really a boot in the rear-end kind of regime that could turn that around. Quinn had been injured but even that he’s coming off an 8.5 sack season and has a 19 sack season in his history, even missing a game or two I’d still pencil Quinn in for 9 sacks – and to get that done for a 3rd round pick, it’s unforgivable that Licht did not. With Mo, he seems like a guy that will sign with the Pats.

What percentage of free agents pan out with their new teams? I would think the number is low. It certainly has been for the Bucs. Free agents generally get paid for what they accomplished up to that point and not what they have left to give.
I am a big believer in building through the draft. Hope Springs eternal! However, it’s hard to get excited when you have seen your GM draft a kicker with his 2nd round pic. It would have been less painful to have Joe take me out back and kick me in the coin purse.
My expectations are low. Low for the draft prospects and if they will pan out. Low for the season the Bucs will likely have, and yes low that the Patriots will suck this year. But I will still wear the colors every Sunday and hope for the best.

I’m upset, but I’m not going to kill Licht on here over it because I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes, but I find it hard to believe that a team with no DEs wouldn’t at least offer enough to land one of them, if not both. We could have had a D line of Bennett, McCoy, Quinn and if Licht chose to draft Vita… WOW! But I guess that’s the life of being a Bucs fan, dreaming!

Yeah it might be unlikely they trade JPP. It doesn’t have to be him. Just a name I’m spitballing. And maybe Wilkerson is a cancer like you’ve heard. But it also could be possible it was an internal issues between him and the Jets.
My point is that there are more possibilities then just Quinn or Bennett. And if we sign, just say, Peppers to come here my thoughts will be exactly the same if they traded for Quin……..I hope it works.

Make a big trade and some others for more picks and good players (don’t have to be great), trade up to three for Chubb, trade back into the first for Vea. Malcolm Butler and Carlos Hyde in FA along with other good players at needed positions (all). Never know what kind of picks or what the hell happens before and during the draft, but after all this, SS with the third round pick if we still got one.
Damn, we would look like New England (without the cheating) every year if I was Bucs GM.

All you guys saying it’s good we didn’t get him because he’s old or a cancer have to tell me how you would fix the line. We aren’t good enough to be so picky. We can’t guarantee that we will get any quality DEs in FA because they might not want to come to Tampa. That’s why missing out on Quinn and Bennet is such a big deal, we have no insurance plan for our Dline. Sometimes you have to make the easy decision and not try to play genius. Its a shame the players on the team are trying to recruit who we need but our front office thinks

I actually agree with this for the most part because the Bucs have a losing culture, the worst coaching staff in the division, and a roster full of holes. Bennett would end up getting only three sacks with the Bucs because…well….Bucs. Like you said, I still think the Bucs can find someone who can get you 3-5 sacks off the edge. No sense in trading for that when you can find a player like that, a relative unknown, and keep your assets.
I think the Bucs are going to regret not stepping up on an offer for Robert Quinn but I don’t know if the Bucs can afford to give up a pick and a player for Michael Bennett. You do it for Quinn who’s a former DPOY.

I’m upset at the seeming indifference/ineptitude of Licht and the Glazers, but we also have to aware that there are 32 teams in the league. Every time a coveted player becomes available, we have a 1/31 chance everything else being equal. Our prior penury has left us with more ammunition, but otherwise it’s not reasonable to go “Why did we miss?” On every single prospect.

Trying to stay optimistic is hard as a Bucs fan. But we do have some nice offensive pieces in place. Ok, if we bolster our Oline with free agents either Norwell, Sitton, or the center from the Ravens, draft Nelson @7 we at least will have one of the toughest Olines in Nfl. Add a speed elusive rb to pair with Barber and our offense will be the total package. Obviously we still have issues on defense including pass rush, cb’s but I can get back on board IF and I sa IF we do pick up 2 Olinemen and another rb. Our defense at least has a few studs to build around including Kwon, LVD, Beckwith, Evans, Spence if his shoulder holds up, McCoy, re sign Mcdonald, Ayers and Gholston are decent rotational players. So I am choosing to stay positive. Please give us a reason to be optimistic Licht. GO BUCS !!!!

This is garbage, Joe’s. I really consider myself a level headed fan with a knowledgeable yet positive outlook on the Bucs and this just reeks of overall team failure. These are playoff teams that feel like they need to improve, and they’re sitting at the back of the pack pinching pennies, saving all this cap space like theyre the damn Rays. We’re trying to finagle bargains from actual established while the rest of the league either improves their roster or uses us as leverage to get better deals from other teams. If we were actually forthright in an attempt to improve this roster we could’ve had an excellent end on our roster, instead Licht is trying to be a star GM and rip off teams and is instead getting outbid.

Seriously doubt that McCoy is going anyplace, at least this year. But with GMC & Poe, we’d have a much better interior DLine. Then draft ANOTHER DT (would love Vea or Payne, but Rnds 3-4 sound more realistic). Draft 1-2 DEs & our DLine should be much more solid this year … GMC, Poe, Vea or Payne (hopefully), McDonald (re-sign), Wilkerson (FA), Spence, Ayers, Gholston, Clarke (re-sign), Rookie DE. That’s 4 pretty strong DTs and 6 DEs (that hopefully 2-3 will separate from the pack). Should be good potential there for using a 3-4 much more also, but still being able to field a pretty strong 4-3 (from an interior DLine standpoint).

Makes me cry like a baby to say it. Trade LVD for at least multiple good picks and probably a decent player while getting bunch more cap space. Pick up Leveon Bell. Get LB Roquan Smith (UGA) at #7 (Every NFL scout/GM and their mother say he looks exactly like LVD). And we’ll have multiple good picks from LVD trade. Can use some to possibly trade back into the first for Vea or Davenport if they’re at the right spot.

@this point all we really can do his hope we get a couple starters next week and have a above average draft. Unfortunately doesn’t look like we are going to aquire anyone via trade, so free agency and draft it is. We need 2 cb’s 2 interor Olinemen and a startind ss. Of coarse Dline help, but those pickings are slim to non existing as far as major upgrades through draft\ free agency, of coarse that is why most of us are upset that we missed out on trades for both Quinn, and Bennet. No way to know what exactly happens behind the scenes but i get the impression that the organizations are giving these players some say in where they go as a show of respect/professionalism……Which means we are basically the Browns of the NFC. People only come here for a pay day and if given the choice, they elect elsewhere. Bucs are screwed when free agency hits…..we’ll have to over pay for anyone worth while and whomever we get isn’t possibly coming here because they think we are “close”….its the money and that’s a terrible formula for a locker room/roster.

The goal is to win a Super Bowl , you have 8 team position groups and 32 teams but the Bucs have 2 of the NFL s worst out of 8 .
Not a Chance the Rams ,Patriots or Eagles would have Hardgraves or Spence in their 2018 starting team Super Bowl ready team plans .
If you haven’t noticed those three teams have been very active in assembling their rosters testing to win a Super Bowl and who in the hell has any idea what the hell the Licht train is doing . Btw those three teams built a big big portion of their teams through trades and free agency and they were very aggressive and diligent , not being denied and finding a way to get what they need.Bottom Line Licht has the Top 5 FA money which allows you to be even more aggressive trading and and and the Bucs do have draft pick talent that is starting and it’s in the percentage range that you want it to be , your not going to have a team that is 85 percent their own draft picks . On one hand some here are probably over-reacting but on the other hand can we blame them? We could have acquired two DEs that are upgrades over what we have now for a fourth, fifth, and our two sixth rounders.
And for those talking about saving draft capital, while I would love to draft Barkley I think to move up to 3 would take more than our picks this year. I would also only want to see that kind of move if we had already addressed our other positions.

Sure it’s probably a make or break year for him. But I’d personally much rather be in this situation with a GM that’s confident rather then one getting tight and making desperate attempts to grasp at straws……..But we shall see there’s plenty of time for him to still make a panick move. The Bucs aren’t standing pat that’s for sure. Will be interesting.
Maybe take a look back in the mirror for perspective. It’s a helpful exercise. Remember all those years(last years included) where we won free agency? Where did that get us? Everything isn’t always what it seems.

This is all a horrible pattern that may very well go beyond Jason Licht.
Worst yet we can look forward to another year of griping bc we have no pass rush.
There is no indication whatsoever that the Bucs FO have a plan so much so that even gmc is online publicly questioning the lack of urgency.
It’s tough to watch this happen year after year, that is watching the best FAs get signed while the Bucs sign tier 3 FAs like Swaggy and George Johnson while our division rivals sign Peppers, Poe and Ryan Ramcyzk.
So the division gets stronger as the glazers sit on the arses and raise prices, how does this not upset you?

I have never lived in Tampa.
But I am a Bucs fan since 1989. I used to play them on my younger brother’s GameBoy. I have followed the team for 30 years. They stunk then. They stink now. But I got to see with my own eyes how this team could rise out of the ashes.

I’m sure Licht did his due diligence and was offering fair compensation in every case so far that too many are squawking about. . You can’t force a player or another team to do business with you. There are 31 other teams all vying for the same resources. Bucs fans seem to think we can just go sign any free agent or trade for any rumored undesired player we want. It doesn’t work that way. Takes two to tango. No one here has any idea how hard Licht was or wasn’t trying to get any particular “available” player that you personally covet – nor do you know what the Bucs current evaluation of any of these players is either. Just a bunch of negative assumptions based on nothing but frustration.
I get it. Last year sucked. But this team IS on the rise with some very good young players and so many of the Neggie Nellies on here are just so sure that we are doomed to 4-12. The tampering free period of FA hasn’t even started and people want to know why Licht hasn’t done anything yet…. LOL

The other GM s task is looking to get the most or best viewed compensation for their team and they could care less on these deals that have gone down ; whom they deal with or where the player goes.
All things being equal they may grant the players wishes or if the player is an absolute animal they will forgo the same division but let’s be clear it is the GM s job to get the most compensation.
The rams GM didn’t tell Licht we don’t want to deal with you , nor did Schneider with the Seahawks ………..Some of You California glue sniffers sound like Rick Stroud , who btw does a fair job but some of this trade garbage he is spewing is just that absolute made up garbage.
You need two teams to tango comes into play when multiple extra draft picks are needed or targeted players are in play for both teams , This clearly hasn’t been the case . If we can’t get a top DE, then we need to address the positions that help impact a DE.
1. Sign 2 FA press CBs
2. Sign better FA NT
3. Sign pass several more lighter DT (3 tech) and use them in DE rotation
4. Sign a 34 rush OLB and use on passing downs
5. Sign FA FS
Seriously, let’s sign some additional 3 tech DTs and use them as DEs. Do not mock this idea. Who else will you get to play DE?
NT/DT Poe? Suh? Richardson? Lotulelei?

And Jameis got solid protection last year. He needs to get rid of the ball and live to play another down. One has to look at this from a different point of view. The Bucs have a great pass rush with GMC, Ayers and Spence. The same line that produced 38 sacks in 2016. Focus on our secondary, OG and RB. Wilkerson, Norwell and Talib are still available.
