Wins gamble.
In the past, Joe has referred to Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht as a gambler in the draft because of his habit of making draft-day trades.
It seems Licht is a gambler with non-draft-day trades as well.
Earlier this week while at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, where media is herded in the same complex as just about every NFL mover and shaker known to man, sometimes with alcohol involved, Joe heard rumblings one reason why Licht didn’t pull the trigger on any move for a defensive end earlier is that he was throwing chips into the middle of the table in hopes of acquiring Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.
Well, yesterday while recording a spot on PFT Live, enjoyed by intelligent football fans weekday mornings on NBC Sports Network, hosted by the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, Licht confirmed those rumors.
Licht confessed he passed on some transactions to obtain a defensive end because he had an inkling that Giants shot-caller Dave Gettleman would be open-minded to moving JPP.
Licht also noted he and Gettleman exchanged some dozen phone calls and two dozen texts over the past few weeks while hashing out acceptable trade terms.

he’s done well this offseason…..gotta give him credit!!!!!!…..by now the coaches he hired are under huge pressure!!!!!…..
smitty now has talent and depth to work it along the dline…..the secondary will be in year 3 under smitty so all communication and assignments should be understood by now……cant finish dead last this year!!!!!!
same with dirk….he’s entering year3 as HC……he has an improved oline and the offense will get some much needed talent and depth thru the draft…..time for dirk to score more than 20.9 points per game!!!!!
we’ll see if it was the coaches and scheme or the players and execution!!!!!!….I think its the former…..time will tell!!!!!!

The sheeple are strong here. Seems exclamations are contagious and what will some of you say should GMC have some great years ahead? Anything? This fan base is turning into NY south. Here on the west coast I have to listen to the likes of west coast team fans and it’s annoying how they never talk bad about their teams no matter what. Here’s hoping our Bucs turn the corner and start having some great years ahead.

Their were 2 defensive ends that were rated as good free agents without using a draft pick.. also a running back and bucs STILL have lots of $$$ to spend.

So he passed up Quinn for a 4th and Bennett for a 5th both of which are paid less than JPP and just as productive. How does that make sense?

He has a 6th sense with that stuff or he’s as well connected as anyone, even with his draft day trades, he makes them and then always gets what he wanted in the first place, he’s plugged into what other teams are doing somehow lol. It’s like he has phones tapped or something. 🤔

Not true… the bucs on field performances have beaten a once optimistic happy go lucky guy into a brutally honest miserable prick who is tired of watching this team come out flat led by cancer93… watching the soft heartless bucs captained by cancer93 week in and week out is worse than a crack binge followed by repeated blows to the head…

Not a problem with lvd but not in denial of his slow starts…. no question he was a much better player for schiano. If all these buc defenders are so great why can’t they close a damn game

Quinn is close Bennett is not despite all of Joe’s rantings and of course Bennett brings some off field issues. Does not bother me but you read this blog DB55.
Over half here wouldn’t consider Bennett no matter how good he is.
The difference between a 3rd round and 4th round pick are not that great. Besides Licht as done very well with 4th round picks.
JPP was easily the best DL available this year….he’s this year’s Calais Campbell.
Hope he can infect our entire DL like Campbell did the Jags.

There is just all kinds of wrong with that one sentence.
Licht didn’t “pass” on Quinn. He offered our high 4th rd pick(which is practically a late 3rd rounder) for 2 years of service on a rather high contract. Jason decided that to offer more than that – A. would be too much to pay for Quinn given his injury problems in recent years (plural – as in 2 out of the last 3) and B. Might well keep him from having the needed draft capital to pull off the JPP trade. The 4th round pick offered for Quinn was worth more than the 4th and 6th Miami traded btw.
Its quite likely regarding Bennett that Licht just didn’t want to bring him into the Buccaneers locker room so there was never any real interest. A viewpoint that seems sound given the subsequent outing of news that Bennett was in “trouble” yet again for using bad judgement and just blowing past the old lady security guard and knocking her down or whatever it was.
Furthermore – neither Quinn nor Bennett were “just as productive” as JPP was last year. Not even close really. Sacks alone – yes – the same #. But JPP played a lot more snaps than these guys – had WAY more tackles – had more pressures – more hurries – more batted passes – more forced fumbles
Truly a case of BWTFDYK – cause you’re just spouting off BS and are butthurt we didn’t bring Bennett in. Go ahead – you can admit it. We know already…

And Maxi turning on LD54 now is just the expected natural progression. I remember him ragging on Brooks not that long ago. So I supposed in the name of “keeping it real” -(chuckle) – its pretty much just open trolling season at this point apparently.

C’mon people, Tmax isn’t hatin’ on LVD. He is putting down the inept coaching on how he was being used. He is absolutely 100% CORRECT when it comes to his comment in LVD. Schiano has been the ONLY coach to utilize him properly. He was a beast during those couple of years and aggressive as hell. Then Lovie comes in and wants to put him primarily in a fitness defense and keep him in pass coverage. RIDICULOUS!!! LVD needs to be put back in that aggressive blitzing role constantly playing games w the QB on whether he is coming or not. Need to include Kwon as well on this. This D needs to have fire and play with reckless abandon again.
