Licht Has Taken Trade-Up Calls For No. 7 Pick

March 28th, 2018

GM does a TV chat

Legions of Bucs fans are dreaming of general manager Jason Licht trading down from the No. 7 overall pick and gobbling up more draft picks.

It’s simple logic for many.

Licht has a good track record in the draft, so get the man more picks. Plus, now the Bucs are without a third-round pick after trading for Jason Pierre-Paul, and the Bucs have pressing needs, running back and cornerback, that could be attacked with a later first-round selection and more in return for the No. 7 slot.

Licht confirmed he’s taken calls (no surprise) during his Tuesday session with Pro Football Talk Live.

Good news. Now keep drumming up business for that #7 pick!

  2. Joeypoppems Says:

I love this news. Hopefully a good offer comes through on draft night.

  3. SteveK Says:

Big three prntrade back! I like it!

We need a new CB it looks like.

  4. Defense Rules Says:

I don’t get why so many seem to want the Bucs to trade down. More picks further on down the food chain? Whoopee. We have a chance to draft a difference-maker at #7. And another opportunity to get a starter in the 2nd Rnd. If we wanted, we could package enough lower-Rnd picks to regain our 3rd Rnd pick. Go for quality in the draft … get quantity in FA.

  5. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Interesting interview there on PFT Live! It was a great back and forth by Mike and Jason and allowed us Buc faithful into the behind the scenes of the offseason moving and shaking that we wouldn’t have normally known or heard.

Keep it up! and 29 days and counting till the Saquon Sweepstakes!

    Go Bucs!

  6. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Trade DJax to the 49ers for a 3rd round pick. They need a WR, have an extra 3rd round pick, and Johnny Lynch is their GM. Makes too much sense. DJax is a good player, but with Godwin and so many other weapons, he is expendable. We are better off getting more draft picks, build the future, and possibly find some impact players at positions of need (O-line, RB, secondary).

There is only one player we should be targeting at 7, and that is Quenton Nelson. That will take care of LG for the foreseeable future, and give us a tough nasty O-line. Otherwise, trade down and get more value. We could trade down and still wind up with Derwin James, Vita Vea, or Marcus Davenport.

  7. 813bucboi Says:

    nelson@7 or trade down…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  8. AlabamaBucFan Says:

NFL experts are saying that only half of the players in this year’s coming draft are worthy of a first round grade. The draft is heavy in Quarterbacks and Offensive lineman but rest of the positions is thin for top notch players. Give it, the first seven players will be the crème of the crop but for the most part, this is the year to trade down and pick up extra picks in the later rounds.

  9. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @Jeebs,

I like your thinking there in the proposed DJax trade to the 49ers, it’s very fair and smart. They do have Garcon coming back fully healthy they say from injury late last year, and just re-signed Marquise Goodwin to an extension this offseason. I’m pretty sure Garcon plays in the slot in SF, but maybe Lynch might see some more veteran value in DJax’s addition, plus explosiveness…just overall, not sure Lynch would love DJax’s contract for 2018. Decent scenario there though.

    Go Bucs!

  10. tmaxcon Says:

nelson or down is the only move that makes sense… recoup a mid round pick by eradicating cancer93 from locker room…

  11. RawBucsFan Says:

The only 3 trade down partners would be Buffalo, Miami or Arizona. Let’s get an additional pick or 2 to complete a roster loaded with COMPETITION. I’ve been saying since the season ended that this was the word most needed for our roster because it makes the entire team better. Great job in free agency now let’s finish it off with a great draft. 1st move sign SS Eric Reid or Kenny Vacarro. Draft after trade down:
Rd 1- DT Vita Vea (heir apparent for McCoy)
    Rd 2- RB or DE
Rd 3- CB or RB (obtained in trade)
Rd 4- OG, CB or DE
Rd 5- RB, OG or CB
    Rd 6- OL, CB
    Rd 7- DB, DE, CB

  12. richardtyson Says:

Not a fan of going backwards in a draft that’s not very deep with talent. Because we won that meaningless game and probabaly lost out on the big 3 we now are faced with either an ok player at 7 or we can trade back and get two less than ok players. This team needs starters more than it needs depth.

  13. Pickgrin Says:

    Excellent interview by Florio

The last few seconds are great and made me laugh.

MF – “Have you heard from teams…” (about the possibility of trading back)

    JL – “I have”

MF – “Do you think you would do that”

    JL – ” I Might” (big smile)

If Chubb is there at #7 you take him. If Nelson is there you take him. If Barkley is there you field offers but should probably take him. Otherwise – TRADE DOWN!!!

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

Sony I feel is as good as Barkley.
3 needs a marquee back to be effective.
We just have to may holes.
    We have to trade back
Would love james but we need bodies.
    That saints game killed us

  15. tmaxcon Says:

let’s not get to excited about licht and the draft he has had a few good picks and a few wasted picks…. let’s not forget just 2 years ago he flushed a first and 2 second round picks down the toilet

  16. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe Licht should play it smart and not commit to any trade until the moment Tampa is on the clock.i guarantee you that the offers given now will only triple if their is still key players left at #7!

  17. Buccsfansince98 Says:

I agree we should trade down now that certain needs have been attended too! I say we hear out the bills for their #12 & #22 picks if they happen to call come draft night! It would be nice to see to see if we somehow get James or Minkah to fall through to 12. If not swoop in on Denzel ward because he would have to be there if those two are gone already. Then on 22 it would be nice to complement him with josh Jackson or mike Hughes or tavern Bryan or even go early with a running back pick and go with a DE in the 2nd instead of drafting Chubb like many suspect.

Either way I strongly believe that Jason Licht has once again put himself in a situation at draft night where he is at an expense of different options because of how good he has done in the free agency! Now all we need is dirk and Jameis to get it together and that atrocious defense to put their talents together and ball out!

  18. '79Defense Says:

Sad that this type of talk is always more fun and compelling than the regular season.

  19. SCBucsFan Says:

El Buc so way do I see him trading that pick, or anyone trading for it, until 6 pick is off the board

  20. SCBucsFan Says:

*no way please get an edit and ignore button!

  21. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Ahhh…@DestinJohnny is up to his ol’ tricks again! 🙂

    Says:

“Sony I feel is as good as Barkley”….good lord.

    And there you go folks.

    Go Bucs!

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think it depends in who is available when we pick. While getting more picks would be great, it seems every year we see someone unexpected fall to us.

And if that happens, we should take him.

  23. James Craig Marlow Says:

Quality, not quantity! Want to fill more needs than the draft can offer… pay up in free agency (in more years that just this one). If you need more “people” you have created your own problems via poor player development, scouting, and planning as a NFL organization.

  24. MadMax Says:

Nelson or Chubb….or trade down at least twice, maybe 3 times, then start loading…..Harold Landry first…then Guice or Nick Chubb…get a safety next….then o line.

  25. David Says:

If they can get Chubb —- no trade.
    If they can’t, trade down.
A lot of DB’s and RB’s to be had in rd 1-4

(Only one game changing DE though)

  26. Lord Cornelius Says:

We need quantity over quality imo. We have no depth at CB/RB/LG. We have no youth at DT and barely any at DE. We have no legit SS.

This draft has like 15 players I view as blue chip talents:

Elite / Plug in big obvious hole 3: Chubb / Barkley / Nelson

Still Blue Chip / day 1 starters with probowl or better potential:

DT-Vita Vea / Taven Bryan / Daron Payne / Maurcice Hurst

    DE-Marcus Davenport

    CB-Denzel Ward/Joshua Jackson/Jaire Alexander

    SS-Derwin James

    FS/CB-Minkah Fitzpatrick

That’s like 10 players easy that I’d be super happy with as a R1 pick. Not including the top LBS/WR which will push guys like this down. Not to mention Will Hernandez/Isaiah Wynn or others in what is a solid OG class.

There is depth in this draft for sure – mostly at RB/O-line/DT.

Round 2 / Round 3 picks are still hugely valueable. A trade down from 7 to 11,12 or 15 would likely net a 2 and 3 – or more – since those 3 teams could all be bidding against eachother in this scenario.

  27. Lord Cornelius Says:

Yeah David as much as I love Nelson he is an OG. I’d almost still trade down although that’d be really tough – but say Buffalo is offering 12 + 2 2nd rounders it’s hard not to make the deal.

  28. Gambelero Says:

So, does anybody doubt that Bucs management lurks here? Almost a direct quotes from Joe’s lamentations about sacklessness.

  29. Its_A_Tough_Buc_Life Says:

    My dream draft… If one of the 4 QB’s falls past 6, we trade back with Buffalo… #7 for #12, #22 & #65. Trade 4th rd. pick # 102 to Dallas for 4th rd. picks # 116 & # 137

    #12- Derwin James S/FSU (Day 1 starter)
    #22- Derrius Guice RB/LSU (Lightning)
#38- Arden Key DE/LSU (Too talented to ignore)
#65- Maurice Hurst DT/Michigan (hopefully he gets overlooked bc of the heart issues)
#116- DJ Reed CB/Kansas St. (special teamer we desperately need)
    #137- Bo Scarborough RB/Alabama (Thunder)
    #144- Dante Pettis WR/Washington (Desean’s eventual replacement)
#202- Holton hill CB/Texas (Mock drafts have him going end of 5th, way too low)
#255 – Zaycoven Henderson (No idea who this guy is, I just like the name)

  30. Its_A_Tough_Buc_Life Says:

If that is too high for Buffalo’s blood, trade # 7 for #12, #53, #56. Same trade with Dallas in the 4th.

    #12- Derwin James S/FSU (Day 1 starter)
    #38- Sony Michel RB/Georgia (Lightning)
#53- Maurice Hurst DT/Michigan (again, stud who has been cleared to play, hopefully GM’s get too scared to pick him)
#56- Orlando Brown OT/Oklahom (Forget the combine, dude didnt allow a sack all season. I’ll take that)
#116- DJ Reed CB/Kansas St. (special teamer we desperately need)
    #137- Bo Scarborough RB/Alabama (Thunder)
    #144- Dante Pettis WR/Washington (Desean’s eventual replacement)
#202- Holton hill CB/Texas (Mock drafts have him going end of 5th, way too low)
#255 – Zaycoven Henderson (Again, No idea who this guy is, but that name!)

  31. Its_A_Tough_Buc_Life Says:

    No trades?

#7- Quentin Nelson G/Notre Dame (Oline becomes one of the best in the game)
#38- Sony Michel RB/Georgia (#3 back in this draft IMO, but an absolute stud with not much wear and tear)
#102- Tony Brown CB/Alabama (Has the size and tools to be a good CB)
#144- Lowell Lotulelei DT/Utah (We need to address DT, with 93 getting up there in age)
#180- Holton Hill CB/Texas (I am high on this cat)
#202- Kentavious Street DE/NC State (we get the second best DE out of NC State!)
#255- Zaycoven Henderson (You guessed it)

This draft is not deep on talent!!!! Take a game changer at 7 whether it be nelson or derwin.

  34. 813bucboi Says:

    toughbuclife

any of those drafts would work for me….but I would take Antonio callaway at #255…..he could serve as a replacement for hump in the near future and also provide a spark in the kick return game….I really like the second mock tho…..that would be a HR IMO…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!!

  35. NFLNut Says:

    ************

If we could get #12, #22 and #96 from the Bills for #7 so they can move up and grab the last of the top 4 QBs, that’s a no-brainer trade for us to make imho.

I don’t care how awesome Saquon, Chubb or Nelson are, none of them are worth three top 100 selections.

Who would rather have Saquon than Guice + Derwin + Nnandi?

Who would rather have Nelson than Ragnow + Derwon + Guice?

Who would rather have Chubb than Davenport + Guice + Anthony Averett?

Who would rather have Denzel Ward than Joshua Jackson + Guice + Nnandi?

I don’t think we can mess up the #7 pick as if we stay put, we’ll take one of: Saquon, Chubb, Nelson, Derwin, Minkah or Ward, and we trade down, we should do even better.

I wish the draft was tomorrow!

  36. AlteredEgo Says:

    50/50….it is SMOKE…..

  37. Buc4life Says:

Stop talking about trading or waiving DJAX! First no one is going to trade for an aging WE making over $10 million a year. Second we can’t waive him when he has guaranteed money this year. He still has gas in the tank and with Jameis healthy hopefully we can take advantage of his speed. Stop talking Godwin up because he does not present the same problems for defenses that DJAX creates. Hope Dirk will figure out how to use our weapons because with a RB this offense could be unstoppable. Trade back if possible, if not take Darwin James or Denzel Ward.

  38. josstang Says:

we keep trading down taking mid round players that dont pan out. i would rather have 1 good player/starter than 3 or 4 average to below average players that end up being cut or traded later.

  39. Lord Cornelius Says:

    “josstang Says:

we keep trading down taking mid round players that dont pan out”

We have only traded down once in an early round in the last 4 drafts… and have made multiple moves up…

And we have a ton of mid-round starters/good players from the last 4 drafts…

Godwin/J Evans/Beckwith/Kwon/Marpet/etc all mid rounders / key cogs going forward…

  40. BushidoEvans Says:

Man, draft Derwin so I can start calling him The Black Panther! If Spence gets healthy we have Spawn and The Black Panther!!! 🙂

  41. BushidoEvans Says:

All Jokes aside I think Derwin goes with the attitude Tampa is trying to create right now.

  42. Jared DePiro Says:

trade down with Arizona or buffalo and pick josh Jackson

  43. Jeagan1999 Says:

Barkley, Chubb or Nelson are no brainers, but if they are all gone by 7, why not trade down with a QB hungry team and pick up a couple extra picks. Personally, I would also be willing to move LVD for a low 1 or high 2nd rounder. He’s still a very good player, but we have a pretty good linebacker corps (even without David) and need other positions more than WLB.(CB, RB, Safety, OL)

  44. Wausa Says:

I am down with trading back if the Bucs are confident they can still land Derwin James, but I am concerned he will not make it out of the top 10.

Having a leader like JPP on the line, Kwon at linebacker and Derwin in the secondary has got to be very exciting for Jason Licht.

  45. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @NFLNut

Perhaps you are old enough to remember the legendary Bobby Beathard…in 38 years in the league he got to seven SB’s and won four of them. Probably the best GM ever but I’m sure others have candidates. At some level I’ll always be a huge Paul Brown fan but he coached as well.

Beathard had a simple philosophy about the draft. If 50% are going to bust your best protection is not spending hours on a draft board or scouting tapes..that obviously helps…but in Beathard’s strategy you trade down EVERY chance you get believing that the best solution to a 50% failure rate is to double your amount of selections.

    Your logic makes perfect sense.

  46. Mike Johnson Says:

If great trade down offers came, I do it with one exception..Chubb was still on the board. Barkley is good but there are other running backs in the draft who are going to be good also. I live out West and read an article this morning where Arizona is saying they would luv to draft one of the top 4 or 5 Qb’s in the draft and have him sit and learn for a while. We would be crazy not to jump at a..2 for 1 deal..recouping our 3rd rd loss. Licht seems to be..revvin up the anty…We could strike pure gold in this draft. This even makes Mike Johnson a little excited.

  47. NodakPirate Says:

Really hoping for one of the 3 to fall to us but if not something like this would be great.

    #1 QB
    #2 Barkley
    #3 QB
    #4 Chubb
    #5 QB
    #6 Nelson
#7 bidding war for QB between Mia, Buf, and Ari.

Hopefully we walk away with Buffalo’s #12,#22, and 1 or 2 more picks. Then James drops to 12( wishful thinking) and Hurst or Vea or a top CB at #22. Then Sony, Guice or Chubb in the 2nd.

  48. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Mike it’s good to see you excited! 🙂

  49. NFLNut Says:

    StPeteBucsFan,

Beathard was a football genius and I agree with him 100% … as for Paul Brown … he invented the word dynasty imho and I consider Otto Graham, not Tom Brady, to be the true GOAT!

  50. NFLNut Says:

    NodakPirate,

Great post and all very possible … also Derwin “dropping” to #12 is not unrealistic at all. He’s generally mocked from #10-#19 and I currently think he’ll go to the Redskins or Packers, so he’d be available at #12.

  51. BucfaninCA Says:

Does anyone here watch actual game film or only highlights? Other than a handful of a few prospects it’s a really weak class.
If Nelson is sitting on the board at 7 you run to the podium to drop that ticket. This kid has All Pro written all over him. The NFL is won in the trenches both on offense and defense unfortunately the DE group is terrible.
BTW Tampax STFU already! You argument is really old. Put up or shut up with some type of film evidence that supports your thoughts that GM is as bad as you say. You never will and can’t because you have no idea what you are talking about.

“All Jokes aside I think Derwin goes with the attitude Tampa is trying to create right now.”

Goodell and owners wait to see what the Bucs are trying to do and then try to f#ck us over in some way.

Goodell-“Okay everyone, we just saw that the Bucs are trying to put together a tougher team so now I’ve come up with a rule 5 minutes ago to continue to make the NFL soft as baby sh!t. Anyone not opposed to this rule and screwing the Bucs over say “I.”

    Owners: “I” x32

James hits too hard for two hand touch. Sorry FSU fans.

  55. CalBucsFan Says:

Bucaneer Bansai is right, it depends on who is available at 7. Last year is the perfect example, most had OJ Howard going in the top 4 and Bucs get him at 10.

Don’t recall who said it above, but kudos to them for saying, “draft quality, sign FEs for quantity.” Quality should ALWAYS be taken over quantity.

So, if Barkley falls and is available with the 7th pick, do all of you “trade-downers” take a pass on him and trade-down anyway? Hell, I couldn’t run fast enough to take the pick card to the podium if he were available!

I also believe NY will take a QB with the 2nd pick. If they do, I would get on the phone IMMEDIATELY and offer with Cleveland and offer DeSean Jackson to move up 3 picks and then take Barkley to join his former Penn State WR Godwin in Tampa. Godwin, like Barkley, are outstanding quality players!

  56. NFLNut Says:

    ^ CALBUCSFAN,

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Saquon Barkley and would be thrilled if we landed him at #7 … BUT … if the Bills offered us the #12, #22 and #96, I’d trade down as I don’t think even Saquon is worth Derrius Guice + Derwin James + Frank Ragnow or a similar trio.

  57. NodakPirate Says:

    @nflnut

If Barkley is there at 7 then the Bills won’t be trading up for Jackson. They can draft him at 12. But I don’t see them drafting him.

  58. NFLNut Says:

^ No, NOT for Lamar Jackson … for Mayfield, Rosen or Allen only …

  59. NodakPirate Says:

Yes I meant if Barkley is there then 4QBs would have already had to have been picked. I can’t really see anyone going top7 but the 4QBs and Barkley, Chubb, and Nelson. Hence Buffalo wouldn’t be moving up unless they wanted Jackson.

  60. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Lord Cornelius, so you say there are maybe 10 blue chip players in draft and therefore you want to trade back to 15. Lol, makes sense. Maybe 11 QBs will be taken prior to the 15th pick.
