Way Ahead Of The Curve

January 15th, 2018

Serious numbers.

Joe knows the haters just cannot stand the fact that America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is the face of the Bucs franchise.

And he isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

Just the mere thought of Jameis dropping back to pass has the haters twitching and chirping out loud like they have Tourette’s. But the following numbers will really have the haters running out into traffic on I-275.

A regular reader of Joe’s who goes by the handle of @Jameis1of1 was number crunching Hall of Fame quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era and only one has come close to putting up the numbers Jameis has before the age of 24, and that was the great Dan Marino.

A look at stats below is breathtaking. And it also demonstrates that in no way shape or form, barring something unforeseen with the Uber hassle, are the Bucs going to give up on Jameis.

And Joe understands this will drive more than a few Bucs fans to drink heavily as a result.

    WOW

  2. AC Says:

They will still find a way to hate on him.. Fake A$$ fans who are complaining about QB after dealing with all the bums we had before Jameis is something i will never understand.. yea he makes stupid mistakes at times but give the man some time to grow. We have been waiting long enough anyway might as well wait for the final product

  3. RustyRhinos Says:

As long as Mr. Winston improves his Win total not just his personal stats. There should not be any bad feelings toward him. If he does not improve the only thing “FANS” and anyone else gives a damn about which is WINS, all the stats in the NFL record books won’t make a single bit of difference.

  4. Bob in Valrico Says:

Points matter. When we play with the the lead both offense and defense will be able to take more chances. Two of the most experienced QB’s were unable to
overcome slow starts and two turnovers yesterday. Arrow pointing up for Jameis
after he came back. Koetter needs to get Jameis in the flow of the game early before he starts throwing deep passes. And jameis needs to cut down on TO’s,
If licht keeps hitting and missing on these late round RB’s, then Koetter needs to incoorporate both Barber and Sims into the offense. A lot of good offenses get
50 or more receptions from RB’s.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

does the crowd jump up and down and cheer when a QB gets 300 yards a game???? Or when they score a Touchdown!!!!!!!!

Too much attention to yards on this site and not what counts!!!!!! Points!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smell the coffee sheep, because it smells pretty stale!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

To early to tell whether Jameis is ahead of a curve or merely on a circle

  7. PH Fan Says:

Isn’t football a team sport? Add an ‘average defense’ and tweak the play calling. The Bucs would be at least a 10-6 team.

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

All this points out to and what joe will never talk about is that the “trade down” from the overall 1 pick was right!!!!!!!!!!! If the roster is bad and you have the so called franchise qb, all you will get is a lot of yards and nothing else!!!!!!!!! The roster was not ready and it is playing out for all to see!!!!!!! And the angry people and sheep are blaming coaches because they were told that if you have a so called franchise qb that wins and playoffs are guaranteed!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Josh Says:

Misleading statistical minutia. Of course his stats will be crazy comparing him to any qb by the time he’s 23–he was drafted and played his first NFL game at 20! To be more honest and less misleading, they should look at numbers at the conclusion of their 3rd seasons. I like Jameis, and support him and hope he’s successful, but this means close to nothing.

  10. darin Says:

Not sure why real buc fans would not want jameis as our qb, other than the childish college affiliation deal. Its a shame people who are football “fans” arent very intelligent ones. Jameis can make all the throws and is one of the best competitors in the nfl. He will be around alot longer than dirk, which is good. Dirk isnt doing him any favors. He is trying to complete passes when the other team knows theyre coming, which isnt easy. If dirk ever decides to run the ball and draw up more efficient routes jameis will be top 3. I cant believe how many “fans” discount the importance of the coordinators and systems in place. Jameis isnt n never will be the problem kids. And josh I agree, means close to nothing to me either. Stats over losing seasons are meaningless. His stats wont be as good during a winning season because they will be running more and not throwing so many garbage yards at end of games. We need less stats and more wins, thats on the coaches.

  11. Not there yet Says:

Lol I’m a Winston fan but this is ridiculous. Ken stabler? Joe Montana? Are you serious can we stop the madness and simply compare the guy to his peers not quarterbacks from 3 decades ago. Yes it makes me want to jump off a bridge because it’s stupid. Two of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game beast and Manning are no where on this list neither is Brees so how can this website even take this trash seriously. Yards and TD means nothing about how good the quarterback if he’s constantly losing. I give up what’s wrong with people

  12. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Get my quarterback a stud RB get him a huge hog on Oline give our team a pass rush… that will be huge steps forward to get us into the playoffs

  13. AlteredEgo Says:

Pryda…sure that is easy to see and easy to say….how ?

  14. Ndog Says:

Realist you look more clueless by the day. So you say points are all that matter right? Then how about your great coaching staff stop somebody from scoring? And BTW without yards you don’t move the ball and you don’t score unless your defense actually slows someone down and gets you good field position. You see to me these numbers point out that the reason Jameis has so many yards is because he has to drive the length of the field each drive cause his defense is so bad especially the freaking COACHING!

  15. AlteredEgo Says:

Ndog…have you ever coached ?….if you had you would know talent trump coaching 9 out of 10 times

  16. AlteredEgo Says:

JOE WTF is my comment awaiting moderation…?

  17. BrianBucs Says:

Again, another useless stat that means absolutely nothing.

  18. Ndog Says:

Then why do we have coaches at all? Man Altered you should just give up football brother as in this sport coaching is more important than any other, which apparently is news to you. Surprise surprise you are wrong again.

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

This is Bullsh..! Way ahead of the curve my A..!
WINNING is way above the curve. Stats are for losers. Just ask the infamous Ringless..Dan Marino! Mariota might not have the stats. But he got his team to the 2nd rd. That mkes him..a Winner. You play to win the game. Who said that?…..Not Herm Edwards. It was the great….LOMBARDI!!!

  20. Robert Says:

comparing him to SB qb’s is not an accurate assessment. He’s never been in a SB.

It’s like comparing danica patrick to Jimmie Johnson

  21. Pickgrin Says:

Even a full on Jameis homer like myself can see that this “info” is meaningless.

All this barely readable chart shows is that Jameis Winston started his NFL career at a younger age than a bunch of well known QBs from 20, 30 and 40+ years ago.

Including Staubach on the list just shows how silly and meaningless this “comparison” is. Roger was 27 years old (3 years older than Winston is now) when he played his 1st NFL season for the Cowboys (due to military commitment) in 1969 (49 years ago).

    C’mon man…

The only relevant figure I can (barely) see from this chart is that Winston had to throw more than 4000 yards worth of passes than Marino did to reach the same # of TDs early in their careers.

  22. Sunny Says:

That’s great but compare full first 3 seasons as starter not by age yards are great but need to close out in the red zone need a Rb or Fb to pound the rock like a mike A for short yardage we suck there

  23. ben Says:

Winston is rated as average qb by the nfl …nothing more, even with all his weapons. 1 st pick in the draft and nothing special.. What are the bucs back up qb stats?

  24. Ndog Says:

I think you guys are missing the point he is just showing where Jameis is compared to others at the same age thus illustrating where he could be eventually, stats wise, later in his career. This actually is a lot like LeBron in that he will hold most every stat record there is in basketball because he started so young and was so good early. Is that saying he is on that level now of course not but it is what he could do with his current path.

  25. Robert Says:

they hould let ryan fitz be the starter

  26. AlteredEgo Says:

I did not see one Jamesi bonehead play the past two weekends of football…

  27. Jimbo Says:

Winston is a bery good QB and will be an excellent one. Anyone who actually believes Marcus Mariota is better knows nothing about the sport. This coaching staff is horrific on both sides of the ball and Licht is a far below average GM. Those are the real concerns….Winston as QB for the Eagles or Vikings would destroy the Pats.

  28. Ga. Buc fan 41years Says:

The so called fans that hate jambes Never had to endure the likes of Jack Tomphson [ the throw’n Somoan]

  29. passthebuc Says:

Best course I took in college was: How to lie with statistics.

If JW is the face of the Buc’s for the long term, there is no reason for me to be a fan. He was mediocre in college and mediocre now.

There is only one statistic that counts. Victories. The rest is just noise.

  30. webster Says:

    To all jameis fans…..

Please stop trying to defend jameis to these hicks on this thread. Some have no clue about football and some will never like him because he is black. They will say otherwise and it has nothing to do with race but it is obvious. Blake bortles sucks so much that players around the league clown him yet his TEAM is in the championship. Based on the logic of these yahoos on this thread, bortles is the reason and not because of a legendary defense, strong running game which happens to be things jameis did not have. These yahoos blame jameis for everything which again shows their cluelessness and or the hate for him being black. There is no way around it. Who can defend their belief that bortles is more equipped to be a playoff qb than jameis? If anything, it should prove the bucs need to get better around jameis. Just like the saints got better around brees after 4 years sucking on defense and no consistent running game which equated to no playoffs. Yahoos, it takes more than a qb and in this case a black qb.

    ————————————————————————-

That’s a bit of a contradiction there don’t you think passthebuc?

If “victories” is all that “count” – then how could Winston have been “mediocre in college” when his record as a starting QB at FSU was 26-1???

Your dis-like of Jameis is blinding your ability to even make reasonable points dude.

Winston will be the Bucs QB for many, many years – so you might as well just jump ship right now.

  32. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Robert you shouldn’t even be up here with that garbage. Fitz start??? Go root for Tennessee man Fitz won’t start unless he has to. You Jameis haters need to get over yourselves and accept the fact Fameis Jameis will be our starting qb for a long time so stop with your nonsense.

  33. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Thank you Pick exactly what I was going to say. These clowns don’t think before they type

  34. Eric Says:

Here is something that can’ be ignored when comparing those old school qb’s. Back in the day the defense would just kill people with the hits they put on players. It’s a different game now, more like two hand touch. Once you factor that in it makes total sense hat all the Qb’s are throwing for 4000-5000 yards per season so really not that impressive. Jameis would have been killed going by the old school rules, just look at how soft he is. All he did was get tackled to the ground, definitely no vicious hit. So just stop with the ridiculous comparisions, you are what we see and what I see is a loser QB!!

  35. Eric Says:

Oh yeah and back then people were actually smart because they stayed in school. Jameis barely knows proper english, with gibberish grammar. How smart are you at age 20?

  36. ben Says:

Webster..because people don’t agree with your man crush on Winston which has NOTHING to do with color …. the bucs are a terrible team but Winston is not an accurate passing qb and has made poor decisions on the field.. hoping he improves in the future and his character is not in question

  37. loggedontosay Says:

    Passthebuc,

What unaccredited college did you attend?

  38. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Impressive! This is one position (which is of paramount importance) that gives some hope. Many other pieces are needed but one of the hardest pieces to find seems to have been found…

  39. NFLNut Says:

@Jameis1of1 is a must follow along with some other guys on Twitter. There’s at least 5-10 Twitter guys that are way better than the sorry writers for the Tampa Bay Times and other local media imho … by the way, for those who want to see stats comparing Jameis to his contemporaries … there are lots of stats and tables at that guy’s Twitter page doing just that.

  40. webster Says:

    Ben

You are an idiot if you think some of the vitriol jameis takes has nothing to do with color.

    Eric

You to are an idiot if you think a person with a 4.0 in high school with a scholarship to stanford is some how not smart. The one thing all of his coaches he has ever had rave about is this man’s recall and you say he is not smart? No, its you that is not smart.

  41. mike10 Says:

This is great stuff, truly fascinating and cause for optimism.

But where are the wins? I want less ill-timed INTs, inefficiencies in the red zone, first half slow starts, poor decisions, and fumbles. I want more playoffs and after 3 years better than a 5 win season (2 of which came from the backup).

Enough numbers, you have more receiving talent than any QB in the league. Go lead a winning franchise.

  42. mike10 Says:

Also, give me at least one long completion to DJAX next year.

Anyone watch the playoffs yesterday? We ain’t goin no where if Jameis doesn’t get a long ball.

  43. JAB83 Says:

You goofs… ALL OF YOU BANDWAGON BLOW HARDS….

The point is… NO Hall Of Fame QB was as good as JW at his age….

Its not a mark against JW he was drafted at 20… Its a credit!!! The only real IF here is on everyone not named JW….. IF THEY WERE GOOD ENOUGH THEY TO WOULD HAVE BEEN DRAFTED AT 20!!! If they had to deal with his circumstances would they still produce? If the haters had half a brain…. Never mind…

    Wake Up Clones

    IF… is not relevant here…

    The FACTS ARE SIMPLE….

No QB past or PRESENT has done what JW has done at his age!!!! FACTS no Opinions or IFs….

The FACT that we have a QB that is throwing up PERSONAL NUMBERS better than anyone ever has at his age is remarkable!!!! Enjoy the fact that your Team…. IF it really is your team??? Your team has the best young QB of all time… I would say that as a Die Hard Life long Bucs Fan. Thats something I never would of dreamed of… I just wanted a decent QB to enjoy….

NOW WE HAVE THE BEST OF THE BEST FOLKS….

WAKE THE F UP AND STOP DRAGGING THE TEAM DOWN WITH YOUR DEPRESSION LIKE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS…. Just enjoy the ride… Its no different than any other ride or team… It has ups and downs…

  44. Buc4life Says:

    Altered ego-

How about Mariota throwing across his body right to a chief db? Oh thats right he’s a winner so it wasn’t complete luck that it was batted right back to him for a score. It doesn’t hurt either when the refs refuse to rule fumbles as fumbles.

  45. Rob Says:

How many wins does the human ATM have Joe? Guess they left that stat out , didn’t they? How about when the ATM gets suspended for 6 games next year , will that stat be listed too? Wins Joe. That is the only stat that matters. Go Bucs!

  46. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Eric your stupidity knows no bounds and just showed why color is brought up on this board. Your ignant and racist statement about Jameis is ridiculous and it’s what you people do to make yourselves feel superior to other kinds of people. Just because someone doesn’t enunciate their words or use correct grammar all the time doesn’t dictate their intelligence. There’s a lot of people a lot more intelligent than you that don’t speak so well like you condescending people like.

Why is it you guys always bring up his accuracy and the other things that need to get better but never once do you compliment the things he’s done well or the fact he is getting better each year? All year long I read the same clowns write the same ol spiel no matter how good he does in a game you fools still complain. Against Atlanta in the 2nd game he was almost flawless. Against the Saints he wins the game on a 39 yard td and he’s had quite a few long completions in Tampa and people still think he’s so inaccurate.

People keep crying about wins as the ONLY thing that matters well before coming to Tampa Jameis was a winner every where he went but he gets here and becomes a loser. Football is a team sport so our record isn’t on just him. This team has turned him into a loser and do some of the fans

  47. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    Useless stats = useless fans…
Football is a team sport…but good film and stats will attract you to a better TEAM…
    go bucs!!!
