Franchise Record In Sight

December 17th, 2017

Duo on a record-setting pace.

Yes, the Bucs very easily can set a franchise record in the next three weeks. No, smart alecks, it’s not for the least amount of sacks.

Per multimedia maven Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com, the Bucs currently have converted 282 first downs this season, right under 22 a game. If that pace continues, the Bucs could finish the season with 347 first downs.

That would break the team’s previous record of 344 set in 1984.

Not too shabby. But, yeah, let’s get rid of the starting quarterback responsible for this, who navigates a total sh!tshow of a running attack starring an over-the-hill, can’t-read-blocks, $7 million tailback.

  1. Lakeland Says:

That’s a whole lot of 1st downs in garbage time.

  2. Since76 Says:

There was a lot of garbage time in which to get first downs.

  3. DBS Says:

That’s a whole lot of garbage period. Still trying to make something out of nothing.

  4. Gobucs Says:

Wow that’s something to be proud of.

It’s pretty bad for this team when these types of facts are being brought up.

And our quarterback is barely average at this point.

His mechanics suck. His windup is horrible and to top it off the rest of the team sucks too.

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

Dirk gonna set a record as the only coach in Bucs history to be undefeated on opening day.

  6. Bob in Valrico Says:

Watcing the pats ,Steeler game.Brady just threw hid first INT in 301 pass attempts against Steelers. Now thats a meaning ful stat.

  7. lurker Says:

i wanted me some jameis christ and thought he would be a savior, but alas…

how can you joes not see the weaknesses in his game? including off-the field poor decisions?

it is even more apparent when watching these many other young quarterbacks making accurate throws, non-bone-headed plays.

  8. 941bucsfan Says:

People on here act like that record is not significant, talking about garbage time. We have been in garbage time over the last 10 years, so lets not act like this is our first season since 1984 in which we have had many games in garbage time..

  9. Cover Deuce Says:

Last I checked, it’s touchdowns and wins that matter the most

  10. Cobraboy Says:

Nothing like racking up the stats against teams in prevent D’s.

  11. mark2001 Says:

You do know every time you mention Martin, you basically just put another proverbial nail in the Koetter, and maybe Licht coffin. We have seen too many bad decisions about players and their usage this year.

  12. TonyC Says:

Stop talking about the ersatz virtues of this season which are essentially nil and lets look to the future with a new coach, new players (aside from the core) and new direction.

  13. Hawk Says:

If the Bucs hit 347, does the NFL give them a wildcard spot?

  14. Bucnut2 Says:

Yes joes that’s right. I want to get rid of the QB who has 54 TO in 42 games. Your stat proves the point; you can move the ball but if you turn it over, you lose. That’s why Winston winning % is about to go below 40% tomorrow night. Lots of stats, no wins. And oh by the why, Martin does not turn it over like Winston.

  15. Doctor Stroud Says:

I’d rather have a franchise record in wins.

  16. lightningbuc Says:

Yeah, well, that’s an indictment on Jaboo’s ability to make a big play.

  17. JimmyJack Says:

That stat is a testament to the talent we have on offense. Our inability to score and take leads showcases how that talent is being wasted.

  18. Bucnut2 Says:

I’m now watching the guy we should have drafted, Mariota, lead his team to a comeback win to go 9-5. Ummm let’s see would I rather have 9-5 MM or 2-7 JW this year? And who has more talent around him? Winston of course. MM doesn’t have an Evans, Djax, Brate or Howard.

  19. loggedontosay Says:

For those that speak the words garbage time, you sound like idiots. You all did not watch the games. If you all had watch the games, you would know the Bucs have not been in garbage time games.

  20. AlteredEgo Says:

BucNut….I am sure it is eating Koetter up….his vote was over ruled in that draft room…..I am sure it is eating Koetter up…..remember the 1st head to head first game of their rookie season here in the RayJay….JW pix 6….Mariota cut up Lovies’s D….I am sure it is eating Koetter up.

  21. ScottyinFatAntonio Says:

Just sad that even the 49ers will have a better record than the Bucs when all is said and done, though we will move up in the draft…so there is that.

  22. Bucnut2 Says:

AE- good point. I am sure it is.

  23. Bird Says:

    The smoes at it again.

I give you 49ers game. They haven’t won crap this year. I bet the head coach got all the heat this year. Then they get garrapolo and win 3 straight games he is starting. He won with the same guys as the other qbs

The quarteback is the most important position on the field. And look at the 49ers talent. I can’t name one receiver on their team.

Jameis average play is a big part of the problem. But hey. Keep blaming everyone else. Joespunchdrunklove4jameis.com

  24. Bird Says:

49ers game huge. Bucs with the 4th

  25. not there yet Says:

Since we can’t brag about win loss record we’re now at the ultimate low of comparing franchise records for first downs of a team that can’t score points. Sounds familiar? Dominating been the twenties but can’t even get field goals. Bet most off those are second half when usually the games are out of hand but ok…. Guess it’s just me but wouldn’t care about stats if we’re winning just saying

  26. loggedontosay Says:

    BucNut,

Emphasis, on Nut, you are exposing yourself. Mariota has less touchdown and more interceptions than Winston does. I label you and Alterego exposed.

  27. Bucnut2 Says:

We need to try to trade Winston while he still has some value. 1 more season and he’ll be as popular in NFL circles as Josh Freeman.

  28. Bucs_Sam Says:

Record pace for 1st Downs? Are you kidding me? Who cares about fake on things that don’t matter, how about the only record that matters, W’s.

I understand you feel a need to find things that JW is good at, but the most 1st downs? Make you stretch fully before you give us his record for 3rd down conversions on Monday as Matty Ice provides more TD’s and a W.

You compared JW to Bortles the other day and said that was silly, your right it was. Bortles secured the playoffs for his team today. I don’t know how many First Downs Bortles got today, but he has 10 W’s.

  29. Bird Says:

    Bucs Sam

    Touché

  30. Gobucs Says:

    @loggedontosay

    You moron.

Who cares who has the better stats of mm or Winston. The only thing that matters is wins.

And pretty sure the titans are better in that category. And Winston has way more toys than MM and still can’t win. Lmao idiot.

I wear my Winston jersey every week but that’s a stupid comment you made.

  31. loggedontosay Says:

If you do not care why are you commenting on the post?

  32. Oxycondoms Says:

I wonder if lynch would’ve gm’d the Bucs instead of 49ers looks like we are missing out on the up and coming coaches and gms. Glazers giving chances to guys that haven’t got chances for a reason

  33. loggedontosay Says:

    GoBucs,

I am sure you were looking in the mirror when type the word moron. Being that you reference to yourself as moron, I will also refer to you as a moron. Moron, Mariota is not the reason the Titans have a winning record just as Winston is not the reason the Bucs have a losing record. Dumbass. More appropriate than moran.

  34. AlteredEgo Says:

Oxyy are you saying bring on #99 as GM/HC/DC/HR all in one role? Brilliant!

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Wait since when did Mariota win any throwing titles or did his team win any playoff games?

What exactly are you guys so jealous of?

What do you guys wish we had Mariota now? For what, is that gonna win us a whole bunch of games………Last I checked we still can’t run the ball, stop the run or stop the pass.

You guys really think MM is that good? I doubt he’s been as elite as you guys talk him up to be.

  36. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

That’s a decent number for a franchise that has historically been known to spend more of it’s philosophy toward the defensive side of the ball, but when compared to franchises that have historically been offensive juggernauts, that’s a middle of the road in season stat. …jus sayin’ *golf clap*

  37. BrianBucs Says:

I guess garbage time stats and stats against teams playing soft because of leading and running clock still count.
Just shows stats are for losers

  38. Grt1 Says:

Big Ben threw a terrible int that cost the Steelers the game. I wonder if the Steelers fans are calling for another QB. Winston = franchise.

  39. BrianBucs Says:

    Joe

    Nice try, but no cigar

  40. Hodad Says:

Blake Bortles was about to be run out of J Ville till Tom Coughlin came along. Low, and behold, with a good defense, and running game he has his team in the playoffs, and with M.M. losing again today the Jags could have their first division title in what has been like forever. Wonder how good Jameis would look with the Jags D, and that running game.

  41. Broy34 Says:

Interesting bucnut because just like jameis Mariota gave his team the lead and lost. Just lost to the 9ers. Mariota has been downright awful and all of you are either moronic, clueless or laughably wrong

  42. Broy34 Says:

Yeah the packers bills panthers falcons patriots giants bears all garbage time games. Goodness gracious

  43. USFBUC Says:

Some you guys are just plain crazy, stop bashing Winston and go look at the stats for like 30 secs. I know you probably won’t so I will do it for you. Our passing offense is 6th in yards per game, 7th in total yards passing, we are right at the average for interceptions and sacks, and for the big stat most seem to attack – completion percent, we are 21st however just one extra completed pass per game and Winston is top ten in completetion percent too.

The inability in my opinion to win close games, score points, or keep the other team from scoring is on the coaching staff. Every week there are questionable decisions by the coaches and the Bucs have been in four of the games they lost this season and could easily be 8-5 right now all while having a terrible run game and a bottom of the barrel defense.

  44. BrianBucs Says:

    Grt1

IF the Steeler fans call for another QB, they definitely can have Winston.

  45. BrianBucs Says:

Alrighty you stat lovers here’s a big stat for you. This year Jameis is 2-8 as a starter. Franchise QB? Absolutely not

  46. Grt1 Says:

Brainless Buc Dak threw a pick should the Cowboys get another QB as well

  47. Lakeland Says:

A garbage team racking up garbage yards during garbage time….There’s garbage everywhere.

  48. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

For a websites that claims to be so skeptical of the use of statistics and metrics, even going out of your way to openly mock them, you guys sure do use a lot of bogus stats to try and “buttress” your arguments.

  49. FowlBall Says:

Ladies and Gentlemen: Sophistry at its finest!

  50. JimmyJack Says:

Ok so you guys can’t stand Winston as our QB. Like him or not he’s still going to be our QB next year in all likelihood.

Obviously the team still believes he will start playing better so why can’t you.

You don’t think if we can get a nice running game going it will help him play better? Do you really think he’s been that incapable and has shown no signs of ability?

I think it’s Dirks offense that’s hurting us and I don’t want him back. But if they decide to stay with him I’ll figure they must believe he can fix it and will support it.

All I’m saying is Winston will be back next year. You better be ready to support him if your gonna remain a fan.

Remember, we’re Buc fans. If it don’t work out we know how to take a bad season.

  51. Chrisco4Bucs Says:

    Dirk will not be back

  52. JimmyJack Says:

THat being said they better fire Dirk. His offense hasn’t done squat in two years and he’s been given every weapon imaginable…..It aren’t gonna work in a third year.

  53. JimmyJack Says:

    Chrisco……say it again, baby.

It just feels so good to hear it.

  54. Reach87 Says:

Nice post USF. For those posers who think that nothing (nothing) is good about this team…get gone. Stop watching Bucs games. Go root for the Pats, Steelers, Titans…whomever. OBTW, only one (1) team/city will be ultimately happy this year. 31 others will not. I’ll root for the Bucs (acknowledging the record, bad losses, and close losses). But also acknowledging the bright spots (as mentioned in this article). Its better than the regular bloodletting and crying some of you posters spew. Sad. Go Bucs!

  55. Lakeland Says:

    Against the Atlanta Falcons

    Atlanta, 23 1st downs
    Tampa Bay, 27 1st downs

    Total Yards
    Tampa Bay 373
    Atlanta 516

    Final Score
    Atlanta 34
    Tampa Bay 20

    So much for 1st downs

  56. BrianBucs Says:

    Grt1

IF the cowboys want another QB, they can have Winston

  57. Stevbobucsfan Says:

I don’t get s… about whats being said about bucs stats or Winton
…I ve watch every buc game this year and the offense have not been good but decent enough to win a lot more games. Even with Jameis erratic play a lot of times the biggest problems have been penalties when we make a big play, and a defense that’s just not done much this year. Does any one think if we had Brady or Rodgers on this particular team would we be winningj

  58. BrianBucs Says:

    Reach87

Yes the Bucs have a lot of bright spots, but so does every team in the NFL. Plus, every team has a talented roster with good players. Thats where coaching comes into play

  59. Ndog Says:

So for all you folks saying Jameis sucks cause the lack of wins this year you must also think he would be great if we had a kicker (NE), Hump didn’t fumble (Buff), Evan Smith didn’t block in the back (GB) or Martin didn’t fumble (Det). Cause if those things don’t happen we would probably be 8-4 right now and looking at the playoffs. But again you are so blind with hate for some reason you can’t see the truth. You want so bad to be right about Mariotta being better than Jameis it is killing you. Well guess what today, with the playoffs on the line Mariotta lost to the 49ers, the freaking 49ers!!! They have a worse record than us. Heck every team that is bad that we played we have beaten but not the great Mariotta lead Titans who play in the weakest division in football. You people are pathetic and really need to stop calling yourself Bucs fans cause Jameis is going to be here for a long long time.

  60. JimmyJack Says:

I think if we had Brady on this team and he got bumrushed the way Winston did in that Panthers game and the coach kept calling all those deep drop backs then Tom would have absolutely let Dirk have it on the sidelines.

  61. Ed Says:

Winston agent said” Please cut Winston, so he could join the long list of player’s the fans cut in Tampa.” Winston, would be a nice Quarterback for the Patriots, with a real coach. I hope this time the Owner’s do not let the fans or the media pick a coach.

  62. AceofAerospace Says:

4-9. 24 hours away from being 4-10. That’s all that matters.

  63. Lakeland Says:

The Bucs will be tied with the 49ers after their Monday Night humiliation.I said that they will get a Top-5 pick, maybe for the next 3-4 years.

  64. buddy Says:

How ridiculous a stat is that? NOBODY cares what this guy Scott Smith found. Its about a WINS and LOSS record. First downs don’t mean D1ck, if you lose the game. Is this guy just trying to validate his job to Team Glazer. What a brown-noser.

  65. R.O. Says:

I guess Bucnut Dumb@ss was watching a different Titans 49ers games then I was. Usually the team with the most points win the game. ‘Tard….

  66. Lakeland Says:

The 49ers actually are 3-0 with Jimmy Garoppolo as their starter. Next season we will see a different 49ers team.

  67. JimmyJack Says:

Hahaha buddy, it is a ridicilous stat. That’s what you get when your team is ridiculously bad.

  68. JimmyJack Says:

2 weeks more and this torture will all be over. I remember years ago when we were always good the seasons seemed to fly by.

Nowadays they just seem to drag on endlessly.

  69. Buc believer Says:

Wow has Joe reached for the stars on this one… YAWN!!!

  70. Ndog Says:

Koetter looks so done in his last interview on bucs.com I mean he looks like he doesnt even want to be coaching anymore. Wow I recommend watching that cause man he looks like a beaten man.

  71. The Anomaly Says:

Sorry Joe…I am a fan but this is a joke, right?

  72. ruggyup Says:

BFD – analytics are something to sell ownership, facts do not lie, Bucs are irrelevant!

  73. ben Says:

Bucs should have picked M.M. in the draft .. only locals would say Winston is better, not nationally .

  74. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

I think we have the modern day (post 2000) records for most 1st downs, most missed receivers, most bad play calls, and weakest defense.

    Congratulations, Bucs.

  75. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

    Oh, and least TD’s?

  76. BrianBucs Says:

In my opinion the Bucs play in the toughest division in football. If the season ended today the other three teams in the NFC South would all make the playoffs while the Bucs sit with only four wins.
The Bucs have the 4th best team in the division, the 4th best QB in the division and probably the 4th best coaching staff and GM in the division. And looking at the other teams’ personel, QB’s, and coaching, does anybody really see any of this changing? Eventually Drew Breed will retire and that should change things some. But how can you expect to make the playoffs when you keep finishing last in your own division?
Bucs need to blow up everything and take things in an entirely new and different direction because what they are trying to do now just isn’t working. If they don’t we can all watch them be cellar dwellers for a lot of seasons. An entirely new approach is needed

  77. BrianBucs Says:

    Brees*

  78. Bucs68 Says:

Bucs don’t play defense. Koetter calls and approaches the game like we do play defense, thus we are 4-8.

  79. Trubucfan22 Says:

AE- except mariota is a worse qb than Winston. So it probably isn’t bothering Koetter too much.

  80. Season Is Over Says:

We love all the pro-anything good articles coming to the defense of a horrible team before Gruden’s night. It is sad when Gruden’s induction is the highlight of the season. The 2017 Buccaneers are a complete and utter failure from top to bottom.

  81. passthebuc Says:

Joe. you keep up your love affair with JW and Johnnie football is going to be disappointed.

  82. NFLNut Says:

    **********************
    BUCNUT2 …. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

Not only has Mariota been HORRIBLE this year with his 30th ranked passer rating (but hey, he’s better than DeShone Kizer, hahaha) and with his 12 TDs and 14 INTs (numbers that would make Tim TeBow vomit) … the Titans LOST today.

How did they lose … well, they had a chance to gain a first down to ice the game with about one minute left but instead of letting Mariota throw, they ran up the gut and kicked a FG … the Titans coaching staff has NEVER trusted Mariota and seems to have less trust in him now than ever … he’s always worked with a limited playbook, has always relied on his ground game to carry him and basically only throws out of play-action to wide open receivers … HE’S A JOKE, A GIMMICKY GAME-MANAGER AND NOT A LEGIT QB.

Jameis on the other hand is about to become the only QB in the history of the NFL to throw for 11,000 yards before his 24th birthday and in his 7 healthy games this year is #1 in the entire NFL at 305 passing yards per game.

YOU SIR ARE A LOON WITH AN EXTREMELY LOW FOOTBALL IQ.

Wanting the #30th ranked QB instead of a kid who is #1 in the entire NFL in passing yards per game when healthy and has an infinitely higher passer rating, simply because the #30 QB’s team has more wins would be like Packers fans demanding the team trade Aaron Rodgers, as he’s only won 4 out of 7 games this year … for Blake Bortles or Case Keenum … LOON!

    **********************

  83. lurker Says:

i said winston over mariota too.

that can’t change. if we are in position to draft a qb this year, should we? probably not going to.

jameis has had some bone-headed interceptions and fumbles. the silly people comparing winston to roethlisberger and rodgers because they lost and threw int’s are crazy. jameis also is inaccurate especially on deep passes.

compare winston to goff, wentz, prescott or other young qb’s. i am hoping this is an aberration, and he finally matures on and off the field, and makes the jump next year that he was supposed to this year.

  84. BrianBucs Says:

    Lurker

That’s what we all hope. But everybody can only wait so long

  85. lurker Says:

“That’s what we all hope. But everybody can only wait so long”

just like this team and making the playoffs, winning in the playoffs, then superbowl

every year hope goes up, optimism abounds
    every year hope gets dashed

  86. Grt1 Says:

Brainless Buc Derek Carr just fumbled the game away for the raiders should they also cut Carr. Winston = Franchise

  87. Capt.Tim Says:

I dont care if they’ve gotten a moiilon first downs!!
What matters is that Jameis has won 2 games this season!
    Two!!!!!!!!

Trying to say 2 win Jameis is an NFL QB, because he has gotten alot of first downs
Is like trying to reach around the world, to scratch your own ass!!

  88. BrianBucs Says:

    Lurker

    Yep, it’s a Buc’s Life

  89. Architek Says:

I’m sorry I just can’t focus on anything positive about arguably the worse franchise in the NFL – why is football better when the Bucs don’t play?????

  90. BrianBucs Says:

    Capt. Tim

Well Said. Stats are for losers

  91. Bucsfan951 Says:

How do you explain all of those first downs and only averaging less than 20 points a game? Bucs average like 8 points the entire first half of games, 3 points in the third quarter and then more than 8 points in the fourth quarter. You can blame the Bucs defense all you want but the Bucs offense is just, if NOT MORE, disappointing than the defense.

  92. NFLNut Says:

    ***************

“Stats are for losers” = what garbage players who happen to play on good TEAMS say … and the low-football IQ crowd.

FRAN TARKENTON, was 8-27 in his first 3 years … he was even 60-82 in his first 11 years!

TROY AIKMAN was 14-24 in his first 3 years

WARREN MOON was 12-33 in his first 3 years

JOE NAMATH retired with a career LOSING RECORD!

Even JOE MONTANA who won a SB in his 3rd year had a LOSING RECORD in 3 of his first 4 years!

Yet … ALL FIVE OF THE ABOVE QBs are in the HALL OF FAME … and four of the five played in a SB with three of the five winning at least one ring!

Good TEAMS win games whether they have good QBs or not and bad TEAMS lose games whether they have good QBs or not … common sense.

The Jameis-haters low-football IQ just cracks me up.

    *******************

  93. not there yet Says:

Idiot the first overall pick in a draft doesn’t get traded he gets cut or is not resigned. So easy to start over with another rookie QB that may or may not work out huh. Hate fans like you that think anything can be solved via trade. What do you think the other 53 players will do if you trade Winston for anything other than of field issues? Everyone that can will jump ship and then they’d be no reason anyone would want to coach here for sure. Your the irrational fans people make fun of and the ones the glazers ignore. Only way to tell if Winston is the problem is to get rid of koetter if course the entire team will play better once him and his staff is gone

  94. nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    @notthereyet

Thank you, thank you thank you!

You saved me a lot of wasted time and energy clapping back by the insane, unrealistic, no business IQ, of anyone who is thinking you try drafting another QB when the needle can still move upward with the one you have.

Coaches can make a difference…Keenum for example…give me an educated break.

    @NFLNUT👏
the haters may not enjoy your stats but keep em coming…maybe you need to show the winning games of teams that overcome in the 4th quarter for “the garbage time enthusiasts” LOL😆

  95. NFLNut Says:

^ I appreciate the love bro … none of the Jameis-haters can mess with me on factual data and NFL history as all they have are baseless opinions and all they do is whine … they sort of crack me up though as they’re so clueless it’s hilarious.

  96. Duke Says:

    NFL NUT,

Do a bit of research on Terry Bradshaw. I think it would be enlightening to see

  97. darin Says:

Its not Jameis boneheads, its dirk. No idea how people dont see this. You will next year when jameis is thriving in a different offense. Dirk continually asks him to do stuff he is not good at.

  98. Hodad Says:

Pay attention, Blake Bortles was a considered a bust. Fans wanted him gone. It took a good defense, a good running game, a no sense tough minded coach, a G.M. who signed the right F.A.’s, and drafted well, they just made the playoffs.

  99. Bucnjim Says:

Still like Winston but this has not been his year. As I have posted before we have not been able to score in the first half of games which always leaves the team in a huge whole to climb out of. The majority of success the Bucs have had is in the fourth quarter when the other team is just protecting the large lead.

  100. Jmarkbuc Says:

The only Franchise that JW could be the ” Franchise QB” for is this one .

Horrible, terrible QB play, poor scouting dept, goofy GM, softie head coach and clueless DC.

Yep, you are the face of the Franchise Jaboo!

  101. DoNUTS Says:

JBF trying too hard to justify this terrible offense as anything but offensive! Spin the wheels as much as you want, Buc fan knows this team needs major change, which could include the QB. When Koetter strolled Martin out there at starting RB- he lost my loyalty. He is clueless on personnel and stubborn- bad combo for NFL coach. I expect the NFL to address the JW suspension post superbowl (traditional timing).

To date, I have said- we should give Winston one more year (makes sense in NFL contract world). BUT If we get a new coach (likely) and he gets a suspension greater than 2 games in 2018 then see you later Winston is the right move. Any suspension means he cannot be trusted; his big failure while in college hence why Jimbo suspended him and basically booted him at end (rumor behind the scenes).

On Winston remarkable first down record-
How many plays over 30 yards (first down) again? ZERO!
How many wins does this first down record give us? ZERO!

Are we playing for WINS or ZEROS? C’mon fellas.

  102. DoNUTS Says:

Does Fitz get credit for his first downs during his 2 game stretch? or are we giving those to Winston to justify his stinky season? Let rerun the numbers and see if this team record is in reach WITHOUT Fitz otherwise its a team record. The image of Winston and Koetter or the inference they are solely responsible is inaccurate.

  103. Grt1 Says:

Holy smokes man Jameis is 23 what in the hell do you guys want. Give him time to grow . He isn’t the reason the Bucs are losing.
