Ira Kaufman’s Week 9 Picks Against The Spread

November 4th, 2017

Welcome to a weekly feature on JoeBucsFan.com. Joe has challenged Ira Kaufman, Tampa Bay’s only Hall of Fame voter, to pick against the spread this season for a $500 prize. Every Friday, Ira types out his picks for each Friday-through-Monday game. If he hits at 53 percent or better for the regular season, then Ira gets $500 in gift cards to Abe’s Place in Clearwater, home of historically amazing food and 44 craft beers on tap. Feel free to send Ira your stone cold locks on Twitter, @ikaufman76. The sage of Tampa Bay sports always appreciates a tip.

The common definition of stupidity is doing the same thing time aftertime and expecting a different result.

Because my picks against the spread have been stupid, I’m changing my routine. I’m sitting in a different room, in a different chair, sipping a different drink.

If that doesn’t work, I’m hitting up Madame Natalie next week for a psychic reading.

Last week’s 3-8 slate dropped me to 41-67 for the season, a 38 percent success rate that still dwarfs the 2-5 start of the Buccaneers. A new week brings new opportunities for a soothsayer looking for some momentum midway through the season.

BRONCOS plus 7 1-2 at EAGLES. Philly sits atop the NFL’s power rankings, but Denver is desperate to remain competitive in the AFC West. The Broncos still boast an elite defense and you can be certain that Von Miller will introduce himself to Mr. Wentz.

RAMS minus 3 1-2 at GIANTS. Big changes are in store at the Meadowlands, where Eli Manning doesn’t have enough help. Jared Goff shows no signs of slowing down as the point man for an offense averaging 30 points per game.

SAINTS minus-7 vs. BUCS. The absence of Brent Grimes is crippling as Mike Smith’s defense tries to frustrate a Hall of Fame quarterback. Drew Brees is living large, finally surrounded again by a decent ground game and a legit defense.

JAGUARS minus 5 1-2 vs. BENGALS. Jacksonville senses this could be a special season and a ferocious pass rush led by Calais Campbell will make things difficult for Andy Dalton.

FALCONS minus-1 at PANTHERS. Cam Newton will miss Kelvin Benjamin, one of his few scary weapons, and Atlanta is due for a breakout game. The loser of this divisional matchup is in trouble in the NFC South.

COLTS plus-7 at TEXANS. You can’t lose a Deshaun Watson and a J.J. Watt and not feel sorry for yourself. Watson will be with the Texans in spirit, but his absence haunts this franchise.

TITANS minus 3 1-2 vs. RAVENS. This matchup could end up determining an AFC wild-card berth in two months. Both clubs feature outstanding special teams.

CARDINALS minus-2 at 49ERS. Arizona has won the past five meetings as the 49ers seek an initial victory for Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch.

SEAHAWKS minus-7 vs. REDSKINS. Russell Wilson has been on a roll after a slow start, but the running game remains shaky. Washington is in danger of falling out of the NFC East race.

COWBOYS even-up vs. CHIEFS. The Chiefs thrive on turnover margin, where they are plus-10 despite allowing 392 yards per game. This could be the last time Dallas fans see Ezekiel Elliott for awhile.

DOLPHINS plus-3 vs. RAIDERS. Both of these sloppy teams come off lopsided losses on the road, Miami has enough defense to hound Derek Carr into some key mistakes.

PACKERS plus 2 1-2 vs. LIONS. Green Bay has to prove there is life beyond Aaron Rodgers. A bye week gave Mike McCarthy time to make a few adjustments. Detroit can’t seem to make enough plays in crunch time.

As a sports writer you should have a insite into football and as a bettor I think I will bet the side you say will lose and win money that way.
