The Charles Kelly Of The NFL

October 22nd, 2017

Bucs have their NFL version of a terrible college DC.

Joe used to rag on (and still does) Lovie Smith for his horrid defenses.

Joe used to go bananas on Raheem Morris for his ill-prepared defenses.

So Joe has to be fair here even though Joe likes Mike Smith a great deal and has much respect for the Bucs defensive coordinator. His defenses this season are some of the worst in Bucs history, and that includes Lovie’s and that includes Morris’ and Joe is willing to lay cash this outfit Smith has to work with has much more talent than Lovie or Morris ever had.

That is, except for defensive end, where Styles White and Michael Ghost Johnson would be an upgrade from what the Bucs now have conning both Team Glazer’s accountants and Bucs fans as edge rushers.

And to be honest, Smith’s defense is why it is highly unlikely the Bucs make a playoff run.

How bad is it? Why it’s Charles Kelly bad.

For those that do not know, Kelly took over the defense for Florida State when current Alabama defensive coordinator and then-FSU defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, hours after winning a national championship, was told by his fiancé that it was either her or the girlfriend (allegedly) and if it was the fiancé, he had to leave Tallahassee, so the rumors go. Allegedly.

Pruitt chose the fiance, and thus left Tallahassee. And FSU’s defenses have largely been atrocious ever since, despite having some of the best talent to work with in college football.

Sound familiar?

The two hallmarks of Kelly’s defenses have been that he is completely and totally buffaloed (pun intended) by mobile quarterbacks, and his defenses week in and week out cough up scoring drives late, often when all Florida State needed was one stop to win a game.

Earlier in today’s game, Joe asked on Twitter if Lovie Smith had snuck onto the bench and pulled a stunt like former Mets manager Bobby Valentine wearing a Groucho Marx mask? As it turned out, it was Kelly who crawled into the coaches’ box and took over for Mike Smith.

Exactly like Florida State, Kelly Smith set up his defense to cough up a touchdown lead late in the game which all but doomed the Bucs.

No, Smith’s defense wasn’t completely horrible today, but pretty bad given that Buffalo had one of the worst offenses in the NFL. To allow a sh!t offense to drive 75 yards late on three plays to tie the game is completely unacceptable.

You think Team Glazer is having buyer’s remorse right about now for re-upping Smith to a new contract last winter?

I got $ on the Fire Mike Smith billboard!

  2. Ray Rice Says:

Mr. Beastin also needs to get cut. The MF tackles like he has Vaseline all over his white Michael Jackson gloves.

  3. AlteredEgo Says:

There is NO reason the athletes on the Buc defense can not execute Smith’s defense….I saw horrible tackling and pursuit

  4. Buc believer Says:

If they are not a lot of Buc fans are

  5. JonBuc Says:

And to think Mike Smith was allegedly close to landing a head coaching gig…even with a fresh haircut reported on by the Joes….to now the worst D-Coordinator in the NFL. Wow…

  6. Ray Rice Says:

And let’s not forget Aunt Geraldine. Who only shows up when it’s time to do an interview or watch the premiere of the Avengers.

  7. Roy T. Buford Says:

I have never seen so many DBs hoot and holler like they made a play when they were beat and the unpressured QB just overthrew the receiver. This is the worst D in the league, and third from worst team in the league. They aren’t clicking. They have gotten worse as the season has gone on.

  8. Cometowin2 Says:

We’re paying Mike Smith the top money for any DC. In return we are getting the absolute worst defense in team history!!! Worse than Leeman Bennett. Wow.

He needs to be fired immediately.

  9. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

In hindsight, the Bucs’ defensive improvement in the second half of last season was fool’s gold. We were creating turnovers at an unprecedented pace, and getting lucky with stops on 3rd down. Teams studied the tape, made offensive adjustments to attack this defense in all of its soft spots (of which there are many), and now are able to move the ball with ease on 3rd down and avoid turnovers. Of course Mike Smith is NOT making any adjustments to counter, and thus the Bucs are stuck in arrested development. Koetter was a fine OC but clearly cannot handle the duties of head coach and playcaller. I think his head coaching style is leading to complacency, laziness, and a lack of physicality. FLAT! We need to replace Licht who has failed to improve the roster where we need it most, on both sides of the line. And we need to replace most of our coaching staff.

So it’s still “A Bucs life” after all…”Seige the day” lmao.

  11. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

“No, Smith’s defense wasn’t completely horrible today”

    Joe… You are fake news.

  12. Eric Says:

Is everyone finally satisfied that muscle hamster is just barely an average running back?

He is such a drive killer. Every time we get something going we have to go to the no gain or two yard loss hand off to him.

Dirk you better open it up more and try and outscore people. Complete game ain’t working.

  13. Roy T. Buford Says:

Pregame Derrick Brooks had the lucid point of the day: these players need to play FOR each other, not WITH each other. They don’t have the drive as a team, not on O, not on D. Overall, this is a bad football team.

  14. Rayjay1122 Says:

Worst defence in the league. Sad part is that there are talented guys on our defense but something is seriously wrong with the tackling, coverage and pass rush. I guess that is about everything.

  15. Rrsrq Says:

Wasn’t that the best signing of the offseason, since we didn’t have 17 million to pay Calais Campbell

  16. Curse of Gruden Says:

    Time to trade McCoy.

  17. Joeypoppems Says:

Remember when keeping Mike Smith was the “most important signing of the offseason”?

    Good times…..

  18. jimmyjack Says:

The offense aint that much better. Another no-show in the 1st half. Another hole dug. We consistently start off with a one-dimensional offense and consistently go nowhere at the start.

We never sieze momentum of a game and never will from this garbage gameplan that has never and will never generate any 1st half points.

  19. AlteredEgo Says:

Where are ” the sapling carriers” ?

  20. Roy T. Buford Says:

Here is why they lost (other than the obvious “less points” reason):
    – Another game where the O can’t find the end zone for more than half the game.
    – Another game where the D can’t stop the run, can’t stop the pass.
    – Another game where stupid penalties kills drives, or keep the other team’s going.
    – Another game of bad play calling.
    – Another game of mistakes in the end where they seek ways to lose a late lead, more than one (D collapse, costly personal foul, offensive fumble).

Same old Bucs. If this keeps up, YES, Koetter’s seat is warm.

  21. Ateonetree Says:

Trade Mccoy and convert to a 3-4

  22. Stanglassman Says:

Hated it when Mike Smith fumbled that pass catch in the game winning drive with two minutes on the clock.

  23. Brooks55hof Says:

Couldn’t find a sucker to take McCoy !!

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Mike Smith has dramatically more talent here than Lovie did – and Lovie had a top 10 defense.

    Those are the actual facts.

  25. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

In all fairness Joe, if you were paying attention you knew this defense has a major lack of talent. I have been saying for 6 months now the defense played above their actual abilities last year. My hope was the offense could overcome it. Today they came close but the meltdown at the end was too much to overcome. Time to start looking at the draft and free agency and they need to go all in on defense to get rid of this sh1t show we are seeing now!

  26. Joe Says:

Is everyone finally satisfied that muscle hamster is just barely an average running back?

Careful. The Doug Martin apologists have a hit out for Joe for typing such things.

  27. Gobucs Says:

And to think the Bucs thought they didn’t need calais Campbell lol.

    Idiot organization

  28. bobby4919 Says:

And to think we were all worried he’d get a head coaching position and leave us. 🙁

  29. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs need to go back and look at some old films from 1977-1981. When Tom Bass was the DC and they was running the 3-4 defense. Cecil Johnson, Dewey Selmon, Richard “Batman” Wood, David Lewis was the Linebackers. They could do the same thing, with the group that they have now. Those years produced one of the Bucs best defensive units in their history.

  30. 813bucboi Says:

GMC is a joke!!!…no push rush makes it hard to watch…. Smitty is a flat out liar!!!!… McClain played as far back as VHG….at least VHG stepped up today!!!… defense is trash!!!..GO BUCS!!!

  31. 813bucboi Says:

    Don’t Hide!!!

    @LC
    @realist

    GO BUCS!!!

  32. Jim Says:

    I do…kotter will be next…something has to change…

  33. Waterboy Says:

    Too many missed tackles today.

  34. TheLittleGrayCells Says:

LOL this is so true. Sucks to be a Nole fan and Bucs fans these days. Such high expectations, such terrible results.

  35. Capt.Tim Says:

    Our Defensive Ends
Robert Ayers- 1 sack , no QB hits
Noah Spence- no sacks, No QB hits
Will Gholsten- No Sacks, No QB hits

Our Linebackers- no Sacks, No QB hits
Our Defensive backs- no sacks, No QB hits

The only person to hit the QB( other than Ayers sack)?
Gerald McCoy- 2 QB hits, 6 QB pressures.

Other Than McCoy- no one on the team has ANY PASS RUSH SKILLS!

Until we get A DE that can rush the passer, we will continue to lose.

Ive been saying it for years. So has others.
Its still true. And its that simple

  36. Silent_Partner Says:

It’s not Mike Smith. The Buc defensive players are highly overrated. They have a few good players, but nothing more. Charles Kelly is simply incompetent.

  37. tval Says:

But fsu lost their qb. What’s smith’s excuse?

  38. tval Says:

Kelly is trash tho. Jimbo may lose his job for that alone

  39. Silent_Partner Says:

Jimbo has a $50 million guaranteed contract. He’s not losing his job, but I am one of the few in the fan base who thinks this is the beginning of the end, and he won’t be able to fix this if he fires Kelly at the end of the year. It sounds kind of ridiculous even typing “if,” but that’s how bad it’s gotten to where he kept this underperforming guy this long in the first place when it was obvious after year one he wasn’t cut out for the job and definitely was clear by the end of last year. When coaches let things slide this far in the wrong direction because of complacency or whatever, I just think it’s stale for them there, and he’ll need a fresh start or just will never bounce back where he is. If he chooses to stay at FSU, I hope that’s not the case, but history says otherwise.

  41. Not there yet Says:

It’s time to get rid of the holdovers from Mark Dominick era. They are infecting the new players with that losing mentality because it’s all they know. Who comes out and relaxed after the first winning season in over a decade without making the playoffs AFTER adding more talent?

The big 3 should be on the hot seat. Smith koetter and licht for not addressing the defensive line at all. Drafting a defensive end that can’t be a full time starter because he’s too small
