99 Reasons The Defense Must Be 49ers-Ready

October 13th, 2016

KaepernickEven if vegan-fragile Colin Kaepernick doesn’t survive his first start of the season Sunday against the surging Bills defense, the Bucs have serious studying to do.

Per BSPN Radio stat nerds, the 49ers have run 99 zone-read plays this season through five games. With Kaepernick starting, those 20 plays per game could bounce up to 30.

When Joe thinks of defending the zone-read and the Buccaneers, Joe can’t shake the memory of Lovie Smith getting abused by the Titans on opening day last year. Somehow, Lovie and his team of defensive gurus were the only ones who didn’t realize the Titans would run some form of a read-option to keep rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota comfortable in his NFL debut.

The result was an epic horror show that saw Tennessee roll up a 42-7, third-quarter lead — before they finished the season with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Joe suspects new defensive coordinator Mike Smith will be ready for Chip Kelly’s new offense in San Francisco in two weeks, when the Bucs return from their bye week. But it’s new territory for Smith. His Falcons teams in 2013 and 2014 never faced Kelly’s Philadelphia Eagles.

One would think the Bucs would be a good matchup for Kelly’s offense, given the talents and athleticism of their linebacker corps. The return of Gerald McCoy (if he returns) will be such a huge factor in this game. If the Bucs can get healthy up the gut of their defense, their chances of beating the run-first Niners will skyrocket.

We sure as hell were ready for Kelly’s Eagles last year. Man that was a fun game to watch

  2. BigStinky Says:

The Bucs can’t afford to lose that game. It’s a must-win if they want to be better than 6-10 this year.

  3. Hawaiian Buc Says:

We should always match up well with a Chip Kelly offense because it is predicated on being able to run the ball. Once they pound you on the run game, it opens up the passing game. If we do have a strength on defense, it is stopping the run. That being said, our team is anything but predictable, so who knows what’s going to happen.

  4. Lunchbox Says:

The bye week is coming at a good time for us, with all our injuries along the defensive line and elsewhere. It will also give the Bucs another week to prepare and rest up. But in this case, as was the case last week I believe our best defense is a sustained drive, ball control offense. It doesn’t have to be pretty, but as long as we stay on the field and score TOUCHDOWNS, (we simply can’t count on our kicker), we keep their read option offense off the field. If they can’t get on the field, they can’t score. If the can’t score, they can’t win. Simple as that

Lunchbox: How can you say that with the kicker we gave up a draft choice in two different rounds to get. A move that made me turn off the TV. What a great pick (for the rest of the NFL).

Americas quarterback vs anti america quarterback bowl

Maybe our military brat keyshawn jackson do something patriotic and play better

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

Must win to come even stevens. Bucs got 2 weeks to prepare. With most guys healthy, we ought to be able to give the 49ers a run for their money.

  8. Buccaneers Says:

I have no confidence that we are better than San Francisco. That will have to be proven next week. One thing’s for certain is that our offense needs to show up. We already know we can’t trust our defense and our offense has been incapable for a month now. 4 turnovers Monday night and they had six points. you are usually going to get your ass kicked when you do that. Still waiting for this team to show progression and that they know what they are doing. It’s been 5 weeks and they were lucky enough to skate away with two wins. It’s been long enough under these new coaches time to put up already

  9. uckinator Says:

Pound Kaepernick ! That’s if he survives Buffalo.

  10. Willy D Buc Says:

PFT’s vegan position is complete BS. I know many vegan athletes and body builders because I am one, and I have no problem getting enough protein for my growing muscle mass.

  11. LakelandBuc Says:

We should beat the 49ers, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs have always been abysmal when it comes to playing out on the West Coast for some reason. Hopefully that won’t be the case since this game comes right after our Bye week. No guarantee we’ll get everyone back, but 2 weeks of rest can’t hurt. The one thing that jumps out in the 49ers last 4 straight losses is that they’re only averaging about 25 mins time-of-possession per game. Not giving up huge yardage, but giving up lots of pts per game. Strange.

  13. Turd Koetter Says:

    @Willy D Buc

I’m sure you get plenty of protein Willy D. You put the D in Willy and Willy gets big!

  14. Kobe Faker Says:

McCoy will be nursing one of her boo boos she will be a non factor like she is 9 out of 10 games.. Std meaningless first quarter sack followed by second half disappearing act or maybe a broken nail. Most fragile mentally weak overrated buc in history

  21. pick6 Says:

we will see if Kap even survives 60 minutes vs the bills, but if he does this just feels like one where we get shown up by a QB that every subsequent team dominates. we are still too easily fooled by misdirection, and even as Kaepernick’s arm has regressed i doubt his burst on the ground is gone. If he spots a couple guys overpursuing or out of position, i can see us being on the wrong side of a sportscenter 80+ year scramble.
