Lovie Smith calls an early shot and boasts about his past scores

Hope for 2015 is dead. Even Lovie Smith declared the year finished and tossed in the garbage yesterday.

But Christmas is still on the calendar, so it was fitting that Lovie would talk about the universal Christmas, the 2016 NFL Draft.

The Bucs’ overlord of football operations was asked by a fan on the Buccaneers Radio Network last night whether he was excited to fill defensive holes in next year’s draft. And if he liked what how the one defensive pick of his two-year regime panned out last year.

Lovie glowed about Alexander, and a twinkle in Lovie’s eye appeared to flow through the WDAE-AM 620 airwaves.

It sounds like Lovie wants defensive talent from Santa Claus.

“You have an idea what direction you’re going to go early on.” Lovie said.

He added: “We really hit it on our drafts, getting good young players that are building the foundation of our team. I think it’s kind of safe the direction we’ll be going in the draft this year.”

Whoa! The legal tobacco water pipes are cooking at One Buc Palace. The smoke is flowing early from the draft war room. The Bucs are going defense!

Joe’s not buying it so fast.

The Bucs need to attack free agency and, as of now, have significant issues and question marks at wide receiver. And can you ever go wrong drafting the right offensive lineman? Jason Licht has nailed three out of the four O-linemen he’s selected. One more would be awfully to cement lasting health of America’s Quarterback.

Bless his heart. Lovie thinks he knows what the Bucs head coach is going to do next year.

  2. Phil Says:

We can only hope that Lovie is not here next year for the draft.

  3. Tbbucs3 Says:

Can we cut Dontee Dye? Humpries won he undrafted WR battle.

  4. Captain Crunch Says:

Take personal decisions away from Lovie, he’s shown hes not a good talent evaluator. Remember he gutted half the team when he came last year and brought in “his guys” for his first two seasons with the team and the only reason we improved this year was b/c of Jameis, Martin, Kwon and Dirk.

  5. CL Bucs Says:

Oline? Please, with how deep the draft is in d linemen, I think the tea leaves are showing DE and DT in the early rounds. I’d like to see us get a defensive back or two as well. We NEED a WR in free agency and if we can get Mario Williams, we will be set.

  6. lurker Says:

most decisions people make are personal… 😉

  7. Mike10 Says:

Now I was hard on giggles-Licht, admittedly, but he’s proven me wrong. So if he was the one weighing heavy on our picks last year, then I’m confident he can build upon that knowledge this draft.

Hopefully he recognizes the traits to look for in a successful pick, because this draft and offseason is equally, if not MORE important than last years. We need a lot of “hits”.

  8. thegregwitul Says:

Put the crack pipe down, Tiny Tim. Please. For your own health. The Bucs have their QB, they need to surround him with some more weapons.

  9. HarlemBuc Says:

Tiny Tim… Dude. Homie. Bro there’s 31 other teams please be a fan of one of them, but we bucs are rebuilding and your posts rankle this true fan family
Christmas is coming, ask Santa for some sandals and kick several rocks… Thanks!

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs have tripled their wins from last year, and improved considerably on the offensive side of the ball. One excellent draft (2015) plus a full year of experience has made a huge difference. One more excellent draft (please Santa) should allow the Bucs to improve to 9-10 wins next year. (I say again … Please Santa).

  11. martinii Says:

We drafted our franchise QB last year. Our running game is set, I agree, one more O-Lineman would help protect Winston and possibly a WR. So I think Defense, Especially pass-rush and pass-def is our priority. Keep in mind first round def picks can be bust (Exclude McCoy, Sapp). With only six pics I might be inclined to trade back, try to get something for Glennon, and hope another Alexander falls to us on day 2. One good thing is we don’t have to tank to get a top pick. lets beat Chicago and ruin Carolina’s season. need to keep going forward.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Lovie will be here next year and let’s hope he and Licht have another good draft.

    I say….DE, CB & S with the first 3 picks…..order depends on player available…

We can get an experienced WR & Olineman in FA.

  13. GhostofSchiano Says:

AT JOE….Has Lovie or Licht commented on this story? –

If we could land him in Free Agency………WOW!

  14. Pick6 Says:

what percentage of Free Agents signed to be key players or even above average starters worked out? Jeremy Maclin, (eventually) Suh, and….am i forgetting anyone? rotational players or role players abound in FA and you can have some good results there, but we have premiere positions to fill. as frustratingly slow as it is, the draft is the way out of purgatory…and we still have more big holes than we have draft picks to fill them with. it’s going to be a tricky offseason and unfortunately i don’t project us being ready to tangle with the big boys yet with a batch of young CBs, a possible rookie pass rusher or two, question marks with WR depth, and god knows what at safety. even if we draft the perfect guys for 3 or 4 of those holes, it would be folly to expect them all to play at a high level from the first NFL snap of their lives all the way into the postseason in their rookie season.

  15. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

DE, CB, OL, WR in that order. Free agency could flip flop OL WR

  16. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ Joe

Your website sucks!!!!!! You are the only site on the web where I post that allows other posters to post under someone else username. We have pointed this issue out many times and yet you do nothing about it. And you want people to take your site seriously? This is a kindergarten site. I mean really elementary!!!! Fake Tiny Tim above you are truly a PU$$Y

  17. Tiny Tim Says:

And all you guys keep responding to the FAKE Tiny Tim. Look up all of the post before the draft and after and you will see I ie Tiny Tim was one of the biggest Jameis supporters on this site. Do not feed the Pu$$Y troll fake Tiny Tim above that loves Mariota and trashes Jameis. I mean Joe come on. Fix it already!!

    ________________________________________________________________

I mean lol…you guys have the same name verbatim. Go with Tiny Timothy maybe? Otherwise I can’t honestly know who is who. Then again we have several “The Kevin’s” as well.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

gotta draft cb,de,oline,wr…dip into FA for de,oline and wr…GO BUCS!!!

  20. The Buc Realist Says:

Unless I hear it differently from Joe, I think “Tiny Tim” is just bi-polar!!!!!!

  21. CAN'T FIX IT Says:

DIRK IS THE ONE WHO PUT TOGETHER THIS OFFENCE NOT LOVIE , LOVIE SUCKS AND NEEDS TO GO , NEXT YEAR WILL HAVE A STEP BACK IF LOVIE IS STILL HERE !!3-13 MAYBE 2-14,, BECAUSE THEY WILL PLAY BETTER TEAMS WITH BETTER RECORDS NEXT YEAR !!!FIRE LOVIE BEFORE IT’S TO LATE !!!!!!!

  22. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ realist

Joe has already acknowledged the fake midseason when the imposter first popped up when he wrote back to me that the problem was fixed when i first brought to joe’s attention. Unlike many on this site, i do not change my name over and over again to hide from an incorrect take. I stand behind all my opinions and i would appreciate it if i can keep my own name without having to worry about an imposter. This is supposed to be a site where fans can bounce ideas off one another. What good does it do if we all can post under bucrightoff?

  23. godzilla13 Says:

We already have a top 5 right tackle. Oh..I forgot..he is inactive? A deal with DE Mario Williams makes sense. Because we need two DE and it could take some time to develop if we go after both in the draft. It would also free us up to go DE, CB, S, DT in the draft.

    1) DE Emmanuel Ogbah – Oklahoma State
    2) CB Tre’Davious White – LSU
    3) SS Miles Killebrew – Southern Utah
    4) DT Chris Jones – Mississippi State 6′ 5″ 305

Can you imagine DE Mario Williams on one side and DE Emmanuel Ogbah on the other? Throw in DT Gerold McCoy and DT Chris Jones (6’5″-305) with SS Miles Killebrew (6’2″-225) and we have a defense.

  24. grafikdetail Says:

lovie hired Dirk & signed off on the offensive draft picks…so lovie put it together LOL

  25. Dave Says:

I don’t care what they get in FA, they are still going DE and DB in the first 2 rounds next year. HAVE TO!
After that there will be WR and O Line, in today’s nfl, once the foundation is set, you should be drafting an O Lineman, a pass rusher, and a WR in the middle and late rounds every single year.

  26. Ocala Says:

I’d love the Bucs to get some defensive help in free agency:
    Janori Jenkins CB St Louis
    Mohamed Wilkerson DL NY Jets
    Nigel Bradham LB Buffalo
    Eric Berry S Kansas City.

If the Bucs got those guys they could truly go after the best available in the draft

    1Jalen Ramsey DB Florida State
    2 Tyler Boyd WR Pitt
    3 James Bullard DE Florida
4 La’ron Clark OT Texas Tech

  27. Ocala Says:

5 Karl Joseph S West Virginia
    6 Desmond King CB Iowa
6 Joe Haeg OT North Dakota State
