Living on the shores of Lake Superior has been a wonderful way to enjoy the summer. But I missed seeing the Bucs. But I have Direct TV’s NFL ticket so I’m excited about today’s game.
One of the additional bennies is that I’ve been able to watch all the games.
Carolina looked less than impressive for a long while against Jacksonville. The Saints got ZERO rush on Carson Palmer..7-0 Cards. Let’s see if Drew can bring them back.
And the Pack Bears game was very entertaining until the final minutes with a Clay Matthews int to seal it.
Buffalo crushed Indy and St. Louis is tied with Seattle.
My point…NFL games are just unpredicatable and close. I suspect we need to brace ourselves for a wild ride this afternoon.

Hey Joe- how dumb do you feel now? It’s one game, but Winston was taken because he was viewed by some (including you) as more polished and pro-ready, and that Marriotta didnt have to go through progressions at Oregon. On their first drives, Marriota worked to at least this third read converting a key third down- while Jameis locked on to a receiver and was baited by a guy I can’t even name. Then the throw to Sefarian-Jenkins- I think it’s pretty clear your analytical skill is akin to the rest of the squawking crows that picked up all sort of deflate gate angles.

The Bucs defense is making him look good, but Mariota gets the ball out very fast with high accuracy. May not have a great deep ball but the NFL now is about dominating underneath. Winston looks exactly how you’d think, 20 INTs seems like to low end of possibilities. Lovie obviously has to go though.

This is about as bad as could be imagined, and it could get worse with 2 qtrs left.

We should be very encouraged. Lovie used only 2 of the timeouts in the first half to avoid a delay of game penalty! He used the 3rd timeout to stop the clock so the Titans could score their 5th touchdown!

I don’t know what’s more sickening, the poor job the coaches did to prepare for this game or seeing people who are joyous for the fact that the team is losing in such a shameful manner, just because the QB they wanted is playing better. That’s pure BS to me.

During the long tedious process before the draft of who we should draft. I read how INT’s can be over came like they where nothing, I also read how QB’s need to put up 270+ yards a game to be successful in the NFL.
This is our First game of the 2015 season at home and we are now
at the half down 28 points. While “America’s QB” is gracing us with 6/12 70 yards 1 TD 2 INT, Our opponent’s QB at the half is up 28 points going 10/13 170 yards 4 TD 0 INT.
We do need a “savior” in this next half, let us not think we do not. WE DO!
Will he show up, is he on our roster? Tune in for the next half of football to find out.

That’s what happens when you build a unit through free agency. That’s why I always tell to fans that say we need to spend in free agency how wrong they are.
That said…the Bucs had no choice this year. The offense needed pieces added and got them through the draft. That left only free agency for defense (except Kwon).
Next year, the defense will get attention.

I know all the local sports personalities were wanting the Bucs to draft Winston, however, I also think this was the shared opinion to give them something to write or talk about. With that being said, obviously Mariota was the better choice, this guy is NFL ready, minus the hype, again the Bucs made the wrong choice. My comments may be premature in that this is only the first game, however, the difference between the two, both athletically and mentally is very obvious. I’m a life long fan, today feeling very disappointed.

Slamming Winston is retarded. As is declaring MM an All Pro. MM is NOT making any reads. He does not have to. Quick slants to wide open guys five to ten yards downfield time after time is an indictment of our scheme and MLB. Kwon’s feet were in cement on the last two TD’s.
On the other side, Dick Lebeau is 26-3 against rookie QB’s. JW is just another one of his victims. He will be a star. My bet is we will go up tempo in the second half to take some of DL induced confusion factor out of it.
But here’s the bottom line – broken record time – this is not an aberration. The Bucs organization has become a joke. Firing Lovie won’t help. Firing Licht won’t help. Unless, that is, the Glazers hire a qualified consulting/search firm to help them select a CEO who can take over ALL future decision making.
This team stinks. No talent. No MO. No identity. If that doesn’t change then the results won’t either.

I warned everyone that Mariota should be picked by the Buc’s and the problem of all the interceptions Winston threw last year was a red flag. Anyone who thinks this about Mariota > Winston is mistaken. This is simply Whisenhunt + LeBeau >> Lovie and company. The Titans have effectively designed their offense around Mariota’s strengths, even incorporating the same concepts and plays that he successfully at Oregon.
On the flip side, the Bucs are asking Winston to do the things they want instead of designing the offense around Winston’s strengths. STOP ASKING WINSTON TO DROP BACK. He has “heavy feet”, you don’t want him doing 7 step drops. If you’ve watched the guy throughout his career, he is far more effective out of the gun. That is just one example!

Anyone who thinks this about Mariota > Winston is SADLY mistaken. This is simply Whisenhunt + LeBeau >> Lovie and company. The Titans have effectively designed their offense around Mariota’s strengths, even incorporating the same concepts and plays that he successfully at Oregon.
On the flip side, the Bucs are asking Winston to do the things they want instead of designing the offense around Winston’s strengths. STOP ASKING WINSTON TO DROP BACK. He has “heavy feet”, you don’t want him doing 7 step drops. If you’ve watched the guy throughout his career, he is far more effective out of the gun. That is just one example

JWBUCS is correct…this is all on the HC. MM or JW is not the problem…they also may not be the solution. The sad fact is Lovie is not a great game manager and does not game plan for a rookie QB. Anybody trying to lay this game at the feet of Winston either has an agenda (see: orange and blue) or just flat out wanted him to fail more than they wanted the Bucs to win.
He has had an awful game–is his career going to be based on his first game–no, thank god!

After game 1 last year, I felt horrible, after I had such high hopes thinking we were just a coach not named Schiano and a week1 starting qb notnamed Freeman away from being decent. The year before I felt horrible when geno Smith lit us up his his first game. Both of those years, I knew in my gut our season was over before it started. This year, after watching those last 2 openers, it literally feels 10x worse. Honestly, our horribly run, laughably pathetic excuse for a franchise deserves to be exactly what they are, loosers and complete jokes

We saw how bad Mariota looked on the ONE PLAY in the game where he faced a strong pash rush–that’s how he’d look on EVERY PLAY were he playing for the Bucs.

Coach Smith was right when he said we weren’t Tennessee ready. The most egregious part of this game….the penalties. We lead the league in bad penalties, timely penalties….it’s beyond frustrating to not to compete. I expected the struggles on offense, and won’t overreact to one game. Both rookie qb’s will struggle over time, but unbelievable a rookie opponent is already having a career game, and it’s his first ever game. There is no excuse for our defense, none.

Where do I start? Up front, I guess. For the life of me, I don’t understand how a team goes into a season without addressing the DE and OL. Don’t tell me that starting 2 rookies is the answer either. What a freakin joke. On top of the lousy personnel moves is the atrocious Xs and Os and undisciplined play. 10 flags so far. -3 yards of O in the 3nd half. Winston looks terrible. His feet are sloppy is windup elongated and his throws loose/soft. Some of that is because he can’t plant his feet. He is going to struggle mightily without a pocket. I didn’t think we could look worse than the Atlanta and Baltimore games last year. But we do. That’s on Lovie. His D is ancient and ineffective. His game management lacking and his ability to inspire men to play beyond themselves non existent.

Firing Lovie and the rest of the staff is pointless, in the end. Glazers are gonna screw up again with a stupid hiring. First, hire somebody who’s gonna make those decisions for you, somebody who knows football. Just be the owners, stay as far away as possible from football decisions. Licht should be in the mix as well. Just hire somebody who has a clue about how to turn this franchise around and let him hire a GM, a coach and so on. ALSO, this team need better scouting. Relocate more resources to scouting, we need to draft BETTER, this franchise sucks not because we didn’t take MARIOTA, but because we’ve screwed up drafts for YEARS.

@the Bucs anthem, I’m guessing we’d have seen a very similar result if we had drafted mariota. Jameis didn’t surrender 35 points to a team in the bottom 3 in offense last year, led by rookie qb.
I’m not a huge Winston apologist, but this embarrassment is on the coaching and the d, not the rookie qb.

How is this any different than the College championship quarter finals? Everyone had a reason why JW was so much better than MM, but anyone who honestly watched the Noles being beaten like a read headed step child by the Ducks….anyone who watched JW’s footwork or lack thereof should have made a different/better decision.
I honestly thought that Hundley and/or Bryce Petty were better choices.

What decisions? They shelled out a ton of money last year for Free Agents. They all busted, but the Glazers put the money out there to improve. They brought in Lovie, who was the best coach available on the market (supposedly). They brought in Licht who was supposed to be THE up and coming guy. They pushed to draft Winston, who–in spite of nay sayers–was unilaterally supposed to be the top choice.
I don’t think they’re doing an exemplary job, but I am just not sure what another owner would have brought that they did not.

Lovie has to be on the hottest of seats. The defense was bar none the worst thing in that game today. James looked rough, but it was the defense that really embarrassed themselves today. James is a rookie QB with a highly suspect Oline—an Oline that had almost every decent run called back for holding, but the defense is Lovie’s responsibility. It’s supposed to be what he’s good at, but we keep having these blowouts. Has the game passed him by???

Just because money were spent last year it doesn’t mean they they know what they’re doing. We’ve all seen the results of that spending spree. But it’s not the Glazers’ fault, they haven’t made those decisions. It’s the people they have put in charge that wasted those money. However, they did make the decision to hire Lovie Smith. He got fired with a 10-6 record, there must be a reason for that. He’s a good man, but he’s just behind the curve in today’s NFL. I don’t recall hordes of teams courting Lovie. Glazers put Morris in charge, then went with Schiano, and now this. If you’re happy with such decisions, it’s your opinion. I’m far from being happy.

Lovie obviously outclassed in the area of coach preparation. Decidedly so. We have lost big before but what bothers me more is that we lost a special opportunity to draft what seems to be the best QB to be drafted in a long long time. …. And remember… Mariota has done all this in his very first NFL game. Jameis is not the problem he showed some good things. But he also showed rookie moments. The problem is coaching and defense. Mariotas coaches had a plan for him. Winston’s coaches were like good luck kid. The defense was horrendous and couldn’t stop anything. Discipline was lacking I think we need a new coach and I am not the fan that suggests firing a coach but I really believe lovie can’t handle where the NFL is now and should not be coaching. I like firing lovie and making letter head coach and fire Frazier bring in new DC. I have hope for jaeis just not with these coaches.

Doug Martin looked OK, but Jaboo looked like boo boo and Lovie’s defense blows (still). Receivers and TEs feast on us (still). Titans have a better Qb(now) and better coaching. Tough for the blog optmist here eh? Thank heavens Dave and Falcon fan didn’t take up my offer to bet the farm and take their 30 points or I would have been sweating this one out.
I’m not ready to pronounce Fameis a bust but clearly we selected the wrong QB compared to MM. But a lot of that is due to MM’s talent. He simply has more skill that Fameis. Fameis MAY have a little more arm strength but MM is more accurate and he’s not nearly as clumsy as Fameis.
And sooo I”m the optimist. The OL looked pretty good. Special teams were decent and ASJ showed up.
I’m certainly not ready to call Fameis a bust..or Jamarcus or Jameis Leftwich but he is clearly NOT NFL ready.
I give him one more game this year and if he keeps making stoooopid mistakes he sits. I want to win THIS YEAR. I do not want to write off this season to develop Fameis. Perhaps a seat on the bench would do him good. I honestly believe that yes Fameis has more upside than Glennon but MG8 may give us a better chance to win THIS YEAR. Fameis gets one more start and if it’s like this I pull the plug.
None of Fameis mistakes were on the OL…the two ints were totally on him on simple fundamental plays…an out..and a swing pass…C’MON MAN!!!
Like all the others here Lovie and Koetter did horrible jobs. How many freaking formation penalities…those are not on Lovie but rather Koetter. But Lovie’s D was embarrassing.
But save your wrath…he’s NOT going to get fired mid season. If he doesn’t turn this around and win at least 6-8 I’ll jump on the fire Lovie bandwagon.
And btw FSU fans we won our SB with an FSU QB! Brad wasn’t HOF or even a superstar. It’s not important for Fameis to be better than MM…that’s just not going to happen. What is important is if he brings enough to the table to EVENTUALLY win an SB. I haven’t given up on that. But I don’t want to waste an entire season just letting him learn at the expense of our record.

I think anyone who is kidding them self in thinking that if we had mariotas this game would have went way different is crazy the real an much more complex problem is coaching. Jameis would have done the same thing to us if he was a titan

Give the Titans coaches props, simply way more prepared than Lovie’s group. Jameis made some bad throws but i think he will be a franchise gunslinger one day. Mark my words though, and i hate to say it or see it happen, but Mariotta will get hurt in this league. Those constant 8 yard slants will get taken away and he’ll be wanting to run. It wont work out well for him.

After what I have seen of Jameis and Mariota in preseason and this game, I can say that Joe does not know football. Jameis might be good in year two, but not now. Mariota is ready to go and Winston is not. I could see Winston’s lack of footwork in college. If he fixes that he will improve 100%. Next is his tendency to panic in the face of pressure. Fix that and he can be excellent. He isn’t going to fix it this year. Mariota is another Aaron Rogers and will win a super bowl with the Titans. This will be a long process and I hope that Koetter can fix Jameis or we just got set back five to seven years.
