Shock If Bucs Don’t Pick Winston

April 6th, 2015

“You better be ready.”

The NFL draft will begin in a little over three weeks. Damn, this reminds Joe of the old “Hot for Teacher” video Van Halen put out in the mid-1980s, when David Lee Roth held up an hourglass, stared into the camera and said, “Aw man, I think the clock is slow.”

(These idjits, they book their Tampa show on their 2015 tour on the first Sunday of the NFL season. Son. Of. A. … )

The Bucs have been on the clock since they tanked lost to the Saints in December, winning the Chase for Jameis. And as Andrew Astleford of Fox Sports Florida reports, it would be a bolt-of-lightning-like shock if the Bucs do not draft Jameis Winston.

At this point, it will be a five-alarm surprise if the Bucs don’t take Winston. Coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jason Licht have said all the right things. Winston has done nothing this offseason to harm himself. Momentum keeps rolling in his favor like a mid-winter avalanche. Winston looks like the plug-and-play answer for a franchise that has had its share of defective quarterbacks the past two years.

His pro day at Tallahassee offered more lessons last week. Again, he was impressive. Again, he looked like the draft’s Rolls-Royce.

Winston says he’s the best this class has to offer. The more he does on the field, the more he shows why he’s likely right.

Through these next three weeks, Winston needs to lock himself in his Alabama house and have his mom or girlfriend change the passwords on his social media accounts. The Bucs simply cannot afford for Winston to make an 11th-hour gaffe.

  1. Patrick in VA Says:

Really wish we could just fast forward to getting this draft over with. The speculation and, more so, waiting around is getting tiresome. I’d like to be able to go ahead and get to the point where we know who is coming in here and know what holes we’ve addressed and see what our prospects are going forward. This endless debate about who to pick where is mind numbing.

  2. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

The debate about Winston is pretty much over. He’s the choice and rightly so. Really excited about seeing him play for the Bucs.

  3. Jolly Bucs fan Says:

Im just waiting for the draft to get here so I can finally put my order in for a Famous Jameis Jersey

  4. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

My intuition honestly tells me that all the public love & hype our front office is giving Winston is a bit much and I think there’s a little bit of showmanship involved.

I’m sure Winston is a ‘big part of our plans this year’ just like Revis was last year. Hmmmmm

  5. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Not me….

  6. Pancake block Says:

The sooner the draft makes it official the sooner you can give him a reach around

  7. Ufour2 Says:

They are NOT going to pick him. The Buc’s never do what we expect, ever. To me, the most game ready and talented player in the draft is Leonard Williams…mark it down, that will be our pick. He can play all line positions and is a beast.

  8. Patrick in VA Says:

@Joe – I’m bored here at work and was trying to work my way back to the very first JBF article posted when you founded the site but it’s taking forever. could you post a link or give me a search term that I can put in to the search bar that will get me there?

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

@Ufour2- I’m not sure about the Bucs being unexpexted but I made the same proclamation a few weeks ago and people looked at me like I was nuts. Leonard Williams is the pick…write it down!

  10. Tom Edrington Says:

Can anyone imagine what the Joe(s) might do if by some galactic miracle the Bucs DO NOT take Winston???

  11. P'cola Buc Says:

97/100 Mock drafts feel Winston be the guy

  12. Lord Cornelius Says:

It’s amazing the logic some of you come up with.

For one – the Bucs have repeatedly stated that if they believe there is a franchise QB in the draft they have to take him. This message has been pounded for awhile; along with their expression that both Winston/Maritoa seem like that kind of guy.

The fans/city/etc would go crazy if they didn’t take a QB and traded back for that reason alone. At least 90% would.

So knowing that the Bucs for sure are going QB; there is no reason whatsoever to blow smoke. They have the first pick and can do whatever they want. They are taking Jameis Winston.

  13. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

Jameis Winston has been the pick since the last game of the season….and 95% of America knows it. It’s the 5% that are in the dark!

Erik no matter how many times you repeat it to convince yourself it’s not true. It’s simply not going to change anything. All your doing is setting yourself up for heartbreak… so keep it up. Going to be really entertaining come draft day when Winston is introduced as the Bucs #1 pick

    Welcome To Tampa, Jameis!

meh, if they pick him, they pick him.

would be on par for what i have come to expect from lovie and licht high risk choices whether it be character, injury, age etc.

they go with the shiney thing without considering the risk or safer, more consistent options.

gaurantee he’s on the bench by the end of the year for either by suspension, injury, behavior issues or just outright shell shock and turnovers.

bust is written all over him for those who look past just the athletic potential and consider the mental deficiencies

  24. port richey george Says:

the only reason I can see that he is pushing *anybody* but mike glennon last year(johnny rehab) and this year(pick any quarterback in the nfl, cfl, college) is one of the following:
glennon must have snubbed him when he asked him for an interview.
glennon looks like a bully that tormented him in school.
glennon looks like the guy that got the girl he never could in high school. she probably looked like Rachel the cheerleader.

  25. Keepitreal Says:

Robert… Your still here…BUNKER9 should be you tag. Still hating I see. What r u and subparsam going to do when we get Winston?

  26. Dewey Selmon Says:

I was 8 years old when this franchise played its first game. i am willing to give up 4 years to find out. If Lovie does his part with the defense and Winston does half of what we know he can do, we are on the right path. Just make #13 team captain today.

  27. Keepitreal Says:

Hey BUNKER9 are you not missing school? Or did you forge a hall pass. Short bus will be there soon.

  28. Armando Says:

Winston throws for 350 yards three TD’s bucs roll in victory – Gator fan bitches

  29. Bucs_Sam Says:

Yes, his parents and Girlfriend should lock him up.

We wouldn’t Winston to act the way he’s gonna act once Tampa drafts him.

It’s much better that he pretends to be someone else for the next month, then when he signs a milion contract we can find out who he really is.

Is this site now Joe Pelosi? We have to draft the guy to find out who he is?

The best that can happen to Tampa is Winston does a AMA on reddit. Lets find out who this kid really is.

Just ask Cleveland how well Joe’s last great hope worked out. #JohnnyRehab

  30. BucsQcCity Says:

Unless Winston blow it all by himself he will be the 1st pick. Coaches, GM, Owners, Fans and Media are all in.

The Bucs even established a “line” to how far they are willing to go to get a gamechanger. I suspect them to have leaked “their interest” for Greg Hardy to the media and by refusing to chase him, they position themselves like people who still have some principles so they can point out that they did have opportunities but refused them because of their principles. They already played with Incognito just to ease a deal with the Pats so why they wouldn’t play the media into that one? (even if the goal was different in that case) Winston just happen to be on the good side of their morale code.

  31. robert 9 Says:

    @keepitreal

I’m just gonna keep it real bra.

thats how I roll. I call a spade a spade. I don’t believe some poor black kid who has been force fed sports since he was a baby means that makes him a reasonable person or a good pick. especially with ALL the off field issues. One should not need as many handlers or be kept out of sight to stay out of trouble.

with him the old adage is true :

“It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.” – Mark Twain

talented maybe, but talent alone will get you no where.

  32. Keepitreal Says:

Bunker9— you really are a piece of work. Showing your true colors.

  33. Keepitreal Says:

@bunker9…. So if he was a white kid your opinion would change, and I suppose you wouldn’t be calling a spade a spade? Lol

  34. robert 9 Says:

who the heck is bunker 9

  35. robert 9 Says:

white, black makes no difference. no need to take it there.

  36. Lord Cornelius Says:

@ robert – what the hell does him being black have to do with anything?

I think that Mark Twain quote applies much more to you than anyone. The majority of criticisms you have are supported by terrible logic or just blatant lies / misinformation.

You say he’d be picked for athletic potential while they ignore mental deficiences. This is just 100% bullsh*t and if you’ve read ANYTHING you would know it.

His football brain / IQ is the only reason he is getting this level of hype if you’ve actually been keeping up with the real world. His athleticism has been a knock if anything.

  37. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

    Robert9,
Omg, u just called a spade a spade?!??

Here come the racial tensions…. (eye roll)

Maiota is the smarter choice, indeed. Why take soooo much risk with the #1 pick? Seems stupid to me.

As a heads up, for future reference, the way @Joe has the articles linked, if you just put the year after joebucsfan (i.e. https://www.joebucsfan.com/2015/) that will show you the archived articles from that entire year.

Using that same information, if you add the 2-digit month, at the next slash (i.e. https://www.joebucsfan.com/2014/05) that wil give you the article archive for December 2014.

it can actually hamper the person because they justify it with I got a 4.0….blah, blah, blah

  44. charactermatters Says:

Who is the number one player overall? Pick him. Don’t reach for need regardless of position. Just take the best player available in every round. Teams who follow this philosophy consistently remain in the top half of the league.

  48. Stanglassman Says:

Jameis has the highest FOOTBALL IQ coming into the draft since Payton Manning, he just happens to have a 4.0 and was accepted to Stafford. Please point out the proof that he grew up poor. I never read this about him or was that just assumed because of his race?

  49. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

He grew up middle class with very strict parents.

  51. charactermatters Says:

Where do you go to take this football IQ test? Do they administer it at the combine? What was Manning’s score on this test and how close was Jameis to his score? Did Mariota have a decent score or was he woefully behind the others? I’ve never seen these scores so if you know where they are can you enlighten me and provide a link?

  54. robert 9 Says:

    you know his parents 87?

I mean strict could mean any number of things, like they made him play sports 6 hours a day, made him finish his chicken, smacked him with a switch etc….

certainly they forgot to teach him humility, courtesy and respect for authority.

to me that aint so strict.

the same could be said for some rich lawyers kid who was raised to be a plastic surgeon, but was a monster on the inside.

  55. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

I grew up an underprivileged white kid.

  56. Bucfan4life Says:

The Bucs are going to trade their number one pick to the Cleveland Browns for 3 first round picks. The browns will take a linebacker from Ohio State even though they could have had him with the 6th pick. Then they will trade 3 second round picks to Jacksonville for the 5th pick. At which point the Bucs will give back the Browns 3 first round picks to take the QB out of Southern Cal.

Per ufour2 and bucsfanman you can write it down. I am certain this will happen regardless of all indications and common sense!

  57. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

    Sporting News :

Few — if any, at this point — knock the 21-year-old for his ability to play the position. Some scouts even consider Winston’s football IQ to be as strong as that of Peyton Manning, perhaps the smartest NFL quarterback of all time, according to Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman.

“There was a moment where we kind of looked at each other and said, ‘Oh, okay, wow,'” one scout told Freeman regarding the reaction to Winston’s “knowledge of X’s and O’s.”

“He’s probably the smartest player I’ve ever interviewed,” an undisclosed team personnel man said, according to Freeman. “Football IQ as good as I’ve ever seen.”

  58. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

“Jameis Winston’s football IQ reminiscent of Peyton Manning”

    Sports Illustrated.com

According to reports, questions regarding Winston’s football IQ have all but vanished after his interviews with several teams. Several scouts even claimed the man’s football IQ was on par with Peyton Manning; certainly not a bad comparison to have.

  65. Lord Cornelius Says:

And LOL @ Robert telling someone they have their head up someone else’s a** for simply providing links from expert opinions to backup an assertationi they made that you doubted.

This is essentially what this thread reads like:

“87: People have compared Winston’s IQ to Peyton Manning”
“Robert 9: That’s simply rediculous! How could anyone measure that or make such an assertation!?”
“87: Here are links to various experters who have made this claim”
“Robert 9: haha you have your head so far up Winston’s a**!”

What a freaking child. Like how can you take youself seriously what that type of communication ability? Do you communicate in your professional job with such a lack of basic understanding of human speach and comprehension?

  66. Lord Cornelius Says:

Multiple spelling errors in last post but too lazy to re-write or edit. Point is valid regardless.

  67. Keepitreal Says:

  68. IK Says:

Perhaps it would be better to tempt Winston to make the 11th hour gaffe, and if he can’t stay clean for 3 more short weeks, we’ll have our answer.

Yes, it seems like he is coming our way. Last year every draft guru had the Bucs taking Evans and that was exactly what happened.

Hold it together Winston and you’ll be number 1! That would be a clutch life performance.

  69. Underdog Says:

Just read another piece where Dominik was the only guy on the panel that would pick Mariota over Winston. How is that for a ringing endorsement? If that is not enough to make you side with Winston, then you are hopeless.

  75. charactermatters Says:

I have no doubts that JW has a high football IQ as he has impressed many in the know. However MM has also been lauded for his high football IQ and compared to Manning as well. While both are extremely intelligent, these are opinions and not a quantified fact. Jameis may have a higher football IQ than Manning coming out of college but we’ll never truly know because there is no way to quantify this. Therefore saying Jameis has the highest football IQ since anyone is nothing more than an opinion. Let’s just take comfort in knowing that both of these QBs have a football IQ that has been described as off the charts.

  76. Keepitreal Says:

No disrespect but I haven’t heard anyone state MM has an unbelievable football IQ. Just saying.

  77. Keepitreal Says:

Who compared MM football IQ to Manning???

  78. JBuc Says:

Not sure how you would determine Mariota’s football IQ. Big card on sideline had a picture of Arsenio Hall and Donald Duck so I called Donald Duck, made one read and then ran like hell.

  80. charactermatters Says:

Many have raved about MMs football IQ in general and the Manning comparison came from Chip Kelly so you can take that with A grain of salt if you like. His overall intelligence can be demonstrated by his ability to attain his degree in a difficult field of study in less than three years.

Im right here bro. I am not and never have been a Winston Hater. I was a founding member of the Trade Down crowd. The combine opened my eyes on both QBs a bit and as I came to realize that we Are going to take a QB I have come to hope that QB is Winston. I know that the Bucs are going to do almost an FBI type of background check and if Winston clears than I am Winston all the way. Now if someone wants to do a Skins type of trade I still am open. Lol

Buc’s Uni but I’ve only been around since the Dilfer days. Gawd we have to hope Famies isn’t another Dilfer. He certainly hasn’t looked like a Dilfer up till now so that is comforting.

    @UF

My bad. Not hoping for a trade down, but, if a GM is throwing out 1s and 2s like candy, its worth a listen.

I used to love Bucball and defense. But, you can see the writing on the wall. The league is clearly pro offense. It’s getting harder and harder to get to the top without superior QB play.

Best thing to happen to Jameis coming to Tampa is the hiring of Koetter. There’s enough talent to make opposing defenses actually earn their checks this year.

Lovie and Licht have made countless bad decisions…no reason to think that will not continue and they will pick Winston

    Bo…you don’t know diddly.

L&L have practically every scout in the land on their side with this pick, for a damn good reason.

    You’ll see Bo.

  101. Stanglassman Says:

Bo says~ It would be a bad decision to not pick Winston. Slowly creeping into the pro Jameis crowd, add another to the list. Way to go Bo!

Yeah. Those of you that have known me for a while should just call me ‘buc’
    lol

  103. CalBucsFan Says:

Hey Joe, I bought in to Jameis being the right pick a long time ago. But, I sure hope he doesn’t have to be locked in his home and turn over all his social media account passwords to some trusting mom or girlfriend because if he does then he’s the wrong damn pick!

  104. BoJim Says:

You don’t build a franchise around a DL unless it’s Leroy Selmon.

  105. Barry Bryan Joel all agree Says:

Joe’s marking for Winston, that’s for sure. He’s absolutely trying to read the tea leaves. But has Joe really invested Winston like the Bucs, the NFL, and all the other NFL teams? Are there any other issues that have been uncovered? Any Elementary school, Junior high, High school issues?

    *Bucs haven’t committed.

*His Handlers have locked him completely down with baby sitters.

*Zero teams have any interest in moving up for him.

Don’t be surprised if Bucs do pass on him.

Bust is written all over a lot of players especially Oregon quarterbacks and spread option qb’s or you can just name the last qb from Oregon Dennis Dixon lol enough said

Breaking News: Bucs discover 9 year old Jameis was caught pretending he went to bed on time but really he listening to a baseball game under the covers with head phones. Was this the same night he didn’t eat all his vegetables?

  108. P'cola Buc Says:

The problem is that Winston is the overwhelming choice by those in the know associated with the NFL….if it were not for haters on this sight….we wouldn’t be having this discussion. We need to fill up this time (24 days) with something….perhaps comparing the possible OL draftees or the DE/ILB possibilities would be more productive.

  109. Mariota Joe Says:

Even JBF still says Winston needs his mom and/or girlfriend to babysit his social media. Please posters, don’t take pot shots at me….aim at JBF, Winston’s biggest fan.

  110. P'cola Buc Says:

    @ Mariota

Winston can be eating pablum 3 times a day…we don’t care…as long as he puts “W’s” on the board.

My intuition honestly tells me that all the public love & hype our front office is giving Winston is a bit much and I think there’s a little bit of showmanship involved.

I’m sure Winston is a ‘big part of our plans this year’ just like Revis was last year. Hmmmmm”

luckily, your intuition means exactly nothing. The Bucs have zero to gain from a smokescreen with the first pick.
