GMC Will Mentor Winston

Gerald McCoy only too happy to show next week's No. 1 pick the ropes in the NFL.

Gerald McCoy is only too happy to show next week’s No. 1 pick the ropes in the NFL.

Joe isn’t sure where this word “mentor” got started, as it relates to football rookies and young quarterbacks. It’s like NFL teams are supposed to hire child care professionals and place them on the 53-man roster.

When did the NFL become KinderCare?

At any rate, Joe will play along because fans love this subject. Unquestioned team leader for the Bucs, Gerald McCoy, once told Joe (maybe two years ago) he didn’t buy into rookie hazing. Joe is going to paraphrase without the exact quote handy; GMC said if the front office and coaching staff has a rookie on the roster, then they feel he can help us win, therefore, he is valuable and I will do everything in my power to help him because if he plays well, we have a better chance to win.

So when GMC was asked how he would treat a new rookie quarterback (coughjameiswinstoncough) this week, GMC said he would receive said rookie with open arms.

“It will be a great opportunity for me because I didn’t have that when I came in,” GFMC said. “So to have a guy come in to get picked as high as our pick is this year, whoever it may be, I’m honestly going to take it upon myself to try to mentor that guy because, like you said, I know the pressures of being picked high and people expect so much from you when you get picked that high. But people have to realize these guys are still kids coming in. Just because your age says 21-22, I can guarantee you from when I came in when I was 22 to me being 27 now, it’s a completely different person.

“Those guys need somebody around them to show them how to be a professional. It’s not all about talent, what you do on the field. There’s a lot that goes into being a professional, all the way from balancing out your time to how you practice to how you get your body ready. You’ve got to take care of your body, man. That’s how guys last in this league, that’s how you see guys play 10, 12, 14 years – they take care of their bodies. So there’s more to being a professional football player than just performing on Sundays.”

So GMC was shunned when he was a rookie? So he never got guidance from the likes of tokin’ LeGarrette Blount, Kellen Winslow, Stylez White, Sabby the Goat, Tanard “Bongs” Jackson, Jerramy Stevens, coach-rasslin’ Adam Heyward or granny-hasslin, helmet-wielding, cabbie-slugging, pistol-whipping, Adderall-dropping Aqib Talib? Can you imagine?

Joe is getting a bit nostalgic. In GMC’s rookie year, the Bucs missed the playoffs by a razor, yet the team had a bunch of undesirables on the squad (see above). So much for only picking boy scouts to make the team. How has that worked since?

  1. BuccaneEric Says:

GMC knows that his legacy and playoff hopes are riding on Winston’s right arm. Great players on losing teams rarely get the recognition they deserve.

  2. WS99 Says:

Can’t wait to see winston grab gmc by the face mask and chew him out when he jumps offsides on 3rd and short.

  3. Barry Says:

I think GMC will love Winston’s rapists wit.

    #DP #HGH #PEDs #BrainDeadRetard

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A mentor is only as effective as the mentee is willing to accept…If Winston is truly open to advice and humble enough to accept leadership, there will be many that will step up to offer their help.
GMC is a leader and leaders always look to mentor when possible.

I actually see Vjax as a very important player to Winston because of the chemistry between QBs & WRs……

  5. ATrain Says:

How many mentors does this guy need.
Brooks, McCoy, 87 is going to follow him around town and pay for everything he forgets to pay for or is given or falls in his lap.

    How many Superstars have babysitters

He is a leader but has to have 10 Mentors..

    Please

  6. RL1976 Says:

Fantastic – that means Winston will play his axx off the first two series…then disappear the rest of the game. Perfect!

  7. Eric Says:

No reason to think Jameies needs any more mentoring than anybody else.

If anything he can mentor this team to play the game with the passion he brings.

The bucs need to learn from Winston, not the other way around.

  8. Iknowmorethanlovie Says:

Jameis just don’t disappear in the 4th quarter like gmc

  9. ATrain Says:

Hey Eric did you READ this article ..

Have you listen to any sports news at all.
Brooks will mentor …Brook was even asked if Winston will live with him..

That’s what all of this Media is asking who is mentoring him. anyone around Winston is asking including His Lawyer

You want Him to Mentor. HAHAHA…

Passion = yelling at the coach

Blindly follow and you will run into a pole

  10. SAMCRO Says:

Wow! I’m so glad that the new “Face of Our Franchise”, the “Adolescent Millionaire”, and “Quarterback Extraordinaire”, needs a BABYSITTER!!

    good grief… 🙁

  11. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Who’s gonna monitor…errr mentor…. Jameis next March next off season in the Cabo Wabo Cantina 2:30 AM drinking Tequela out of a funnel….Bwhahahahaha

  12. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

It is not IF Jameis will F’ up….
it is just a matter of time…..the guy has not learned a thing
and is supported by excuse making enablers…STAY AWAY !!!

  13. WS99 Says:

    ATrain

I’m with you 100%. There is no room in the NFL for a QB to be yelling at a coach and trying to pass it off as passion. It’s completely unprofessional, no way any fan would support some like that and that qb would have a very short career. Exhibit #1

  14. LargoBuc Says:

Why wouldn’t our team leader want to mentor Winston. You dont think hardy was a mentor to Brooks and Sapp? How people can spin this as a weakness is amazing. All rookies coming into the league could use guidance and we are lucky we have the players that are willing to do so.
And btw I read that GMC got alot of tough love from Davin Joseph his rookie year. Beating his @ss every practice sure seemed to benefit Mccoy.

  15. The Buc Realist Says:

it will turn out better than Winslow mentoring Freeman!!!

  16. INDYbucsfan Says:

I hope Winston “rapes” Barry the stupid car thief.

  17. Underdog Says:

GMC is a really good man and a good example for any young player coming into the league. I’m sure he would be more than happy to mentor anybody that he was asked to

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“Jameis just don’t disappear in the 4th quarter like gmc”

And don’t disappear or worse still dig a big hole for us in the first half like Fameis.

We need every player on this team to play all 4 quarters. In addition it would be nice if we made a play when we need one every once in awhile. It would be nice if stopped with the brain dead penalities.

9 losses last year by less than a TD. It was because when it came to crunch time players didn’t make the necessary play or committed brain dead penalties. It has to stop this year and it can’t be just Fameis and GMC.

  20. Drew Says:

Love the way @Joe added another reference to JW (gag gag). No MM love found here from @Joe (cough cough).

  21. sethb22 Says:

Ideally you have a couple turds and a couple choir boys… turds toughen up the choir boys and the choir boys keep the turds out of trouble.

In the past we were all turds. Now were all choir boys. I mean Gerald McCoy is too friendly… it actually pisses me off. Regardless of Sapp being a Turd… he got his teammates pumped and pissed off. Playing Mad is a desirable trait…

Lovie will get the foundation strong with choir boys and sprinkle in turds where needed. Que in, “and with the 1st pick in the NFL draft… The TB Buccaneers select”

    …Were building it

  22. Bogeyking Says:

Jimbo and FSU brought in quite a few big name athletes and FSU alum to try to mentor Winston and none of them had any success, a couple of them even saying he was “hopeless”. Winston is who he is and there’s nothing that Lovie, Gerald, Brooks or anybody else can do about it

  23. Joe Says:

    WS99:

Yup. Also remember Phil Simms getting into screaming matches with Bill Parcells, too. What a rotten quarterback.

  24. Drew Says:

@Joe… If they draft JW I’ll lock up my Daughters, hide my crab legs and install bullet proof windows to protect my family and myself from JW.

  25. Smart1 Says:

Let’s spend out #1 draft pick, after going 2-14 and needing a lot of good players, on an egotistical QB who needs a babysitter to stay out of trouble and not humiliate our franchise – NOT

  26. WS99 Says:

Going down the list of SB qbs and they are all pretty passionate except Flacco but he wasn’t the leader of that team. Lmao, yea that would be the HOF lb that was acquitted of murder, he’s a little passionate wouldn’t you say? Lmao.

  27. Patrick in VA Says:

@Drew – Make sure to set the locks where you open it from the outside and you go ahead and shut yourself up in there. We’ll let you out when he leaves town. Just so you can set aside enough food, we’re planning on him having a 45 year career

  28. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Jameis is going to be really creative in F’up with money…he has gotten crazy at every level…HS…FSU….NFL/TMZ…..when he has money and power… watch out

  29. bucs4lyfe Says:

wasn’t McCoy hurt during that 10 win season?

lol ya’ll are pathetic, I guess it’s ook to immature cuz you work at mcdonald’s and no one including your family takes you seriously but you can pile on a guy because he’s about to be an instant millionaire. josh Gordon is a risk factor, manziel was a risk factor. like Dominick said not drafting Blackmon who went to Jacksonville because he was always at a particular bar you know the guy that’s out of the league now. idiots no one goes Darren sharper in the middle of an nfl career….there are no serial nfl rapist. Darren sharper is the only one and it was after he retired. so if you want to be technical once Winston gets drafted when you refer to his off field issues you’ll be referring to his college career not his nfl career. he’ll get a clean slate in the nfl no matter who drafts him whether you like it or not….he doesn’t care about you he used to bigotry he’s from alabama

  30. Bucs#1 Says:

Maybe Winston can take Gerald to Mons Jameis!

  31. WINSTON=GOD Says:

    7 days Rape city!!

  32. Posey99 Says:

“When did the NFL become KinderCare?”

Most Businesses in america have mentors for new people coming in. Always someone to show you the ropes.

  33. Smart1 Says:

Bucs#1 – That’s funny, I bet Joe Redner is already having the sales contract drawn up, lol

  34. WS99 Says:

Man Jameis is going to take him and everybody in the NFCS to church. Can I get an Amen?!

  35. Smart1 Says:

Happy Hour will have Free Crablegs (Probably Stolen)
Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell can be the Bouncers

  36. Eric Says:

Winston has been criss crossing the country preparing for the draft, improving his play.

    San Diego
    New York
    Chicago
    Tampa numerous times
    Michigan

All without any supervision. No issues. Only hard work and preparation for the NFL. The only thing he has been doing otherwise is going to Church, playing with his little brother, hanging with his girlfriend, and attending charity events.

Brooks said when he was asked whether he needs a mentor that “he will be fine”.

His lawyer only said he needs assistance just like any other rookie.

This “mentoring” is just in the minds of the haters. Like many other issues related to Mr. Winston.

  37. Dave Pear Says:

    AMEN! Brother WS99!
    AMEN!

Really? Who said he was hopeless?

  39. BuccaneEric Says:

Being a mentor doesn’t mean somebody will be following him around to make sure he gets dressed in the morning or to make sure he brushes his teeth at night. It’s a professional to help him transition to the Pro game. GMC will help him at One Buc, nothing more. Then he’ll throw his suitcase at him!” Carry my bags Rookie”!! Lol

  40. Patrick in VA Says:

@Salish – You’re asking a commenter to substantiate a comment. That’s not really what folks do here. This is more of a place where people throw out base-less opinions and don’t deal with the burden of having to formulate a decent opinion, much less back up those opinions with facts and analysis

  41. BuccaneEric Says:

I think Bo Jackson said he was hopeless.

  42. Patrick in VA Says:

I really hope that bogeyking thinks that Bo Jackson was an FSU alum

Complete B.S. So now JW haters have to resort to making up crap. Go troll somewhere else idiot.

  44. Eric Says:

And what is the evidence that Jameis Winston goes to strip clubs?

  45. Tom Edrington Says:

Jameis can stay at Gerald’s house. It has a marvelous guest suite over the garage, perfect for Winston.

Here in Tampa Palms, quiet community, no night life for Mr. Crab Legs. He can hang out with G-Mac in the big house, it has a great pool, tennis court, basketball court and fronts on the golf course.

No clubs out here, except golf clubs so that should keep The Chosen One out of trouble.

  46. Patrick in VA Says:

Why does everyone think that Winston is a club guy? That hasn’t been in any of the reports about bad behavior that he’s had.

    ————————————————————————–

you mean like derrick brooks? lol people that want Winston was a sure thing at quarterback and ON THE FIELD where it counts Winston is better. only thing what will upset Winston supporters is if Winston and mariota aren’t the pick. meanwhile Winston haters damn what will you do if he’s the pick? you nuts talk as if it’s impossible which only shows your delusional and getting too much sun…every pick is an option including Winston especially Winston. 7 more days and joebuc will be obligated to call police and put them on suicide watch near st pete bridge

  48. ATrain Says:

    WS99. Really

Only difference is Tom Brady is a proven Veteran.

    Winston is a kid..

But you Blind Followers will pull anything out to defend this kid..So funny

Too Funny this kid hasn’t thrown a pass in the NFL and you compare him to Tom Brady…

I don’t think even 87 would do that

  49. WS99 Says:

Yup and Peyton manning too! Deal with it! #passion

And I compare Mariota to kellen Moore, colt McCoy, and Alex smith who btw threw zero TD to his WRs last year. Chit we can even say Vince young and geno smith. Spread offense qbs can’t play in the NFL. Better hope chip Kelly drafts him or he’ll be in rehab like manziel. Except it will be physical rehabilitation on his legs. #garbage’

  50. WS99 Says:

    Atrain

One more thing, aren’t you comparing Mariota to russell Wilson? So does that make you a hypocrite or just a moron?

  51. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Time to “Circle the Wagons” again……get used to it….

  52. ATrain Says:

    WS99. You are funny..

The only Azz I have met in here..

Spout off about a boy who hasn’t thrown a ball and compare him to the greatest in the game. And you call me moron..

Actually there are several post who compare Winston to Wilson as a running QB.
My comparing Wilson and Mariota go has far as to say a running QB can make it in NFL without injury. But you would have to read and that is difficult for you..

All you want to do is praise the Boy Wonder….
Winston Blind Follow…Ignorance is bliss you prove it

  53. Eric Says:

So we have established that no one has any info on Jameis visiting strip clubs, or anything to back up the claim big name FSU alums called him hopeless when Jimbo brought them in to mentor him.

Another day in hater la la land.

  54. bucs4lyfe Says:

lol what can you expect…no one here knows anything about football outside of watching or reporting it…doesn’t make you more knowledgeable one way or the other, joe is in the know of other people who have a more educated opinion well educated opinion most of the time.

only reason Russell Wilson is running this offense is probably because he’s short and has to be mobile in the backfield. tom brady doesn’t have to be mobile because he can stand tall in the pocket. Russell Wilson is a quarterback who can run not a running quarterback. mariota is rg3 in skillset and when you admit you have to learn how to huddle nah you shouldn’t be the bucs quarterback.

  55. Bogeyking Says:

Since Joe will just delete my posted links like he always does, I suggest you Winston suck-ups and man-crushers that are in such denial, go to Google and research a little and you will find a list of athletes and FSU alum that was brought in by Jimbo and FSU to mentor Winston and what they actually said about him.(Yes, 2 actually said he was Hopeless) It may be shocking to you and you will find ways to discredit these well known folks, but there it is. So break out of your blind Ignorance for a short time and see what your boy is really like. Maybe you’ll realize how really Idiotic you are

  56. WS99 Says:

    ATrain

Here you go sir, this is what you can expect from Mariota. He looks more like manziel than Wilson if you ask me. But what do I know, I can only support my posts with video evidence not like you pulling bs out of your azz. Don’t tell me I’m stupid, show me. Proof your bs with some evidence.

  57. Smart1 Says:

I beleive that Winston met both of his alleged (cough cough) victims in a club/bar

  58. WS99 Says:

    Bogeyking

Can you suggest any keywords for the “hopeless” article? All I find is Bo Jackson stating that he tried to mentor him but didn’t go into specifics.

I did find this from Jason licht, pretty fckn awesome if you ask me.

We all know shooting a game of pool with a few friends at popbellies (know as Popbellies family restaurant) is the same thing as frequenting strip clubs all the time.

The more I read the comments from these haters the more I realize they have done zero homework on these players. I’m just thankful the Bucs did theirs and are comfortable making Jameis the 1st overall pick.

  60. Stanglassman Says:

    @WS99
Thanks for that highlight. I can’t believe Jameis got down the field 25 yards to make that block for the TD. I do think Jason L. is in love with Jameis.

  61. WS99 Says:

    Stan

Did you hear what the comment or said. The ball carrier ran the 3rd fastest 100m in ncaa history. How the heck did winston and his 5.0 40 time catch up to him? Passion that’s how. 🙂

That was in college against a college defenses that will be lucky to put 5 players in the NFL. GMC just got through saying in his presser that the athletes in the NFL are way better than college athletes. Where they played like superman in college but then find out they aren’t as dominate against NFL athletes. Winston with his Glennonisk 5 second 40 won’t find it easy to escape NFL players.

  65. tval Says:

Who is gonna mentor mariota ‘on the field’ the next decade if tampa picks him? Glennon, thats who, because he’ll be starting..lmao!!

  66. bjax Says:
