Jameis Watch: The Next Eli

February 7th, 2015

jameis 1215

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

Let Joe ask you, if the Bucs could draft an Eli Manning clone coming out of college, would you take the bait? Joe would fall over himself with that opportunity. Couldn’t fill out the draft card fast enough.

Well, Lance Zierlein of NFL.com believes Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is the second coming of Manning.

Winston’s body type and release are very much like Byron Leftwich’s, but when you look at his skill set, his ability and his penchant for making poor decisions in giving the ball away unnecessarily with interceptions, that’s more like Eli. His game is more like Eli’s because he can hurt the other team and his own team with some of his decision making. The talent is there. The easy comparison is to Leftwich because he’s not a very mobile quarterback and has a very elongated delivery.

Ah, Winston is much more mobile than Leftwich, come on. Joe even spoke to an NFL general manager who was smitten with how quick Winston is as opposed to how quick he looked on TV.

As clutch as Manning is (two rings), Joe thinks Bucs fans would go wild with the thought of Winston winning two Super Bowl rings, as unrealistic as that sounds.

Eli Manning with the no. 1 pick the draft? Not sure about that.

2 SB wins, of course that would be amazing. But if that is the comparison, the chances of it happening are extremely, extremely low.

  2. unbelievable Says:

The comparison to traits of Eli and Leftwich are pretty spot on from the games I’ve watched.

  4. White Tiger Says:

Great – the worst attributes of two very average starting QB’s…

More facts and clearer comparisons are being made.

Also, in order to get this guys attention – and to get him in the proper frame of mind for the amount of WORK he’s going to have to do to become really “NFL READY” – Fameis is going to need to slide down the draft board to make him WANT to listen to coaching to get better, to prove all those detractors wrong. He’s got talent, he just has no self-discipline, and his ego is simply WAY too big.

..just think there are too many teams (i.e., Tennessee) that NEED a QB so bad, they won’t let the correct lesson be taught.

He’s got enough talent to play in the NFL, he’s just SO far from being “NFL ready” from a maturity standpoint.

  5. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Cause I’m all about that Jameis, that Jameis…..No Mariota!

  6. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    More Cow Bell Joe….

  7. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

What do Vick, Cam, RGIII, and Mariota have in common?

    They get hurt….a lot.

  8. White Tiger Says:

Eli wouldn’t have two super bowl rings without Tiki Barber and that defense.

You don’t have to look beyond Peyton’s season in Denver this year to see what Eli’s fate would have been had it not been for both Barber and that Strahan led defense…

Famous wouldn’t be getting the benefit of either of them.

  9. Dave Pear Says:

I honestly thought this debate was over.
The World Renowned Prognosticator WS99 has already said that we are taking
    Jameis Winston.
    Conversation over.
    We are taking Jameis Winston.
    Get used to it.
    Welcome to Tampa Mr. Winston.

  10. MadMax Says:

@87, man you’re cracking me up with your references to pop songs, LOL!

  11. BKNYfootballhead Says:

    @ White Tiger

Tiki Barber never earned a ring. He quit his team under contract like an immature brat because his coach was a big meanie head.

  12. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Mariota > Winston if we keep the pick

  13. jb Says:

It’s that Leftwich-like delivery of Winston’s that scares hell outta me.

  14. MadMax Says:

He’ll be the Eli for someone else…..Williams or trade down!

  15. Arealbucsfan Says:

@white tiger. Did u seriously say that? Lol what a joke. Tiki quit before he could win the SB with Eli. Get ur facts straight

  16. Dave Pear Says:

    Uh-Oh White Tiger,
I hate it when facts screw up a great argument.

  17. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Well Lovie waited too long…Richie is going to sign with the Bills
Mariota > Winston……if we don’t trade down twice

  18. Joseph Mamma Says:

Did they freaking just say he throw’s like Byron Leftwiche? No thanks, take Mariota. He seems like a better prospect down the road to me. Mariotta might be the best athlete in the whole NFC south and won’t show up on the police blotter. Case closed.

  19. Cascade Says:

    Mariota.

  20. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Um, no thank you. I’ll take the 2 Super Bowl rings, but Eli Manning is the polar opposite of his brother Peyton. Peyton Manning is the best regular-season QB of all time, but is a chronic choke artist in the playoffs. Eli Manning is the definition of a man carried by a team during the regular season, but somehow unleashes his inner Joe Montana during the playoffs. It baffles me.

Oh, and if Manning knew how to throw, Odell Beckham Jr. wouldn’t have been the next Johnny Rehab of the media for his spectacular catch.

  21. ndog Says:

His delivery is nothing like Leftwich these people are crazy. He is not mobile? Are you kidding me with that? Does this guy even watch the games? He also played the last 5 regular season games worn a badly sprained ankle but still played and won them all. Not having a good base will throw ones mechanics way off. But let’s not point out the facts let’s just make random comparisons to other black qbs. This guy is s hack.

  22. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

ndog…you must admit Jameis has a long wind up with a 3/4 delivery….

  23. Skyline Crew Says:

No thanks to Eli. He isn’t that great. Would prefer Wilson and Peyton over Eli. Eli is probably the most overrated QB in the NFL.

  24. skipper Says:

Dave Pear! I doubt many here remember him, the first Buc to go to the pro bowl. He was an awesome defensive tackle. The Bucs are taking Winston. He is a winner.

  25. Skyline Crew Says:

    @87

You forgot to add Romo, Rodgers, Manning, Rivera, Dalton, almost every QB is injured. Just whether they play through it. And they all do.

  26. skipper Says:

be aware of the bear! Dave Pear.

    • C-Shaun O’Hara-3-time Pro Bowler
    • RG-Chris Snee-2nd round (34th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft.
    • RT-David Diehl-1-time Pro Bowler

    Note:
    • Two Premium Picks Luke Petitgout/ Chris Snee
    • Two Future Pro Bowlers- Shaun O’Hara/ David Diehl

Amazing how so many successful QB’s walked into turnkey offensive lines.
Equally sad to see so many QB’s with potential played with terrible offensive lines.

Turned skittish, and terrified’ under relentless pressure–and never panned out.

  28. skipper Says:

As an old guy here, lets remember Jimmy Dubose the first Buc to rush over a 1,000 yards, Sarasota product.

  29. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Eli benefited from a productive offensive line, and a great defensive front. There’s no way he’s wins —two Super Bowls without that DLine.

  30. RastaMon Says:

Jimmy Dubois was awesome….I can still see the play when he blew out his knee…

  31. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @skipper

Yeah Jimmy was a beast-that entire Dubose family is full of athlete’s though

  32. lurker Says:

winston is like roethlisberger. same stature, mobility, and throwing mechanics.

from a fansided article dated 1/17/15:
“Manning — “It’s not like trying to throw a baseball, where a baseball you come all the way down here.”

Peyton describes exactly what Jameis Winston does — dips and throws the ball like a baseball player would. That makes sense, since Winston does play baseball for Florida State.

He will need to get his throwing motion ironed out for the combine and the draft and eventually, for when he takes the field on Sundays.

Winston can make the dip work. His throwing motion reminds me of Ben Roethlisberger’s motion, and Big Ben had a pretty darn good season in 2014. Here is Big Ben throwing, and compare that to Winston above.

This style of throwing isn’t ideal, but when you are as talented as Winston is, this mechanical flaw can be overlooked and can be fixed with good coaching in the NFL.”

  33. DraftWinston Says:

Have yall seen the video of winstons improved mechanics/throwing motion??

  34. Bucnut2 Says:

This confirms what I have been saying all along.. Eli=Phil sims=flacco. No way to either one with the 1 overall. Both of guys need great pieces around them. Sorry joe no way I take Eli 1. We must trade down.

  35. Rrsrq Says:

We used to have sign that read “we came here today, to see Jimmy Du play, his family lived down the street from me, one of my best moments when as a kid I met, Lee Roy Selmon, Jimmy Giles at Jimmy du’s parents house

“2015 NFL Mock Draft: Jameis Winston too talented for Bucs to pass up”

By Rob Rang | The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com

    1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State: Winston’s off-field issues are a significant concern but allowing the local product to slip through their grasp might be even more frightening to head coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jason Licht. Smith might be precisely the steady hand that Winston needs to take full advantage of his undeniable talent. It isn’t difficult to imagine Tampa’s offense making a huge improvement in 2015 with the strong-armed and accurate Winston firing passes to huge targets Mike Evans, Vincent Jackson and Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

  38. Mike10 Says:

Manning won 2 SB’s with a great team and coach. They got hot at the right time and Eli just limited his mistakes, but wasn’t the reason they got there. And guys, the pieces were all around him!

Give us Tom Brady and were not making the playoffs with these Bums

  39. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    J A M E I S……Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  40. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Jameis!

  41. Bucnut2 Says:

Lurker nice try. He’ll be under increased pressure in the nfl and his accuracy and int will increase. Bs don’t perform better in the nfl, they perform worse than college. We’ve alrea seen the best of Winston. Trade down!

  42. Bucnut2 Says:

    Accuracy decrease, int increase

  43. Arealbucsfan Says:

I want Winston mor than Mariota but with Winston’s delivery being compared to Leftwich; it kinda scares me off.

  44. MadMax Says:

Preach it Brotha LUV! Even when its falling on deaf ears, keep preaching!

  45. Tiny Tim Says:

All you posters that keep saying Eli would not have won if he didn’t have a good o-line or d-line etc are way off. Tell me one qb that would have won a super bowl without a good team around him? Its a team game people. Eli was just as big of a factor as any other piece on those teams hence the two super bowl MVP awards. I mean Eli has been a pro bowler as well. Lets not act like he is some kind of scrub. Is he the best? No, but he is far from a scrub.

  46. lurker Says:

just cause you say so, right bucnut?

    roethlisberger did well in 2014.

    win, it’s in his name
    #winninwithwinston #justwinstonbaby

  47. lurker Says:

who wouldn’t want eli instead of mccown or glennon?

  48. Jameisisnotarapist Says:

    Welcome to Tampa Jameis Winston!

  49. lurker Says:

why the hell have coaches if everyone is going to revert back to whatever they did in the sandlot under pressure? smh

either way, i’m sure that the bucs’ brass will do their due diligence for all the players at the top of the draft. they know more than us (it just doesn’t feel like it at times)

  50. Nybucsfan Says:

Jameis is a steaming pile and he is not fast that’s being dumb what’s his average yards per rush I think it’s around 1.8. Bucs are anti rape

  51. lurker Says:

and what kind of person is a new yorker?

  52. DraftWinston Says:

Bucnut that is a possibility that he reverts back to old ways but to compare winston to tebow is ridiculous with winstons intelligence football iq and pure passing talent along with his ability to be coached up in my opinion since within a week or two is showing far better mechanics and with an off season and preseason there’s the good possibility of him being able to re program but who knows until he’s been around for a couple years I just feel he’s the best chance we have at a franchise qb that could win us division titles and more and the reward of having that vs the risk of him getting into trouble is far better to me especially considering if he does flop lovie is gone within another year or two and without without a true franchise qb new coaches/gm would want their own handpicked qb/guys anyway leading to yet another overhaul

  53. BigMacAttack Says:

We are so screwed…. for years to come.

  54. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

OMG…this is just getting out of hand. Winston is NOWHERE CLOSE TO ANY MANNING. Never will be either.

In 5 years, Winston will not even be considered one of the top three QBs in this draft.

  55. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @MadMax

    Lol, sad but true.

Carson Palmer- 1st round (1st overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft.
    • LT-Levi Jones- 1st round (10th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft.
    • LG-Eric Steinbach- 2nd round (33rd overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft.
    • RG-Bobbie Williams- 2nd round (61st overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft.
    • RT-Willie Anderson- 1st round (10th overall) of the 1996 NFL Draft.

    Note
C-Rich Braham was a seasoned 10yr vet (Free Agent Signing)

Unlike most quarterbacks drafted first overall, Palmer did not play at all during his rookie season; instead, Palmer learned the position during games and in practice under head coach Marvin Lewis and quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese as veteran quarterback Jon Kitna, who signed with the Bengals as an unrestricted free agent in 2001

If we draft Winston, and he does anything wrong, he could be suspended by the NFL right away. We could lose him to suspension his first year.

There is no such risk with Mariota. Not that Mariota couldn’t do anything wrong, just that he hasn’t so far.

So, if we draft Mariota, we can safely trade Glennon, and we’ll get good value for that trade.

If we draft Winston, we have to walk on eggshells, and we have to keep Glennon.

Was this supposed to be positive article on Winston?? I read it 3 times and I couldn’t find one positive thing in it about him, Byron Leftwich and Eli’s turnovers are not a positive JOE, not sure what you were trying to accomplish with this article. Are you finding it harder and harder to find a positive articles on Winston out there? If anything this just supports more of a reason to take Mariota

Who the ef is Lance Zierlein you ask? Ask SuperSam…because he puts a lot of stock in this guy… or I’ll tell you who he is.

Lance is known for his multiple personalities and ADD that create the various characters present in the 790 AM shows. Namely: SEC Guy, Dr. Karol Kenton Kogslotter

Lance also performs impressions of sports personalities. Examples include:

    “Uncle” Drayton McLane
Mack Brown and his unwavering media message
    John Rocker
    Charles Barkley
    Lou Holtz
    Oscar De La Hoya

Lance is also an active blogger for the Houston Chronicle and publishes a “fantasy” newsletter and runs an accompanying fantasy news site called The Sideline View.

Oh and his mock draft selection for #1 overall. Jameis Winston Tampa Bay Buccaneers :

    1. Winston has warts to be sure, but pairing him with Mike Evans could ultimately prove to be too enticing for the Bucs to pass on.

Stand behind him if he succeeds or wish upon his failure and if he fails that means the bucs fail and considering yall keep suggesting he will flop and be a complete bust with it being a 50/50 chance of us taking winston or mariota seems like your putting failure on our team already I definitely prefer winston over mariota for many reasons but would stand by my team with whoever they pick even if I disagree and would not wish or suggest anybody we might draft become a bust all it does it hurt our team if they do

  100. Senor Mofo Says:

Winston is exceptional. Mariota is exceptional.

  101. Pat Says:

You do not have to hate someone to like someone else. It is simple, I prefer Mariota over Winston. No hate there. Whoever is picked by the Bucs, then let’s welcome the new Bucs. Either One or the Other or Neither. Correct?

Yea, ndog I agree. This guy is an idiot. Way more mobile than leftwitch and a better release too. What a joke this guy is.

  107. knuckledragger Says:

The easy comparison is to Leftwich because he’s not a very mobile quarterback and has a very elongated delivery.
    ………………..
    At least Tebow was mobile.

  108. Senor Mofo Says:

Jameis Winston is one of the best college quarterbacks I’ve ever seen play the game. So is Marcus Mariota.

Jameis winston will play good football in the NFL. He will make dazzling plays that will leave you wondering how anyone could do that. He will also make spectacular mistakes that will leave you wondering the same thing.

But, Marcus Mariota will do those same things as well.

After three or four seasons, at least one of these players will have the emotional maturity to have mastered the pro game.

I hope it’s both of them.

But, if you own a billion-dollar franchise, who are you more willing to bet your franchise on with the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft?

  109. the real Buck Bruce Says:

we’ve seen Winston run a pro style offense in college and he’s great.we haven’t seen him run a pro style offense in the NFL and what he does in college doesn’t mean he’ll do be able to do it in the NFL.we have yet to see Marcus Mariota run a pro style offense he could be out of this world great who says he sucks just cuz you never had the chance to do it that’s just f****** stupid.he could be the best at a pro style offense than anyone in this world we have no idea.

real Buck Bruce makes too much sense

  112. BoltIsle Says:

I wouldn’t say race plays a part in this debate as much as being a hypocrite.

Common theme in the Winston/Mariota threads: people who dislike Winston seem to hate him with a passion that causes borderline personal attacks (Such as convicting him of rape when he hasn’t even been charged). To the point that they would enjoy attacking him personally if the Bucs drafted him more than rooting for him and the team to succeed. It’s a situation where they are trying to live out the squeaky wheel gets the grease to legislate their morality on everyone.

If the Bucs drafted Mariota, I have not seen one instance where the Winston followers have said they would not buy tickets and /or root for him and the team to fail.

Then to bring Tebow into this, there’s a reason nobody wanted him after Denver acknowledged their mistake. Tremendous athlete, hardly a pro QB. If he would have been willing to play fullback or TE, would be all for signing him.
He, delusionally, thinks he’s a pro QB.

    SMH…………

  113. knuckledragger Says:

    True Bolt.
Tebow is announcing. He is still 9 and 7 with a Playoff win on a team that won 5 of its last 22 games before he took over.

  116. Brandon Says:

Leftwich? Are you kidding me? Winston’s tiny wind-up is nothing compared to Leftwich’s… and his mobility is light years beyond Leftwich…that’s a ridiculous comparison, A Texans fan friend of mine used to live in Houston and he says Zierlein is utterly clueless and how he has/had a job was a miracle. I think I know what he’s talking about now.

    —————

He’s announcing because he had ZERO opportunities to return to the field… ZERO! You can talk all you want about 9-7 and playoffs etc, but the truth is that he was a spread option-only QB that wasn’t even as good at the spread option as some of the other guys that came a little later that could run faster and throw better (Kaepernick, RG3) and then the NFL figured out the spread option.

Following Tebow and the Broncos lead, many teams incorporated the spread/read option into a large percentage of their offenses and were wildly effective…but defenses caught on and now the read option is merely a look or a few plays a game for offenses. Tebow went 9-7 and went to the playoffs because his defense played well, teams had never seen or had to prepare for the read option, and Tebow did a DECENT job of doing it…but compare his stats to RG3’s rookie season, Russell Wilson 2012-2013, Kaepernick 2012-2013…and you can clearly see…he wasn’t even all that good at the read-option and unlike the other 3 QBs, he didn’t have a good enough skillset physically or mentally to also be successful as a dropback passer.

Great freaking rationale…. just because Winston has done it in college but not in the NFL tells us nothing, but just because Mariota has never done it in his life, he might be great!

Ladies and Gentleman, I think we’ve found our new punter in Demar Dotson. He’s never done it before but with his long legs he should be great!

Hey stupid, Tiki Barber played on NONE of those Super Bowl winning teams! Seriously? STFU!

Of course, don’t you see what’s going on here. Find a marginal black QB to compare the up and coming black QB to. It is done all the time. This clown is the only one spewing this non sense.

  121. Brandon Says:

File this in the “Who the Hell Cares” folder but of all the mocks listed on http://dcprosportsreport.com/MockDraft.htm since 2/17

These are the players that were drafted #1 overall by the Bucs
    Winston 43X
    Mariota 15X
    L. Williams 3X

Some of the mocks on here are a little more or less reliable/credible than others…but it really doesn’t matter, Winston is picked over Mariota nearly 75% of the time…. and it probably has a TON to do with the fact that he is a better player.

My favorite one is to call him JaMarcus Russell because he’s black, has a big arm, and they think he’ll be a bust. Russell ate himself out of the league, Winston wears a flak jacket when he plays so his haters think he is “fat”.

@Brandon, give it up man. Facts don’t sway these people.

Hopefully Lovie has the sense to draft the best QB and not a project.

Draft Winston and enjoy the ride.

    You guys are a trip.

MikeH…you can’t be helped and that goes for everyone else that takes stock in what this radio comedian has to say. HILARIOUS!

  127. DRAFT #5 Says:

Draftng a QB at #1 is the only option . No way does any frachise pass on drafting a possible franchise not to mention possiby two. All the trade down comments are fantasy. No way that happens. That will surely get both L & L fired by the end of the season.

As to which QB should be taken it should not even be a question. Jameis Winston is by far a the better prospect. He can make all the throws and can be mobile when needed. He is the most pro style ready QB in the draft. L & L have to win this year or at least show promise to get another year or they are gone. MM will need to sit for at least a few years to be serviceable.

I did a little research on MM. What really scares me is running QB are not successful in this league beacuse the talent level is so elevated. In addtion they tend to get hurt. We are talking about players much larger and faster then the typical college player. MM will get hurt and is injury prone. In 2013
he had a knee injury and 2014 a knee injury and shoulder injury. Also if you look at his losses over his time at Oregon they have come agaist very phsyical defences. Stanford Twice, Arizona and Ohio State. A major red flag. Another thing that really bothered me was in the national championship game he had a reciever drop a wide open touchdown pass. As a leader of the team I would expect him to go over to the kid and tell him don’t worry about it and encourage him. What does MM do he stands on the sideline by himself and the coach is picking the kid up. Also at the end of the game when it was clear they were going to have to come up with a drive what is MM doing standing by himself not getting his offense together talking them up. Again very disturbing. I want my QB to be a leader not one of the guys.

I want a firey QB. For me it is easy Draft Jamies. I won’t comment on the off field stuff because it has been discussed over and over. I will say one thing however on the rape charge he has been cleared by three independent agenices now. The law is based on innocent until proven guilty. Lets stop convicting the kid over and over again.
