McCoy Reveals Changed Emphasis In Practice

November 1st, 2014

gerald mccoy 0916Last week, per Gerald McCoy, your beloved Bucs headed to practice and “highly and overly emphasized” generating takeaways.

Sadly, they didn’t get one against the Vikings. Never fear. This week there was a new focus in practice.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network, McCoy explained that defensive linemen were given more running to do in Wednesday’s physical practice in full pads.

The goal, per McCoy, was inspiring D-linemen to be more active reading their keys and running to the football, subsequently getting more tackles and involvement in checkdown and screen throws.

“They wanted the D-linemen all the way down the field trying to get the [wide] receivers today,” McCoy said of the extra emphasis on sprinting among his fellow beasts on the line.

There could be many reasons for an increased focus on running defensive linemen. Joe’s not going to list them. But it comes as no surprise, as all offseason Lovie Smith talked about how he demands 11 men running like uncaged animals to the football. Bucs fans have rarely been treated to that.

    Joe

    I think Lovie forgot to open the cage for them, please remind him next time you see him.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Run to the football and wear yourself out by the 2nd half….so you can give up another game-winning drive.

  3. Joseph Mamma Says:

    From the looks of it, this team played harder for Schiano. I’m guessing because he demanded it. I’m not saying Schiano was the greatest coach, I’m just referring to effort.

  4. Buc Fan #237 Says:

    If players of today won’t respect a Mike Singletary or even Jim Harbaugh… both coaches who have played the game before in the NFL… what makes you think they are gonna respect Lovie Smith and his antiquated schemes?

  5. SAMCRO Says:

    All sounds swell. Let’s hope that the Browns don’t emulate Pacman and evade all eleven of our ghost.

  6. RealityCheck Says:

    it’s widely accepted that you want to practice against the best competition to raise your game. Our offense practices against our terrible defense. Our defense practices against our horrible offense. See the problem here?

  7. Tom Edrington Says:

    Hooptee, freaking do…….don’t forget, touchdowns count six points….

  8. billy buckaroo Says:

    This seems about as bright as practicing in the soaring heat to get an “edge”

  9. SeanyMac in SC Says:

    Tackle first, then work on ripping the ball out. Too many times I see guys arm tackling to try to get the turn over, and the ball carrier just continues down the field gaining more yardage. This is what is being coached. SMH.

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

    And the beat goes on, rather the beatdowns go on.

  11. RCH Says:

    The whole team should have been laps right after the Vikings game.

  12. The Buc Realist Says:

    i can’t wait to see the defense beat down tomorrow by the Browns, Just so i can read Joe’s assessment on how the defense has ” taken a step back” !

  13. Ray Rice Says:

    After tomorrow’s loss JOE will forget about reporting real news and focus on ASJ like he always does and how much of a beast he looks in pads. No matter how much he sucks. Slobbing his knob all day long. Kind of like Mark Schlereth for ESPN. Dumbas$ always finds a way to talk about the Broncos even before they got Manning. Pathetic.

    Dude, what are you talking about? No reason to make stuff up. –Joe

  14. buc4lyfe Says:

    See this year off proves lovie has no Damn clue what he’s doing. A year of watching every team and breaking down film just to come here and do the exact same thing that got him fired. Took you almost 8 games to realize having your lineman more active against screens and short drops may help? You had everyone drop weight and get faster for nothing

    Cleveland win 4 games with a receiver I can name, Brian hoyer and a brand new head coach. We have talent but McCoy was right they are soft, we should be playing in a church league. What a mistake lovie was

  15. Taking back Sunday Says:

    Why bother?

  16. biff barker Says:

    More babble.

    Line up and play.

  17. OMG I MISS SCHIANO Says:

    Lol… Our coaching is horrible. We need to emphasize our D linemen getting UP the field, not DOWN the field. Or maybe we’ve totally given up on that. SMDH. I can’t believe how bad we suck. #FireLovie

  18. The Buc Realist Says:

    Cannot wait to here what the excuse will be for One of the NFL’s top paid D-line after the game tomorrow!

    Glad i am not the only who has noticed that, so true.

  20. MGM4Life Says:

    Lovie Smith – – -Need more Schiano, less Morris. I really think this is part of the problem too.

  21. jo_mama Says:

    I never liked GMC. I always thought he was soft. I never liked helping your opponent off the field after you knocked him down.

    I was hoping that we traded GMC to New England for a 1st and a second round pick.

    If we want to build through the draft we need to make some bold moves.

  22. buccanAy Says:

    One of Lovie first big mistakes, IMO, of course, was having the Bucs practice in the hottest part of the day in TC. Forget the rain and lightning, when you’re installing new offense and defense, you want the players to be at their BEST and most alert, and where fatigue and heat are at a minimum. You want them at their PEAK, both mentally and physically, and that is not at 5pm in the hottest time of day.

  23. "TheKevin" Says:

    @everyone

    For all you losers that don’t know anything about anything other than waiting on your food stamp card to be loaded. That would be called lovie coaching the team up. Can’t say he isn’t trying.

    Maybe just maybe you absolute morons don’t understand that you need the right players and right now they don’t have the right players.

    So sit down strap in and STFU. Maybe you all will learn something about footie ball. Most of you praised the offseason moves now you all act like you knew something and want a coach that’s had 7 games to be fired.

    And that right there shows how stupid you fuxcks really are. Go be a packer fan or something. Otherwise give the man a couple years and then break out the Fire lovie shiiit. Until then stfu cause you all sound as about as smart as the do do that’s comes out of my axss!!

  24. "TheKevin" Says:

    @omgretard

    What the hell do you know about coaching you fuxck stain. Walking afterbirth with a voicebox. Stfu you retarded axss moron.

  25. "TheKevin" Says:

    So glad most of you will not be coaching anything at all. Especially not a football team cause most of you are WAY too stupid to understand anything.

    All I hear is fire fire fire he doesn’t know anything blah blah blah

    Bunch of shiiit stains for brains.

  26. "TheKevin" Says:

    @jo mama

    Well thank god your stupid assxss isn’t running anything but your ****sucker

  27. "TheKevin" Says:

    @omgi miss shiano

    Weren’t you one of the fuxck tards that wanted shiano fired?

    Now you miss him? Lmao man that right there shows how stupid you are and how little you really know lol.

    Running around “fire shiano fire shiano”

    Now look at you! Lol your stupidity is shinning through

    I would like to welcome you along with the others to the
    “Shiiit for brains mob”

    So far your the president. Congrats.

  28. buccanAy Says:

    this kevin dude is WAY out of control….is this acceptable on this site?

  29. IdahoBucsfan Says:

    I feel This year, like Joe felt Last year about the head coach. 🙁 Oh.. lets try running them more! But Schiano ran them too hard! This is “bull spit”!

  30. Chrs Says:

    @TheKevin

    Dude you haven’t said anything to insightful at all, your just calling everybody names. You sound like a god damn idiot. Why don’t you explain how you feel and WHY you feel that way? To me you sound way more f’ing stupid than anyone here.

  31. "TheKevin" Says:

    @chrs

    Do you think trying to explain something to these masses would help?

    I’ve tried they just say blah blah fire lovie blow up everything yawn yawn yawn

  32. ddneast Says:

    Really, BucRealist. You consider yourself a fan but a the same times say, “I can’t wait till the Bucs defense gets abeatdown tomorrow?”
    What exactly is your agenda.
    Seriously, you really can’t consider yourself a fan of the Bucs can you.
    What a frustrated tiny little man you must be.

  33. "TheKevin" Says:

    Maybe if some of you would talk substance instead of “fire everybody”
    We could have an intelligent conversation about it. But intelligence is nowhere to be found on here.

    I’m sick of fire everybody. Go be a fan of another team.

  34. "TheKevin" Says:

    @ddeast

    The agenda for them is to get lovie fired blow up everything start over AGAIN and then complain about the next coach. Pretty simple really.

    That’s half the dang problem is all the turnover.

  35. ddneast Says:

    Kevin! I understand your frustration with many of these moronic posts but try to ease up on the 4 letter words and the constant references to excrement.
    The only thing you are achieving is lowering yourself to the same intellectual level are the idiots you are criticizing.
    Try to be more clever with your language when you are disparaging these
    f!?ktards.

  36. "TheKevin" Says:

    @ddeast

    Well your right my man.

    It is soooo frustrating. I’m just as pissed about the bucs as the next guy but you gotta give the man some time. And then to come in here and talk about shiano after they wanted him gone is absurd.

    I really feel that the public had a lot to do with shiano getting fired. Maybe the billboards? Saying fire shiano? I’m sure the glazers saw that on their way in.

    I don’t want to see that happen to lovie before he gets time to build something.

    Can we at least refer to them as the “stupid mob”?

  37. buccanAy Says:

    What have you seen from Lovie, from a personell standpoint, that makes you think he’s capable of building something? What is YOUR message…is it that fans should just “shut up”, and not question what Lovie is doing? What decision has he made, so far, that gives you confidence in his ability to make the personell decisions that will improve this team going forward? I’ve not seen you bring ANYTHING to the table here, except criticsm, no “intelligent” commentary on anything.

  38. buccanAy Says:

    I will agree that it is hard to have a rational, intelligent conversation on this board, but be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

  39. MGM4Life Says:

    @ “the Kevin” If you are such a football genius why did I not hear you call into the radio show when Coach Schiano was on taking calls from fans last year? You remind me of guys in prison who talk tough then b!tc# up when your card is pulled. Truth be known you are a skinny, pimply faced teenager in your parents nice middle class home talking smack on various blogs because girls have no interest in you (or the other way around). See how it feels to be insulted by a total stranger. We are all frustrated fans, we are all searching for answers, it is painful enough to watch this beloved team descend into failure as it does. One week you think it can’t get any worse…yet it does. So many, many questions and not one real answer. Lighten up.

  40. Buc1987 Says:

    Blah, blah, blah and more blah. I told you all last week we’d be hearing the same old crap the next week and here we are.

    Blah blah blah…we need to get better at this and we need to get better at that. Then come game time none of the talk shows up on the field and that includes you too McCrap.

    Why change things now on the practice field? If you knew this might be a solution to some problems then why didn’t you practice it in August?

    Blah blah blah.

    Tune in next week for more blah blah blah….we’re going to get better at this and that. BLAH!

    ______________________________________________-

    Dude. ASJ is a rookie. Need anyone remind you that very few rookies make an impact right away. Chill.

    Can’t you guys see that Kevin is just a troll? And not a very good one at that. You all should just ignore him. He’s pulling your chains.

    BTW way, I seem to recall that Dungy’s team always ran to the ball.

  42. Soggy Says:

    How much time does a coach need to not hire hester, build a worse oline than we had last year, hire frazier the great for DC and just let the OC thing do what ever and last week say we are still in it.. The kick return crap my god what a joke, Oh and what a genius with him crowning mcCown, pure genius, he reminds me of someone who should do the opposite of what the are thinking.. Lovie Is bad for Tampa.. Until he starts showing some real coaching skills he sucks = simple as that..

  43. Buccfan37 Says:

    “The Kevin” and ddneast… read like a match made in hell. Glad you two found each other. You stupid insult laden morons. Get a room bitches.
