Advice Is Low Priority For Mariota

February 19th, 2015

Mariota2It’s widely known that Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota comes from a college spread offense that doesn’t look much like what is seen in the NFC South on any given Sunday. (Neither does the Bucs’ offense, but that’s not the point here.)

As Joe stood before Mariota today at the NFL Scouting Combine media grilling session, a specific question arose about his upcoming transition.

Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune asked Mariota if he’s been talking to current and former NFL quarterbacks who were spread QBs in college like Mariota. You know, was Mariota seeking their take on making the NFL transition?

No, Mariota said.

Of course, that could change in the next nine weeks before the NFL Draft, but it’s interesting that Mariota hasn’t been on the phone yet with guys like Blaine Gabbert, Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, etc.

Perhaps Mariota just wants to stay focused on the key voices in his camp. It’s probably not a bad idea, given how much he’ll be run through the ringer when he goes to private visits and workouts with the Bucs and others. Joe suspects a key focus of that time will be on just how long Mariota’s transition projects to last.

  1. Scott Says:

I’m not sure I really like this guy

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I will be interested in the difference in questions posed to the two QBs…..

  3. MarshallU Says:

Obviously he has absolutely no character concerns or red flags, and he will transistion much quicker than most people think because he is very smart, very athletic, throws the ball very well, and is extremely coachable.

  4. al121976 Says:

I think if he had to call other people to ask how to transition his game, that would make him sound unsure of his ability. I like the guy, I hope we draft him.

  5. Tom Edrington Says:

Joe needed to hear Chris Landry with the Big Dog on 620 this afternoon……major refute on Winston being more NFL ready……

    Very enlightening….

  6. ColoradoBuc Says:

I agree with “Scott” – I’m kinda put off by his attitude – sounds almost snobbish. But I wasn’t there and didn’t read his body language. I’ll pay close attention to his future quotes to see if there is more to this.

  7. bucrightoff Says:

He loves Jesus, Winston loves Publix. You figure out who strong Christian man Lovie Smith is taking.

  8. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Chris Landry was brutally HONEST !!

  9. Mr. Patrick Says:

I’m still sticking to my guns that I hope the Bucs don’t take either top QB. However, if they do insist I really hope it’s this guy

  10. ndog Says:

Chris Landry is a noted liar so what he says means jack and I agree with Scott as I am not sure where all this Mariota love comes from as he does not come across as very likeable. Also he seems to have zero energy, which also came across in the beating they were taking by OSU. If your going to get beat at least go down fighting. His personality reminds me quite a bit of previous Bucs qbs and that is not a compliment.

  11. Bucs#1 Says:

Wow, Chris Landry really took Winston way down while he was on with Duemig. Really thinks Winston will be a bust on and off the field.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Wow….some of you guys should offer your service as talent & personality evaluators to NFL teams….just think….no travel expenses…etc….just watch the player’s presser & render a judgement!!!

My take was totally different….but it had to do with the fact that he didn’t try to avoid any questions and had a quite satisfactory/honest answer to all of them.

I don’t think his “likeability” has ever been questioned at any point in time before your observations.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Scott & Coloradobuc

I will be particularly interested in your evaluation of Winston’s press conference…..

  14. Bucs#1 Says:

You can tell Chris Landry is not impressed with Winston. Wow

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Interesting that the Bucs have interviewed Connor Holliday….a spread option QB from Washington……broken leg last year & all…..projected late round pick…..
Trade down crowd must love this news….

  16. ndog Says:

Im just saying every time I have seen him talk he seems kind of stuck up and emotionless. Sorry but back when I played I related more to players that played with an edge and this guy has ZERO edge which to me is not appealing.

  17. Scott Says:

To me having “character” means more than being polite and quiet. RWilson is a positive polarizing figure. I really don’t see that in Mariota. I see a guy who seems cocky but quiet. Idk something really puts me off about his “character”

JW real to me or at least seems that way.

  18. Eric Says:

He’s not exactly bubbly and full of life.

Kinda like he was applying for head librarian.

  19. Harry Says:

    @TBBF,
Have to agree with you. I think ppl are reading too much into his response. My feeling is I really like the kid, BUT his ability to throw a WR open is a HUGE risk factor (vs the offense he has played in where they are so open they are often standing still waiting for the ball).

If the “speed of the game” is so different for the average player to make the transition, that could double for the QB position

  20. Robert 9 Says:

If we do go QB, I would be happy with him.

    still rather trade the pick.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Seems to me he is adored at Oregon…..and Winston at FSU…..I mean….I really like a lot of players that don’t play well….and don’t qutie like some that play really well.
I am so glad we don’t have a Cam Newton or Manziel to choose from because I don’t like either.

  22. Barry Says:

INDIANAPOLIS — Jameis Winston’s legal worries are not over. Not yet. Not by a long shot.

No, Winston will not go to jail. But the civil lawsuit filed last month against Florida State by the woman who accused Winston of raping her may still be in play well into Winston’s rookie season—and possibly beyond.

No, it will not prevent Winston from being taken first overall in the draft. But it’s not a trivial concern.

  23. ddneast Says:

Funny Bucrightoff. Glad you kept it to what he has been legally charged and convicted of. No problem with that and it’s something Winston better get used to.
Whoever drafts Winston, he better have thick skin and get used to seeing a lot of crab legs in the stands.

  24. Robert 9 Says:

the stadium will need a new section called the crabby corner

  25. Barry Says:

No way the Glazers are going to associate their name with Winston #CivilLawSuitLooming #Denial

  26. Jeagan1999 Says:

A perfect answer by Mariota. Now is not the time he needs a lot of voices in his head telling him to do this or do that. There’s plenty of time for that after he gets drafted. Do what got you here! Now all he needs to do is be himself and focus on putting his best foot forward to show teams that he has the skills and the smarts to be a good NFL QB! Period. I love his no nonsense attitude!

I’d tell Winston the same thing if someone asked him that question!

  27. mark2001 Says:

Having small hands is important while stuffing food in your shorts, and stuffing your hands in them when it is cold outside during cold weather games, so I’m sold on Winston. Only one successful NFL QB with hands that small out of the last few dozen? Sounds like a sure fire choice for us….only have to worry about it during those cold weather games, like the ones we would face in Green Bay during the playoffs….no problem.

  28. Mumbles Says:

Relax, the worst thing that can happen to Mariota is that he falls far enough for Chip Kelly to move up and get him. Which is what he wants anyway. The kid is on cruise control. Can’t fail!

  29. Firethecannons Says:

Why would he take advice from those scrubs? Really Joe? Dalton and Gabbert, lol.

  30. ndog Says:

We have one chance to change our future and his name is not Marcus Mariota. Again I pose the question who is the last qb to do what he is trying to do? And dont even say Wilson as they are not even comparable. Mariota is weak and fragile compared to Wilson. This guy has bust written all over him for a #1 pick. However he would be a fantastic project fourth round pick. I mean he said he not even used to being in a huddle for goodness sake and you want Mr. Whisper to lead grown men?

  31. louden Says:

whats wrong with being more or less uncomfortable with the media
    (Marshawn Lynch)
    I can understand them

How about others who clearly “need” (more or less) attention; like Warren Sapp – who love to speak in front of cameras.. they can put up a show..

Just like Jameis “interrupting” Jimbo as his PC after the game
(not totally a mock – just showing the difference in personality)

No need to hate/love them for that..

As for “no heart” – you see Mariotta being just very natural leader – on the sidelines or on field , a handclap here a good word there, Teammates coming over to him..

winston is simply more outgoing, but what you see is not always what you get – sometimes putting up a show, an act.. while mariotta is simply is his natural more “dialed in” quiet self..

every player responds differently to both styles..

there is no good or bad about that two “styles” so its stupid pointless to discuss anyway.. but i cant help when reading stuff like “snobbish” when describing Mariotta (dear readers, just get a sense about “aloha” wikipedia it.. undestand where Mario is coming from)

  32. gracelivin Says:

I hear everyone talk about system, but in reality everyone is a system QB, Peyton is a system QB, he understands the system he is in and uses it, Brady is in a completely different type system and is effective. For me I don’t care what kind of system you play in collage offensively, what really matters is what kind of defensive systems you face. You may play a pro style offense but you sure aren’t playing against pro style defense so throws you make out of your pro-style offense are not against pro defenses and if you have a lot interceptions in collage you can expect them to triple in the pros because the defenses are that much better. I really would like us to take Mariota because of his character but would be happy with either.

  33. Eric Says:

    Needs work on the huddle.

    Kinda fundamental.

    Oh, the snap too.

    Whoops.

  34. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

    Chris Landry is a genius. #Thatisall #MariotascomingtoTampa

  35. buddha Says:

A real class act. He talks in complete sentences. He is polite and knowledgeable. He’s faster, has a better arm, and is a more complete player than Winston. Has the demeanor of Rodgers. He’s likely to fall in the draft like Rodgers did and all the teams that didn’t take him will regret it.

  36. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

And I definitely think that girl will be filing a civil lawsuit as soon as Winston signs a contract. Bad publicity = Bucs aren’t drafting Winston

  37. tmaxcon Says:

no matter how much you people pine for the choir boy get used to Winston. He is lovies ONLY choice to keep his job…. Get your Winston Bucs jersey’s early haters.

  38. Eric Says:

    This is the ball.

Then we stand in a circle and you call what is known as a play.

This guy here is the center.

    Uh oh.

  39. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Tmaxcon, you are blind and seemingly not too intelligent.

  40. ndog Says:

So Erik you dont like Winston but you think I guy who was FOUND GUILTY OF PLAGIARISM( http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2008/12/06/duemig-dumps-landry/)is a genius? This just shows your true colors and you believe what anyone tells you. Is this really Landrys opinion or did he steal that as well? And gravelivin makes a great point it is about what kind of defenses you face. What kind of difficult defenses did Mariota face since they had zero time to disguise their defenses due to them going at warp speed? Thats right very vanilla with little to no disguises so there was no reading a defense as most of the throws where determined presnap. Do you guys even watch football?

  41. Eric Says:

Might make it in arena or Canadian league after the NFL chews him up like all the other flashy Oregon QBs.

  42. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    bucsnation.com
has an article titled “Mariota is killing the interviews”

  43. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

@Erik….dollars to donuts there are more than one law suit ….laying low until Jameis actually has cash….no need to make him poorer before filing suit

  44. Skyline Crew Says:

Mariota is the only option at QB for us. You wanna win you go with Mariota. Has all the tangibles you want in a QB and more. To easy. Draft Super Mario.

  45. Skyline Crew Says:

To have an offense like Seattle or the Packers. Fantastic.

  46. Not ...... "The Kevin" Says:

This is getting harder to pick a side. I like Mariota’s ceiling and potential but I’m not crazy about his low energy, calm demeanor. Josh Freeman had that demeanor and it did have a trickle effect.

Not saying he is Josh Freeman but a high energy get off your ass and work kinda QB is what we need. That is a concern for me. I will be watching the Winston press conference. If he looks like he is sincere it will boost his stock no doubt.

Man what a decision to make…

  47. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Tom Edrington Says
“Joe needed to hear Chris Landry with the Big Dog on 620 this afternoon……major refute on Winston being more NFL ready……

    Very enlightening….”

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll have to go listen to the podcast!

  48. Posey99 Says:

“Might make it in arena or Canadian league after the NFL chews him up like all the other flashy Oregon QBs.”

Maybe he can back up Ponder and Manuel there.

  49. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Robert 9 Says
“the stadium will need a new section called the crabby corner”

That is probably the only thing you’ve ever said that made me grin.

  50. Luther Says:

Should be a lot of pissed of parents tonight when they get home. Lots of children unattended on computers today.

  51. Howard Cosell Says:

Mariota is smart enough to become a great NFL QB.
I’m concerned about him surviving the hits.
The best case is to NOT start him. Do like the Packers with Rodgers
and let him sit while CANNON-Farve puts on a clinic.
    Lol, I hope.

    LINE! Got-dag-nurbit O-LINE!
All of this QB pontification is going to be moot if the line still sucks.
I’m one for continuity…but keeping an eye for obvious upgrades.
Let Koetter call the shots on oline renovation.

  52. Skyline Crew Says:

Lovie thinks Mariota translates fine to the NFL and has seen him make the throws. Easy decision, go with the Duck and win a Superbowl.

  53. Rob Says:

    Re: taking hits…

Last I read, Mariota has put on some muscle and weighs almost the same thing that a slimmed down Jameis weighs.

  54. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    ndog Says
“We have one chance to change our future and his name is not Marcus Mariota. Again I pose the question who is the last qb to do what he is trying to do? And dont even say Wilson as they are not even comparable. Mariota is weak and fragile compared to Wilson.”

Oh, that’s classy. Pose a challenge and then remove the obvious option. Newsflash, Wilson was NOT drafted as the developed talent he is now. He has put on weight even.

But hey, I guess Newton doesn’t count either. Colin Kaepernick only went to the superbowl.

  55. Skyline Crew Says:

If Mariota is weak and fragile then Winston is to. He had a hurt ankle.

  56. Skyline Crew Says:

Bucs hired an O-lineman as Director of player development.

  57. Capt. Blighe Says:

I heard Mariota is a real mama’s boy and may not be comfortable all the way way over on the eastcoast. Too far from family in Hawaii.
You may draft him and only have him for one contract.
I’m a Member of GatorNation so I hate Winston with all my being but he is the right pick for the Buc’s

  58. BFFL Says:

Mariota conducts himself very much like Rodgers who is also low key and calm. Montana is another guy that conducts low key presses. Did anyone ever see Elway give interviews as a rookie? Again, another great QB who can never be confused as a refined public speaker….so what, big deal.

  59. P'cola Buc Says:

Mariota will need to “find his voice” in order to be successful in the NFL. His quiet and reserved nature will not translate in the NFL, not in the position of quarterback. He will need not only to talk in the huddle but to take charge of it as well. We read much of how difficult it might be of Winston to undergo a character change off the field. Perhaps we should also consider the difficulties Mariota may have adjusting his quiet and reserved nature on it. Still both are tremendous talents. Good luck to both!

  60. Nybucsfan Says:

The hunting ground is a flabby 231 they just said lol they said he lost 17 pounds but was not a good 17 pounds. Can you say Russell or bust or criminal

  61. Scott Says:

I dont see Mariota pulling receivers to the side and having a “chat” with receivers when they dont do their job (ex. Brady, Winston, etc.) and gettng them and the team fired back up. When he lost i saw Mariota hanging his head on the sideline.

  62. BoJim Says:

I love how the MM crowd is just so positive about him and ragging on Winston in the process. Is that all you can say? “I like his demeanor”. I’m not cool on waiting 3 or 4 years for him to develop or bust. Oh yeah, he played from a huddle in high school. Woo hoo. If we don’t draft JW at number one, please trade down. Character keeps us in the fricken basement.

  63. Skyline Crew Says:

Flowers was a beast today. Put up 225 37 times.

  64. Senor Mofo Says:

    Not …… “The Kevin” Says:

Mariota’s not low-energy on the football field. Good enough for me. He can sleep through his press conferences for all I care.

  65. Skyline Crew Says:

Mariota is better overall athlete than Winston. His mechanics are better as well. Nice quick release versus a long release from Winston. Mariota can extend plays better than Winston. So far the only thing I’ve heard that is good about Winston is the offense he played in. Doesn’t impress me. He regressed this year.

  66. Senor Mofo Says:

Whoops. That was supposed to read:

    @Not …… “The Kevin” Says:

I like Mariota’s ceiling and potential but I’m not crazy about his low energy . . .

    ================================================

Mariota’s not low energy on the football field. Good enough for me. He can sleep through his press conferences for all I care.

  67. Bill Says:

    NYbucsfan,

The picture everybody talks about was taken in early January, before the 17 lbs were lost.

  68. Howard Cosell Says:

With the extra weight Winston kind of reminds me of Jamarcus Russell

  69. Posey99 Says:

“I love how the MM crowd is just so positive about him and ragging on Winston in the process. Is that all you can say? “I like his demeanor”. I’m not cool on waiting 3 or 4 years for him to develop or bust.”

    3 or 4 years, wow…

  70. BFFL Says:

All we can do is project with little information..Winston shows Leaf and Leftwich like qualities while Mariota still has to learn things like calling a play from the huddle or cadence at the line of scrimmage . With that said the wise choice is develop Mariota and start Glennon given the circumstances because Mariota’s problems can be learned but Winston’s problems are innate character flaws (anyone who denies that is just an FSU fan in denial).

  71. Posey99 Says:

“Mariota’s not low energy on the football field. Good enough for me. He can sleep through his press conferences for all I care.”

Exactly. These are professionals. You lead with your play and composure.

  72. Nybucsfan Says:

Not a picture ESPN said today he looked like a flabby 231

  73. Posey99 Says:

“With that said the wise choice is develop Mariota and start Glennon given the circumstances because Mariota’s problems can be learned but Winston’s problems are innate character flaws (anyone who denies that is just an FSU fan in denial.)”

Agreed. Not to mention Winston’s on field flaws as well. Both have downsides, as all prospects do.

    NYbucsfan,

The picture everybody talks about was taken in early January, before the 17 lbs were lost.
    ————————————–

Since the Rose Bowl was on Jan. 1st and you said this picture was in early January. Are you saying he was 17 punds overweight for this huge game he is supposed to be in peak shape for? That is not what you look for in a franchise quarterback. When he delevops his man weight in 2-3 years he will convert to TE

  75. Rob Says:

“The picture everybody talks about was taken in early January, before the 17 lbs were lost.”

Right in the middle of playoff time?

  76. mark2001 Says:

Youngry…on ESPN, they weren’t talking about pictures…they were talking about what the people supposedly in the know saw at the combine weigh in…they said Winston had lost about 17 lbs, but said they wonder what kind of weight he lost, as he looked flabby.

  77. Yungry Says:

FSU conditioning team needs to answer why he was swelling around 250 during the most important part of the year. He just turned 21 last month! Yikes We will need a storage unit for all these red flags

  78. RastaMon Says:

Winstons….throwing motion,3/4 sidearm, pass rushers are going to have a field day chopping the ball loose….watch his freak’n delivery !

  79. Nybucsfan Says:

I’m not talking about a picture I’m talking today at the combine they said today he was a flabby 231 not a picture today in person. bill polain also said today he will have to meet with the team nutritionist to try to figure out what weight he should be at and weight could be an offseason concern

  80. Fishfries Says:

BFFL, what Leaf like qualities does Winston have?

  81. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

I have some advice for Mariota….

Pack your bags for cold weather. It get’s brrrr cold in Philly or NY.

  82. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Winston checked in at 6’3 3/4″ and 231 pounds. That’s hardly fat at all.

Carry on with your silly talk.

  83. Bill Says:

    NYbucfan,

Yes, Winstons weight could be a problem. It’s something the team will have to monitor along with every other player. It’s why teams have nutritionists and strength coaches. He’s 230 now, he was 250 during the Auburn game. The change is something to note, but I’m not sure what his ideal playing weight is.

  84. Bill Says:

    Yungry,

George Whitfield (Winstons trainer) said the picture was taken in early January, I don’t know exactly when that would be (2nd to the 13th?). That’s what I’ve heard. Obviously, Winston didn’t waste much time getting back to work.

  85. Firethecannons Says:

Why am I seeing people put winstons name alongside established NFL greats like Brady, Rodgers, Brees…? What the hell is wrong with you people?

  86. Eric Says:

One thing I think we can all agree on. If we draft Winston let’s not pose him with a tiger dressed like Michael Jackson.

    Or Marcus.

    Please no.

  87. Bill Says:

“Why am I seeing people put winstons name alongside established NFL greats like Brady, Rodgers, Brees…?”

Would it make sense to compare Winston’s future to the NFL career of Dak Prescott? Nope. I’m sure everybody is aware MM or Winston have yet to play an NFL down.

  88. Eric Says:

Well when I think of Marcus I can’t get Akili Smith and Joey Harrington out of my mind.

The Oregon QB bust list is very long.

    The success list nonexistent.

But Jameis is 9 pounds heavier than Marcus……..woo hoo. You guys are a trip.

  89. mikeh Says:

some good news today people bucs say Vincent Jackson not going anywhere this year.

  90. Pawel Chrobak Says:

Draft Winston if you want to win. Mariota is the next Manziel.

  91. Waterboy Says:

Roethlisberer’s weight coming out of college was 241.

  92. Bill Says:

MM is BY FAR the best QB prospect to come out of Oregon. JW is also, BY FAR the best QB prospect to come from FSU or Jimbo. Winston’s 2 year career is better than Russel’s 3 year career. Seriously, look it up.

Both of these guys are very good. The mudslinging is ridiculous.

  93. Waterboy Says:

One of my biggest concerns about Mariota is if he’s mentally tough enough to handle failure or disgruntled fans if he gets off to a rocky start in his nfl career.

  94. Nybucsfan Says:

@eirc just as many bust out of Jimbo fishers system and they are first rounders so that argument holds no weight. Speaking of weight Winston is fat and flabby like J Russell he has small hands accused of rape, steals, shoots windows out, and publicly degrades women, is there anymore we can add to his list?

  95. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

    “The success list is nonexistent.”

Ever heard of a guy named Dan Fouts? Eh, he didn’t do much, just made it into this thing called the Hall of Fame, whatever that is. The argument of using a school’s QB history is as ridiculous as some of the Winston haters arguments.

  96. mark2001 Says:

I swear…did they stop teaching reading in schools? IT WASN”T PICTURES…it was his check in weight and look at the COMBINE. Maybe you folks should tune into ESPN for the news before saying such ignorant things as a picture. With all the air brushing and such now days, no one would rely on a picture for anything…and neither will football professionals …unreal…that is a bigger disgrace to think such than our record last year.

  97. Eric Says:

Wow had to go all the way back to Dan Fouts.

    Hilarious.

The point is the system they currently run at Oregon hasn’t produced a good NFL QB.

Jimbo’s type of offense, although not Jimbo himself, has produced many many great NFL QB’s.

The hyped up collegiate spread – not so much. Look at the top ten ranked QB’s in the NFL and count how many came out of that kind of offense in college. You won’t get to one.

This, in general, is why so many more football people pick Jameis over Marcus.

Lovie Smith and Licht agree with this. They may not say it publicly, but they agree. They already know they are picking Winston.

The combine is for them to fill out the rest of their board. QB is set. Sure they are keeping their options open in case someone offers a Kings ransom. But the Jameis v. Marcus decision has been easily made from the tape.

  98. mark2001 Says:

NYBUCS….add to the list? Tomorrow is another chance to uncovers some more red flags. Frankly, reading some of the Winston Worshipers try to brush everything under the rug as they have, makes you wonder what drug they majored in. I’d say, let the pro’s do all the investigations, look at all the question marks and his positive attributes, do the same with Mariota, and draft the best guy or trade out if someone makes a deal you can’t refuse. But I guess that is too “clear eyed” a way of looking at it.

  99. Skyline Crew Says:

    Lovie is drafting Mariota.

  100. Senor Mofo Says:

The Glazers, Licht, and Lovie can easily draft Jameis Winston, and then sleep restlessly and fitfully, if at all, expecting that 3:00 a.m. phone call.

  101. J Moné Says:

Yeah why ask help from losers Mariota all the way to Tampa Bay

  102. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Well when you imply that a QB cant turn out well in the NFL simply because of what school he went to it makes you look like an idiot. Why didnt you just say QB’s who run spreads don’t typically fare well in the NFL? Which BTW is not true.

Now, spread OPTION, that’s a different story.

  103. Bucs#1 Says:

After watching Winston on the sideline at the end of the Rose Bowl throwing temper tantrums, throwing and kicking things, screaming at his teammates and yelling in his coach’s face, I seriously doubt that he will be able to handle the pressure of being an NFL QB

I’m confused….many posters are absolutely positively certain that the Bucs are picking Winston…..and there are also many who are absolutely positively certain the Bucs are picking Mariota.
    I don’t really have a clue….I guess I’m just a dumb $hit who doesn’t know anything about football.

  105. Senor Mofo Says:

If it was really so easy to pick a franchise QB based on watching film, attending the combine and pro days, conducting interviews, and hosting team visits, then every NFL team would have a “franchise” QB.

If it was that easy, there would have been no Manning-Leaf debate. Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t have dropped to pick 24 in the first round. Drew Brees wouldn’t have dropped to the second round. Russell Wilson wouldn’t have dropped to the third round. Tom Brady wouldn’t have dropped to the sixth round. Tony Romo and Kurt Warner wouldn’t have gone undrafted.

The draft is largely a crapshoot. You really can’t project how someone will play in the NFL until they actually play in the NFL.

Some guys have major red flags, and then set the NFL on fire. Others look like sure-fire locks, and fail miserably.

Success in the NFL is like success in any aspect of life. A lot of it is just opportunity and circumstance.

It’s fun, as armchair commenters, to so authoritatively dissect every little element of a player’s skill set or personality, as if we knew what we were talking about, or could foretell the future.

And, in reality, if NFL draft picks were chosen by fan opinion, many teams would fare better in the long term than they did by trusting their own expert analysis.

Personally, I believe that if you stock your roster with solid football players, superstars will emerge from that roster. Don’t overdraft or reach for star quality. Let stardom grow.

I love Winston because I’m an FSU homer. But Mariota looks solid as a rock to me as a pick. That’s why I would pick Mariota, and rest easy.

    @joe

Hmm…well, I guess this will come as a shock to some of the most successful teams in the league and division over the past few years. Seattle, San Fran…two of these teams have played head-to-head in the Super Bowl, one has a Superbowl win and a loss in successive seasons, and then there’s Carolina – who has won the NFC South and gone to the playoff’s in back-to-back seasons….

Also, about that whole “not reaching out to NFL QB’s…yeah that’s basically not true. He’s been working working with Kevin O’connell and Phillip Rivers…

    So, there’s that…

@ Bill : Good point. But on the other hand, there are so many people on these posts that think Winston is the next NFL great. I mean they might as well just induct him into the HOF. Screw the draft just put him in Canton. The love for this kid reminds me a lot of last year with the Manuel love. I understand that there’s a ton of FSU fans who post here, but don’t let that cloud your judgement. Im not a Winston supporter but if that’s who the bucs select at #1 then I will become his biggest fan. I just want the bucs to become relevant again. MM or JW I don’t care…

  112. Meat Says:

@ Joe- come on buddy, be a little less biased. Reporting that the Duck is not communicating with Blaine Gabbert, Cam Newton, and Dalton is completely ridiculous. Should Jameis be in communication with Honey Badger or Warren Sapp based on their character concerns pre-draft?

Mr. Meat? Why are you considering this negative and biased. Just as many might view Mariota not reaching out as a show of confidence, a good thing. Bias goes in all directions. –Joe

Insinuating he isn’t doing his due-diligence by not reaching out to one of them (like Jameis did with Harbaugh in at Michigan) is not a bad thing. This kid could call up Chip informally without anyone knowing and find out all he needs to know about the NFL and his transition- but he is also very bright and likely understands the task before him better than most Heisman winners who have been in his position. It also does not hurt that Johnny had about the worst possible transition you could have had, and is now in REHAB. Marriota will be fine because he is a great kid, JUST LIKE R.WILSON is.

I’m going to do shots during the Winston interview today.. Every time they ask him a football related question i will drink.. I’m pretty sure ill still be sober by the end of it..

  114. Josh P Says:

@White Tiger you made some valid points.. but what Joe said was “Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune asked Mariota if he’s been talking to current and former NFL quarterbacks who were SPREAD QBs in college like Mariota” notice the capitalized word.. Lets make sure we read every word in the sentence before we start trying to spin things..

Joe needed to hear Chris Landry with the Big Dog on 620 this afternoon……major refute on Winston being more NFL ready……

    Very enlightening….

    ——————

Enlightening in the aspect that he agrees with you and 97% of the other experts do not. The insiders at NFL.com have better resources at hand than you, Chris Landry, or 95% of the other guys that make a living at this, and almost unanimously have Winston going number overall.

  117. Waterboy Says:

    Who is Chris Landry?

  118. MTM Says:

If your not sold on Winston. You must be an idiot according to all the FSU homers. Shocker…

  119. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

To the people saying he asked to repeat the questions too much, listen again. Every time he did it, it was because of one guy…the man starting the same question over and over:

    “Marcus, you’re training with…”

Honestly, I was feeling sorry for the guy, because he kept getting interrupted until he finally spoke over anyone else. But it took like 3-4 tries at least.

The man had a loud voice, making it hard to hear over it.

One thing that impressed me was his habit to look the person asking a question in the eyes. Too many people no longer do that these days.

Anyone trying to put a negative spine on this presser is warped in the head.

Although I am hoping we get Winston I won’t be too upset if they decide for whatever reason that Mariota is the guy. However, after listening to him I have to say he does not seem like a leader of men. On the field in the system he runs he is electric. However, listening to him speak I got the sense that he was about to fall asleep. While everyone talks about his great character, I have to say he has very little to zero charisma. As a QB I think you need some of that Brady like fire and I don’t see that in Mariota. Just an observation.

  122. Josh P Says:

Which team is Chris Landry the GM of again??? You can do all the analytics you want.. there are to many variables for it to be a perfect science..Hell Bryce Petty or Brett Hundley could end up being the best 2 QB’s in this drafts when its all said and done, we have no idea… Everyone lets there personal opinions of a person good or bad affect their true analysis. 98% of the sports world say JW is the more pro ready QB and i suppose to listen to small market sports talk host and his hand picked guest..

    Here’s some logical analytics:
The Bucs are in a great positions.. They have the opportunity to draft 1 of 2 great college QB’s or can stock pile picks if they can trade down…Sounds like they are in a Win Win situation in my book…

  123. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Josh P

Landry served as Coach, Scout and Administrator at the College Football and NFL levels, so I think he knows his stuff. He’s been to over 30 combines as well.

A few things on this…first, how the heck do you determine if he is a leader of men through a single interview where he was likely nervous, in front of more reporters than he has ever faced at one time and with background noise all over?

Second, “fall sleep?” Come on now. You are just trying tp pick out things or make them up at this point. He has a calm demeanor…but he knows what he is capable of and figures to prove it on the field. That’s more Brady-like than you admit.

Thirdly, charisma, which I actually DID SEE, doesn’t win football games anyway. And don’t try to tell me that Winston has charisma. Last I checked, a leader of men doesn’t blame every other player on his team like Winston did in the Rose Bowl., or get in the face of his coach.

I swear, if you Winston supporters held Winston to the same standard you hold Mariota, you would be all about drafting Mariota.

  125. Bucfan4life Says:

Bonzai I can promise you that after watching a lot of video on Mariota I am basically 50/50 on which QB I prefer. There is a lot to like and I almost think his potential is even better than Winston. There has been a lot of talk with experts talking about the fact that he is not that alpha male type of guy. He is soft spoken and probably was a little nervous, but he does seem almost shy. With the team we have I would prefer that he was more of a leader because Lord knows we need some of that. It was just an honest statement about what I sensed from the interview.

  126. JFat Says:

FFS it’s a press conference. This isn’t the WWE people, he’s not going to smash a beer can on his head or start throwing chairs around to show his energy level behind the podium. We don’t need a cheerleader, we need a QB.

There is no one set personality type to be a leader. If this kid balls out and puts in the work, the team will follow and won’t want to let him down. Respect is the key to leadership.

  127. Bucfan4life Says:

The alpha male/leadership thing has been questioned by many experts. Luckily Koetter will be able to get plenty of Intel from his buddy Mark Helfich.

  128. Meat Says:

Joe- I misunderstood your take and agree with you that MM having confidence in himself and his ability to transition is a good thing. It was the title that got me fired up- “advice is a low priority for MM”. Even rereading, the title doesn’t sound positive out of context.

  129. White Tiger Says:

    @JoshP

I need no direction as to the wording. Why would Mariota NEED (I got your capitalization right here<<<) to call the other spread QB's? He knows that system, can text/call Chip Kelly whenever he needs to…the guys he NEEDS to talk to are the guys who see things from the perspective of the teams that WON'T run a spread…

Which is why Mariota HAS reached out to QB's more familiar with calling plays in a huddle – something he hasn't done since high school. See, the teams I listed run pretty close to a pure spread – the way MM ran it at Oregon – but even these teams augment the playcalling with a more traditional/complimentary system. The west coast offense shares some concepts and personnel. The difference is that if you run the WCO without a huddle, it's done with verbally as your walking to the line…not so with the spread-option, it's a visual system.

The take-away is, MM knows he's likely to go to a team seeking a mobile QB – so he's talking to QB's about using terminology. He's got a couple of good "mentors"…for that transition.

    Try to keep up.
